Thanks for this video. My wife's F30 rear left tyre looks just like this.
Awesome, thx. Getting a 02 X5 3.0 on the jackstands this week; your vids really help.
Would you recommend replacing just the rearward arm first and seeing if that corrects the issue before doing both arms, integral link, and the big ball joint that sits in the integral link? My E39 is destroying the inside of both rear tires despite having a recent alignment with every number in the green. 178k miles.
Hey Nathan I was wondering if you have any tips on diagnosing and replacing (tools needed, location of part) a TPS on a e39 528i. Thanks!
I’ve installed coil overs to my e39.
I’ve noticed the rear wheels have quite a lot more negative camber now, which I need to sort out ASAP.
After seeing this, I’m going to try straighten them out soon!
Cheers
I just replaced my rear upper control arms and guide links because the ball joints were bad on both. My tires are wearing in the exact same fashion. I'm glad I replaced the correct parts!
So on the lower control arm is no adjustment made for the wheels alignment?
Thank you man, my 525d has same problem. My rear passenger side tire was almost like yours worn from inside, and I grab the tire when still on car and move it left and right o man the upper ball joint is totally gone, I'll order some meyle or lemforder control arms and also a camber adjustment nut and bushing because mine is rusty as hell, thank you for the info
Thanks brother I appreciate the knowledge. I got a x5 recently a hand me down 200k now. Anyway I was driving down the road behind a Tesla suv and saw the rear wheels looked like the rear tire bottoms were slanted out to make a v formation. I thought it was some modern stuff. Anyway thanks I'll replace them arms along with everything behind the door panels but their good machines.
happened on my 98' E39 528i. Inner rear tire wear to both rear tires. Known camber defect or the reasons specified here.
Don't see very many A. That color or B. THAT condition especially @265K. Nicely done Amber & Nathan!
Do you think this mostly carries over to the E82?
Good explanation.
Premature tyre wear on inside left front? Lower control arms (wisbones) replaced, but saw stabiliser arm bush is broken and arm loose, guessing it is reason for tyre wear?
Thank a lot I just found my e39 530i do the same thing 1 h ago.
I'm a little confused maybe you can explain this to me better..from what I'm getting so far the x5 got 2 camber adjustment..one is the rear upper camber arm( need to be replaced with the proper arm) the 2 one is on the lower control arm...my question is why not just do the adjustment on the lower arm...why replace the top arm also
Ideas where to send ABS module for repair ?
Rear ball joint was one of the 1st repairs I did on my 1st E39. Bit tricky, but got rid of a real annoying clunking noise in the back. I'm on my 2nd E39 now and never had tyre wear issues thankfully.
What kind of clunking? My E46 has a clunk too but I'm afraid its from where the diff mounts up. My mechanic hasn't fount the source yet tho. Only happens when downshifting into 2nd and first (automatic). And mainly at first drive of the day. After driving a while its doesn't do it anymore. Ugggghhh
Yeah different noise I think mate. Mine was low speed, when the car was being contorted (eg. speed hump). I have slight driveline vibration when I put my foot down which I think could be engine mounts, giubo or trans bushing things.
Hey nathan i have an e90 do they have a camber bolt? the inside of my tire was down to wire lucky caught it in time before a blow out
90% of the time it is not the camber bolts, but wore out bushings, balljoints. Also it is best to do any adjustments on a stand. Don't jack up the car and try to adjust anything as most suspension components should be torqued to spec only under load.
I just did upper arms, guide links, integral links and ball joints on the rear on my 4.8is. Camber was stuck at -2.5 on the driver side and changing those got it to -2.2. I have all the arm bushings to change out as well, just didn't have time to do it that day. I'm hoping that I'll get full range of adjustability back after I get those bushings changed out.

Did you get it sorted? How’s the camber?
Hey Nathan, I’m most likely going to change my rear shocks on my e39, would you recommend an alignment or a chamber adjustment after that?
No you would not have to mess with the alignment
What about the front struts?
I like the garage.
Yeah but the roof is not high enough in case he wants to places a lift in it.
Have you ever tried anti-seize between the wheel and hub?
it seems like anitsieze dries up after awhile, I have used a little grease and that works well
How i do toe in and out rear in a e39? =/
Dude somebody help? I've got an 02 X5 both rear wheels are camber in like hell I've replaced both camber arms and upper control arms and it hasn't fixed anything I have a feeling that it's an adjustment problem I'm not sure how to adjust it do I do it with a jack under the spindle or just floating with a jack ?
You need to get the rear camber and toe adjusted by someone with a proper wheel alignment machine.
That is exactly that happen to my 325 I only one tire .
oem chamber game 😎
i got the trifecta going on,there's a place in east tennessee that rebuilds them for a very reasonable price.do you have any experience or know anything about their workmanship?thanks and I'm a loyal subscriber.Rick from memphis
Hi rick, scan it first and make sure thats what it is , some company recently emailed me that rebuilds this but I dont remember the name , it should cost around $100 to get one rebuilt
thank you for such a quick response.all my gauge cluster lights are on so im fairly sure its the culprit.thank you for all the very informative videos, also where and how much can i get a obd2 reader for my 2001 525i.thanks again.Rick
How about wearing tyres in the middle of the tread? Cupping effect
You have to much air in your tires.. or not enough, check your tire pressure
Just checked the tie rods, and they are worse than the control arm, totally shot, I recommend disassembling and checking the tie rods
Having inner tyre wear on my X5, which lead me to this video, really appreciate the heads up on this will deff go check it out, your comment on the camera being squished reminded me of a quick video of my ute I did and put on facebook, the upper control arm seemed to have movement, so I took a video of it and used the jimmy bar to wiggle the arm, anyhow the jimmy bar came loose and hit the camera, the camera went flying and I didn't bother to edit the last bit out, first comment that came up was "why did it look like you just hit your head"? pmsl I replied, well it would if your head was the camera lol
Always always always take care of your girl friends car! Nathan you should have inspected the tires of her car every now and then! You would have seen this in an earlier stage.
Whew, after seeing how close she was to Major, Major catastrophe, I'm sure you'll never let her ride on a tire like that ever again! Keep reminding us how important tire condition and pressure is to all those in and around cars on the road...
Yep never know what might happen
hi nathan
what if the front tire wear from inside ?
usually control arms, the front I just do the whole kit with the tie rods
Nathan's DIY Garage thanks
i would like to suggest a video
how to diagnose e36 or e46 suspension ( control arms . bushings etc .. )
I already have that video up on the channel
I once had a situation the BMW slipped of the jack but landed on both jack stands.
I heard a story the other day from my co worker who lives near a junkyard and its owner was working underneath a car while it was on a car jack ONLY, the jack slowly slowly gave away and the car slowly came down but the guy didn't notice until it was too late, he could not breathe nor shout to anyone so he suffocated under the car.
Hope everyone reading stays safe
Damn, yo. That back tire is worse than mine....I think. Last time I checked the inside rear tires on the e38 the tread was gone but no belts exposed. I need to get around to replacing that stuff myself, but been way too busy.
Its hard to keep up this many cars , I told her its the drivers responsibility lol
Nathan's DIY Garage lol! That's how my girlfriend is. She's like "when are you gonna change my coolant, my trans fluid and my figure out what's wrong with my A/C?" I'm like "I have my own cars to worry about. Yours comes last. If yours breaks, you aren't borrowing the Vette, you're borrowing the BMW. I need that thing 100% reliable first." It's always something with that car. Fun to drive tho
There are so many cars here to fix its hard to see a end to it
Your rear toe is out, be sure to replace arms and get an alignment. It's a good time to look at those lower ball joints too.
everything else was good, these cars rarely ever have rear toe issues, its always the upper arms
It’s a shame that BMW cheap off on that lower front seat trim. I think there are 5 e39s left in the world without broken and loose lower seat plastic, and thats only because they have already been replaced (but they still have broken cup holders). They would have been better off if they had just reused the seat bottoms from the e36.
I've had 2 E39s with manual controls and both of those plastics were mint and still mounted as per factory.
Not to crazy about some of these European control arm set ups lol
a little funky but that is why they handle good and ride smooth
