    This is a walkthrough of Discovey Synth by DiscoDSP (iPad, Mac, Windows, Linux), based on the ClaviaNord Lead 2 synth. This has been on desktop for a while but just became available for iPad. There is much to like, but also seriously a lot to be improved to in this initial iPad release. Please note that this is a port of DiscoDSP Discovery, not of their newer and more powerful Discovery Pro. Additionally, some features of the desktop version appear not to be available at present in the iPad version as they rely on mouse and keyboard combos which seem not to have corresponding gestures in the touch version.
    Courtesy of Luxthor from the ABF, here are some differences between Discovery and Discovery Pro:
    "5000 presets vs 3500
    12 oscilators vs 8 oscilators
    128-voice vs 16-voice
    12 filters vs 8 filters
    4x oversampling vs 2x
    Wave oscilator vs none
    Graphic envelope modulation vs none
    Edit option on every group segment."
    Courtesy of Samu of the ABF, here is an edited description of the very convoluted workflow for saving your own presets inside the app's preset system: "Create a user bank, once you’ve tweaked an existing preset, go to Menu, Copy Preset, select an empty slot in the user bank, then paste & save."
    User Rapidfire offered this suggestion regarding making new banks:
    "open the Files app/My iPad/Discovery/Assets, just long press on any folder and select Duplicate, long press on duplicate file and rename it (change bank number to last position)."

      Thank you for this lovely message Josh! I saw you joined earlier and already sent you a welcome message on Patreon. Your message really rings true. It is really shocking how much people take RUclipsrs for granted, even when we are very open, as I am, about how meagre the rewards are for us. It is even worse when so few people support you in a niche which is basically all about consumption! So yes: I hope more people read your message and say ‘You know what, it is indeed about bloody time I gave Gav some financial support too’. Thanks again Josh.

    With such a large amount of presets it would have been nice if you can mark a preset as a favorite, like we can do with a lot of other iOS synth apps. And filter all your favorites to quickly find them again. So many things that are overlooked and rushed, just like you mentioned. Such a pitty since it looks and sounds like such a promising app. Really wish the developer would have spent more time on this port. So far i have restrained myself from buying it. The future will tell if additional updates might come to actually improve this app. I have to say that i appreciate your homest review more than other reviews i have seen that just praise this synth without going into what’s all wrong with it. Good stuff Gavin.

      Thnx Ed. The dev clearly doesn't appreciate my honest reviews as they are ignoring my emails and I did not get a free code for this even for my own use. They have also declined to publicise this video, while they have promoted vids that speak only of the positives. Yet, this video continues to outperform those other vids by a significant margin. That's shoddy behaviour from the dev. I will continue to review these apps, as necessary, with total integrity. I hope that other reviewers in the space stop only discussing the positives of apps and pandering to devs for the sake of a measly free code. Everyone benefits from honest reviews, even devs benefit, if you look at things from a 'big picture' view. Hard on the ego maybe, but better for their wallet in the long run. This was a sloppy release indeed. People need to know that, the devs need to up their game, and they themselves will benefit if they do so. They should be thanking me instead of ignoring me, frankly.

      @@GavinskisTutorials in general app developers are really approachable and value the input of users or content creators. I read on the AB forum too how unresponsive they are to feedback. But i guess these guys fall in a different categorie, and at least I learned to be a lot more cautious from now on about the apps that they release. Your integrity to offer us genuine and honest reviews adds a lot of credibility to your content and channel. So that is definitely worth something Gavin. I prefer reviews and attitude like that more than content from channels that just want to have the videos out first and only focus on positives and avoid the negatives. I assume that their reviews need to be taken with a grain of salt at best.

Good thing I spotted it on RUclips right before I was about to buy this app. Great synth, but the lack of ability to create your own preset banks and the blurry interface are critical points for me. Apparently you can create your own preset banks - I just added some info about that in the pinned comment. It's still fiddly. I doubt the blurry UI is fixable. I hope I'm proved wrong, as that is indeed a very major flaw

  • @mauadachi

    Fully agree. It sounds amazing but the UI is blurry, the parameters not exposed is quite sloppy, couldn't save presets as well and I'm a bit disappointed its a strip down version of the old Discovery, not the Pro one.

    Thanks for your honest transparent review! I'm noticing some censorship that is really detrimental to the community on "another channel". On a side note, I checked DiscoDSP's site in the context of this launch today, and found that there were 2 different versions of Discovery available on PC/Mac: the red UI (or Pro) version being double the cost of the other version (white UI). I was surprised that the iOS version had the Red UI, which would hint that it would inherit the Pro version features. However, as I watched another video showing off the product I saw in the list of available filters that the new 4 additional "analog sounding" filters advertised on DiscoDSP's site as being Moog modelled filters had been left out. I thought it was worth mentioning for obvious reasons! Your demonstration that there were no Discovery parameters visible in AUM was the cherry on top 😄 . At least OB-Xd 3 is in a usable state now so hey at least that's a win for that one!

    • @Silent_Stillness
      @Silent_Stillness Месяц назад +1

      Oh and also about your report of strange parameter changes in the UI that instantly reminds me of what I found out with OB-Xd 3 and which still hasn't been addressed: OB-Xd 3, whether it's in Standalone mode or in AUv3 mode SYSTEMATICALLY listens to MIDI that's being output by devices that are connected to the iPad via Bluetooth OR via Network Session MIDI. This behaviour entirely bypasses AUM's filtering system. My guess is that you're experiencing something similar in this case.
      That problem alone made it impossible for me to use OB-Xd 3 at all until they released the MIDI channel selection option, which only allows me to circumvent the problem to this day. DiscoDSP has never responded to a single one of my emails either when I reported all this. I think now more than ever is the time for people in the community to vote with their wallets. Affordability should never be an excuse for seriously flawed instruments, as it just wastes people's time and degrades the quality of the user experience making music on iOS.

    • @GavinskisTutorials
      @GavinskisTutorials  Месяц назад +1

      It's very bewildering to me that, just after the ob-xd release, where so many people pointed out bugs etc after release, this comes out with so little attention to detail. Hopefully some fixes and improvements will come in the next week or two

    • @Silent_Stillness
      @Silent_Stillness Месяц назад

      @@GavinskisTutorials I would even go further and argue that this kind of release (Discovery), especially considering its price is very damaging to this platform as in my view it literally mathematically pollutes/dilutes the pool of apps that are worthy offerings in an ever expanding ocean of grbo (not to use other words which I'm thinking nonetheless). The comparative price tag baits people that are familiar with the platform into thinking that it's going to be a quality product whereas it absolutely is not. Between:
      1. The dev being 100% unresponsive to emails
      2. The inherent hassle it represents to initiate a refund procedure with the app store
      3. the multiple major ways in which this product is dysfunctional (and to a lesser extent OB-Xd 3)
      4. The inherent difficulty for YT content creators (such as myself) to gain access to sufficient exposure on YT to be able to leverage this exposure for whistle-blowing purposes when appropriate to drive positive change
      5. The de-facto deplorable abusive censorship that can be observed on this platform in situations where truth and transparency conflict with financial interests
      More than ever DiscoDSP 100% deserves to be called out. With all that said, I will still recognize that for people that are specifically into Oberheim style sounds, considering the extreme rarity of the role that it fulfills, OB-Xd 3 at its launch price still makes sense considering its current state, despite being seriously flawed. The latest major problem I've identified with OB-Xd 3 yesterday is that if a user uses AUM to save OB-Xd 3 patches, it remembers the MIDI channel on which the synth was configured when the patch was saved in OB-Xd 3 directly. In the context of the Bluetooth/Network Session MIDI issue I mentioned earlier, users like myself have no choice but to restrict the active MIDI channel in OB-Xd 3 directly to just a single specific channel at the level of the plugin directly (as opposed to AUM) in order to effectively prevent OB-Xd 3 from listening to MIDI data (coming from Bluetooth/Network Session MIDI devices) which is not targeting OB-Xd 3 as in that use case OB-Xd 3 bypasses AUM's MIDI filtering system. In that context the implication is that users can't just switch between AUM OB-Xd 3 saved patches, they have to systematically manually adjust the MIDI channel of their saved synth patch in AUM whenever they load a patch through the AUM method if there happens to be a MIDI channel mismatch in the particular context in which a particular instance of OB-Xd 3 happens to be used. I would still rather do that than trust the patch management system of OB-Xd 3, but I'll inevitably end up testing it to see if it allows me to bypass that problem because it's obviously a major inconvenience.

Nothing grabs straight away plus lots of strange and annoying dysfunctionalities associated with last century computing . Hey DickoDSP , lets party like is 1999 , yeah 🍅

      Yes, I actually forgot to mention the tapping issues. Because I was using a mouse in this video, I didn't experience them, as this behaves better with a mouse. The best thing really is for you and other people to write to DiscoDSP expressing your disappointment. And perhaps to ask for a refund if the downsides don't get fixed and annoy you too much. It's a great sounding app but it is genuinely, in many respects, one of the shoddiest releases I can recall ever having come across in this niche, so I understand people's anger and i can't gloss over these when making a vid on it.

      I beg to differ but don't have the time or motivation to go into a long post about why. You're not into it, that's fine
