I just wanted to say I appreciate your amazing creativity in all of your videos, very inspiring! I'm growing peppers for the first time this year and I'm very excited, thanks for your unique perspective!
Thanks, Siloe, this is one of your best videos! Wow, such great camera work, combined with the narration, my mouth was watering the whole time. Just fabulous, can't wait to try this again end of summer. (Though I'm not growing paprika.....next year!) Thanks for the shout out, I really appreciate it! suburban homestead
I cannot believe that you only have 40k subscribers. You sir deserve many, many more. I love your videos. They are some of the best on RUclips. Cheers from Central Indiana.
After watching this, I definitely want to grow some Paprika. I love that stone mortar and pestle. Very nice of you to give Kaye's site a shout out, she has a great channel and is very sweet. Once again, awesome video. Take care, Kim
Siloé that was a fantastic demonstration on how to grind Paprika. I loved to see you grinding it the way it should be ground. The Indian music was most appropriate too. I enjoyed that a lot. It was good of you to mention Kaye ,she is a very nice person and gives inspiration to many. Slan Patrick
Awesome video Siloe. I love paprika but have to admit I wasn't exactly sure where it came from or how it was made. Always learning some interesting stuff from your videos. Thanks.
Bryan Wickizer Thanks Bryan, I'm glad you were able to learn something knew. Of course the secret to "designer" paprikas is how they are grow and processed and the varieties used for the recipe.
When i hang my peppers, i use a very thick thread and a big needle. Thread the needle, knot the end of the thread, and poke the needle through the pepper stems one by one. It saves a lot of time
Wow - this was a pleasure to watch. Self-sufficiency is an inspiring concept and your film making is excellent, I will be sure to stick around. I'm glad we came across each others channels.
I love your channel. I'm from CT and hope to have my own suburban homestead also! I love your videos because being on the east coast we have similar climates.
That paprika looks lovely. I'll have a lot of Cheyenne peppers ripening soon. I might make something similar with them - thanks for the inspiration. I already have a years supply of chilli sauce and don't need any more.
Hi Siloe, Paprika is one of my favorite spices. I wanted to see how you produced it. The Columbus silent flick was hilarious with the Spaniards and the Natives frolicking about like innocent children..... I'm SURE that's how it all went down hahahaha Your pepper plants were just gorgeous and I could almost taste the finished product. Thanks for another triumph. JIM
Very colorful video Siloé! I grind my peppers in a coffee mill, works great but when doing hot ones I let it settle a bit before removing the cover, been there, not fun :D
Adoro os teus videos! Fiquei fã! Você me inspira a cada vez mais investir na minha "horta em vasos", que mantenho na varanda do apartamento. A salada do final de semana quase sempre é colhida ali mesmo, na varanda. Delícia!
Appreciate the amazing videos you make. Could you please make some videos about growing passion fruit, growing mulberries, growing, dahlias, compost tea, worm castings, pest management, etc.
Growing my first from seed paprika. We love smoked paprika spice so your video was the information I need. I want to hang dry some for the beauty of the dried peppers, but plan to dehydrate most. 🌶🌶🌶
That was really cool! I can't take hot peppers and never planned on growing them due to pure waste, I love smoke paprika though! … Im excited they can be a part of my garden now too :) Thank you!
My friend I can smell that from here ! Oh my I wish ! This year I hope to save enough peppers to make my own hot pepper flakes for winter use :) Kaye must be having a good day! She sent me a postcard too!
Siloe! I was so happy to see your episode. Is paprika something I should do in a container or a blender all its own? a.k.a - will the blender be forever tainted by the taste of paprika peppers? Thank you, I am so interested in trying this!
***** You know, I'm not sure. I don't find that paprika smell is that persistent. :-) I think that after a few washes it would go away. I guess if done repetedly the essential oils could impregnate the material. The best thing of home-made paprika is that you can invent your own flavor profile by using different varieties and maybe even blending a bit of hot pepper (although grinding hot pepper can be a bit dangerous :-)
I didn't know paprika was a pepper???? I'm surprised I didn't know that. Thanks for the info. Another great video my friend! I look forward to your next.
Wow! And I have fruiting paprika in pots right now. If a green pod has accidentally been knocked down, will it still turn red? Siloe, your processing and culinary hints are very impressive and appreciated.
Thank you. If the pepper was still young it will not turn red before wilting. If it was close to maturing it might. It is always best to leave it to ripen on the plant.
In my country we don't have sun kissed afternoons, we have sun slapped afternoons, sun barbecued afternoons, sun dehydrated afternoons, but no kisses from the sun :)
Binky's Garden That's awesome! The yield depends on many factors: how fertile the soil is, how much sun, how old the plant is. I got about 40 peppers in one plant.
suburban homestead Cool, thanks for t he information. If each plant produces that many peppers, I'll try growing in a container and over-wintering the plant. I only use paprika here-and-there so I'm OK with a smaller yeild. Great video - Thanks again Joe
@@suburbanhomestead Thank you very much. I'm working on getting most of my backyard into garden area this year, and have been doing my homework but there aren't many Marylanders on YT
Beautifully done. In 5 minutes you literally nailed everything I needed to know. I also have a similar cause as you. Thank you so much for the valuable information. What seeds did you use?
the little can of Spanish paprika I buy ! ...Every day i eat one teaspoon of Spanish paprika for my eye health . don't take more than one teaspoon a day it can be toxic to the liver ( too much vitamin A is toxic to the liver ) that's why Canaries birds died when they fed them too much paprika to make the feathers bright and shiny they ended with over load of vitamin A from consuming too much paprika . One tea spoon a day of paprika is so good for your eye health and skin health its keeps the skin very bright .
I'd love to know your favorite use of this paprika. Growing up, neither side of my family used it. Now I love it especially in soups with lots of vegetables, especially anything with cabbage. Stuffed cabbage rolls, wow.
Mmmm! ;) Does grinding the peppers and the full processes of getting the paprika powder cause a tickle in your throat? I know cooking with spicy peppers, can get a tickle started or even coughing. Just wondering as I could see the fine powder take flight. Beautiful video, thank you for sharing. Since I just found you, I'm late to comment and normally wouldn't but I felt your work deserved acknowledgement regardless of when it was seen. ;)
OneYardRevolution | Frugal & Sustainable Organic Gardening Thanks Patrick. Actually, from what I remember it is not so common. (even though it originated from south america) Traditionally in Brazil, "coloral" is used to color and flavor dishes. It comes from the "urucu" plant which is a tropical tree. This is called "annatto" or "achiote" and you can find it listed in some foods as a natural coloring. I believe that paprika is used more in Portugal by the same name "coloral"
Paprika gives a beautiful color to the dish being cooked, without sharp taste of chilli. On my youtube cooking channel. I have shown how to make dry paprika paste and use it in different dishes. Best Regards Homemaking with luma

What a wonderful episode! Is smoked paprika available at stores just the way you toasted it or is there a smoking process with coal? Loved the use of the Indian tabla in the background score! Very appropriate with the spice video😊.
Mumbai Balcony Gardener Traditional smoked paprika is indeed dried over wood fire, however I felt this would be beyond a typical kitchen set-up. Of course toasting it like I did will not produce the exact same flavor, but playing around with technique and paprika varieties should give ample room for flavor experimentation. I love Indian music, and felt it would be nice to blend indian and south-american rhythms since the portuguese spice trade was all about that indian spices, but paprika happened to come from the new world. I'm glad you noticed that :-)
Mumbai Balcony Gardener yea smoked paprika is commonly available in stores there and is used in a lot of Latin cooking . Since it is not as spicy as a cayenne pepper it is more commonly used. suburban homestead as always, a beautifully edited video ! Always inspiring
+FRESH PRINCESS Thanks. I'm honored that you like the video :-) the molcajete is from costco if I remember correctly. It is a granite one, not a volcanic rock one (so it is probably not traditional)
The volcanic ones that we get here are often low quality, even in Mexico I couldn't find the really quality fine textured one. It's looks just rough enough. Cosco ey? I'll have to continue my search.
I was wondering the same thing. I have a dehydrator and we use it all the time. I think Siloé you may want to look into getting one. You could make a lot of your own herbs and spices to save over winter as we do and also dehydrate many of your fruits and vegetables to be added back into soups and stews over the winter months as well. It is kind of like canning but easier.
No. Hungarian paprika made from a Hungarian breed of peppers that are bright red and its never heated up on the stove like in the video. Once you see real Hungarian paprika you will see the difference in colour and taste.

Can't believe I never thought to do this before. Thank you for sharing! I think I may try grinding it up using a blender.
TheASTrader I haven't tried a blender (A molcajete makes it a bit more quaint :-) but if it is absolutey dry I think it may work well.

Ben Jamin There is only so much chili sauce a person can take. :-) And for some reason, hot peppers seem to produce more.
Yes! If only I could grow capsicums like I grow chillies...

Great stuff, Siloé. Going to need to try this. And a special thanks to Patrick of OYR for turning me on to your channel.

How are you coming by fresh peppers to dry in MD in the Winter?
+Edward Alexander They were from a fall harvest dried up during winter.
