All this talk about the cover, but the most obvious question isn't addressed: What the heck is happening to Frank? Is he exploding? Did he leave a live grenade in his back pocket? Or does that CRT television also happen to have rocket boosters, Frank desperately clinging onto this flying TV/VCR/DVD combo for dear life as it thrusts him out of this rather hairy zombie encirclement?
MarphitimusBlackimus Seriously though. What the heck’s happening there.
MarphitimusBlackimus At his age, a case of explosive diarrhea is common. Sorry that I resorted to a poop joke but someone had to do it. :)
obama What's a TV doing plugged in in the middle of the entrance plaza?
Frank is just so badass he can cause himself to explode at will.
There's a bit More weird history with the box art. In 2010, Universal Studios Orlando used the same artwork in their poster for the Halloween Horror Nights haunted house "Zombiegeddon". I don't know why or how or if they used it with permission but I recognized it right away. Google it.
Your ability to make interesting videos about one 12 year old game is nothing short of remarkable. Long live DR1.
I cannot unsee the Natalie and Jeff on the boxart now.
I've had this game for eleven fucking years and I never once noticed that
It's even on the PS4 version's box
Why did they do it? I didn't understand why it's added??
Man, that is so weird. I had absolutely no idea that they did any of this. It's kind of a mix between creative and lazy. I'm not even sure if there is a word that can describe it. Still, they did manage to pull off one hell of a cover art.
Yeah, i agree, creative but lazy but thats okay haha i think the art looks so amazing
efficiency is the word you're looking for
Oh shit "SWEGTA" had no idea you were here bro but like they say once a die hard fan of "Dead Rising" always a die hard fan of "Dead Rising".
Really cool to see you here
I was reading that comment with SWEGTA's voice on my mind
Wow, when I saw Jeff And Natalies health bar, my jaw dropped. I can't believe I missed that.
I can never look at the box art the same way now. Thanks STiP0.
Plenty of Photoshop artists mash things together to get the right effect. The creator of this cover art was no doubt thinking about colour balance and whether areas looked barren, which prompted them to add the details from other plazas. I really wouldn't call this lazy, actually, it's one of the smartest ways I've seen to represent so much of the game in a single image while ultimately producing an attractive result.
They also used the Chinese restaurant sign "Jade" behind the Dreams sign too!
Probably the most mind-blowing thing about it has to be that Jeff/Natalie screen grab. It's just so... lazy, haha. It's kind of funny.
And they've kept it for the re-release on PS4 & X1. It's even on the dashboards
I think they were going for a hallucinogenic "ptsd memory" feel. The smoky edges being like the frayed ends of sanity, the light emanating from Frank being a representation of his adrenaline, rage, and will to survive get the word out about what caused this hell to break out. The mash up of different parts of the mall indicate maybe Frank wasn't paying attention to where everything was, only weapons, food, and supplies. I don't know. Replaying it recently I forget how horrifying it was. The low drone of a thousand undead souls moaning out in hunger for flesh is rendered perfectly, the psycos really feeling like normal people who saw or lost too much, or got scared and broke. I hate killing Cletus, the gun store guy. He was just a man who was scared to the point he wouldn't even do business with anyone. His refusal to listen to Frank who was just keeping him from hurting anyone else leading to a grisly end gets me every time.
When you was show the "Jeff" and "Natalie" names, I was go so fast to get my Xbox Game Box, and there I was see it! And now, I can't see the Cover Art without see that Beta Names...
Me too it's so awesome! And kinda wierd
What's shocking is on the PS4 dashboard you see the beta names. Capcom are absolute mad lads
My favorite aspect of the cover art is how it shows total determination/desperation to survive. Frank is the only human alive in this cover art (ignoring Jeff and Nat’s lifebars) so he’s using anything around him to survive. Reminds me of the original DOOM cover art. The sparks behind him is probably the sparks from the wires of the TV since Frank probably yanked it from wherever it was connected in a haste. Least that’s what I think. DR2 and DR3 are great and fun, but they don’t show total desolation like Willamette did . Then again, when those games happened several outbreaks past 2006 occurred, so it must be an average Tuesday for the average citizen.
I think the reason they used different parts of the mall for the background was to represent them all
Artlas the mall......
Dead rising is my drug of choice and your my supplier
BadaBing *you're
It’s always weird to notice that some classic games made their cover art early in development and have things that the release version don’t have
I guess cover art helps by setting a constant or a main inspiration image.
This is one of my favorite cover arts because of just how crazy the situation is on it. It would immediately catch someone's eye in a game store and make them go, "wtf, that dude is surrounded by zombies, wielding a tv and showing the most savage war face all at once." At least that's how I felt when I first picked up the game. I love classic games that show a basic male protagonist facing ridiculous unbeatable odds and give no fucks, so inspiring.
I now have a new perspective on the cover art this game
Stipo is the only person I can listen to go on about box art for 10 minutes.
God, I can barely talk about something more than 10 minutes overall before I start basically saying the same thing over and over again, and not being able to add anything interesting no more. Awesome that you still have new stuff to show us that will have us know more about the og Dead Rising. You really are preserving the history of this game, and man am I glad that it’s you who is doing just that.
Thank you so much for making this! The cover of og dead rising always caught my eye and was just so damn cool, I even have a poster of it! Ive always wondered about its history so this is sick!
I can't believe i never noticed how chopped together this was, hell from the window cut for the top of the art you can see the knife the "Thug Zombie" was holding in the original image behind Frank's head pretty clearly. They added a small bit of color from the "explosion" surrounding Frank over it to try to mask it out as well.
Game came out over a decade ago and you're still finding interesting stuff to talk about. Quality. Love it.
Wow... just wow... To be honest, I really saw many times the box art of Dead Rising 1, but I never notice the most of this things in this video.
Just found your channel through this video, and this was really well presented and in depth! I didn't realize how interesting a game cover art could be
2:05 love that initial d music😂👌
I always thought the Jeff/Natalie thing looked like one of those digital LED ticker display signs that you'd see in an airport or stock market room
I absolutely adore this game, one of my all time favorites (Zombie frank tattoo on my forearm) and the year it came out, I drew the cover for art class. I remember seeing the Jeff and Natalie tags and thinking it was my cool little discovery for YEARS. Legit, you're the first person I've ever seen mention it! Love your videos!
Honestly when I was younger I assumed the Jeff and Natalie green text was a neon sign that was too blurry to read.
This is called Photobashing or Matte Painting. It’s normal industry standard. It’s to be more efficient. Where something would take an artist 10 hours, will take them 2-3 hours or less.
The only issue I have with the cover art would be that they should paint over it a little better to make it more seamless. The contrast is also really high and harsh. But that could also be on purpose because of the style they’re going for.
You’d be surprised that lot of video game/movie/show concept art is a collage of photos that are painted over to seamlessly put them together. It’s been this way for many many years.
Glad someone is still releasing content related to this great game. I'll have to play it through again.
This is one of your best videos, I love all the analysis done to the image
I’ve never seen anyone more dedicated to Dead Rising more than this guy. Thank you for being dedicated to such a fantastic game.
Even though they basically threw the box art together, it's still one of my most favorite art pieces of any video game ever
I legit had to go and pick up my old copy of Dead Rising from my room to see Natalie and Jeff
I find it so fascinating that although the mashed up parts looks rather weird and lazy they're still photoshopped well enough to where it doesnt look unusual at first glance
When i bought the game like 3-4 months ago i was surprised of how good the picture is and seeing a video about it is really exciting! Thanks man
Great video dude. never realized how much was hidden in the cover. Always enjoy seeing what you'll show us next!
That boxart is so lazily put together but so unnoticeably so it’s amazing.
I love how you go deep into this! Goodjob man! 😊🤙🏽
I can't believe I never noticed the bright green text in the middle of the box art, I've owned this game for almost 20 years.
Great video again man you still amaze me with these videos. Keep up the great work!
A very weird but fascinating box art, as I just love the sheer chaos within this frame. Frank's will power, and desperation to plow through zombies is another highlight for me.
Damn, my morning ended up being spent drinking coffee and watching STiP0 vids. Killer content and great research man!
Phenomenal video, man. Makes me appreciate the cover even more!
I remember buying dead rising 1 at blockbuster and seeing the box art and being amazed of how cool it looks on the cover
I noticed a couple of weird things on the cover, but I never knew there were so many weird things!
I used to question why the box cover was like that but I’m glad you showed us why
Totally love this stuff. Never sunk this many hours into a game when I was a lot younger,
I just watched a 10 minute video on boxart for a game I've never played. Subbed.
it's called a composite image and it's meant to portray how you remember a place feeling
That’s crazy. It’s weird to see how many edits just the cover art went through shows how interesting development was for this game.
Wait… what would the box art even be for the Deluxe Remaster? Well the website has a few images that would suffice, but all the absurdity would be gone.
I love your channel and I love Dead Rising, thanks for having such badass content!
Great channel, just wanted you to know, that you made me to play trought the first dead rising game. Now I am addicted to it. What a great game. Weird part, that I played it long time ago, but I never got in to it so much as I did now. So yeah, thank you for making me fall in love with this franchise.
I cannot unsee the natalie/Jeff thing. You are awesoem my man, a whole channel about my favorite game ever....👌🏼
I always noticed the Frozen Dreams sign in the cover art... Didn't knew about the rest of it, though. Nice video!
Not only are those windows from the picture from the winter sale picture, you can actually see the zombies hand from the picture that is holding the knife right behind Frank in the bloom effect as well!
Wow this blew me away good job bro
Man I just love every video you make on this wonderful game I'm really happy I found you :) I have the eu box and I always stared at that back in the day and I still do like to just look at it every now and then its a shame it isn't as interesting as the US one but I still love it and though I doubt it if there's anything you have to say about them that maybe I didn't notice I'd love that too. xD
Wow, you're content is great! Dead Rising 1 is easily my favorite for so many weird reasons.
I love the Wii version box art. With the doors chained up barely keeping zombies out and Frank's smug smile.
I love how that one hallway/whatever on the cover art will forever just say JeffNatalie
I really like that cover among other games, realistic approach and overall feel to it makes it a great picture. And gotta love CRT, if game would've to be released in 2016 for some reason, in would be plasma or LCD for sure.
Well I'll be damned! Each time I'm hoping to see something i already know but you just keep on surprising!
You call it laziness, but I think it's genius how much recycling they were able to do and make the image look as great as it does now (at least from afar lol)
Im glad I've seen someone else point the Jeff and Natalie part that shit had me confused when I first found it
I'm shocked at how well the artist managed to blend so many different screen grabs together, and the fact that it's from so many different builds makes it almost have a nostalgic vibe? Like it's a roadmap or scrapbook of the development of the game hidden in the cover art itself
Also as an artist; laziness is only a bad thing when the product looks noticeably lazy, which this cover art definitely does not, otherwise it's just "efficient" instead
Thanks for not playing the generic rap snare beat untill the end, much appreciated, great video too, keep up the good work
Love the video STiP0
This was really interesting! Now I love my steam background even more
Damn awesome video man the next time i replay this game ill never look at the box art the same way again.
With the windows in the background, you can even still see the knife the thug zombie was holding in the original image just floating there. It blows my mind how lazy yet somewhat creative they were with this cover.
5:08 along with windows you can also see the knife being held by the thug zombie has been brought in.
Thank you for this. I've always wondered how exactly they pulled it off
OOOH, so that's why that box art always messed with me, I knew something was up with it, all these years...Jesus STiP0, you're awesome.
>Randomly recommended to me
>Only played DR2 for 30 mins
It was still super interesting, loved the video
And once again, STiP0 delivers.
I paused the video and checked my PS4 copy to see if Jeff and Natalie were still there, and sure enough they were.
I always loved the way Frank looked on the cover.
I never saw the Jeff and Natalie thing on the box art ever! I check my box just to confirm that this was real and yup he ain't lying! Thanks for showing us these awesome things that are on the box art!
I have this game, and ever since you pointed out the Jeff and Natalie part of the art, I can’t unsee it 😂
Dead Rising’s box art has always been one of my favorites but I never knew it was such a mishmash of locations and renders that aren’t even in the final game.
The Jeff and Natalie text will always be the first thing I notice now
The Frankenstein beta mall on the cover reminds me of a mall in Altoona PA, with food court at the parking garage entrance, a two story mall.
oh boy, you are like those teachers that want you to know that the red door is red because reasons and not because the author wanted it to be red. And don´t misjudge me, i love this explanation, and i love how dedicated you are to the dead rising saga (except 4), kudos man.
Wouldn't that mean it's possible to recreate the full cover art image? Or at least the background of it, without the logos or renders? It'd be interesting to see!
Also, nice video! I've never noticed all of this stuff in the cover art before, this was really cool to watch
Let’s try to look at this logically for a moment and think how this even happened. First, assuming the Frank and zombies portion of the artwork was always made to be for the cover art and not something random like some nice promotional material or something. So they did all that, but when it came time to fill the rest of the space around it, they were really just like ‘we’ve got some screenshots we used for things like magazines, just take a bunch of junk from those, photoshop the hell outta them and it’ll be good enough’ because I can’t see another reason. I’d say maybe cuz they were low on time they had to submit something, but why not just use the Europe or Japan art? Yeah that thing with the zombies and Frank would go unused but still
when he cropped the image and compared it to the text in the background, i genuinely (metaphorically) shat bricks
I wonder if the original "darker" story (Where Isabella is captured by Larry, and Carlito and Brad seemingly don't exist) took place in December. Hence "Final WINTER Clearance", being replaced with "Willamette is the mall for me"
September is more the very start of Fall after all
Subbed. Surprised you didn't mention the obviously real TV that Frank is holding, they didn't even bothering to paint over to make it match the artwork!
NICE JOB, AND THIS WAS ON MY BIRTHDAY TOO!! X3
U sir have earned a sub. Amazing
Also at 4:55 you can see in that cut out paradise plaza beta image the outline of the hunting knife the yellow shirt zombie has raised
i honestly had no idea that jeff and natalie thing was in the actual box art
mind = blown
Amazing Video loved it ^.^
I wonder if the cover was just all of the mall and mechanics in one box art
8:07 if you look closely you can even see Yellow Thug Zombie right behind him on the staircase!
Wow, how did you even notice this STiP0
Where’s Chop Til You Drop on this? REEEEE. Just kidding, good job on this video and I seriously didn’t realize the Jeff/Natalie thing and love your videos man keep up the great work!
