You're wrong about activities. Korean idols go on a lot of variety shows, make exclusove content online for their fans and they also model and do brand deals, some make appearances in movies & tv shows and make appearances at other events so you're wrong about Korean idols having limited activities

Korean idols are going less to music shows and variety shows and focusing more in the self produced content, specially RUclips or with certain platforms, this is because they spend a lot of money and made no money, idols got pay the equivalent to $36 us for group to appear in these shows.

im both a jidol and k idol fan and have been a fan of your vids for a while. I'm disappointed in the lack of research in some areas (such as pointing out that variety shows are something jidols focus on despite Korean idols participating in most of their promotions inside of variety shows as well as the lack of discussion about the jidol training process) and thee way you chose to use the Japanese names of the kpop groups instead of just using the english names, considering the video is in English.
If you try another video comparing jidols with other entertainment mediums, please try and be more detailed. I do love your videos a lot and this video was slightly disappointing in comparison. Maybe I'm biased but I would've loved this video if there were more details.
I believe other viewers agree considering that they've also taken to the comment section to add details on their own.
Looking forward to your next video

In the past it is indeed difficult to look for things for Japanese idol groups, that has indeed change a lot now. Depending on the idols especially underground idols, there are actually quite a no. of them having online chat services, live stream of their live etc. and even their music which oversea fans are able to access them without any issues. Japanese idols are promoted globally as well, especially South East Asia country like Thailand which frequently invited them to go over to perform.

    I listen and I like both j-pop and k-pop.
However, I still prefer j-pop idols from the past like Chisato Moritaka and idols with mature image like Philosophy No Dance.
When it comes to k-pop idols, I prefer those with high musicality like Kim Jae-joong, 2NE1, Lee Hyori, and Mamamoo.

It is still very hard to have access to Jpop Idol overall. Hello! Project groups especially, they don't have their songs available on international platforms like Spotify, this inevitably creates a wall that not only discourage old fans but also stops new people to get to know fantastic groups like Morning Musume or Angerme. It's quite frustrating...

you can see differences in Japanese idols when it comes to physical appearances. they have quirks, they embraced it. Kpop is all about perfection that made all the idols look the same. i will always love Jpop more. wont deny some have plastic surgeries but its not as bad as korean idols.

Think about, i know a lot of Japanese indie music scenes tends to be more globally minded than Korean mainstream music scenes. A lot of Japanese MVs from these indie acts are full MV while MVs posts from mainstream record labels are short version and geoblocked to Japan-only. This helps the fact that Japanese indie music acts, while not more globally focused, want to have more freedom from allowing their content freely and not for being an limited-time only.
Also, a lot of Japanese MVs and their songs on music streaming services are written in Japanese langauge, which hinders Japan's music global growth, including Japan's indie music scenes.

I would just like too add that some info on how you become an Korean idol. There's mostly three ways either you get scouted by a recruiter or manager which can happen out of nowhere, you go to auditions and have a chance to get picked their or sometimes these recruiters also visit dancing schools.
So depending on that you might already spend years at a dancing school then you get to be a trainee for potentially even more years just so you have the chance to debut alone or with a group.

As a Kpop idol fan who doesn't know much about Jpop, the thing you said about individual personalities being on the front on the Jpop scene surprised me because on the first glance it looks like Jpop idols are dressed the same, styled the same, and sing the same type of song across the country. Also, the variety shows are very important in Kpop scene too. It's the great way to promote their albums and for fans to get to know them. There are variety TV shows, and idols still attend to reach greater audience, but rather than visiting tv shows (which seeks rating), Kpop groups started to produce their own variety content in their own youtube channels, so, it's a more controlled environment (contradictorily, the new trend is that they visit other channels where another idol is the host and interviews them, or they simply hang out). Kpop idols indeed try to have a more muted personality (probably media-trained) because (i think) the social pressure is higher in Korea, and they aren't only exposed to Korean market but world market, and there is... fanwars, so they get a lot of hate if they don't. I don't know how it is for Jpop fans, but Kpop fans don't engage only with their fav idols. Whole thing is so fast-paced and trend-chasing that being the new shiny thing is important, so it's a lot like a race, and achievements matter a lot to fans. Thus, not only their favs should be successful, other groups should also suck, and this leads fanwars and hate-campaigns against the idols who happened to say the wrong thing.

Personalities not looks. J-pop idol groups like to typically have their idols to wear very similar costumes because they’re in the same group. They like coherence and consistency. That’s why they have their personalities shine through rather than looks. And I say this as a huge k-pop and j-pop fan. Their looks do not equate to their personality.

The funny part about the outfit thing you mentioned is that, even though in kpop all group members wear different outfit in stages, those outfits rarely reflect anything about their personalities at all. The visual variety is clear, but most of the time, unless you actually take time to watch a ton of variety content, you'll have little to no idea of the members individual personalities

The ones who aren't in the same vein as 46/48 with a school girl aesthetic usually have color coding, following a magical girl/power rangers aesthetic.
And while there are no hard rules, the coloring is a bit of a hint to personality and position.
So they are exceptionally easy to differentiate even if they don't have the money for fully individualized costumes the trim or whatever will still be color coded.
In J-idol fandom, most of the groups play at least some events with other groups. It's rare at the 46/48 level, but even they still do it for stuff like TIF. One company will hold an event and invite a bunch of other groups. Often other fans will ask what group you're there and the middle front is for the fans of that particular group. So bad-mouthing other groups is really bad manners. Of course some people online will do it but online "fans" are a bit of a different beast.

For a jpop idol, it's usually important to have something called chara - a unique character, something she's known for or a role in the group (for example - the funny one, the cute shy one, the smart one, the one who likes x, the clumsy one, the "younger sister" of the group etc) and it's often equally or even more important than looks. Chara is usually the idol's real personality and interests but taken to an extreme. I'm a fan of jpop idols and a casual kpop listener and at first it surprised me how normal kpop idols behave compared to jpop idols lol

I was really hoping this video was going to be a good well thought out and researched video between both industries but like I'm seeing the common section there is a lot of things you were missing in the video. I got into J-pop actually through BoA about 21 years ago, I am currently 15+ years into K-pop. I don't really venture into J-Pop as much anymore (unless Perfume drops a MV) because I associated it with my youth. First, I wish you would use the actual definitions of what an Idol is versus what an Artist is and actually gave examples like for J-pop idols would be AKB48, Morning Musume and Artists like Capsule's Nakata san or Utada Hikaru versus K-pop. idols like BTS and BLACKPINK but there are Idols who are also considered artists that are also producers like Woozi of Seventeen, Suga of BTS, Soyeon of (G)i-dle and G-dragon. To be honest both J-pop and K-pop have western influences since WWII but on record Jpop has done more world music. K-pop originally marketed domestically with 1 GEN by 2nd GEN they were already marketing to Asia as a whole and 3rd GEN it was all about going global and we're still in that process with K-pop. When a group debuts in K-pop, they tend to start with a teen fresh or a girl next-door concept and as they mature, they go to more mature concepts, like girl crush and sexier images you'll see a change in the style of music that they do, but that's not always the case, especially depending on the label. SM entertainment artist are known for their vocal and dance ability that can range from Pop to R&B and into hip-hop. YG is known for its very West Coast influence hip-hop that is more on the global scale in terms of influences. JYP is known for their R&B powerhouse vocals but recently hip-hop is big influence. Someone already talked about like the recruiting of artist in K-pop but you can get recruited into K-pop various ways. as for per motions of the group or individually, and K-pop, there are multiple variety shows for example knowing Bros Weekly Idol, Running Man then you have the Musical Shows which an idols can become an MC of which they can also showcase their personality. There's also video calls with fans or in person fan meets and you can also become a brand ambassador for a cosmetic or luxury brand. And let me not forget about the Vlogs. that's another huge thing since 2 Gen (i.e 2NE1 TV or 3rd Gen BangtanTV) to get to know your idols as well as behind-the-scenes of video shoot or song recording. Oh the gif culture is full of k-pop memes. K-pop idols don't live in dorms through their whole careers/contracts, usually if an idol wins their first award during their debut then they are more likely to upgraded apartment/condo dorms and eventually once they make enough they can move out and live on their own since because housing isn't cheap in Seoul Metro Area.

Another thing is the diversity of how groups work. Every kpop group has the same structure, while jpop groups can have different standards. I love both jpop and KPOP groups and I was actually into jpop beofre KPOP, but I completely disagree with the part that there’s more genres that are not in KPOP idols music , I’m sure you haven’t deep dived or listened to different tracks because a lot of KPOP groups have done various genres such as : R&B , rock, ballads, bedroom pop , hip hip , Synthwave , dream pop , Afro beats , afropop , alt r&b , bass house , bitpop , bossa nova , bubblegum pop , dark synth , rap , phonk, city pop . I could go on and on there’s SO MUCH diversity in the genres , and I love both KPOP and jpop groups and everyone does have different taste but saying korean idol music doesn’t have more genres is not honestly true . There’s a vast amount of KPOP groups who are completely different in terms of concept for example dreamcatcher is KPOP group who focuses on rock like music , but there’s also illit who are KPOP group that focus on fresh teen concepts with a bubblegum pop genre. IF you are interested in hearing and listening to what I mean I recommend the group AESPA: MY WORLD ( the album) , TWICE : EYES WIDE OPEN ( the album) and TXT’s FREEFALL ( the album), and TXT’s TOMMORROW ( the album) , and IVE I’ve the first full album, and NEWJEANS 1st EP ( the album).

This got me thinking. I listen to a bunch of Japanese bands and solo artists, especially city pop, but not many J-pop idol groups. It's the opposite with K-pop: I listen to a bunch of groups, but hardly any solo artists or bands - It doesn't help that metal/rock/etc. music isn't as popular in Korea. Dreamcatcher is especially notable because they're a k-pop group with a focus on rock music.

That because it's an issue with korean music industry tbh.
In Japan, anyone can become a singer, there is no requirements like in most countries. Most trendy japanese singers used to be online music producers or online cover singers back then and that how they grew their notoriety. It's the same nowadays with people using Vtubing or others entering an Idol group to get more notoriety and contacts before leaving the group and become solo artist or make a band.
In SKorea, you are less likely to be popular or have success as a singer if you don't go into the Idol system, something that many indie koreans artist have been annoyed for years.

If you like rock you should probably be on the rock side of idols rather than stuff like Nogi. Neo Japonism, ジェメイ, stuff like that. And of course there are a lot more if you don't care so much how well they sing or you're willing to pick out the more upbeat songs.
It wasn't really region locked. It just plain wasn't available. The PV was kinda used as a tool to get people to buy the more expensive versions of CDs, so just releasing it online for free took a bit of a paradigm shift for companies in how to price their stuff and some were a lot slower. Indie companies didn't care and just put their stuff up right away though.

I became a K-pop fan after more than a decade of listening exclusively to J-pop idols. I think the concept of "idol" is pretty similar but the approach is different. I really admire idols like Sakura, who was able to succeed first as a J-pop idol and then successfully adapt to the K-pop market. I would have a lot more to say about this, but anyway I enjoyed the points you made and your videos are very nice, keep up the good work!

Kpop idols do so many activities. Even smaller lesser known groups becoming slightly popular get a lot of attention.
I mean kpop idols even go on Japanese reality shows sometimes, I rarely see happened idols do that in Korea.
Many groups are always filming clogs, behind the scenes, do their own varsity show type thing.
I also wanna say that Japanese idols are some what pigeonholed into this cutesy type aesthetic. Or sometimes risqué photoshoots if they aren’t popular, which kpop idols usually never have to do. They rather disband than do what some jpop idols have to do.
I mean siyeon from qwer was a former jpop idol in one of those pretty popular large kpop groups, she got a lot of hate from Korean fans since she did a gravure shoot since she wasn’t that popular, she eventually left and joined a kpop band and is pretty popular, and probably won’t ever have to do something like that again as long as she’s in that band.
Kpop music is also way more popular and different, like they go into different genres, I wanna say that unless there some other idols groups or something, most of jpop idols just do cute music, and I’m talking about actual jpop idols, I feel like there’s some Japanese groups that dress up kinda like idols but are a band or something and not int be real idol industry something comparable to SM, Yg, JYPE, HYBE.

There is also a ban on JPOP groups actively promoting Korean State-owned media, So, If Japanese artists want to actually promote They have to release songs in Korean or promote them on Cable TV, which affects accessibility.

Kpopper here. The last time I took Jpop seriously was 2008 with Utada Hikaru and Koda Kumi. Never got into the J-idol system, although I did dip my toes into Morning Musume but tired quickly of their cutesy sound.
It is a fact that Kpop is more rigorous and well-rounded because they outsource so much of their production to foreign experts. While Japan relies on a formula that has worked for domestic audiences for decades, using chiefly domestic producers, Korea has fine-tuned its formula for maximum reach through consultation with international marketing and production experts.
Jpop tried to catch up with it, but now it's too little too late.

There are concepts like royal road progression in Japanese music called ōdō shinkō when we talk about J-pop overall music. that's itself come from a history of jazz and rock progression in the West and their making incorporated with their traditional music. that's why their music in J-pop is much more melodic than K-pop overall.

I can swear I have very much good listening skills, not to hurt kpop fans but it's not for koreans to tell japanese how to sing. Kpop idols definitely can sing but what they lack is experience singing live in public. Kpop agencies are quick to decide that idols do not need to sing and represent normal singing voice but pre-record live singing which on the result give us the ideal live performance with no actual live perfrom. Everything that does kpop idol needs to be perfect so they do not allow their singers to actually SING before audience which is really frustrating. Japanese on the other side always aim to live performance. You could find millions of jpop idols who sing yes not perfect, yes sometimes it could be good or bad but they SING on the scene that what singer should do. Comparing to them korean idols voices are not trained I rarely see live performance in kpop shows. The good ones were 2ne1, Sistar, SNSD. I couldn't find good live singing from new kpop groups. All of them were pre-record that sounds like live but not.

I don't know if you know BiSH, but they were pretty successful overseas when it came to YT and Spotify, etc, but you weren't even able to buy their merch because you needed a valid Japanese name to register on their site. But worst is their movie and drama (or tv in general) market, where NOTHING is marketed overseas, except when Netflix or some streaming service buys it, and even then the Japanese don't care and leave everything to Netflix, which results in really bad subtitles 95% of the time and 0 PR except for the random suggestion in-app.

I don't know why people even compare. I have no real experience with KPop and don't care to be totally frank because what I've heard of it sounded like western pop, which is absolutely not my thing, but from what I've seen and read, KPop Idols are way more focused on singing and dancing, while JPop Idols are way more focused on the entertainment aspect. In Japan basically the only thing you need is to be "kawaii" and interesting and you have way higher chances of being and succeeding as an Idol than if you'd be a super good singer and performer. The only things high schoolers (at least girls) are talking about (in regards to JPop Idols) are how kawaii and funny etc they are, not how good they are at musical activities. That's also why they're not or very rarely marketed overseas, the style of Japanese entertainment is vastly different than what the "overseas" population is used to. That's not only limited to Idols or music, but even more so with movies and dramas. Most Japanese tarento (talents, people who are active in a vast variety of fields besides acting and what a lot of Idols become when they're done with their Idol activities) don't really look at US or western "colleagues" at all so they can get better at acting or be marketable overseas because they only try to cater to their domestic market and it's often enough to be "kawaii" and/or have big breasts (sorry, but unfortunately very true) or be "kakkoi" (cool in looks and personality) in case of men to get roles and be successful. The acting is absolute secondary, except for the minority that really are or want to be actors/actresses (like for example Matsuoka Mayu, Nikaido Fumi or Kuroki Haru). Which also results in A LOT of stupid Shoujo Manga related stories with a naive and pure damsel in distress that gets verbally abused by some cool looking guy who's super popular and thinks he can get away with being an absolut scumbag, because all the girls are head over heels in love with him even if he tells them how stupid and ugly they are 3 times a day. And this, contrary to the availability and style of music, didn't get better at all in the last 10 years.

The difference between those two is how the idol personalities are portrayed. Sure, both can be generated by the management but The Jpop idols are more fun to watch due to their large number of members in the group and their personalities are diverse and more close as a real person. It's like watching a sports team whose members are all cute while in K-pop, in my personal opinion, the personalities of the idols are really repetitive and manufactured as if they have found the formula. and not the majority but some Jpop idols do have skills in singing and dancing. They just could not get the chance to show since most of their songs are sung in unison or the market does not demand it. Overall, I prefer the music of J-idols.

I personally have little to no interest in k-pop, it jus feels too fake to me and the music is boring as f... Japanese music is currently the best, not just compared to Korea but to the rest of the world.

Not gonna lie….K-pop can try & compete with American (or Western) Pop. But it will NEVER exceed it.
But give them a hand for the all out effort.

The difference is how much does Japanese groups vs Korean groups take "inspiration" from AfricanAmerican culture? Korean groups are far more popular because they take more "inspiration" from AA culture. AKA more music genres (and the styles, dancing, clothing, etc that come from those musical cultures/genres).

I find it funny any comparison where kpop is not an obvious bias gets kpop fans offended. Jpop goes on variety shows WAY more often than Kpop idols. Its one of the big selling point as compared to kpop it is not one of their main focus or activities they focus on. Simple. (Alot of k fans were complaining about this in the comments) Variety shows happen much less in general in kpop as they used to have much more of a presence.
Ive also seen someone in the comments mention jidols must not have personality focused on because they look similar and then proceed to say all the good things about kpop over jpop… really?
I have been a fan of both kpop and Jpop but any comparison that says the better qualities of jpop for once brings annoying kpop fans out.

Variety is a HUGE selling point in Kpop and I don't know how you're denying this. Aside from Running Man and basically Yoo Jae-seok's entire reason for existing, the industry makes variety content for their groups in-house.
