Obviously this was all filmed BEFORE the world went into lockdown, so things will look a bit different in Bali right now. When we can all travel again, here’s a discount code to get you £35 off your first Airbnb (It works worldwide too): abnb.me/e/aG0PWA9zGI
I just left there (currently in Jakarta) and it's not too much different. Covid seems to not exist there, even the bars and evening venues are open and busy. In fact, I liked it a bit better this time than prior years because it was less crowded. and my Airbnb cost 33% of the rate (still $900).
6:44 - now that you've been there, you know it's not cheap, but it has a cheap reputation. Here's why: many tourists who go to Bali would not go anywhere a little more "dangerous" and cheaper. They go to Bali because it's known to be safe. These people are typically living is expensive big cities like Sydney, New York, Europe. So they're comparing Sydney to Bali. Yes, Bali is cheaper in terms of that. But for the area, it's really expensive. I paid $150 for a monthly gym pass. Housing is particularly expensive at 2x the cost of most places ($2K+ for a decent private 1-bedroom).
this is another terrific depiction of what parts of bali have become. have a read of “snowing in bali” to get a sense of what canggu was like in the 70s when it was first discovered as a surfing playground.
This is why I hated how wrong for people who go to Bali to eat Smoothie Bowls, Drink a Cuppucino/Latte etc. No!! You don't go to Indonesia to eat/drink that. Was living in Canggu for 6 months last year. Totally agree that it is absolutely filled with people who care way to much about how they are perceived on instagram posting smoothie bowls etc lmao. Ah well. I was hoping to visit somewhere like Canggu in South East Asia again once covid is over. Do you know any places that are still a bit "westernised", laidback/chill, surfer/skater vibes but not filled with the influencers etc?
Yes for sure! Chiang Mai in Thailand is my personal favourite place for living long term. We stayed in an area called Suthep right on the edge of the city, which a laid back student area with lots of nature around. It's mainly young Thai people in that area, but you have Nimmen only 10 minutes away which is the westernised Digital Nomad area. I also really recommend Da Nang in Vietnam. There's an area called My An, which is right on the amazing beach and there are plenty of great cafes and restaurants. There are videos of both places on my channel if you're interested.
@@herbetplum I'd also suggest Siargao in the Philippines if you like the laid back surfer vibe. The town called General Luna has a good vibe, Only issue there is internet speeds...
Google Sumatera surfing spots. There are many quiet villages that have good beaches with almost no foreignera in Indonesian's Sumatera region, except the popular Mentawai Island. But just a head up, there will be no cafe or bars like in Canggu. And Aceh city even forbid beer.
i visited bali in 2009/2010, and yes it is a beautiful and pretty place. But when I visited again in 2019 it was quite surprising, the traffic jams and lots of rice fields, which in my opinion have become iconic of Bali, have disappeared a lot, replaced by buildings, it's quite regrettable.
Great video (as usual). You’re one of the smarter vloggers out there with the choices you make when filming. Your videos are a pleasure to watch. Thank you. (And you’ve put me off moving to Canggu lol).
I love Bali. I've seen it transition to this over over crowded, expensive tourist trap. 5 years ago Canggu was lovely to visit. It was relaxing, alot of rice fields, alot of space and minimum traffic. Western culture is ruining this beautiful area along with the rest of the Island. The original Canngu was amazing and I'm glad I got to enjoy it before all the changes.
Thats what happens when a place gets popular. You went, you're western, others do too. Natural progression. And come off it with the rice fields, who gives a shit about rice fields, they are not good to look at, and they are weak earners. Go visit a farm.
I hate it when tourists say things like this. You are part of the 'problem' you're talking about. So dont think you are the special one just because you went there earlier
Thanks for the feedback. Base on the vlogs, the roads in Bali haven't been widened and improved over the years. For those who haven't seen padi fields and coconut trees, its good to see and move on. For me I would prefer to chill in Nusa Dua, to enjoy the tranquility and view.
Same. Give me the Sofitel Nusa Dua any day. While not wanting to get into a debate about the New Order government's human rights record. The Suharto government deserves credit for the beautiful and very functional Nusa Dua development. In some ways it's like a snippet of Singapore.
Dont get me started on Avo, I come from country Australia so we thankfully miss out on most of those hip eatery's, but whenever visiting Sydney its a challenge just to get breakfast without some form of Avo. What ever happened to bacon and eggs on toast with some hash browns???
Excellent & accurate vid. I lived at Berawa and Canggu for 3 years from Dec 2013. I realised I was 5 years too late then. Even though Bali was great fun and gave many good memories, Im so pleased I moved to settle in Thailand.
Bali was paradise 40 years ago and started dying after the millennium ...Changu was a tiny few houses village with the best gado gado for rp 4000 (half a dollar at the time)
Bali still has it’s rich culture and that spirit is the most important. Things change and you can call it westernization but you can also see it as something that all those balinese family’s are now able to provide for their families and make a nice living because there is way more infrastructure. Besides that, it’s way more fun and enjoyable instead of only rice fields and a shop or two.
I've always enjoyed the authenticity of your videos and this one came at no surprise. I would never have considered the traffic or long queues for Instagrammable smoothie bowls! Lol, thank you for always sharing your honest opinions!
Finally an honest review. The Balinese have been remarkably quick to adopt trendy foreign cultural practices. The avocado, tattoos, social media and yoga obsessions to name a few. On the "Island of the God's" in 2020 you're more likely to see the locals wearing scruffy shorts with sloppy fake designer T-shirts than sarongs and kebayas apart from at ceremonies. You'll will also notice an impending obesity epidemic brought on by the lack of incidental exercise (GOJEK, no decent parks and dangerously pot-holed footpaths do little to help). All the best with your channel. I respect your honesty and courage.
It’s content like this that thrives on places like Bali. Despite how you feel, this video is influencer’s format at it finest, like a dog biting it’s own tail.
I love Bali a lot, but cangu is not my cup of tea. Sidemen, Sudaji, Pemuteran, Melaya, Sumberkima, Tejakula and the list could go on endlessly, are all in Bali, minus the crowd and better place imho. Why not live with the local and spend more time, understand the culture and how they live (not just in Bali, but other places as well),to get a better picture and experience the truest essence of a place 😉 Cheers 🍻
Refreshing vlog. I have been to Bali over a dozen times since 1987...last trip 2019. Not too sure I would go back. Crowded, lots of garbage, insane traffic. Indonesia is huge diverse country with plenty of other places to travel to. It is nice to see a you tube video that does not just show the instagram worthy shots. Be safe.
we are right around the corner from you and we pay close to 260 pounds / month! Prices are lower now of course but thats quite expensive! We got a pool fast wifi and a kitchen as well!
That's a great deal! You're right that prices are much lower right now. It also varies based on the time of year. What size of place are you staying in? How many rooms are there?
If you’re obviously an introverted digital nomad, why don’t you just try out Sanur out in East Denpasar? I know that I, as a Balinese, can’t even stand Canggu and all of its foreigners a lot of the times. Sanur is and has all ways been where the wealthier Balinese live.
Canggu is now basically a ghetto of almost entirely white millennials. It’s almost unrealistic of you to think that these kinds of people would ever venture out of their way and try out actual REAL originally extremely spicy warung food, and I’m not talking about Canggu warungs however traditional they claim to be, because they basically serve bastardised Indonesian food catered towards Western palettes. So avocados, smoothie bowls and whatever shite Crate Cafe serves it is that they can stomach. You should have known this just by looking up Canggu on Instagram and RUclips before even getting to Bali and adjusted your expectations on Canggu accordingly.
Wow! The accuracy of this video. 🤯 I lived in Canggu for 6 months and although I loved it, made great friends, it is draining and doesn’t really have a soul. I recently moved to Amed, a small diving town 2 hours northeast, and it is paradise for the introvert in me.
