    Even with the colored zombies, and the happy atmosphere in the final version. I felt the game very spooky with the uncountable zombies in the mall. Especially in the night, when the lights turn off, and the zombies turn more agresive, with their red eyes in the dark.

    For me the "dark" aspects of the game lie in its "survivor death cutscenes" where we see people shoot themselves, have guts ripped open, turned into zombies, literally ripped apart. It's very scary when you look at it.

      When a male survivor is killed by a female zombie, it's hard not to laugh at it tbh. The female zombies almost always get on top of the dude in the 69 position and bites his crotch off.

    My personal favorite is the TGS build. I love the dissonance between the horrifying zombies and cheery mall, and I almost think it would fit even better with the theme of the story kind of being a corruption of the seeming innocence of a cheery small-town mall.

    It's honestly quite amazing to see how many ideas they had. Personally they all have their appeal. I would've loved a combo of all 3 or just 2 of them. The dark creepy vibe at night would've added more to the mall being shut down for the day and not totally ruin the more warm and welcoming appeal it has in day time.

  • @LeadingMole058
    @LeadingMole058 6 лет назад +35

    For me DR1 felt more serious and more of a thrill/horror theme with the comedy and lite hearted fuckery was a bi-product of the mall and what we as players could do. Especially when compared to the sequels that seemed to focus more on comedy with zombies just thrown in.

  • @SWEGTA
    @SWEGTA 6 лет назад +172

    All 3 versions have their own different appeals in my opinion. And I would've been happy with either direction.
    I will say this though... Dead Rising 2 should've amped up the dark and gory vibe. It would've fit the drama themed story more if the zombies and the environment was way darker and more gruesome.
    Just like in the first game, there is something about a happy everyday location contrasting the violent and destructive nature of zombies that just makes it work. Having the zombies look goofy and cartoony kills that vibe, at least for the most part.
    Dead Rising 3 & 4 failed to deliver on the horror end of things because it just felt too fucking goofy. Fart jokes, fighting a fat lady on a scooter, Frank acting like a goofball etc. It all numbs the horror aspect of the game, and eventually your horror game turns into an action adventure comedy zombie game targeted at the Call of Duty crowd (which is actually what Capcom did, believe it or not).

    i think the comedy aspect of the final deadrising kinda reminds us that: not much seperates us from the psychopaths; only difference is, we're having fun killing the zombies; not survivors: and there in lies the problem
    we dont give ANY thought to the countless zombies we slay; but they used to be people, like us, like the survivors we lead to the security room; and here we are having fun at their expense

    Now this is my opinion but i think they could of used both models the newer zombies and the older zombies in the final version of the game mainly because if you think about it zombies will constantly decay so having models show that kind of detail like for example the older zombies would of been a nice touch because it shows people that some of the zombies were around longer than others and their bodies were starting to show that and the newer zombies could of been used for recently zombified survivors or story related character deaths.

    i have a facebook photo of me when i was like 5 playing this and i always felt like i loved the darkness of the game. i knew it was pretty colorful and jokingly for a “horror” game, also not for my age at the time, but i still really loved it. especially when it got dark out and going on the pause menu for long periods of time because i was horrified of the game. i felt like if they kept the dark aspect i would’ve totally taken a lot longer finishing the game when i did, but honestly that was like the best first serious game i learned and tried to finish by myself.

      I also believe that the "Happy tone" the game gives off is scary, think about it, happy, bright mall with shops aplenty with cool, awesome and dump shit in there, a place a kid would love then infest it with the undead, that happy look is still there but it's also coated in some spots of a thick, red liquid and guts and bone everywhere, that happy tone is there but with everything that's going on, with the dead and the psychopaths roaming about (Especially that cult) it adds a sense of dread to that happy tone, making it more scary which I think is awesome, you see the happy tone, then the dead, then the psychos and you know that Today, is going to be far from a happy day

      I had always heard that the reason DR3 looked like it did is because the American audience complained about it being "too japanese" because of the goofyness and colors. I've always blamed Call of Duty because this would imply that they might have looked at something with vary neutral samey colors that americans enjoy (stupid ass Call of Duty) and based the changes on that. This is all proof-less though and i wouldn't use it in any sort of argument or debate.

Ever minute was important in order for the case to not expire, along with saving other survivors in the mall. I believe that the colorful atmospheres and the not so scary dead zombies are perfect ! After completing a case you are given some what of a break to do what you like, saving survivors, zombie killing spree, and/or explore the mall, 😏. This is meant to be a stress release without being timed on a case or saving survivors (if that makes sense).

    When playing DR1, I definitely feel like there was a war amongst developers about the tone of the game. The opening cutscene of the mother and daughter in the car doesn't feel like the world of Dead Rising. The survivor death scenes are extremely brutal. One of the first survivors you can rescue describes in detail her baby getting eaten by those monsters. And it feels needlessly edgy for the military to come in and execute all the survivors you worked hard to save in between story missions. Even the endings leave things on a hopeless note if you decide to actually do the story, with Frank West being likely dead until sequels confirmed he and Isabella actually survived somehow. These choices in the narrative really bring down the vibe of the game for me and is why I ultimately prefer the sequel.

    • @Halagini
      @Halagini Год назад +1

      The prologue cutscene fits the world of DR1 wonderfully, even if it's out of place relative to what we experience in the game. It showcases that not everyone can be a fighter like Frank, and the contrast it provides is why it's so good. The survivors are also not executed by the military, as Otis says he escaped with people and they still are recognized as 'safe' beyond that point - it would be incredibly stupid of the devs to explicitly kill all survivors the players saved since it's the main objective outside of case missions, which is why they didn't. DR2's story is so mediocre in comparison because of bad pacing, bad choreography, unemotive voice acting, no rapport built with supporting characters, inferior psychopaths, and nonsensical antagonists.

    • @ZappBranniglenn
      @ZappBranniglenn Год назад

      @@Halagini When a DR1 survivor dies with a gun in their hand, the camera cuts to show them blowing their brains out. So heck yeah the military came in and killed all the survivors. When Frank overheard all that gunfire before entering the safehouse, what do you think they could have been firing at in there? Why doubt what the game is telling you in that scene? But you're free to prefer DR1's tonal shifts if you want. I'm just saying it bothered me to sit through.

    I kinda disagree on Dead Rising being light hearted, however only to a certain extent. Like others have said Dead Rising has a very serious tone during story moments, cutscenes, and when dealing with survivors. Everybody in the story takes this situation seriously and does not treat it as a joke. The comedy comes the juxtaposition of all that against what the player is allowed to do in the game and how we mess around in this sandbox. I was entirely compelled by the stories of Cliff and Adam, grew to hate Carlito and Ronald, and Frank as a character I grew to love. I think the balance of horror and comedy is what gives dead rising its unique identity along with its unique gameplay premise. All this is something later entries didn't understand and went overboard with the comedic side of the franchises and neglected the horror of the situation, which ruined the unique atmosphere dead rising 1 had.
    Also as a point, I get why they went with the zombie designs they did. The reason they might not have gone with the more ghoulish designs is that they wanted something more realistic and off putting given the setting. They chose what they did because these ARE normal people who were bitten and turned, they've only been like this for maybe a day or two max. They wouldn't be facing such decomposition yet where they're faces are melting off. I would have appreciated some damage shown on them in form of say what look like battle scars of people who tried to fight back and failed, but given when this came out I understand why they didn't due to graphical and time limitations. But having this uncanny valley effect with the zombies I really think helps sell that these were once people who lived in Willamette now turned into zombies, not just ghouls who could have come from anywhere.

    I think that the beta version of DR was too similar to Shadow of Rome, the IP Dead Rising comes from.

    Dead Rising kept changing itself to become what it was. Dead Rising 4 is an example of a company with no adaption skills.
    So many companies fall for this trap.
