Bought one used in 2016, upgraded to ssd a couple years back, and recently ram, I use it as a scan tool in vehicles, love that it’s so solid , especially the lid, can’t flex it. I tripped over the usb cord, sending it 4 ft to the shop concrete floor, it didn’t sustain any damage, like you said, not a great screen, but for what I need it to do, it’s great
These are awesome for the price. I put an i7 something number qm in my 6430 and it made a huge difference. Quad core, at least 8 gigs of ram, SSD, and these older dells still rock ten years later. I would say they're relevant for another five years if you don't expect the world from them. It's incredible the computing power and quality you can get for around $40 today.

Yeah, they do overheat. Make sure the processor isn't too much for the laptop, they pack a bit too much power for these things. Make sure your thermal paste hasn't dried up before you start using it for anything intensive. I upgraded my RAM to 16gb, replaced my thermal paste, and I'm working on my CPU now. These computers really pack power and I suggest installing Linux for the best performance.

My second Dell e6430 is i5 and runs on Lubuntu as my juke box. The wife just took it over for spread sheet work as her old Lenovo is a slug and can't be upgraded. Pretty snappy on the Lubuntu OS.
@@fnscxlt198 a general answer would be "no". sure, with a ssd and some more ram, then it'd be able to handle some basic games like csgo, dota2 or lol. but to be frank, if your purpose of purchasing a laptop is gaming, then i'd suggest saving up some more cash and getting an actual dedicated gaming laptop instead.
I just upgraded my Dell e6430 17 dual core to 1TB SSD and 16GB of ram. The SSD took Win 10 start from 2:30 to 0:35 secs. The expanded memory allows me to run Premiere which uses almost 8GB when scrubbing the timeline. Spent just under $90 for the upgrade, which put new life into this classic machine.
As I said on your previous - this is 1600x900 typically. Mine is from 2011 as well. The latch broke but dedicated graphics (not good) and I'm making this comment whilst running many tabs on chrome with 1080p and browsing FB no issues. i5 2520m
Write all my music on mine. Have done for a while. Got the i5 with integrated video. Got an SSD in there, a second HDD in the DVD caddy. Also got a second battery (the original wasn't great) and a backlit keyboard. Running Linux - works great.

In terms of internet I disagree with what you said Mine is so good and fast enough with internet services unless you have a poor connection I still use it in 2024 Besides is not a performance laptop it falls under business category so it’s decent for everyday job and super solid that’s what surprises considering the age

i got a latitude e6320 with 8gb of ram. i have a question. dell says that 8gb ram is the max for the latitude e6320 but ive seen ones on ebay with 16gb of ram (and videos of ram upgrades to 16gb and it working perfectly) so is it worth it to try 16gb of ram? the 8gb runs out pretty quick cause i do gaming and other stuff at the same time. but otherwise its a good laptop i once dropped mine down a long path of stairs and nothing happened only the cd drive opened and now randomly kept opening so i took it out cuz i wasnt using it anyway.
I got this laptop at a thrift store for $30. It got me through my last two years of school. It still works. I use it as my lightweight laptop. I like it with an SSD. Mine has 4GB of Ram. Only issue i have is openGL support on the intel graphics 3000.
Btw if you’re still rocking this thing today, it is possible to upgrade the motherboard to have a nvidia graphics chip, this takes you from OpenGL 3.1 all the way up to OpenGL 4.6

@@topazbear2 unfortunately the only other solution I've come up with is to make an entire eGPU setup through the expresscard, but that quickly goes into the hundreds of dollars and you might as well invest in a new computer. Other than that, there's little you can do, unfortunately. Remember that this is a business-oriented laptop, intel hd 3000 was designed with monitors/productivity etc (not games) in mind.
@@Andy.Bennett Yeah figured not much you can do there as far as modern titles go, its good for retro gaming but it errors out on anything better than opengl 1, even though it can do 3 on Windows 10 due to driver flaws
I have the XFR (rugged) version of that unit and it performs just fine with an i7-2840QM. In fact the XFR is even worse thermally given that it's hermetically sealed but nonetheless no issues. Mine has 16G RAM, SSD, and still runs like a champ.

I have one and I got it running games like beamng drive at 30 fps, minecraft at 100+ fps, mudrunner at 20-30 fps, dirt 4 at 20 fps, just cause 2 at 40-50 fps, my summer car 30 fps, assetto corsa at 30 fps. And it is factory with the intel I7. And in my opinion thats pretty good for what it is.
I bought a DELL E6320 3 years ago, it is still working perfectly fine, the keyboard is awesome. The display and resolution is a little bit on the lower end. Perfect for working and traveling !
i have a different model i have the Latitude E6440 which is not too far from that model and it is possible to change the Display which i did and i am having a 1920 x 1080 currently i also have the same usb 3.0 added plus 16gb of ram , the only thing that has given me a harder time to get working on my current OS is the Finger Print reader since it does work on Windows 10 but not on the Linux Distribution that i am using. I also saw online that you could get a more powerfull processor online but i decieded just to keep the old I7 dual core and if it ever fail i will go for it.

I need to open mines back up and reapply some good thermal compound to the heat pipe attachment. Not a one secondary OEM makes a double pipe.. all single. So.. it runs kinda hot. I use a MacBook Air now but I’ll never sell or get rid of my E6420. If I fixed the thermals it’s still 100% usable for current stuff. The screen and speakers are the two things that I motivate me to get it running again. I could care less about bezels and that kinda thing.. the quality other LCD was awful, even by 2011 standards. The speakers made more sense.. Latitude is their business-class line of notebooks and employers don’t give a shot of you can watch movies in surround sound on a laptop your supposed to be working on. I always tell people this is the machine that inspired the Dell XPS 13. I have no proof of that.. I just lived through the evolution and that’s what I saw happen. The build quality on the e6420 was kinda unreal for a windows oem in 2011. The first week I had it I must have run it through every hardcore setting I could think up and it crushed. Still today, 12 years later, it has more processing power then some cheap sub-$400 laptops. By the way, the chassis is Magnesium and milled, it was kinda this things claim to fame.. using the entire chassis as a heat-sink. In practice, it didn’t help thermals (positively lol) but it made a solid build that looked and felt fantastic. Edit: sorry, you are not gaming on this beyond solitaire. Even in 2011 it woulda sucked for that. Awful display and speakers and also the weakest GPU available at the time. It was mode for productivity not media consumption. If you write a lot, like for school or you write books.. you’d adore this machine. World class typing experience for damn sure.
Rat Shit yes it’s was my old school computer it was so power full I was running cs.go at 150 FPS and Minecraft at 200 and robloxs 300 I would have done a lot more but I was a little kid I was just playing around but this is a beast even in 2020 still the same fps

Actually e6420 is fast for normal tasks. Mine has i5 + 8gb ram + nvs 4200 + sreen 1600 x 900 + ssd 512 gb and i see no diference in speed whis mine pc (xeon 8 cores + 16 gb ram + ssd). Only modern games and heavy tasks are not for this laptop.
@AGHA ROSHAAAN KHAN 1 year ago i installed windows 10 on my e6420 (clean install). Everything works fine, as on windows 7. Download Dell SupportAssist to update all drivers and latest version of BIOS.
@AGHA ROSHAAAN KHAN You can run win 10 on BIOS A17. Max ram is 16gb or 32gb, but you can put in + 4gb and get 8gb total, it is fine for this laptop. If you need more perfomance you can upgrade CPU to core i7 (4 cores 8 threads).

I just ordered one, based on my experience with my E6410. However, I I am able to play a number of light games on this system now, and I expect to do the same or a little better with the E6420. My main concern right now is the bus speed. Hope its a little better

As another user pointed out below, it does look like they support the higher power quad core i7 chips and not just the dual core ones, so an additional upgrade may be in order for this system.

I’m running Win10 64bit and cannot get bluetooth going. The ‘bluetooth module’ in device manager has ‘cannot be started’ error. Has anyone else solved this problem?

The E6430 is a generation newer. Same basic design, but a generation newer processor. You could expect slightly higher performance from the E6430 depending on how it is configured.

mine is working fine ssd 5g card new LG panel still 720, issues with audio driver on w10
Actually e6420 is fast for normal tasks. Mine has i5 + 8gb ram + nvs 4200 + sreen 1600 x 900 + ssd 512 gb and i see no diference in speed whis mine pc (xeon 8 cores + 16 gb ram + ssd). Only modern games and heavy tasks are not for this laptop.

@AGHA ROSHAAAN KHAN 1 year ago i installed windows 10 on my e6420 (clean install). Everything works fine, as on windows 7. Download Dell SupportAssist to update all drivers and latest version of BIOS.

@AGHA ROSHAAAN KHAN You can run win 10 on BIOS A17. Max ram is 16gb or 32gb, but you can put in + 4gb and get 8gb total, it is fine for this laptop. If you need more perfomance you can upgrade CPU to core i7 (4 cores 8 threads).

It appears that the boards are different enough to that they will most likely not fit.
I just ordered one, based on my experience with my E6410. However, I I am able to play a number of light games on this system now, and I expect to do the same or a little better with the E6420. My main concern right now is the bus speed. Hope its a little better

As another user pointed out below, it does look like they support the higher power quad core i7 chips and not just the dual core ones, so an additional upgrade may be in order for this system.

I’m running Win10 64bit and cannot get bluetooth going. The ‘bluetooth module’ in device manager has ‘cannot be started’ error. Has anyone else solved this problem?

@@lindomagagula2807 it's a beast of it's time, u can check if u want. Any ultra mega Open world games like saints row, gta will work, but with low fps, maybe 15-30 fps, rest all works beautifully.

The E6430 is a generation newer. Same basic design, but a generation newer processor. You could expect slightly higher performance from the E6430 depending on how it is configured.

i have this laptop go to dell and use its driver update service worked well i7 8gb 1tb hdd win10 activated and yes it can take a qg and yes it can take 16gb of ram add a external gpu and it is truly shocking but thats just my view,,
I have same but i5 2.90 GHz 500 ssd hybrid and 10 gb of ram . it's pretty fast but the only problem is the screen resolution which 1366 x 768 which makes the color not good for eye comfort.

They make a 1600 x 900 display for these, I'm pretty sure its compatible with the 1366 x 768 version.
