If RTV has been used in the past, I recommend tapping in a putty knife under the diff cover instead of prying with a flat head screw driver to avoid damaging the cover flange. Tap in the putty knife at the right side, left side and bottom while keeping the top cover bolt threaded but loose.
If you're lucky, you'll have 2 metallic tags on your rear axle that tells you what type of fluid to use as well as details as to what the OEM gear ratio is and the gear size (i.e. 8.8). Turns out that my 02 Mustang has both tags attached. It'll be a good idea to reattach those tags when you reattach or replace the cover. I suppose some mechanics don't bother reattaching the tags. I noticed the tags were missing in this video.
That is some really good advice because I cannot get mine out but it had to be done because I had to change the axle bearings now I’m trying to figure out how to fill the differential
The manual says add till it comes out i added the fric mod and both bottles off diff oil it didnt come out should i add more till it comes out like the manual states or just hope that the 2 bottles of royal purple and small bottle of modifier are enough??!!🤔
David, The 2 quarts of the diff fluid and the one 4oz bottle of the friction modifier is the factor spec on all 8.8" rear end assemblies. You do not want to overfill these diff's or you can cause cavitation of the fluid and this can cause issues down the road.
I do mine about every 3 years, mines a daily driver for the most part but i dont drive it that many miles,i believe the maintenance schedule says every 60 thousand miles ( your car has a 8.8 which is the same as a Fox)) dont forget the little bottle of friction modifier, your Ford dealer should have it, not very expensive plus the 2 bottles of fluid.
When you spray everything down like that with brake clean, how long should you let it dry to ensure it’s evaporated enough? I assume even small amounts of brake clean left when you seal/fill it would be terrible for your gear oil.
As you can see in the video, this car had some pretty dirty gear oil. Depending on the overall condition of your rear end components, flushing it with brake clean may not be necessary. If you do flush it, the brake clean will be evaporated by the time you move to the next step. -Landan
Question do I need any sealant on the gasket you provide? Also the royal purple has the friction modifier . Allot of confusion on why you sell it with kit if royal purple comes with it already in it.
Hey Tim. No, you do not need to use any sealant when installing one of the Lubelocker gaskets. The friction modifier is not necessary but adding it is optional. We offer it with the kit to help with additional friction in the gears.
@@latemodelrestoration I called your tech support because I bought the kit from you guys (lube locker gasket, royal purple gear oil and the friction modifier)...tech support said dont use it. Also called royal purple and they said dont use it as its already in their gear oil and adding too much could cause slippage.
Ford still recommends this in all clutch-type limited-slip differentials, this is why we include these in the kits. Can you please reach out to us through the contact us link and if you need any help please let us know. lmr.com/contact
@@timsimons8946 do not rely on fluids that "already contain friction modifier". They add so little that it'll still destroy your limited slip. Always run 4oz of modifier in every fill up on these rear ends. If you're taking it to track only then you can rely on the built in package bc it will make your rear end lock up hard and fast for launches. But if your car ever sees a normal road at all, I'd never just run gear oil with no additive. (Not to mention track cars rebuild their rear ends all the time from constant launches, do you replace your rear end multiple times a year? Or want to? No? Then add the damn 4 dollar additive)

I'm confused. My owners manual states that the rear axle fluid isn't to be changed or checked unless the axle has been immersed in water. Or when service is required - what does that mean?
If your axle has been submerged in water, it is a good idea to change the fluid because there is a chance that water may have gotten inside. It is always a good idea to check and change the fluid if that has happened so you don't risk damaging anything.

Have you "laid" under a car to change the diff fluid? Lifting your car above you with a lift makes the job soooo much easier and hence, a bit quicker. Not to mention keeping your diff case level, that helps fluid drainage.
Water will not "break up" the old oil and crud that will surely be in your diff, eapecially if its been many years, if you can even recall, since the last diff fluid change. Spray good with brake cleaner and wipe case out as best you can.
