Hey John I found a trick that works for me…. While in 1st gear use the inside of your foot to push the front peg lever in towards the engine. At the same time gently lift on the shifter peg and usually pops right in.
Interesting! 👍👍
Exactly what I was going to say! A technique I have been doing for years! Use the inner part of your foot just a nice gentle push in
Brand new 2023 FLHTK 70 miles on it and finding neutral is a pain! This is my first HD and my 12th motorcycle over 50 years. First time ever having a problem with it.
I dont know why more people dont use this trick works everytime
A lot of times people put a little too much oil in the primary.
The primary fluid should touch the bottom of the clutch plate.
Don’t go by fluid ounces. Just look and make sure it is just barely touching the bottom of the clutch plate.
When there is too much oil in there the clutch is soaked in oil and that is what keeps the plates stuck together and they don’t disengage properly.
Even Doc Harley on RUclips recommends the same.
I also use Amsoil Primary oil which helps with the clutch disengagement and also keeps it a little quieter than the Harley Screaming Eagle oil. 😉👍
I put amsoil primary fluid in my primary and it made finding neutral much easier and quieter shifting. Also Amsoil transmission fluid in trans.
For the 2023 CVO's Harley-Davidson did redesign the shift drum and now supposedly it's a drop into neutral 1st try. I've seen a couple videos on this new design and why it works. Definitely a step in the right direction. I've had 4 Harley-Davidsons in 20 years and everyone of them stock would take forever to find neutral. I'm glad they finally have a fix for it.
i ride a 1986 Honda CB700SC nighthawk, 85,000 miles, hydraulic clutch, shaft driven, never had a shift problem, 1-6 gears, ......lol
I run amsoil in all 3 holes and find that not only does my bike run cooler and quieter, makes finding neutral alot easier than the stock Harley oil and it quiets down the clunking going into 1st gear. Great video my man!! Just my 2 sense!!
Same experience, just had my 1000 mile service and put amsoil in and it is a lot less clunky. Not that I had trouble finding neutral before but it seems easier now.
I’ve had that problem on everyone of my Harley’s. Once I put the Trask shift link on my 21 Road Glide standard I never had that problem again.
I'm going to disagree. When new it wasn't hard to find neutral
after a few thousand miles it was lost. I switched to new shift linkage and a shorty shifter from Thrashin and now it's smooth like butter. What say you? Cheers dude
Not sure, that’s an interesting thought as well, with my mid controls I’ve had zero issues finding neutral and the rest of the linkage is stock
This was actually better advice then the video. Thanks
Thanks dude. I did a video on it. Super easy and made a huge difference. Still smooth after 4k.
My friend had problems finding neutral since DAY 1 on her Fatboy, completely stock! Local HD dealership told her it was her foot and I told them that I could not find neutral either, so is there something wrong with my foot too??????? She still has the same issues finding neutral almost 2 years later now. Completely ridiculous.
I think you're onto something, John... On every stock-ish or new HD, neutral was easy. Even with a heel shifter. I did own a used 99 evo. heritage. That one did not like finding neutral while stopped. While rolling to a stop, it would pop right in. Clutch was probably on the way out.
A little throttle blip while simultaneously lifting from first to neutral. Provided bike is stopped of course. Been doing that since my first Harley in 1073.
since using Amsoil ..can always find neutral now..
Hey I started watching you when I saw you riding through my home town of Bergenfield! Brought back memories. My problems finding neutral on my 09 sportster were solved . The problem was the oversize Kuraken grips preventing the lever from going all the way so I squeeze the lever tight to the grip and problem was solved. Hope this helps somebody. Great channel!
👊👍
There is still an adjustment at the basket on a hydraulic clutch. Just no adjustment between the lever and slave cylinder.
Upgrading your shift linkage can also help with this. The HD stock linkage belongs in the landfill. Also, high-quality synthetic primary lubes are designed to run in performance clutch assemblies without slippage and can help with finding Neutral. The clutch manufacturers say not to use synthetics in the primary for good reason, as many synthetic ENGINE oils do have modifiers added which will cause slippage. Redline V-Twin primary fluid is the one I use. No slips, only smooth, quiet operation.
I would not use the term “perfectly engineered”. Lol. I don’t have a problem getting into neutral. What also helps is getting rid of that floppy shift arm. Get one with Heim joints.
61 years old, 43 years on 8 different Harley's. Only bike that has ever given me a problem was my 2021 Road Glide Special in stock form. Miserable. I readjusted the clutch starting at the throw out rod in the clutch, replaced the pos plastic adjuster on the cable with the threaded metal FBI adjuster. Bike now releases right off the grip and is very smooth just like all of my past bikes. Many dealer techs (not all) nowadays are to inexperienced to know how to do things correctly or they just don't care. Harley went back to cable clutch on the touring models in 2021 not 2022. Was a good move.
Baker Grudgebox when you destroy 3d gear on your M8 goes to neutral like butter and 6th gear is a real overdrive!
Hey John. I think you won't be disappointed with the Metzler Cruise techs. I chose them for my ultra after the much worn out stock Dunlops with a rear flat spot. My understanding is they have a reinforce center amd softer sides for turns. Im very happy I chose the Metzler Cruize Tech tires.
I've got a Cruisetec on the front of my Softail Slim (103) and a ME888 Marathon on the rear (had a Cruisetec on order for months, but it never turned up) and the bike handles sweet, it's smooth to ride and absorbs bumps (eg pavement joints) much better than the horrible Michelin Commander III. Yes, I sound biased, but if you're not riding on Metzeler, you're not really riding.
You are probably on to something when you said about synthetic. In my 17 ultra limited, the Harley shop recommended synthetic in everything when I went in for my 1000 mile service. Shortly after that I started having issues and noisy shifts.
107 with stage 2 torque cam.
Your right, I’ve never had a problem finding neutral either. When the clutch is adjusted properly and for me when I used Amsoil it made getting into neutral even smoother.
Mike is daman just did my 2023 fatboy unbelievable quality of work...totally different bike just as I was promised....completely satisfied customer...
Just hit 40’s this week here in PA by Hershey park… got to FINALLLLLLY wash off the rain road grime!🤮🤙🏼
I use the rekluse clutch , no issues at all
I have the rekluse also, really glad I did that.
I have a 21 Harley ultra with stage 2 build on stock clutch still 33k miles and still going strong and I get neutral all the time but I find that clicking from 1st to N easier than down
I’ve had 3 Harley’s
2 of them used
My road glide got brand new.
None of that 1 2 1 2 1 2 1 N
I did stage 2 on the RG and zero issues with N hunt
Dang, I’ve never heard this before. I guess I’m one of the lucky ones, have never had that unable to find neutral before. But I really dig the explanation around the clutch!
Tap the shifter arm with your shoe to the right and then shift up... I find neutral 95% of the time on the first try. I am running the recommended HD oil in the primary. I also changed out the stock shift rod, which is sloppy and garbage. When I ran Amsoil in the primary on my previous bike, finding neutral was like butter. None of my Japanese cruisers had this problem. Why HD has not fixed this problem after all of these years is mind boggling. And this is exactly why I keep my bikes stock :-)
Never had a problem on my five touring Harleys. My '20 Heritage 114 is another breed - can only find neutral when the bike is off.
Totally disagree. All the stock Harleys I've had ( and we're not allowed to change the engine in Switzerland) all have issues finding neutral. Even without the engine running. The only bike I noticed the neutral was very easy was on the new CVO. They even state in the advertising that neutral is easier to find.
Hi! John: Do you have any idea were I can purchase Willie G's book. Thanks for your help.
Nope! My 2018 Road King with hydraulic clutch fails me when putting it into neutral about 40% of the time. I have upgraded to a stage four from a 107. Still have the issue.
My 21 softail had issues shifting to second from 1. It would shift to neutral all the time. It was worst when it got hot. 100+.
That part is by fat baggers. Clutch adjuster… my plastic piece broke fast… real easy to change out.
That books is so cool. I would like to know more about the trip. Looked like a great time from what you already shown us. Great tip. Not a fan of plastic parts at all.
I had the issue since I bought it brand new. I find it easiest to get into nuetral while bike is rolling to a stop
You don't happen to live in NW Washington State with all your rain? I agree, always smooth shifting on new bikes. I also agree with add on an accessories adding too shifting issues. But I've found the wear on shift levers, linkages slop from lack of adjustment an wear effects shifting smoothly!
Stock is the same thing, get the Thrashin EZ shift lever and the lil adjustable rod.
On my Lowrider ST neutral is easy to find. I took out both Road and Street Glide ST's on demo rides recently both had a few thousand miles on the clock and I eventually gave up trying to find neutral 😐
Only trouble stock finding neutral was the break in oil after first 1000 mile oil change no trouble.
All I know is I test rode a new stock Low Rider ST last week and that thing went into Neutral so easily. My 2023 Sportster S that I added mid controls to, not so much lol. 👍🏾
I've had twelve brand new harley davidson from the showroom floor never had a problem with finding neutral
hi John its always the same problem!! with every hd i had she the bike is cold there its no problem 2 find neutral
if the bike gets warmer its harder 2 find neutral.
It’s a “harley problem” with all my harley it is and was the same u get used 2 it 😂
greetings from germany 🇩🇪
Great video John! I haven't demo'd a new CVO (yet) to feel the clutch-shifting differences. I can tell you I feel a clutch/shift difference between my bike (2016 RG CVO Ultra w/117 kit) and my wife's bike (2020 RG 107).
My XR1200 is easy to find neutral, 2015 Street Glide shifted to neutral just fine. Both had performance upgrades. I recently purchased a 2020 CVO Street Glide and I just keep slipping thru neutral both shifting down or up. I've ridden CVO M8's before when they 1st came out and those were smooth shifting, my current ride is smooth, kinda too smooth...
Ended up purchasing Thrashin Supply inner shift lever, I figured this would be so much easier than drilling the stock steel inner shift lever & yup is so much better!!!
Disagree. 2013 Softail , stock finding N sucks. 2010 not as bad...
Been riding nothing but Harleys for 54yrs, and can't argue with anything you said. In typical Harley fashion, they remove the hydraulic clutch( too many warranty calls) and go back to a cable and put a PLASTIC adjustors......smh.
Also want to add the difference in clutch pull/finding neutral between my 150 hp Harley vs my 150 hp Suzuki is big!
I must say my Harleys, softail and StreetGlide, have never had an issue with the clunk nor finding neutral. Although my riding buddies consistently have it. Could it just be a tolerance issue
“Perfectly Engineered” Seriously John? I own a 2018 SGS and I love it but - slumping issues due to crap oil pump…. Oil transfer issues - had to add a vent kit.. Harley will tell you that it only happens to a few bikes but the fact is- it happens to anyone who actually rides their bike on longer rides or higher RPM’s. Not to mention the cheap parts like the shifter linkage that is guaranteed to break..
My C V O Road Glide has stage 2 kit stock clutch n it sucks getting into Neutral… since new.put your foot toward the primary n little throttle n it’s better…
Suzuki Hayabusa was my cure
Thanks for the insight. I'll be doing Dark Horse comp and Aims clutch pack with my stage 2.
Of course we want a video of the trip John. I saw other RUclipsrs posted videos but we want your perspective.
I don’t think any one else posted any videos except for me. I already posted three. I meant I could kind of talk about the trip and why we were there, where we rode and stayed and how the overall trip was
@@CYCLEFANATIX yeah I did see something from Queen Sit, not sure if it was on here or FB.
GREAT INFO ! much appreciated !
Bel ray gear saver transmission oil it makes a difference
Agree with pretty much everything you said.
I just shut the bike off if it’s being finicky 🤷♂️ Neutral like butter.
Then your adjustment is wrong. If you have to turn the bike off you are not getting enough throw out and you have a small amount of drag.
Good video and yes I still hate rain 🌧️
@cyclefanatix unrelated but where are your hand guards from?
Sorry, I disagree. I've started riding on a Z250, moved to a Z750 then to a Z1300. Never ever had a problem finding neutral. In fact, the later 2 bikes mentioned had an auto find neutral that when you stopped in 1st gear, clicking up would lock-in neutral. This is a feature no HD I've ridden has - and I've test ridden lots of them. I bought a brand new 1996 Road King, a 1997 Sportster 883, a 2004 Sportster 1200, now have a 2018 M8 Low Rider and a 2021 Pan America - and I tell you finding neutral on all these HDs, especially when the motor gets really hot in stop/start traffic, is sometimes a pain in the you know what. It's not until the motor/gear box is well run in, say around 18-20K+ kilometers on the clock that located neutral is consistently no problem.
Have a FXSTC 96 cu in only have trouble finding neutral when the oil temperature goes over 260 deg f like being stuck
in traffic.
disagree, have a stock off the floor 2022 street glide special, nothing but problems finding neutral
John, try the Thrashin Supply Shift arm and shift linkage, makes a difference on my side
I had trouble finding neutral on the harley demo day rides. Stock bike.
Oops 1973!
Squeeze the clutch a little harder. Works for me getting into neutral.
Dude I got a nasty flu now. Been going since Sat.
Hope u feel better bro
Shit hasn’t kept me off my bike tho 😈
I agree never had problem
My 22 RG LIMITED in Stock form was a PIA to get into neutral from day 1, HD says nothing wrong.
I just use a quick down hit with my heal.
Hey what brake pads do you currently have in your calipers ? Love your channel !!!!!
What if you have a problem with finding neutral too easily? I'll go to shift into second and I think I apply enough force, but instead it goes into neutral.
I DONT HAVE A PROBLEM FINDING NEUTRAL ON MY 17 ROAD GLIDE S WITH 105K MILES!
👍💯
Nice video keep up the good work Cycle Fanatix
I never had a problem finding neutral.
Thanks for the intel
Once in a while it's an issue but we live with it right!! LOL Peace brother!
Great information thanks, what size windshield is that?
From your trip can you do a review on the low rider st
Not everyone can find the Harley neutral G spot PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE
I disagree.
OK tell me what your thoughts are on the matter 👍
I run all synthetic in my 2022 fatboy, wood ex cam with se oil pump and cam plate. I couldn't get my bike in neutral to save my ass, I changed the shift rod to kuryakyn, bolted the front to the inside of front shift lever and now it's fine.
Dude I just bought a new Heritage and had ti have them adjust the cluch. Sooo your wrong just sayin
Well if they adjusted the clutch, it wasn't operating properly. Just sayin.
@@Country-Marshal was the 1k service he told me they adjust them sll.
@@JamanRooney naturally, any new clutch has to wear in and seat.
Probably. Fat bagger part for clutch
Disagree. I had both the salesman and the service writer who couldn’t find neutral at the Harley stealership
Disagree..having issues finding neutral on 2018 rgs..stage 1.
51 years old, get your white shoes on and move to Florida and ride the heat all year Pops.
I disagree
Is the Harley ceo an American citizen?
Probably not!
@louhmx1136 Not sure if a U.S. citizen per Wiki. Harley Davidson CEO Jochen Zeitz is German. Came from Puma, yeah, sneaker company. Won’t say any more.
