"You need to find Bali for yourself" Genuinely, gives me goosebumps.
Many foreign tourists usually don't venture to the Bali's remote areas, and most do not feel comfortable eating local Balinese food. That is why some areas are packed with western restaurants and hotels.
If you want to experience the real Bali, go to the villages far from where the tourists gather, meet the "real" locals and eat local food. But, there's a chance you may end up with upset stomach at the end of the day (part of the experience).

As always, I love your honest review of places! My sister and I were actually planning on going to Bali earlier this year because of how beautiful it looked, but after doing a LOT of research for the trip, I figured out about the overcrowding and tourism. You put together a great video while staying honest about the experience. Thanks!
There are still some nice spots in Bali, but I recommend spending more time on the other islands (Lombok is amazing)

WELL DONE!! I have always wanted to visit Bali since I was a kid (from surfing), but definitely would want the 'off-the-beaten-path' experience--even if that means skipping Bali and focusing on the other islands. Love the honest review...our world needs more of this kind of honesty right now! ...Damn, we are SO itching to go on an international adventure!

Was in Bali in November and this rings so true, excellently documented. Indonesia and the people are amazing, Lombok is a wonderful place, albeit still rebuilding after the earthquake
Totally agree about Lombok and the people. It was very interesting and sad to see that many areas of Lombok were struggling after the earthquake... it seems that many tourists were avoiding it. Must be even worse right now

good opening question. Really Made me think a lot about my own reasons to travel. I have heard a lot about Bali myself and most people say its paradise. Wow really didn't knew that Bali was so overrun with tourists. Its really a shame. really love the quote you used "traveling with a template" and having the same picture as everyone else. Really curious how social media has influenced this place?

I visited some of the spots that appeared in your video before. I have two Bali visors, too. You put the video together very nicely. Your narrations are poetic. Is that Aling Aling Waterfall at the end?
Bali used to be so different.... It was really a paradise when we lived there until we moved in 2001.... We were back again to visit twice since then, the last time was in 2018 and so sad and disappointed seeing Bali change so much (not for the better).. people ruin that beautiful island...traffic jam, over commercialist, over populated ... we felt the island lost their identity.

Although I'm in love with Bali, yet everything you said is true. I traveled across bali from Nusa Dua up until Singaraja and I like the diversity of this huge island. Anyone stay only around Kuta, Seminyak, and Sanur will definitely feel what you felt unless they're visiting for a few nights and looking for a busy lifestyle.
It's all about your opening words "why do you travel".. I guess Bali will easily fulfill all kinda answers, it's about how you find the answer.

This is so spot on. I fell in love with Bali on my first trip when it was relatively unscathed. I have been to Bali a few times and have watched it transform. I was terribly disappointed on my last trip and this video captures the very essence of what it has become. If I wanted to eat at a high end cafe with a bunch of loud mouthed Aussies I can go down the street where I live in Melbourne. I am fortunate to know a local who can take me to places where the tourists don’t venture. Unfortunately, it became a victim of its own success. I feel sorry for the Balinese because for them it is a large part of their livelihood and so many are dependent on the income. Then there’s the many Javanese who come from the mainland to make a buck and give the place a bad name.
Totally agree with you! It’s a tricky situation for the locals as you say. Tourism makes up about 80% of the economy... I just hope it can become more sustainable post pandemic
I completely agree with you... I was truly shocked by all the litter among some beaches, the mass of people is certain areas, etc., ... so disappointing. I left Bali thinking how beautiful it was, and I would love to go back someday but only after tourism is under control.
I hope they can find a middle crowd, but I think too much of the economy depends on tourism now
100% agree! I first wanted to go to Bali many years ago, but only got round to going in 2018 for my honeymoon. We both felt the exact way your video describes it and were disappointed by Bali. I read an article not long after going there, about how travel photography has changed into getting the bests shots for Instagram and ignoring any culture whilst travelling. I felt like this was very prominent in Bali. I like to enjoy the culture and food of a country and this can be quite challenging when people keep offering you pizzas and burgers - something I can cook in my kitchen in England!
When i talk about my honeymoon I always sound a bit down about it, which is a shame - next time I end up talking about my honeymoon, I will probably just tell them to watch this video as it perfectly sums it up! Look forward to seeing some off the beaten track places there and hopefully it will change my mind.

Lucky Me, Kept A Home There From 79 to 85. Both Nusa Dua & ALL Of The Bukit Were Empty, Open Country, Ubud Was A Long Way From Anywhere, Kuta Beach Ended At Legian & The Beach Was The Main Road. Salamat Jala & Aloha

As cyclists my group and I found nice rivers and waterfalls, as did other cycling groups... But of course after hearing and seeing our pictures, other folks now crowd those once natural beautiful areas, with the crowdiness and leaving garbage 😢
My suggestion for your next destination visiting Indonesia is the Komodo Island National park...👌👌

I've never been to Bali. It looks gorgeous. I'd love to explore the temples and spiritual side of it.
The spiritual side is very interesting and unique, but I recommend skipping the most popular temples!

A couple of years ago Bali was high on my list, but it isn't anymore. Exactly for the reasons you mention. It just really doesn't seem enjoyable to go to a place overtaken by westerners and western influences. What's the point?

Totally agree. Trash is a problem and Bali is overrun with tourist just as other SE Asian tourist destinations are (Hoi An in Vietnam and Boracay in the Philippines are just two that come to mind. But there are many). You have to get away from tourist areas. However, a lot of people are not comfortable doing that or they don't have the time (which is fine with me). I hope it stays that way.

I was crushed when I went to Bali, it's such a beautiful place with amazing people but it was way too over crowded for me. Tourism has ruined Bali 😥
Bali where you go if you want to meet Aussies and Chinese. Really though if you just go north into sulewesi you can find beautiful beaches in Bau bau and bira. Hell even just go next door to lombok but that's starting to catch on. Indnesia definitely a country worth exploring, private boat in raja ampat still one of my highlights in all my world adventures. Bali can be nice first experience but don't keep going back. there is lots to explore in indonesia.

One reason that i dont want the best palces of the Philippines be broadcasted all over the world. I want our beaches to be as it is.. Less tourist, so that every single one can enjoy the majestic view of every place. I really wish that someday, I will not see any video on youtube saying that Palawan is trashy and notnas good as what they saw on social media.

Its a shame really, as an Australian i've never been, but i see some of it in Thailand, like in Koh Samui.
I first started watching your channel from your Koh Chang video, and it seems in the 3-4 years since i've been its getting more tourist focused.
its inevitable really, these places rely on tourism way too much, parts of Australia feels it as well (Gold Coast, Bondi and sadly the The Great Barrier reef)
Thats fine though, the greater challenge of finding the quieter places just makes it that more rewarding :D

I been to bangkok 5 times. I always have the choice to go to bali but i choose thailand each time . I feel like its just a instagram place .

first Bali becomes wealthy island , one of the most profitable place for bussiness and investation
but as long as it comes , more balinese people suffering
many Balinese people have wages (with minimum wages is 170 USD/month) usually they paid below that .Onthat terms, many of my friends sell his ancestors lands for "western consumeristic glamours behaviour" that in fact they dont need . getting rich for a while
and getting poor again because of that cycle
so , you said on video that"Overtourism " things.... Sadly it was real , and many tourist realized that
in Backlash of that , Hundreds of Hotel dropped the Occupancy rate and firingtheir staff constantly ,
( it was happened before pandemic- its worse now)

I am balinese & im agree, bali starting to lose its unique slowly here because overtourism and others factors. the real bali is still here and try survive , dont follow usual travel guide/ads or popular travel site on bali etc about bali. just explore it your self with locals thats u know & trust .

Boracay, Philippines had the same problem till the president closed it down for months to clean it up and impose new rules, now it's better than ever.

Yeah, Bali is untidy, only good in the photos. Inner Bali is lovely and relaxing, but the areas near the water are overrated. Lombok and Flores islands are way better than Bali.

Bali for me an Indonesian .... is not even worth enjoyable, there is so many hidden area in around Indonesia ; but in my position is in Central Java ... there is some hidden gem ... that there is or almost no foreign tourist but very famous local like me. Sadly you only focus in Bali .... others in Java there is so much more offer ... than Bali ...

As a traveller i can say that Bali got fucked up the most....and the fastest...all the balinese addicted to money...double the amount of javanese entered....traffic jams,..poluttion....etc...that is what tourism does.

I find very hypocrite, especially living in Paris where we have the same problems to complain about overtourism... and happily take their money ! Sorry, but no, when I was a student, I not always wanted to go outside the touristic areas, what's wrong with that? But guess what? It's okay to take my touristic money but not okay to only see touristic places, eh? And what about doing like my city (Paris, France), strickly regulating it? I find very rude to complain about overtourism, because it keeps out poor people from traveling abroad, hence discovering the world and broadening our mentality. And I don't speak about the money the overtourism is giving to my city of lights nor any other touristic place all around the world.
In one word, you want for instance the Eiffel tower without anyone else? Not only egoistic, but very arrogant ! On what grounds do you think that, as a tourist, YOU are better than your neighbor tourist? That's the job of the local authorities to restrain the number of tourists if the inhabitants are complaining. And now that we have 14 months of COVID, people start to beg us (the tourists) to come back? Like the Spanish Minister did to the Bristishes two weeks ago? No way, I'll spend my money, since some people don't want it, somewhere else where I can enjoy a cocktail without being judged because I enjoy a cocktail in a touristic bar of Bali... Not everyone wants to see the so-called "real" Bali.
You've completely misunderstood the entire point of the video. I have no problem with touristic places. The Bali problem is an issue of expectation vs reality. The original reason why people came to Bali is to find secluded beauty and nature. But that beauty is literally being bulldozed to make room for more bars and hotels.
