How to fix the Flashing DPF Light without taking your car to Mazda.
This was an issue for me, as my nearest Mazda dealer is over 100KM away... in a different state. And the fact that in the MZR-CD model, Mazda use the DPF Light not just for the filter, but also as the Service Light.
If the light returns or stays on after running this fix, then you DO have an issue with the DPF, Or a Stretched Timing Chain, or, there's an issue with your oil such as it being overfilled past the X marker.
Either way, if the light returns, immediately take it to your service centre.
If the light stays out, it was just the "service due" light. (Expect it to return in another 10,000km)

New version of this Video is up showing you how to use an ELM 327 device to confirm that it's just the service light!
ruclips.net/video/jbi9bvGwGjM/видео.html
Don't forget, the new version has a more stable and clear camera! you can see where to plug the cable in a LOT better in the new video! ruclips.net/video/jbi9bvGwGjM/видео.html
Still works in 2021 for my 2010s Mazda 6.
Thank you
Thank you!!!! This worked like a dream on my 2009 Mazda 6 TS2 (2.2 Diesel, 160bhp). Thanks for taking the time to make this video and for saving us all a fortune in garage fees!!
Glad it helped. But also, don't forget to check for trouble codes with an ELM-327 device. _(How to do this is seen in the video linked in the pinned comment)_
Thank you so much for this video. Had a scheduled MOT on my car and Mazda couldn’t help unless I booked a service. Worked with 5 push on gas pedal and not with 10, good thing I read the comments unless I would be in the same situation still. Thank you.
Yeah, i've read some posts, it's always worked for me doing 10 presses. but from what i understand, you only need to press repeatedly until the glow plug light appears (which happens around 5 pushes or so) for the reset to work.
Thank you! This saved me a bunch of money as the team that did my service couldn't find anything wrong and recommended I take it to Mazda!
That's probably the thing that makes me the most angry about this. _Using the DPF light as the scheduled Service light_
DPF's already have a bad name, because cars like the Holden Captiva and the Toyota Hilux had huge issues with their DPF systems.
So having a flashing DPF error light come on every 10,000km is going to make a lot of people think "DPF is broken again, DPF is terrible" even though it's got nothing to do with the DPF most times in the Mazda6.
Poor form on Mazda for thinking that replacing the service light with the DPF light for the diesel model was a good idea. It should have been its own seperate light.
Thanks buddy. I took cable from phone charger and prepared it. Can't believe that it took me one minute to get rid of this flashing light. Mazda 6 2.2 2011 UK.
I calculated miles done and it was definitely due to service light. I get oil change twice a year every 5k miles and last time it obviously wasn't resetted.
Thanks again u saved me fortune!
Glad it helped
@@DazzaJay is not a related question to the DPF, but I'm looking to get one of these cars, can u tell me what to look after before i get one. Im looking for 2,2 sky active diesel version + automatic. Or maybe petrol one because im doing not much motorway not sure yet thanks in advanced
@@danielvasev7264 all I can really mention is my own personal experience with my car.
I purchased mine from someone that did mainly highway(motorway) driving. It had 80,000km on it when I got it.
Since then I've got it all the way up to 320,000km. So far I haven't had any major issues with it. Just the odd minor things here and there.
The Factory Recalls my car has had:
*Takata Airbag.* _(No explanation necessary)_
*Rear Hatch Gas Struts.* _(If car lives near the ocean, the gas strut end caps can rust, causing explosion of gas strut)_
Other faults I've had with the car:
Headlights went yellow and cloudy.
Air Conditioner Compressor failed around 280,000km.
Rear tyres were wearing abnormally fast. Installation of Camber Kit corrected the tyre wear.
After camber kit was installed, the trailing arm rubbers failed within a few months.
After trailing arm rubbers were replaced there have been no more issues with the rear suspension.
In a nutshell:
Takata Airbag, Gas Struts, Headlights, Air-conditioning, Rear Camber kit, Trailing arm rubbers.
Other than that I personally haven't had any major issues with it, most issues were just standard wear and tear. (Brake pads, etc)
Arek, how many miles it takes for that light to come up? I got mine car like 5 years ago and only just got it flashing for the socond time recently. I make only around 7k miles/year so I guess it suggest doing service every 20k since last time it was flashing 3 years ago? :)
For me, who does a lot of driving. (It's up to 370,000km now) it seems to come on every 12,000km.
Just enough that if you took it to Mazda for service every log book 10,000km, you'd never see the light come on.
12,000 is just enough to really make people think something bad has happened if you miss a service, or have your car serviced elsewhere.
Worked a treat on my Mazda 6 2012 2.2 litre diesel. Took 3 attempts at pressing the accelerator pedal 10 times rapidly and all the way to the floor.. Make sure earth connections are clean and firm. Make sure oil is below the X mark on the dipstick. If not change the oil and filter.
Yes! i even think i forgot about the X Mark on the dipstick in my re-release of this video also! oh no! i may have to make a third one!
Awesome car due for service in 1k, selling it, this light came on, and i know its regularly serviced, and quoted over $200 for service, engine check etc..etc.. just thought I'd look online and voila I see this, in less than 5 minutes sorted and awesome, great work
I'm glad it helped. :-)
Excellent advice & video. Using this procedure, managed to switch off the DPF light on my Mazda 6. Had to repeat this 3 times before it worked. Saved myself a fortune. Thank you very much.
I'm glad it helped!
Another happy customer right here. Had to persevere but it worked. Cheers.
Did the same with mine. Worked fine. Happy days.
The light comes on every 20,000km, exactly.
I'm glad the video helped you!
Worked perfect for me, 2009 Mazda 6 (2.2 Diesel, 190bhp) Thank you very much for the video sir
Glad it helped
Amazing video just worked for me... the car never had a solid light went straight to flashing so hopefully it was just the service light and no actual problem with the dpf
Still fine?
@@bratubogdan5019 yes my fried perfection
This didn't work for me at first and I couldn't work out why. Then I read somewhere that the doors must all be closed when pressing the accelerator. When I did it again with doors closed it worked first time. Don't forget that the flashing light was your car telling you it needs some love! This is a service warning light so get a service or at least change the oil & filter. Good luck. Thanks very much for the video Kiwi Dan!
Kiwi? Close mate. Try a few thousand kilometres to the east from New Zealand.
:-P
Just want to say thanks again. I use this all the time. My 6 has just ticked over 300k and I'm sure its because I've done this and not let the mechanics do a "burn". My las t mechanic said " The car won't let me reset the light, we have to do a burn" i said no ty ill sort it. Less than 2 mins to sort thanks to you.
Worked like a charm on a 2009 Mazda 6 TS2 (2.2 Diesel, 160bhp).
BTW, 5 pedal presses are required (not 10), at least on my car.
Thank you!
glad i was able to help!
Worked a treat, took a few goes to get the wiring connection right with the wire i had available but great video and great result
Thank you, worked like a charm on 4th try for me (Mazda 6 2.2 TS 163bhp 2009) Appreciate your help with this video 👍
Worked perfectly. Mazda 6 2010 2.2 diesel. Thanks a lot 😀
Worked 1st time for me! Mazda 6 2008 2.0 D , many thanks!
Glad i could help! good to see it works on the 2.0 as well as the 2.2!
absolutely 💯% works someone buy this guy a pint Thanks 👍👍
Every year, your video helps me :)
Every 10,000km (about 6 months for me) I have to watch my own video to reset the light myself at service time. :-P
It works on Mazda 6 2.0D 2009. Thank's mate for great video and advice
This worked first go for my 2007 Mazda 6. Thanks heaps.
thats amazing! thank you very much brother! now my mazda 6 2.2 2011 is saved 🙏🏾
This is amazing, love the help mate. Worked like a charm on my 2010 mazda 2,2l. Thumps up mate!
Great video, my DPF light is now out!
Tried this on my Mazda 6 2007 mod. It did work great, blinking dpf light went away .. :-) big smile
glad i could help!
Thank you. Very happy for your help. 🙂🙂
Worked for me! 2nd time round. I figured I hadn't connected the earth securely enough the first time. (Mazda 6 2012) Happy.
Glad it helped!
Well done'Blue'. You saved the day for me here in the UK. A biiig, thank you.👏
It works. And be careful, if your mazda shows dpf light you must take care of this problem in 800km cause its gonna do emergency shutdown. (Said a guy in the official mazda service). Thank you for the video.
I'm lazy, I often drive up to 5,000km after the light starts before I service the car and then reset the light.
Thank you so much, worked on my European MZR 2.2 l diesel GH
Works perfectly! Dpf-regeneration counter has been resetted. Thanks for the video.
Success! Thanks a lot and greetings from Finland!
Thank you very much brother, today I got rid of this light
Many thanks, buy this dude a pint. 2011 Mazda 6 takuya DPF service light reset… 🎉
Oh man, I am going to try this tomorrow morning, can't wait to see if it really works
Don't forget to check the new version of this video ruclips.net/video/jbi9bvGwGjM/видео.html which has more information on the other reasons why the light can come on, and how to diagnose those issues.
Mark this date 24/11/20 Sir, I owe you a bottle of beer, no more like a bottle of Hennessy!! I tip ma hat to a legend. You technique saved my life!!! I don’t have much to offer you at this COVID period, but at least you’ll get an additional subscriber yo your channel. You saved my Mazda 2008!!
Worked absolutely spot on, saved me a hell of a lot of money, thank you kindly sir👌🏼❤️
Worked for my 2011 Mazda 6, Thanks !
Worked first time in Mazda 6 2012. Thanks mate
Worked a charm cheers mate , mine only got serviced other month no way would it need a clean 😂
This works on my 2009 mazda 6 2.2 d too, but you have to press the accelerator a lot faster.
It worked perfectly 😎. Thank you so much 😎
Mine is a mazda 6 2.2 from 2012
Cheers bud, was about to go to the main stealers.
But they've already had 960 quid off me for a new steering lock module!
Glad it helped!
Thanks you so much for the tip, it worked on my mazda 2010 2,2 Diesel !
Glad it helped
crazy thank you so much for this great idea dude
Thank you so much! Nobody really explains that the light could just be a service light. Tried it and it worked. Where do you find out this stuff!?
Lots of research. Also there's an obscure line in the owners manual that says that it's also the service light. (But it's worded in an arse-about way)
1st time a you tube video has actually worked thanks
I'm glad i could help!
Thank you worked from first time
It worked on UK 2010 2.2 ts2. Thanks!
Glad i could help!
Cheers for the info dude, helped me out a treat
Worked great.. Thanks a lot for this. Top notch bit of advice. Very much appreciated. Thank you
No problem. Glad I could help.
Just worked for me (here’s a tip it didn’t work the first two times! I then split the cable and inserted it into both sides of the connection then it worked first time cheers
Great Video!!! And it actually works!!
*Massive THANK YOU*
It worked for a 2011 Mazda 6, 2.2 D
Cheers
I'll be trying on mine later, is the fuse box in the same place as in the video because the car in the video is older than 2011.
Thanks
I'm glad the video helped you!
You sir are a wonderful human. Thank you for this amazing video!
I'm glad i was able to help!
Brillant !! Worked like charm.. recently I had oil change serviced, I think mechanics may not reseat counter by purpose? So a few weeks later you would ask them for help? I remember that first time 3y ago I was in that situation.. and regeneration was performed.. but year later I asked to reseat counter and no problem only now it happened again wit new staff.. That make you think.. I travel to work 60km daily above 2000rpm so...
I'm glad i could help :-)
Fantastic, worked for me perfectly
Glad it helped!
Thank you. Worked exactly as shown! Ta
thank you very much😊
Thanks bud great little trick, worked on a British Mazda 6 Takuya 2010
Glad i could help!
Still works perfekt. Thanks
You're my hero! Thank you very much!
Top video fella.. worked a charm on my 2012 Mazda 6.. nice one.
glad i could help!
This video is gold!
Thank you very much, it really worked 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏 Is it possible to turn this light on again?
I didn't thought it will work but surprisingly it worked, thank you very much. Will this cause any further issues, like engine seizure or something??
It shouldn't. As the light is programmed to come on every 10,000 or so km, to tell you that your service is due. So, it will return after another 10,000km.
Its always good to check with an ELM327 device to see if the car has recorded any other faults though. (See the video in the pinned comment on how to do that)
My model is a Mazda 3 2011 2.2 Diesel. Does not have this connector that you have under the cover cap....
Mazda 3 has a different procedure to the mazda6. Check this other video : ruclips.net/video/aD4lDH8VBS8/видео.html
It worked perfectly! Many thanks 🙏
I'm glad i was able to help!
Thanks a lot this video just saved my dad 😂
Thanks Bro 🎉😊
Thank you!
My 2012 Mazda 6 Sport has push button start so how do you do it with that?
I believe there is a way to do it, although it's different. I do not know the method for bush-button start. I have done a bit of Googling and have not found any method to do it for Push Button Start. You could probably ask on www.mazdaforum.com and they might know the answer.
Hi thank you for this video. I just spent a whole heap of money to regenerate, clean and soak my dpf because it keeps flashing. My mechanic who is not a mazda specialist says the light might be on but guarantees the dpf fine. If I do this fix, would it be bypassing any other issues? And I guess, come on again in 13k miles?
I can't speak for international models, (Mine is a Japanese built Australian model)
But the DPF light does double as the "Service Light"
It comes on a set intervals (every 10,000km for the Aus model) as a service reminder.
Running this method to reset the DPF light will turn the light off until the next service interval.
Just remember the light is also used for other reasons such as:
Faulty DPF.
Poor oil condition.
Stretched timing chain.
And also, any recorded OBD codes.
So, after running this reset, if the light returns before the next service interval, then there's a good chance that something else is wrong.
@@DazzaJay thank you
How long will the dpf light stay off? Will it come back anytime soon?
It will return in about 10,000km (time for your next service)
Great video, Worked for us too .
thanks. Is this method works too for another light, for example Air bag light ?
Probably not. If you've got airbag light, check the error code using an ELM327 device. It should tell you the fault. And it's probably something that Mazda would have to fix.
Thank you so much for this. Worked a treat. Have I just masked a fault though?
It really depends.
The light comes on every 10,000 km to tell you the car needs a service.
It can also come on for a huge list of other issues.
Too much oil.
Bad quality oil.
DPF Fault.
And many others.
Which is why in the new version of this video (link in the description) I also show how to check the car for other issues before performing the reset.
Is the flashing dpf light a service light then?
In a new version of this video here: ruclips.net/video/jbi9bvGwGjM/видео.html
I explain some of the reasons the light can come on.
It can come on for DPF Fault,
it can come on for Stretched timing chain,
it can come on for "too much oil" (oil above the x marker on the dipstick.
However, it's most common reason for illumination (every 10,000km) is because it's being used as the Service light.
You should connect an ELM 327 and check for codes. If there's no codes, it's just the service light.
Brilliant. It is work. Thank you very much
Hi
I have a Mazda 5 2010 - cannot see that slot in the fusebox...?
Is covered with a capsel.. maybe?
thank you so much 🤗🤗🤗
What about mazda cx7 20211 2.2 diesel engines?
20211? is that 2021 or 2011?
If 2011, this video looks like it has the solution:
ruclips.net/video/MWem09QuIvE/видео.html
Just make sure if it doesn't go out that is also the sign that your timing chain has stretched. This happened to me
I believe the timing chain issue was fixed in the GH series, and only affected the GG series of Mazda6. (Or, at least in the Australian models)
Yes mine has come on after around 50 miles after doing the wire trick. I've plugged it in and has come back with crankshaft code - ( Stretched timing chain ) How much was it to get this sorted and was it a big job?
Great job . Thanks
It's working! Thx a lot!
Glad I could help!
Does this work on 07 mazda 6 mzr cd 2lt turbo diesel an will it lift any engine restrictions that may have occurred due to this light flashing?
If there are restrictions currently active, check your car for codes using an ELM327 device. (See this video for instructions: ruclips.net/video/jbi9bvGwGjM/видео.html )
As restrictions would indicate that it's not just the simple service light, and that something else may have gone wrong.
As this light can mean many things, such as:
Service Due.
DPF Fault.
Stretched timing chain.
Oil condition bad.
Oil above "X" marker on the dipstick.
And many other things.
Checking with an ELM327 device should let you know if it's a major issue or not.
Hi mike is it the same procedure for Mazda 5. The dpf light is flashing.
Is it possible to cover the real issue with DPF? I mean, if I have real problem with DPF, use your way to reset, would signal come back, or problem gonna stay hidden? Thank you.
To check is you have a real DPF issue, simply plug in an ELM327 reader into your car (under the steering wheel) and use an app like OBD Auto Doctor to read the error codes from the cars onboard computer.
If it says there's no error codes, it's just the service light.
If it's a real DPF issue, there will be a code.
I will be making a new video on this in the next few months.
@@DazzaJay Ok. Tnx for answering.
Flashing DPF lights on the 2.2 can also mean a stretched timing chain is a found out..Expensive fix. It's always worth checking on the diagnostic before clearing it ..
@@265justy Last I was told the stretched timing chain issue affected the GG Mazda6, and was fixed by the time of the GH Mazda6.
But yes, always use an ELM-327 device and check for codes first.
If no codes stored, then it's just the service light and it's safe to reset.
@@DazzaJay . MY model is a 09 year 2.2L 185HP UK import as I live in southern Ireland. I'm also thinking of removing the DPF filter itself.
Hi,any idea how to remove power steering light? Sometimes it's flashing power steering light and the steering becomes hard
Check the pinned comment. At the start of the new video in the pinned comment, it will show you how to check for error codes, this will tell you WHY the power steering light is on.
You can also clear the codes. If it returns, you'll need a mechanic. If it doesn't you should be fine.
Hello, I have a Mazda CX 3 but I don't know where the reset plug for dpf is, can you please help me
Thank you
Sometimes the socket is down next to the radiator.

Hey man thank you so much and God bless you
I'm glad i was able to help! and may Zeus be with you!
Danku welll.
Dit is echt super

Your tyre looks completely bold
It's quite possible that it was back then. But as this was filmed years ago, I've had multiple sets of tyres since. (Where I live, you need to get a "road worthy certificate" every year to keep the car registered. It wouldn't pass with bald tyres, so I always make sure they're good before inspection)
Thank you!! It worked.
Awesome video worked a treat thanks for helpful info.
Glad it helped
Thank you so much. You made my day better :)
I'm glad i could help!
Good advise if it's for a service. However the dpf light shouldn't be ignored - Mazda in their wisdom also use a flashing dpf light to notify you of a stretched timing chain!!!! Do not ignore or reset it, plug your car into some diagnostics and read the code, anything relating to crankshaft will mean your timing chain is on the way out! Replace it asap! Be safe fellow Mazda diesel drivers!
The stretched timing chain issue was in the GG Mazda6, not the GH. (At least in Australia)
And also when the light is flashing for a service, OBD will report *no error codes*
@@DazzaJay exactly! Best to read to codes before resetting anything!
Daniel Fitzgerald sorry but thats not right. If the dpf light is flashing in case of oil change, there should be P0254 recorded in the ecu. Greetings from Germany. Ex Mazda mechanic ✌️
@@DazzaJay The GG Mazda uses the 2.0L engine..not the 2.2 as used in the GH.. The 2.2 has serious timing chain issues and a flashing DPF light could possibly mean the timing chain is in trouble. It's happened to me and many others. I have been driving Mazdas all my life..I have had 2 × 323Fs BA & BG models , MX-3, GG 6 ..all petrol .And now the GH 6 diesel & as much as I love the low down torque and power, it has just not been as reliable as my previous Mazda petrols. My wife also has a Mazda 3 BL model 1.6L diesel which is after having a few problems.. Failing to go into regeneration to clear the DPF being it's main problem , so I had it removed. Mazda build great petrol engines , but their diesels are under developed and even the new Skyactive diesels are still having issues.
Detlef Harms: Every single time mine has come on (every 10,000km) there has never been any codes. - so I'm getting the boring old Australian service light.
