Tarja was amazing and we will always love her, she was the reason a lot of us fell in love with Nightwish. At this point she didn't know that she was going to be leaving the band, but the rest of them did. Awesome reaction!

You handled the Tarja-Floor discussion só well! The comparison/competition is completely useless. Why should we choose? They both play a part in the story of this incredible band. The band is happy now. You hear that in their music and you see that on and off stage.

That intro by Jukka was amazing though!! Kai is more technical, but Jukka...he just draws the eye, he has so much energy and he's just such a showman, it's so good. I miss Jukka ❤️ also... "the Nightwish tingle" is so accurate, haha!

Great to see a reaction to Nightwish with Tarja. I love Nightwish and all the singers they have had and has. Tarja, Anette and Floor are all amazing and brought their own sound, style and vibe to the band and songs, all equally great. Let's love them all and appreciate all the era's of Nightwish.

Do Slaying the Dreamer or Whishmaster with Tarja from that concert. It's amazing.

No need to compare! Stopped following Nightwish after the split and rediscovered the band 4 years ago. I had the pleasure of listening to all their songs during Tarja's era and enjoy a lot of Floor's presence. Both bring me joy and there will be no going back anyway. Same with Floor by the way. I liked her songs with After Forever. This is different but I don't feel like I have to choose one band over the other.

Its all good and should not ever be a versus.

Very underrated song, nice to start with Tarja with this one. Most reactors go with the Phantom of the Opera which is also great of course. The whole concert is great anyway, more songs from here, Sleeping Sun, The Siren, Wishmaster. These are specially good with Tarja.
Your comments are spot on as always, your knowledge about the band is growing so fast!
The only thing wrong is how you pronounce Tarja, it's with a rolling R, Tarrrrria :P

@@ThomFoolery1 Sleeping Sun is a good song to hear how they changed her singing style for the last two of her albums. There's two versions of the song, one recorded 1999 and then the other recorded 2005. It's the first mentioned she sang almost always, but in End of an Era she sang the 2005 version, and I don't like it at all.

@@ThomFoolery1 Of course there's the thing that she had a flu in End of an Era concert and all her songs suffer there (Ghost Love Score the most: her voice was so spent in the latter half of that song) so I avoid that concert like plague, but also the singing style to me doesn't go well with this song. The remastered version has great quality, there are some remastered versions (another very good is Swanheart) that have much better audio and video quality than End of an Era concert. Unfortunately, most people only know EoaE songs as early on it was the best quality, and its songs got most views.

  • @Eulaalia10

Here you saw a perfect example of Tarja era and the beauty and the beast contrast. That was one of the greatest ingredients of Nightwish back then and I suppose what some of us are missing, perhaps. You do not get the same contrast with Floor and Marco. Here you can see glimpses of Tarja fluttering like a fairy with her yellow gown across the stage. Her style is so different in comparison to Floor. Now that in mind, whenever you have the chance to check out Ghost Love Score from the same concert see how Tarja actually makes this song a love song and how the choir gets a bigger role in creating the atmosphere in the end. It is like two different songs with Tarja and Floor and I think they should be listened so. As much as I like Floor's version I hardly ever think it as a love song as I do with Tarja's version. They awake different feelings. What is great that we can enjoy all the different versions and we do not have to be mean about it. Not forgetting Anette whose era lifted Nightwish to mainstream. I actually have those cds on continous play in my car.

Neither Tarja or the crowd knew what was about to happen after this concert. This concert was only titled "End of An Era" after Tarja's firing; it was deceivingly called "Once Upon a Tour" during. This concert just showcased how bombastic Nightwish was back then (alot more Iron Maiden influences in Nightwish back then), how big they were in their Home Country, and how emotionally charged the atmosphere was that night. They knew it was their last night with her, and they played like it. Makes it look incredibly obvious when you watch the DVD now.

Jukka always knew what sounds great and what sounds Nightwish. My favorite drummer ever! This concert is pure gold from start to finish, and I really recommend that you do the whole thing, but at least "Slaying the Dreamer" has this same kind of aggression. More "iconic" Tarja songs are "Wishmaster", "Nemo" and "Sleeping Sun". This is probably the best version on this DVD available: ruclips.net/p/PLexzLA11Cst25qKz-jqq513Dr02I2jG4q

Hi Thomas and Parisa. In relative terms, I am a newbie myself to the band. I found the whole Symphonic Metal genre when I discovered an all-female quartet called 'Exit Eden' cover one of my favourite songs from back in the day when I was first making my own musical choices. That song was 'Fade to Grey' (written by Midge Ure and Rusty Egan) and recorded by Visage in 1980. As with most discoveries on RUclips, I took a chance on some of the recommendations down the right-hand side, and discovered Within Temptation and Nightwish. Having fallen in love with the band, I discovered the politics surrounding the band. I must confess, I really don't get all of the antagonism concerning which lead singer is best. For me, the question simply doesn't exist. It has been 15 years since Tarja left the band, and whatever your thoughts concerning her dismissal, any enmity that those die-hard fans have, surely needs to be directed at Anette and not Floor?? I simply can't understand why there is still so much controversy surrounding her appointment back in 2013? Maybe these so-called 'fans feel threatened by Floor's vocal abilities and have tried to diminish or discredit her in some way? I wouldn't expect you to comment (as this is your channel and you wouldn't wish to fracture your audience) but I can. Too much oily water has flowed beneath the bridge for this to be a relevant discussion anymore. Simply enjoy the excellent music and enjoy the fact that ALL of the back catalogue can be performed in concert once more! See ya.

    • @ThomFoolery1
      @ThomFoolery1  3 года назад

Thanks Kevin! Well put and I completely understand your points. I also agree that comparing singers, bands, original vs cover etc. All debates like this are subjective and often cause arguments and negativity. We felt the need to comment a little but not take any sides. Nightwish is amazing, no matter what form they take. 🙂

    • @Aurinkohirvi
      @Aurinkohirvi 3 года назад

Anette doesn't deserve the enmity either, she had nothing to do with the break up. Most Tarja's zealous fans left Nightwish a long ago, and yeah, the band got really a lot of hate because how the break-up was done. RUclips was still a very minor site when this Nightwish dividing thing erupted, so I don't think YT ever saw that fury of zealous Tarja's fans. Currently most Nightwish reaction videos watching people came with Floor. Maybe 70% of the reaction channel people are her fans, 30% Tarja's. And there is an active reaction channel group with the Floor fans (who also have a Discord channel). As a result, nowadays in reaction channels the zealous people are mostly Floor's fans.
And yeah, there's also quite a few who don't name their favorite, and equally cheer for all of them. But you can see from viewcounts how it really is.

One of my all time favorites. And I don't care whether Tarja, Annette or Floor sings this one as long as it's with Marko. 😁 He just works with no matter who, the song itself is great and works with all three vocal styles. Every version just gives you a slightly different feeling depending on the female vocals. 😊
Perfect songs for Tarja: Phantom of the Opera with Marko - same concert for range or for her softer side Sleeping Sun. Another one I love is Siren (another favorite with Marko in it - shocker 😁).
For Annette: Slow, Love, Slow (a bit jazzy) or The Crow, The Owl and The Dove (both mellow), Rest Calm and Sahara. With her I am one of those who recommends sticking to the studio versions. Just not many live videos with good audio around. And she shines more in the studio (at least in my opinion, but that's a matter of taste). The only good live video I can think of is Slow, Love, Slow. Oh and when you're sad that Halloween is over I highly recommend Scaretale. 🤡😈

Remember always that in time it is natural that all musicians develop...so in that sense pls. no comparison cause it does not make sense that way. But yes this sounds awesome as yesterday. Tarja has a certain kind of epicness in her voice and her presence is a bit more distant, I'd say she is in a way mystical (cheesy term, but here we go).
Floor is very epic too, and in my opinion the superior performer, plus way more versatile.
But there IS something in Tarja's presence when combined to her voice that makes her unique. This may sound negative for Tarja, but I think the element which makes her unique, among others is that she doesn't feel relatable in the same way that Floor does, which makes her a bit larger than life, like a Diva (capitalisation intentional). I love this track a lot but there are not a lot of live recordings with Floor on vocals so it's great to see Tarja. Floor is my favorite of the 3 singers, but without Tarja to create the whole vocal dynamic that's such a huge part of what makes Nightwish incredible, there would never have been a need for someone of Floor's abilities to eventually replace her. Tarja set an incredibly high bar for vocals. You should listen to the studio track (it's on Once) because Tuomas' keyboard solo is even more impressive.

This song is soooooo good. To me, as a long time NW fan, floor is more versatile and more listenable for long periods of time. Tarja is brilliant but her style wears on me after a bit. Kinda like someone who can only do a standard death growl. I need the variety. But this song i prefer with Tarja.
I recommend doing another couple songs from this concert before poet and the pendulum just to get the full impact. Everdream and probably Nemo

Often people in Anglo-Saxon countries don't like operatic vocals. But then that's popular in Eastern and Southern Europe, and thus also in Latin America.

      @mozsab 3 года назад +1

@@Aurinkohirvi that’s a good point but I don’t think thats the full explanation. I adore Tarja and I think she was limited by tuomas stylistically. Operatic vocals are great, just not appropriate for all songs and Tuomas kinda said “do it this way”. There was a massive shift on century child. Century child felt experimental to me. They added Marco which was huge. Tuomas expanded his song writing. Once was the perfected version of century child. The “big 3” nightwish songs all came on or after Once. I believe that had Tarja stayed after Once, she would have been allowed to use different techniques. It kinda started to show on Romanticide. I doubt she could’ve pulled off Yours is an Empty Hope though :)

@@mozsab "The big 3" is a personal choise. After Tarja Tuomas was free to compose what he wanted, but what did he do? This is his comment: "The music hasn't changed that much, I think. I hear all those comments saying that this is a complete new start, that the album is something completely different, and I really disagree. The soul of the music, the orchestra and choir, heavy guitars, ballads - the same elements are still there, it's just the voice that has changed. And even though it's a completely different voice, I also think that we left out the opera two albums ago! Even Tarja wasn't singing with that style on "Century Child" and "Once" anymore, so is that change really that radical and dramatic - I don't think so, actually."
Neither do I, he kept composing symphonic metal for a sporano vocalist.
As Tuomas said, they did change the style Tarja sings for her last two albums. They left back vibrato and legato and the most operatic songs. Yes she has never been into raspy rock vocals... but neither has Nightwish.
Tuomas has always liked for example folk music, and he is has been doing it side by side with Nightwish now with his and Troy's other band Auri. If I was nasty, I could claim Floor limited him to do those songs in Nightwish. And he has composed a lot to other bands as well. So Nightwish hasn't ever limited what he could do. In fact Nightwish has had a few of them folksongs in NW albums as well, plenty of ballads... and all those in Tarja's era too. Later he wrote even jazz and gospel to Anette's album.

They had been in troubles since Wishmaster tour at least.
The band wanted to tour much more than Tarja wanted or could. That was probably the biggest divide. Also Tuomas for sure was romantically interested in Tarja, but she didn't feel the same way, and in this tour she met Marcelo, her future husband. But it was actually Tarja that told the band first that she will leave, only her notice was to a later date: she told she will do one more album and its world tour. The guys however came to conculsion that it is better to do now, and fired her without a warning.

This song is about Marcelo Cabuli, former Nightwish singer Tarja Turunen’s husband, who is accused by the band of “corrupting” Tarja’s soul with his greed for money, which ultimately led to her being kicked out of the band in 2005.

I do not believe in the version of the facts that the band told. The relationship between Tarja and the band had not been good for some years. Because
of this, Tarja decided to leave and communicated her decision to the group. The band
then convinced her to stay longer and record another album after "Once", the fifth
group's album. It turns out that, unlike agreed, the group planned and wrote a letter of
resignation to Tarja without her knowing it. At the end of the show "End of an Era", the
band delivered the letter to Tarja, with the recommendation that she should not read it at
that time. The following day that same letter was published on the band's website. In
short, the band accused Tarja of being a diva and also criticized her husband, Marcelo.
Tarja's dismissal was completely unnecessary. She had already told the group,
approximately 2 years in advance, that she would leave the band. It seems to me that the
group tried to punish her for that decision by launching a public letter with attacks on
her and her husband. Some say that Marco was the one who gave an ultimatum saying
he would leave the group if Tarja was not fired. If any differences were unbearable, it
would be enough to end the contract in a civilized manner, as any mature person does.
However, the band preferred to plan and write the letter without Tarja knowing it, they
had the coldness to record the last show with her (End of an Era concert), deliver what
was written to her at the end of the concert, recommend that she not read at that
moment, and publish the content of the letter the next day on band website. Because of
that the band lost a lot of fans. Many of my friends, for example, stopped listening to
Nightwish at the time. For me, the letter says more about the band than about Tarja.
After the accusations made by the band, Tarja's husband came out in defense of her. He
received, answered and made available on the internet more than 130 answers to
questions sent by fans from all over the world. Tarja also wrote a public letter
responding to the group. In it, she did not attack the band. In short she said she was
shocked and sad, and said that she did not recognize herself in the description that the
band made of her. Particularly, I believe in Tarja's version. The band used to treat Tarja
very bad. For example, she was attacked once, in the middle of the show, and the band
did nothing. At the ocasion, a crazy guy invaded the stage and tried to abuse Tarja, but
the band continued playing as if nothing was happening. They also did nothing in the
backstage. Tarja was conforted by Marcelo at the time, a person the group just had
known. Incidentally, Anette, the second vocalist, was also fired. She was pregnant, was
sick during the tour, and then the group decided to replace her with Floor. Here are
      some sources:

@@ThomFoolery1 What a coincidence that I shared these links related to Tarja's dismissal just when you were researching the subject. Glad you decided to search! Unfortunately, most fans, especially the new, just read the letter the band wrote, but there is much more. It is important to look at all sides. I am a longtime fan of the band and followed the resignation episode. Considering what I saw, mainly in what you can see in the links of my previous post, I think the band tried to burn Tarja's public image with the letter and with the following album, "Dark Passion Play", in which the song "The poet and the pendulum" was released. Tuomas went into depression after Tarja's resignation, and I believe "The poet and the pendulum" expresses his feelings of guilt for everything that happened. Tuomas and Tarja have known each other since a very young age, and, considering the lyrics that Tuomas composed, and the fact that he says that Tarja was the voice that best expressed his feelings, there are suspicions that Tuomas suffered from an unrequited love for Tarja.

@@ThomFoolery1 I don't see why people encourage reactions to do "research" for Poet and the Pendelum, it does not make for a genuine reaction. Its basically research to just read up on Tuomas version of the whole Tarja spectacle, painting him as a sad martyr who got all the hate thrown at him - that's hardly the truth. He did some seriously fucked up things, like lying to Tarja every day for 9 months, knowing he was not going to fulfil his side of the bargain they had mutually agreed to. On top of that, he threw some half-truths in that letter, attacking her character in ways that made him look like a jealous boyfriend. The backlash he received by fans and media was 100 % justified.
Fore example - he conveniently neglects to tell so many important aspects, as to why Tarja felt like a "guest" in the band, like the times when Tuomas and the guys would contract tours behind Tarja's back, not even notifying her, waiting weeks only so she would find out by random fans on the street "Hey see you next month". One time, they waited with even telling her on the SAME DAY (?!?!). And, they would contract tours for way longer period than the time-span and amounts of shows which they had mutually agreed upon with Tarja and the whole management. No wonder she wanted to leave the band, but at least she had the courtesy to be upfront with her intentions. They could have settled everything quietly and peacefully but chose to disguise themselves and kick her to the curve in the most brutal fashion. So sincerely, do not fall for this attempt by the radical fan-base to build up some image of Tuomas like some saint and martyr who was betrayed by Tarja, when its all the opposite.
