    Excellent lesson. I like the basic tactical structure that evolves to a complexity that still uses the base tactic.

    7:55 "There are rules where if you flag but your opponent has insufficiant mating material, then it's a draw" - according to FIDE, if a checkmate is technically possible, then the flagging player still loses. So if you flag with king and pawn vs. king and knight you lose.

    • @rodantero
      @rodantero 7 лет назад +9

      You lose if a mating position can be reached with those pieces on the table. There's a famous (or infamous) case, which to some might be viewed as unfair, but according to the rules there was no other outcome possible. It was the last game (an Armageddon one to separate the players since the result was equal) in round one of World Women Chess Championship 2008 between Monica Socko and Sabina Foisor, in which Sabina flag fell, but the position was knight versus knight. Initially the arbiters gave the result as a draw but, after Monika's appeal (rules.chessdom.com/appeals-committee-socko-foisor ),she qualified because there is a position that can be reached where white can deliver mate. I tried this position with my friend on chess.com and it said draw by insufficient material even though if black moved it would be mate in 1

    His lecture did not sound packed to the rafters with attendees, which is a shame because they are getting exceptionally good tuition and advice. If only we had something half as good in my town. Do players flock to St Louis and live there awhile so they can be at the club all hours playing, going to lectures, spectating matches?

      If you're below 2000 rated, you don't really need tutoring to improve. Focussing on consistently applying basic ideas will get you at least 2000 elo. I've been playing for about a year and a half and I'm 1800 rated and I am still actively trying to improve on the basics. I haven't had any tutoring and I only watched this because I was watching Eric Rosen stream and he referenced this so I was curious. In any case, my point is that I consciously understand that I can still get a lot better. My highest rated rapid win was a 1900 rated player.

      @@ilikecommenting6849 you obviously mean Lichess rating...not Elo.

    7:36 this was happened in aliferoza Vs Magnus in WBC2019 December 30 ..Ali lost on time being up material and carlsen had a chance to win if Ali blunders..so Magnus was declared winner in a crucial match!

    At 15:13 after Rg8 can you play Kh7 or Kf7 and after a8 Queen you can play Rg1 check and at least win the rook. I know the endings still technically losing.

    13:00 white could just let black take the pawn on a7, then make progress from there

    In the 2nd puzzle, I wondered why black did not take the knight. But After Rb2, white is simply winning. The king was supposed to be at d3 for the composition to work.

    • @SpaceCadet4Jesus
      @SpaceCadet4Jesus 7 лет назад

      Superiorblaze 007 (2nd puzzle @3:30) After 3rd move Rb2, its a simple back rank mate move order with just the white king and rook, nothing special (why he had trouble with it, is beyond me). Interestingly, you noted the white Kd3 starting position, which begins a more complex pinning forced mate maneuver, which I preferred as a puzzle and which I solved.
      Who says a King and a Knight are insufficient material to mate?

  • @Uerdue

    2:54 It's not the same thing... After 2. Kc3?!, 2...b4+ will be check, so there's one more character you have to write on your scoresheet compared to the 2...Kc5 variation. If low on time, this wastefulness could cost you the game!

    • @SpaceCadet4Jesus
      @SpaceCadet4Jesus 7 лет назад +2

      Uerdue You are referring to the "+" you mark on the scoresheet? If so, leave it out. And if you are really low on time, leave the last two or three moves off the scoresheet and fill them in immediately after the game ends.
