I am a generational Cub fan who grew up in Chicago, but have been living in Bangkok, Thailand for the last 20+ years. My kids (2 sons) were born here in Bangkok, but I raised them to be Cub fans. My youngest son is a diehard Cub fan like me. Great show Kyle. Keep up the good work.
I agree with you both about the first tax threshold. Here’s my question, if it is so important to have to reset this year because they went over last year, and it’s something that is so important to the Cubs all the time, how negligent does it look for them to have barely gone over last year on accident ? Do you think this is factored into how Jed is being allowed to operate financially this off-season?
@ they went over by roughly 2 mediocre relievers. I think we can tell when they figured it out, by when drew smyly was suddenly put on waivers, and they tried to give him and the rest of his salary away, which would probably have covered it
Yes, the team needs a starter. You guys keep talking about Sasaki. One in six chances. One guy the team can get is Bauer. Which no one on this channel or any Cubs channel talks about. It's as if Trevor Bauer lives in Korea lol. I saw an interview some catcher did who is his buddy and says his stuff is better today than what he had when the Dodgers gave him one hundred million. A hundred percent chance to get Bauer. It either works or not. 50 50. For the league minimum? It's ignorant to not get him. Get Sasaki too. Maybe get Cease. Which won't happen. The Cubs need two starters and a closer. Period. Anything less, the team is not serious. Yes, they have guys who are healthy this year and not healthy a lot of last year. The team has NO money. If you got 29 million for Boyd and he might be great.....why not 20 million for Yates for two years. Or 15 million. At least throw an effort to Yates and Bauer. Instead, they now have 4 catchers and a number 5 starter and a reliever with an ERA of a gazillion from Pittsburgh. What sucks is, the team can compete right now. They can really compete with a starter or two and a closer.
Despite having visited Japan over 20 times, I wouldn't say I have an in-depth understanding of Japanese culture as you're asking the Sasaki question about him not wanting Japanese players present at the meetings. I'm only guessing at this, but it's entirely possible Sasaki talked with all the Japanese players beforehand on the phone or whatever to get answers from them, but didn't want the teams trying to use their Japanese players as selling points. Rather, he wanted the teams to sell him on all the other reasons they would be good for him rather than use, "Well, we have these fellow countrymen of yours on our team!"
Twins trade Jhoan Duran and Carlos Correa, No 10ish prospect to Cubs for Alcantara, Nico Hoerner, Blocked Trip A Vet prospect (Mervis like). Cubs now have best Bullpen in ⚾. Use the Extra 10mil from Nico to sign Bregman to 4yrs 110mil so 26per, 10 of which is coming from Nico being moved. And we have 45mil until we hit the 1st threshold (Cap for poor teams 😅 even tho we have 3rd highest income) That leaves still around 25mil per to spend and you have a World Series level team already.
Jhoan Duran Jhoan Duran Jhoan Duran Jhoan Duran Jhoan Duran Jhoan Duran Jhoan Duran Jhoan Duran Jhoan Duran Jhoan Duran Please 🙏 GOD help the Cubs trade for Jhoan Duran. Twins are selling!!!! Go get him Jedi!!!!
Another "tough to swallow" trade proposal would be offering Minny Horton, Alcantara, Rojas, Wicks, and Birdsell for Lopez and Duran. Twins get 3 top 100 prospects, and MLB ready pitcher, and the Cubs # 21 while the Cubs get a TOR starter and Closer. I wouldn't be surprised if they asked the Cubs for 1 more, and if it wasn't in the Cubs top 10 aside from what I proposed, I'd probably do it.
Man…there is some kind of interview with former Cubs prospect Cam Smith… in Foul Territory…what’s up with this guy? Those were comments a baseball prospect should better kept to himself. That guy will be a controversial player in awaiting.
Brozdowski talks too much without adding much value - please stick with the core subject and leave it at that (and don't talk over poor Kyle so much!). On Sasaki, everyone would love to get him but it's a crap shoot so how about just leaving it alone until he decides? Cover things more under Jed's control - there is enough of that in potential trades and free agent signings

Kyle: The Setup Man is the best Cubs podcast of any I’ve found. Impressive content-especially the interviews w/q&a. Good job.
Ed Dwyer asking about what "realistic" relievers the Cubs could target - That's easy, anyone that's relatively cheap.
Are we adding another starting pitcher and a third baseman

They went over by a decent amount. If they were surprised, then heads should roll.

Carlos Correa is 35m per year I think
I would give Nate Pearson a chance to start. Assad could be long relief.
Why don't the Chicago Cubs get Tanner Scott or Kyle Finnegan as a closer? They need a right hand starting pitcher and a new 3B.

Sign Bauer nowadays!

For Betatani, it was all about privacy. And Roberts is a moron, so that explains last year
Think if it like Soto...you'd rather the fans knew you tried.

Honestly, I think Trevor Bauer would be the answer. The reward far outways the risk.
