    Error number one : people don't want to do a pre training on ground, with indo board. They come to sea first and waist tons of energy and time just to search for balance. Key element in surfing : indo board, training at home, skateboard. Paddle when sea is flat.

    The pop up is the most important part of surfing.
    If your not “up”. Your not surfing.
    First learn to do it in the white water.
    Then go to a beach that has very slow moving waves. And practice practice practice
    Surfing isn’t a part time sport.
    If you want to get go and stay good. It’s a lifelong commitment. Of surfing at least 2-3 times a week.
    Everyone wants to learn to surf until they find out how hard it is. And that it’s a commitment.
    Every time I stop surfing for 3-4 months I embarrass myself in the water.
    Surfing uses muscles not typically used.
    So if you stop, you have to rebuild them.

    I’ve only just started learning to surf as in I started yesterday and I think I’ve managed to commit all ten of these errors. Haha. Thanks for the advice and tips. Definitely a skill that will take time I think.

    Good advice in your video. It's good to practice this pop up on dry land (as in the demonstrations) until you can do it well. Also, do some push ups every day to build upper body strength. You might also want to do some squats to build your leg muscles. Also, it's good to stretch and work on your flexibility. I've taught a lot of people to surf. Everyone is different. For some people, it can be very difficult to learn to surf. But try to just have fun and you'll get better and better with more practice. Also, when learning try to find an area free from other surfers and swimmers. Larger surfboards (thicker and longer) are more stable and easier to learn on. Once you have a larger board mastered, you can move down to a much smaller and thinner board (which are more difficult to ride - but very maneuverable).

    FEEL IT...don't think it!!!
    If you can't feel it, then do it logically.... ...until you FEEL it.
    Dark room, ....visualize doing it, ....then repeat it - in the physical world.
    Your neurons will fire and make connections (Neuroplasticity) even if you're not in the water.
    Then repeat IRL.

    Is it just me or are the stages of the pop up a whole heck of a lot like sun salutations in yoga?!

    • @helenbowditch231
      @helenbowditch231  5 лет назад

      Yes absolutely! Especially the cobra / upward dog bit. Where they differ I suppose is that the sun salutations don't have a twist element, and you don't want to stick the butt in the air when popping up. People who do yoga and especially the sun salutations tend to find popping up much easier than the non-yogis.
      I try to always do a few sun salutations before every surf session because I find it the perfect warmup

    I am new to surfing as well. What are your thoughts on keeping your back arched and shoulders and head up in the normal paddling position "while" paddling to catch a wave versus putting your head and shoulders down low. There seems to be two schools of thought on this and I was of the impression that having your chin almost touching the board when paddling for a wave will help you get established on the face of the wave easier because it puts more weight on the front of the board during the take off, however I see here, you keep your shoulders and head up and in normall paddling posture. Does this just depend on the steepness and or angle of the wave or is it just a matter of two different different techniques? It does seem more practical to keep your head as you show here to minimize pearling. Thank you, great videos, very practical and helpful.

    • @helenbowditch231
      @helenbowditch231  5 лет назад +1

      If I can feel that I am definitely going to catch the wave then I keep my back arched and head up. But if it's touch and go whether or not I will catch it, then I put my head and chest down so that there is more weight at the front of my board. I have noticed this from GoPro footage and also I often wear brown zinc and I get a brown splodge mark on the nose of my board from my chin jamming down.
      However, if you do drop the head it's important that as soon as you feel that you've caught the wave you must get the head up. In these cases I will put my chicken wing hands further back on the board so my thumbs are touching the 2 bottom ribs and I press the shoulder blades together. Otherwise I find it results in a collapsing, below par pop up.
      On a longboard I generally always keep my head and chin up, but sometimes on my shortboard when the waves are tricky to catch and there are strong offshores I will be paddling frantically and kicking my feet and I will slam my chin down. So my answer to your question is that I think it's better to try to always keep head and chest up, but there are going to be occasions especially on shortboards and fish shaped boards when you will want to get the head down. Hope that helps! Good luck

    • @hrburrell
      @hrburrell 5 лет назад +1

      @@helenbowditch231 thank you, it does help. I only longboard, so this would explain why I keep pearling so much. I will adjust my posture. Cheers.

      @@hrburrell Your head is use as pendulum. If the wave is hollow, then arch back, if is mushy/weak/choppy then set it forward. Overtime it'll come naturally.

    Hi could u give me some advice on how to handle steeper wave? it often cause me nosediving after take off. it feels like I am being pushed the wave (i was standing like on 1/3 wave- the highest part of the wave) and go straight into the the water instead of sliding down, i couldn’t figure out how to catch steeper green wave.

    How do I stop nosediving?

    • @helenbowditch231
      @helenbowditch231  6 лет назад +7

      There are 4 main reasons why we nosedive, think of it as the 'nosedive quadfector'. The most common reason is lack of speed. If you are not paddling at at least the same speed as the wave you are trying to catch then you will probably nosedive. Second reason is positioning, if you try to catch the wave when the wave face is at a 90 degree steep angle then unless you are Kelly Slater you will probably nosedive. Try to position yourself so that you catch the wave when the wave face is at a 45 degree angle. Have a protractor in your head. Thirdly, if you are lying too far forward on the board then this a recipe for a nosedive. Finally poor posture with the shoulders down and the legs apart will probably result in nosediving.
      So my advice is paddle fast, check your positioning, be in the sweet spot of the surfboard, and have good posture. Good luck!

    • @joesurfer9754
      @joesurfer9754 6 лет назад +1

      It's called "pearling". The one sole reason you pearl is because you have your body trimed wrong on your board. You need to find the magic spot of trim. It may be slightly further back on long period swell. Farther forward on short period swell.
