- What do you do when your country is surrounded on all sides, your economy is bombed to dust and you can easily be drafted for front-line service? Most will resign to their fate and face the enemy at the front. Some will flee or do everything to dodge having to fight. However, some chose to devise projects that were amazing on paper, with superior overall characteristics, while they try to mask the impracticality and disconnect from reality. This was the case with many Germans who were involved in work for the Luftwaffe (German Air Force) during the later stages of the Second World War. Such was the case with Heinz Sombold, who introduced the highly unconventional So 344 Parasite missile interceptor.

Given the short coupling of main and tailplanes, the loss of 400kg from the extreme front of the aircraft would ensure it would be totally uncontrollable, certainly not able to land as a glider
I think it was very headhavy and start like a projectil, after release it may have a standart weight layout. Not the best idea but in desperade times you put the horse on the tail.
Unlikely to be trimable for normal flight, let alone the huge cg shift after the rocket was launched.
Kind of looks like one of those moon base interceptors from the old UFO TV series.
Paper airplanes were a Luftwaffe specialty in 1944 and 1945. The Military Aviation Museum in Virginia Beach Virginia. Has several full size mock-ups of, what if paper project planes. All include a piece or two from operational aircraft.
Also the Horten, flying wing sawed one Horten brother from being sent to the Eastern Front, as he was needed as a testpilot! And hardly anyone, at the top knew about the Horten Factory, which was kept a secret. They also made plans for an America Bomber, flying wing, which may have been able to reach the US. And both made gliders originally.
Fascinating I look forward seen some of these designs revisited and upgraded in the Ukraine war even.

The nose cone looks like that from Fireball XL-5, I wonder if Gerry Anderson the creator of Fireball was inspired by it
This weapon system has some similarities with the Japanese "Oka-plane" - and it would probably have run into the same problem as the Oka - that the "mothership" would be attacked by fighters before getting close enough to launch the attack plane.

P.S. just an afterthought. If the germans were able to cripple HMS Warspite and sink RN Roma with the Fritz-x guided bombs, in spite of the inherent risks for the bomber of flying straight and slow in order to keep visual contact and guidance, how much easier and safer would be, for the operator, to con such a missile from a hidden/camouflaged position on the ground with the enemy bombers clearly silhouetted (at least by day!) against the sky?
The Germans did try to make surface to air missiles, but they were visibly guided and not really able to hit anything.
Getting the aspect ratio right would be good.
Where would the C.G.be after the mass had been fired from the nose?
i think a big startroket and so no need of a tugplane would it made more usefull. but than in would be one more of the planes not redy at wars end.
Sonderkommando Elbe, ramming allied planes, WAS used on a few occasions with limited success .
The Germans did not have a proximity fuse. They worked on designs but could never make a suitable one for AA use. Of course, perhaps the fuse was a hoped for advancement once the So-344 was ready.
They also had no bomb bay adaptation to carry the craft. This must have been greenlighted on the hope that both would materialize as the craft became airworthy.
So, it was a giant 1 shot flak gun likely to detonate even on its own airfield due to its own fuel. Go Allies!

What we have here? A missile plane shot from the ground in order to attack enemy planes with a rocket warhead. Wouldn't it be much easier targeting such bombers with a battery of unmanned ballistic rockets directly from the ground? Cheaper, probably more readily available, possibly more effective (or at least less dicey), and not requiring a somewhat crazy guy to pilot it! Very interesting vid about a vehicle i never heard of! Thank you!

The Germans were looking at too many designs instead of concentrating on one light fighter, one heavy fighter and one jet fighter, more focus on innovation rather than quantity, let them down really
9:36 How you know, someone doesn't know: For certain Bley Segelflugzeuge didn't had their own windtunnel testing facility. There were centralized windtunnels, how it is still today.
Maybe the biggest aircraft producers have (had) windtunnels, maybe.
Didn't watch much of this 99% speculation.
I'm sorry if this sounds a bit harsh, but the mix of the deep growling voice, and the History channel-style music, gives the video the same vibe as those "MILITARY SUPER TECH" channels. I still trust this channel to be well informed and so forth, but the tone just seems like a huge miss match.
We really like the new narrator. But that has nothing to do with the script writing.

Yeah the German high command wasn't so dumb as to accept paper airplanes in place of real weapons this guy sounds like he suffers from the usual jealousy of German technology which is still in use today😮
