I’m now watching “Luther” and let me tell you this man is AMAZING in it!
I fell in love with him on Luther! There is something so compelling about him.
I first saw him in the miniseries Ultraviolet. He's got a scene where his character is like, "I'm dead or worse, no way I can get out of this." How that scene is resolved....AWESOME.
V V He really is extraordinary in that role but that’s a tough show to watch. The depravity of the crimes will keep you up at night. Not a great binge watch show 😅

There isn’t any problem with a black man acting as a spy but it is wrong for an actor with the incorrect physical features to just adopt an iconic role.
Movies like Kingsman show there is room for new spy movies and I would be all for Idris starring in the main role as a character written for him but not for him to just slip into the Bond role.
Elba as Stringer Bell had the best American accent I've ever heard from a Commonwealth actor. Anthony La Paglia is good, too.

Until I noticed very recently from the movie Prometheus like his speaking American..but I distinctly remember in a RUclips video he had a British acc.... WAIT HIS BRITISH?!?!?!?

It sounds like prolific English Voice-Over Artist Enn Reitel. His take on an American accent is quite distinctive. He did a lot of stuff for British TV in the 90's.
As an American, even knowing him being a Brit doing a brilliant American accent made him even more attractive (as if that's even possible.)

I watched The Wire when it first came out and didn't realize Idris Elba wasn't American. I realized he was using a fake accent but I thought it was more that he was trying to fake a mid-Atlantic accent while having another American one(like if I tried to use a midwest accent while having a fairly thick Long Island accent). Whatever the case, my wife and I like just about everything we've seen with him. We're watching the Luther "series" now.
Real talk: If I was auditioning for Stringer Bell and I saw Idris there, I'd start looking for other roles that second.
Funny thing is, the guy who played Carver auditioned for Stringer first.

I can't for the life of me understand why the entertainment industry insists on everyone using an american accent. Most americans love hearing Aussie, British, whatever accents. (side note, please stop with the bad southern accents. I don't think I can take another Trueblood. LOL)

Is not the problem with the accent. The thing is the UK actors are better than the Americans. And if you're going to play a character that is American, it will be strange if he/she have a british accent.
Because many films are placed with American characters and set in America. Thus, they need someone who can properly speak an American accent. And there are plenty of British characters in American film and television shows.
UK actors aren't across the board, any better than Americans. They have many fine actors, and so do we. Streep, Jodie Foster, DeNiro, Pacino, Nicholson, Michael Douglass...the list goes on and on.
