Pokémon Puzzle Challenge, originally released in Japan as Pokemon de Panepon (ポケモンでパネポン), is a video game for the Game Boy Color. It is based on Panel de Pon ( tasvideos.org/... ) (known as Tetris Attack ( tasvideos.org/... ) in the West), only with characters from the Pokémon franchise.
zvsp plays through the hardest difficulty, whilst showing the different Pokémon, in Challenge Mode/VS COM Mode in a brisk 5 minutes and 11.62 seconds.

Guess that this was a market based title for a Cancelled GBC Port of Panel de Pon. When that got cancelled they just remade it into this.

I guess I can try explaining it, despite of this comment being almost a year old.
Pieces get deleted by placing 3 or more of the same type in a row, and you can make combos with them, causing the pieces deleted to deal more damage. It seems that the damage also increases if you remove more pieces at once.
This TAS combines both methods: it gets a combo to end onto removing 20-something pieces at once. I think that kind of attack is called a "hellfire", from some Puyo Puyo (it's not the same game, but the same strategy exists) videos I've seen using the same strategy, but I'm not sure.
