  • How to check your brakes in a Volvo 122S Amazon. We pull them apart for a rebuild in at Centric in California.

    Thanks for your videos, I’m a rookie try to revive a beast that hasn’t run in years- learning a lot. I ultimately had to replace the master and both calipers. The problem I’m having is that the brakes are staying clamped after taking my foot off. I have to open the bleeder to turn the wheel again. Once I press the brakes, they stay on. Any ideas? I have touched the vacuum system yet but don’t think that would cause problems while it’s not running.

      M Gutz I've heard that a brake hose can sometimes collapse inside the hose, in turn causing this brake problem... Try changing the supply hose to the caliper since you've already replaced the caliper, then bleed the brakes and see if that helps...

      sj122s thanks. It was actually the booster manifold. I really needed to just replace the whole vacuum booster system but instead I just got a nice stainless brake hose made to fit and bypassed the whole system. Brakes work fine, you just need to do your squats to maintain the strength required to stop😲. Eventually I’ll get to the booster, just seems hard to find and not cheap. She’s mostly a garage queen now.

      @@TheGutz430 I had the same problem with my 122... I pulled the Booster and did just as you, and it has worked fine for over 13 years... Funny how appreciated automobiles become garage queens... I'm guilty of that also...

    Where do you get these calipers rebuilt? I rarely find anyone willing to touch old Volvo parts.

      I found goldline brakes in Washington that did a good job on the racecar,.

    You might be interested to know that a large part of the reason that motor companies switched from multi-piston fixed calipers like the Volvos had right through into the '90s to, often single-piston sliding calipers (or allegedly sliding calipers, most mechanics and hobbyists will have a whole litany of stories of makes and models of car and truck where the sliding calipers stop sliding and seize up rather quickly) was because of issues of space and clearance on front wheel drive cars. The front suspension and steering geometry has to be different on front wheel drive cars to avoid tyre scrub and putting excessive strain on the drive shafts/axles/half-shafts (different parts of the world use different terms for the same part, in the UK we call them drive shafts but in the US that is the term you use for what we call the prop, or propellor shaft from the back of the gearbox to the differential on rear- or four-wheel drive vehicles) and their joints. This geometry change means that the steering axis that the front wheel rotate around when steering is much closer to, and in some cases actually inside the inner rim of the road wheel on a front-wheel drive car and there is much less offset of the wheel rim to the wheel hub, i.e. on a rear-wheel drive car the wheel centre will be inside the wheel outer edge, whereas on a front-wheel drive car the wheel centre is often flush with the outer edge or on something that takes narrow tyres it could actually be outside the outer edge. As a multi-piston caliper fixed caliper is a lot wider than a sliding caliper to be able to use fixed calipers the hub assembly would have to be much deeper and the portion of the drive shaft outside of the joint would have to be longer which because of the rotational forces involved would risk problems with the assembly running out of true causing vibration problems, excessive wheel bearing wear due to the extra forces applied to it and high unsprung weight which adversely affects ride quality and suspension behaviour as well as road noise. Also the road wheels and tyres would need to be wider which would make the steering heavier and reduce the life of steering components. The fact that sliding calipers are cheaper to make than fixed multi-piston calipers doesn't hurt either. Of course it is perfectly possible to make low weight, narrow fixed multi-piston calipers, they are used on front-wheel drive competition vehicles but they are many, many times the cost of the standard sliding calipers and because of the materials they are made out of they can't be produced in high volume to suit motor production. Do I think sliding calipers are a good idea, NO they are a disaster in engineering terms and a constant source of problems and frustration for mechanics once the car gets past a few years old. But then I don't think front-wheel drive is a particularly great idea in engineering terms either but that doesn't stop the vast majority of light vehicles built nowadays from being front-wheel drive...

      David Bello Thanks for getting back to me! I love what you do here, man. I watched Arthur grow up. I am in the beginning stages of a 1978 242 V8 conversion... There's the purist part of me that says, NO! But the hot rod side of me says 'Yes!" So, anyways, all that to say, I appreciate your model of cinematography, and will be documenting my progress!
      Also, I am Lacking in a OE 242 grill... the original was broken in an accident. Any older style flat hood grills in your Volvo boneyards? Thanks

      Don't think twice about a v8. You'll love it everyday. Check out jagsthatrun.com if you haven't already. Flathood grilles are a hot commodity. My first volvo ever was a 78 242 as well. I doubt one will show up cheap, but junkyards are always unpredictable. You could get creative and make a simple yet beautiful grille since it's just tabs :)
