South Philly’s Members Only Italian Social Club

- This members-only restaurant is tucked between residential row homes in south Philadelphia.
Besides a small red neon sign outside, nothing indicates there’s a 100-year-old Italian eatery that serves as a time capsule for south Philly’s Italian immigrants. To get into the dining area, patrons must tap a buzzer and give their membership cards to a hand extending through a hole in the entranceway’s second door.
Watch owner Joey Baldino give MUNCHIES exclusive access to Palizzi Social Club, show how its incredible food like spaghetti with crabs, caesar salad, and delicious grilled octopus is made - and hear why preserving his heritage and neighborhood’s history is more important than ever to him.
With “house rules,” including things like “no blogging, reviewing, or tagging on social media,” Palizzi Social Club is the definition of “word of mouth.”

This is a club that can only exist in a dense urban place. The walkability breeds community and relationships. I love it.
And everyone has to have money .....
That's Philly for you!
@@dmac7403 They got money because the Mob been controlling there underworld for years. But they didn't mess with the Muslims
@@dmac7403 Right, this man must be one of the elites. Philly is 🗑️.
Not densed. ...many places like exist in small towns too.
You can just feel the authenticity in this guy. Way to go.
It's SO important to preserve these traditions as so many of them are being lost. Club is a very special place. Nice to know this neighborhood is preserved and still exists.
⌚
In which state do you live?
@@ceooflonelinessinc.267 I'm from Portland, Maine which has a high Italian population. I spent many of my years in places like this because I was part of a 1st generation Italian family although not Italian myself. That's why I understand the importance of this club.
MrDuckSauce you're reported for hate speech.
@@martyrose yet you are supporting racism and hate by supporting these places.
I like how Chef walks up the street and says that his aunt lives here, uncle lives there. Design is like stepping back in time with all that terrific wood paneling, old photos on the wall and black and white flooring. And it's nice how he's got his bulldog by his side, too.
Stories like this are what keep me interested in food. You can’t fake it when someone weaves their soul into their vision and their craft. To do justice by your family heritage is truly commendable.
Man this guy really loves his job. He sound his passion for sure.
Not being disparaging to other cultures; Italians, are the definition, of passion‼️🗣
I would to imagine the profit.
I have the Palizzi SC cookbook, it’s excellent and a beautiful tribute to the neighborhood. As a descendent of Abruzzi immigrants who moved to Philly, and now that I live across the country from Philly, it’s my go-to when feeling homesick... I even just made the stromboli's for New Years day. For those looking, it's called 'Dinner at the Club: 100 Years of Stories and Recipes from South Philly's Palizzi Social Club'.
I want to go! Looks fun and the food looks delicious. Unfortunately I've never been to Philly. Good to know there's a cookbook.
The first one
My first girlfriend was from South Philly and I spent a lot of time there. It's just a great cultural gem with amazing people, history, and culture. Love to see it's being preserved in this way.
No cell phones at the club Patrons encouraged to engage in old school conversations. Just wonderful.
Wow, this is fantastic! So good to see the old school Italian traditions being kept alive and well!!
We need more of this too many Italian Americans have lost the connection to the culture and became madigans
It is but in s Philly they are fading fast
I love the way this interview was produced, all the voices, the way it unfolded and we really got the entire perspective from beginning to end. Great production and editing. Loved this story. You can tell this man loves what he does.
Love how there’s no narrator or annoying host, just the people sharing their stories. This series and Street Food Icons are my favorite on Munchies
And he loves people.
The way everyone speaks about each other. Made me forget this was about food.
This makes me so happy to know this place exists. If I EVER get to Philly, I am going to try to become a member. This place is a national treasure.
What does the other comment say? It's been hidden. If it said that you shouldn't go to Philly unless you have lots of money, like $450,000 or so to buy a house, then I wouldn't go. This place eats the weak, poor and stupid.
@@johnnymcblaze What the hell are you saying? There's definitely affordable parts of South Philly to live in I was born and raised there trust me I know!
i grew up around the corner from this place... this area is and will forever be my favorite area in Philadelphia. shout out to yall for covering this little gem
Having grown up in South Philly 5th and Tasker, Italian food and pizza always been my obsession along with my favorite tiramisu. Beautiful story!
A few years ago, I had the pleasure of going to this wonderful place while visiting in from Cleveland and staying with friends that live in South Philly who had recently become members and were able to bring us. I loved the place and people, as well as the no cell phones out rule. Be social with who you're with and the other members and guests.
More restaurants should enforce this
what an amazing job Joey has done, to preserve the history, and soul of this special place, I'm sure his parents are both so proud. food looks fantastic 😙
Love the vibe this place seems to have and the food looks delicious.
In which state do you live?
Way to go Joey. Two of my favorite Philly Chefs
you have mentored under or cooked for and are
friends with. Great and thanks, for bringing back the Italian social club.
YUM! Stromboli, Check this out. Brings back memories with my Papa.
Best of luck Joey, this move by you and Dolores helping you out
brought tears to my eyes, I so miss Philly.
Man I love this. I was a member of the Mt. Carmel social club in Norristown. It’s a shame how they died out. Beautiful place Joey. 🙏🏽
As a 1st gen Italian American from the Philly burbs, it’s awesome to have our traditions live on. It’s up to us to preserve and carry this, teach our kids and community or it’s lost. So glad he opened the place up for all. Many old school Italians don’t get the importance to open up and let the “new” gen carry on. Wishing these guys another c’ent anni of success.
Caeser is giving off those "I know it was you Fredo" vibes.
Awesome love that they preserved their heritage and culture in these times ..
I love that such places still can exist - it is very important to preserve and maintain such traditions and culture, so everyone can enjoy them
Wow. That place sounds fantastic ❤ and the food looked delicious too 👌
I LOVE places like this that keep the traditions of their past and lineage!
Unfortunately all too often in this world, children don’t want to carry on businesses of their parents or grandparents. This is so sad as those traditions, recipes and crafts are lost forever.
I wish Filippo Palizzi Social Club the greatest success and another hundred years of business and success!
Cheers! 🥂
easy to say from the outside looking in but everyone is entitled to their own dreams and ambitions. If you're family wanting you to take over a 4th generation accounting firm would you feel obliged just because of expectation? Just because a restaurant is more alluring than an accounting firm doesnt change the principle.
What a fabulous story of our diverse American culture! Every person who comes to our country brings their own special spice to the overall human menu! I loved hearing about this special Club and these special people. Thank you. All the best in 2023!
I could watch a two-hour special about this place. Amazing!
I had the privilege of being invited here in early 2022. And it's every bit what they show here. No one was on phones, people taking, great music and vibe.
Food was delicious and the drinks were perfect.
I really enjoyed myself.
Didn’t want this to end. What a great story and place
Exactly what I was thinking. This made my entire day, I wish it was like 3 hours long + 300000 more hours
When I was growing there was a sense of community. It's not like that really so this place kinda reminds me of that. Hope this place goes on for generations.
Hailing from an Italian enclave; Wooster street/square in New Haven. I totally relate to the familiar places and good times. It’s much the same from one place or another. Some may be bigger, others smaller, one area of the old country or another. However, the one constant is, family, neighborhood and fraternity. Viva Italia e Americo‼️🇮🇹🇺🇸❤
I hope and I pray that they were able to make it through 2020 but I also thought he said that there's no interviews and there's no nothing like that but it looks amazing that someone can carry on their heritage and a time like this where a lot of people don't really care about their family's heritage or what made their family who they are today
I want a philly steak cheese pls
In which state do you live?
Punctuations. They exist.
It's there
Love this entire concept.
This is awesome what a piece of history
Haven’t even gotten too deep into the food part but already I am liking this place based on the house rules alone. Love old school throwbacks like this jawn 👍
You must be from Philly 😂 go pay that Jawn a visit lol
man, i'd love to be a member of this club. the vibes are amazing
What a totally wonderful club. The right place, the right people… Doesn’t happen by accident …congratulations….All the best… Chris🇨🇦
Now I wanna go. The food and vibe of it all is amazing .

I grew up in the Boston area and there were tons of clubs...Canadian, Polish, Irish, Italian, a place called the Penny Post and a lot of older folks and family members would go out and have their fun😊
Really Canadian? I knew about Irush & Italian but Canadian, are you serious?!
I’m right down the street and would love to be invited. The Italian food in south Philly is absolutely amazing. I’m both hungry and inspired by this.
trust me when I say they will never invite you and me there 😂
@@IsmokeHiphopLive lmaoooo right 😂
@@IsmokeHiphopLive I was wondering! 😂
You would absolutely be invited. There’s no discrimination. Just authentic people that like good food.
i’ve lived in the italian market for 5 years.. the neighborhood feel is truly unlike any other place on earth. it’s crammed full of great food, characters and familiar faces where everyone knows your name if you show your face enough. such a gem.
I work at a private social club in Boston and we are most definitely tucked way into the depths of back bay , privacy at its finest .
love these stories
Awesome! I love the tradition, keep it going brother!! Things like this are what is keeping people like me going, beautiful food. I wish I knew a member! People take note, put the phones down!!!
Beautiful. Good on you sir.
Amazing food and experience! Lovely restaurant with true love
I love everything about this. Well done!!!
6:40 - Mancuso's is the best. No questions about it. RIP to the last Mancuso owner, Phil. Great guy. Glad his wife could spread the knowledge of Mancuso's to these new owners.
Edit : 7:10 - Walked right past the museum I work out. Crazy to see Vice in South Philly.
That's cool bro but you really shouldn't dox yourself like that lol just giving away your full name and place you work to however many thousands of people might see this comment.
Lived in this neighborhood for close to 10 years before having to move away for work. Best part of Philly, and I always love going "home!" My family isn't originally from Philly and we are from another part of Italy, so I actually never knew about this specific social club. I would have loved to have joined!
Wow this place looks amazing, imagine what a treat it would be to dine there, food looks amazing, atmosphere the same.
I bet if they did a tv series on this place is would go viral.
Amazing. Great job keep it going.
Reminds me of the South Philly I grew up in fifty years ago. May it last another hundred years.
This is cool to know!!
Love this! We need more of this in our country.
its a great way to keep the b1Ack$ out. thats why i love it
Just say you want segregation back quit dancing around it 😂
Love South Philly
I think it is MOST EXCELLENT that when you inherited the restaurant, that you were also it's Chef, the "veins behind the artery,"
amazing:) i really want to go. the food looks incredible !
This place looks amazing I'm in Lancaster and wish we had something like this
Amazing stuff chef, great to see Mike there as well
His ancestors would be very, very proud. Hope I get to eat at a place like this in my lifetime.

Bravo for keeping this original and not chasing the clout or fame. I wish I could have a martini there myself.
South Philly girl here I never heard of this place 👨🏾🍳 really enjoyed watching 🍷
Food looks amazing
I was raised in south jersey(near Atlantic City) & my family from Philly. My poppops family had a little spot during the Great Depression that would cook food for late night workers! I just had my 1rst baby this November. I no longer live in Jersey & can not wait to take our son back home to meet my family & see my home🥰oh and fly eagles fly🦅🤙🏽
Thank you
I bet you the food and the atmosphere are exquisite 💖💯
Awesome! Looks like a nalstagic place to hang out!

How can I become a member?
But youre a woman?
I bet u guys have a blast in there 😊💃🏾🔥🔥🤷🏾♀️
This looks similar to my hood here in Australia called Brunswick. Many Italian shops and social clubs here. Looks great guys
We're not just Cheese steak murder in Philly. Very diverse culinary scene. Lots for great places to eat packed in them little ass blocks in South Philly. Italian, Mexican & Vietnamese/Cambodian Americans in this part of SP.
Loved this...
Great content 🙂👍🇮🇹
That food looks so good the kind your mates Nonna makes....but elevated
Finally! I always drive pass this house and just assumed someone loved the neon lights lol
I love Philly so much.
This place looks great! I had a boyfriend in the ‘80s who found places like this in Los Angeles. Good times.
What a cool place. If I'm ever fortunate to visit Philly, I would visit Zahav also
Love this video
The environment is out of this world in an amazing wonderful way from what I gather I’ve never been inside and the food needs no reviews you guarantee it’s great. I like the rules and I like the way the president runs the show here.. there is definitely something magical about that place in special. I can tell all the food looks good, but all the drinks look amazing.
Great to see this Club! You know you're in a serious Deli with all those Cento jars on the shelves! @6:37
Seeing the red light on and waiting to get in is my favorite part.
If I ever live in philly, this the kinda place I would like to call home.
I respect the high level of self respect that you have and try to embody that same energy at Paulie Gee’s in Baltimore.
If I was in Philly this is the kind of place that wouldn’t let me join their club. 😂😂
I didn’t see a single brown skinned person in this video.
@@majorlazor5058 Maybe it because of the weather
It would be amazing to have different social clubs with different ethnic food all around the city.
