longboarders descend much faster than bikes. getting 40mph+ is an easy feat while many cyclists are stuck just hitting that. you want the front truck to turn a little more than the rear. if the trucks are identical it is evermore important for the rider to have their weight slightly biased to the front truck, over the front truck. for falling you are gonna have a hand and a prefered roll or if you slide away youll have provisions for doing that. the sliding gloves are made from a hard slippery plastic and very fun and add safety to tight turns. 300-600$ gets you a topend board from someone like longboard larry, subsonic, rayne, DB longboards. there is no need to get ripped off at a shopping mall buying an inferior product. churchill manufacturing makes great decks and for a new rider their decks are choice. i havent looked in years but Roja trucks from braden boards has gone through alot of reengineering from an originally cost effective and dope product. their trucks no cost some crazy figure. regular longboard trucks like Paris, Sabre, Randall work great and if the bushings are tuned to your Weight and riding style it makes alot of difference. the traditional trucks are lighter than Rojas and ride lower and make for a better crusier but yet,,, that isnt tottaly true; for a good rider zero tolerance skate truck designs allow better thrust from carves and more secure slide stops,, oh an they work better at speed. skateboarding utilizes the 'gunk seal' philopshy very much as you remove the sheilds on the inside of the wheel assembly and add a good dab of white lithium or whatever.. that grese wears outward leaving a low grease/low friction enviroment inside the bearing assemblies and a think 'Gunk Seal' at the bearing opening. this Philosophy works amazong with pedals where you can put a thin silicone in the cup and a thicker polylube around the threads of the spindle before you put it back together. over a winter or through dirt this will stay really smooth. the best way to picka longboard up at a stop is to take your rear foot off to stomp-footbrake and lightly lift up your front foot and place its heel down on the nose as to cause it to pop up. if done right, the enertia from the forward travel combined with the abrupt forced halt will send the board upward and, if done right, will pop right up into your front arm/hand (out of your line of sight for proper excecution, but you can look back while learning it). ok now if this is done at a curb you can as soon as the board reaches your hand you can drop it back down from the same position it was received in your hand/posture with or without a leap from your rear foot currently on the ground. the move is called an 'acid drop' and you get back on the board. this way you can with Minimal Effort pop a Longboard Larry Pusher up a curb smoothly or come to a halt without the silly fumble to pick the board up. e, the rider has area trucks which are a top shelf brand. Global Longboarding Network. lots of board types, makers and its way better than a one wheel
Hey GCN I'm one of the top professional endurance longboarders, former cyclist. My specialty is climbing and 24 hour races. I'll race yah everesting if you're interested.
If it was a real speed competition, the longboard guy should’ve worn an aero cycling clothing but he didn’t for fashion. So longboard guy’s win to my eyes.
To be fair, Mirko wasn't skating in leathers so had increased drag from his t-shirt, as well as doing standup skids on round lipped wheels so he didn't slow down as effectively as he could've, not to mention skating wide hangers and long wb. A more correct comparison would've featured leather suit, square lipped wheels, narrow trucks and wb, and hands down sliding - As uncontrolled and adrenaline junkie fueled it might look to navigate mountains on skateboards, in reality that biker would've gotten smoked if Mirko geared and skated for it.
This was a fun video. But trying to call it who's faster is kinda weak. The longboarder (who is an incredible freeride talent) is riding slow, (he was standing tall when he had the chance to pass, he wasn't holding a tuck) and he was using freeride wheels which are good for displays of breaking, but not fast exit speeds. Aero bike vs t-shirt. He barely even held a tuck. No offense but a guy like Danger Dane would have dropped Hank. In my experience skateboards at faster on windy downhills, and faster on incredibly steep climbs. But any grade that can use the drivetrain the bike wins out. For the record, I am both a cyclist (gravel, and observed trials) and a longboarder.
Absolutely epic video and footage! Nevertheless I think that it is not completely valid because you will keep some distance if you know that someone can make the corner. Eventually you need to descent apart from eachother and than compare both times afterwards. I love the work for this video and I enjoyed it. Keep up the good work!
I was a longboarder for many years and now im a road cyclist. And longboard always win true race like this. World record on longboard is something like 145km/h and they also can take corners faster than a bike.
1:11 That's a bit misleading. In GCN's own ask the pros video, most pros responded that the fastest they'd EVER cycled was between 110 and 120 km/h, on very specific stretches of road, with a couple saying over 120km/h. Even pros don't regularly exceed 100km/h.
It wasn't really a race... The longboarder was on freeride wheels and he didn't kitted up with a full face helmet and leathers. So he wasn't in actual DH mode. But that's fine. It was more about sharing stoke and joy! Liked it a lot. Transcending sports. Sharing the love for your sport and stoke! Maybe do a video in Kozakov or one of the other Euro tour races? That's a proper downhill race. I am sure you'll find plenty, willing to DH with you.
How do fast long boarders even exist? I got faster at cycling descents by using brakes to scrub speed until I could handle faster descents - how does a long boarder learn to do that? Great videography.
2 things. Murco would have got him if his shirt wasn't so baggy. ;) And 2, Hank looks cool on that bike but he'll never look as cool as the longboard looks drifting through those corners at god-only-knows what speed. The guts that takes is crazy.
I think it looks as if they both had to hold back a little bit in the turns in order to stay out of each other’s way. If you want to know who is really faster let them each descend alone, and chip time it.

That's interesting
Longboard versus stonking Storck fighting a downhill battle - that took some ballbearings!
Props to Merco and long boarding. That takes a lot of courage and skill
Now all we need is for Top Gear to join in the fun… I pretty sure they also did a longboard competition
What an amazing film! Cinematography was epic! They should race again, but this time put Hank on the longboard and see how that goes.
Not sure we need to do that to Hank - we'd like to get him back 😅
I’d be really surprised if Hank didn’t give it a go-we just didn’t get to see it. Where are the outtakes, guys?
Ok, nice shots with the drone, but we had no idea of the pace of the race, the stages or anything.
The launch of GLN - Global Longboarding Network?
Perhaps...🤔
That was a wild challenge. Need more like that with Hank "Need for Speed" against others.
need this content GCN! Love it!
Where’s Tom Pidcock when you need him.
Ollie couldn't do this video because he would have been stopping to admire how aero Murco was getting.
How much faster would the skateboarder have gone if he had been wearing Lycra? Hats off to both guys for a thrilling ride!
Amazing visuals all around! Kudos!! ❤️😄👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
No stats? Top speed, average speed, times, victory margin? Epic footage, but there are nerds here, too!
The long board guy is wearing flappy tshirt! I totally support him!
Good to see Hank won, otherwise GCN would need to change the name to GLN = Global Longboarder Network
Alright, looks like we got our very first GLN Prensenter here bois.
Video: Who is faster?
GCN: Storck and MET advertising.
Me: WTF 🤨
Kudos to those drone shots and to these two daredevils... Let's make it a 3 way race and add Thomas Pidcock... That would be and EPIC downhill race.
He'd smoke us! 🔥
Nike and stork (who I've never heard of) should sponsor this :P
Who do you have flying the FPV drone for the orbit shots?
Wow he’s got some skill on that longboard
Yes, absolutely!
A few nuts and bolts holding thier equipment together is all that is stopping them from becoming a I km long red smear on the road..
Charles you'll have to send them an email and ask them to stop copying your ideas lol
Hank should have picked the heaviest bike available to increase his terminal velocity
I think the weight of the longboarders huge balls must be an advantage on the descent.
That was cool! Longboarding downhill is crazy! I'll stick to my bike.
Props for the camera work!
2 things.
Murco would have got him if his shirt wasn't so baggy. ;)
And 2, Hank looks cool on that bike but he'll never look as cool as the longboard looks drifting through those corners at god-only-knows what speed. The guts that takes is crazy.
Hank going on SAFA style.
I think it looks as if they both had to hold back a little bit in the turns in order to stay out of each other’s way. If you want to know who is really faster let them each descend alone, and chip time it.
