Nearly 40 years after the original mini jet (Bede BD-5), it looks like we potentially have a viable solution for a personal jet that is safe, fast, easy to build & fly, and reasonably priced.
southnc63 Hi southnc63. I certainly hope so. I am building my Sonex on this channel, and once I am finished, if I can afford it, I will build the SubSonex Jet. My dad built a BD-5 (piston/prop) years ago, he said there were more than a few design problems with it, but he thinks this SubSonex Jet will be safe and well designed as well. -Dan
I believe this is running a PBS TJ-100 turbine. Wonderful adaptation into personal aviation. I know these have auto start, 24v system and appear to be relatively safe, but I’m unsure about reliability of a low stage compressor. I’ve looked into building a twin GA experimental before, but according to my research, I don’t think it would be worth it. With approx 1150 Newtons of Force, these small turbines only produce approx 260 ft lbs of forward thrust, thus being a but under powered for the cost. Now, building a twin or a quad TJ-100 would be amazing. Won’t be long before we have personal turbofan engines we can purchase for GA aircraft adaptation. Imagine a twin with 2x the thrust. I think the single turbine is not efficient but in a glider it may be the best solution. Thanks for sharing. I need to fly into Oshkosh this year
Bede BD-5 or SubSonex JSX-2, opinions? I think that the BD-5 looks better than the JSX-2, but knowing that the design of the BD-5 is quite poor and the range is poor as well I think I would choose the JSX-2 with a better design and performance. Also the BD-5 isn't cheap as to say, it's around 125.000 $ while the JSX-2 comes as a kit at 40.000 $ + engine 50.000 $ it's still cheaper. And for the fact that it's still in development makes it more "future proof" than the BD-5 with a design that is 40 years old and originally piston engine if I don't remember right.
+The Aviation I too like the look of the BD-5, but they are just scary in every sense. They have killed far too many people from a poor design from day one. I like how Sonex used what they knew with their "keep it simple" philosophy and even using the same airfoil as the sonex because it is a very similar indicated airspeed envelope. When I finish my Sonex, I am thinking very seriously about building a Subsonex. -Dan

I Love this high pitch centrifugal compressor turbojet sound

So cute! I'd love a ride after you build it Daniel. Keep posting these awesome & informative videos!
Kelley McElroy its a single seat
@@harrybarker1408 There is a 2-seat in development.
welcome to the jet age sub sonex, fantastic!
I love the artificial propeller sounds they built into it.

I do agree to your sentiments. This is just the beginning, I hope I'm still around in 10-20 years to see what the future will bring.
Very nice !
If you 💕 the shape of the wings, this is about 1/20th the cost of a Cirrus SF50 jet.
I hope they make a 2-seater version of this.
A serious engine revision would be needed.
You can already put a deposit on the 2 seat version.
They are!

Can fly from N.Y. to London?
If you go high, you may have fuel for 2 hours of flying time. You can fly it from NY to London....London, Ontario !!
Yes... in a cargo container.

How much I can buy one

i luv planes
that was not a formation take off that was an interval take off.
2 words : "I WANT" !!!
I think I'm going to build it after I finish my Sonex. -Dan
The airshow announcer at Oshkosh is the WORLD'S WORST. He never shuts up!
That was NOT a formation takeoff for the BD-5.
+Larry Miller That was the last part of the video. Continue watching to the end. -Dan
@@danielolivermcelroy8320 how fast is this aircraft at sea level, top speed?
Would rather 2 engines on the sides
We always want more. It IS an experimental....so be creative.... (-;
Honestly I still think the BD5 jet is better looking.
They each have neat aspects about them. I could do with a Ferrari Red on the SubSonex, though. -Dan
ME WANT
Agreed! -Dan
Very beautiful plane
Check ur messages😂😂
Plainssssss
It is a very ugly plane.
aldebaran That flat boxy shape makes construction much faster and cheaper. Compound curves in the fuselage are pretty but very expensive.
And so is yo' mama!!!!!!
Not to me.
