I think her video is the reason why RUclips just suggested this video to me. I am so glad she made this video because I think more dress makers need to expose the fact that these sites are using stolen pictures and making knockoffs.
They seem to have a habit of stealing photos of expensive dresses and making cheap knockoffs. I did a quick search on google and got so many results of people complaining about their private photos ending up on these sites.

Totally agree that the aliexpress gown is a very good costume for the price, and its a shame that they did not use pictures of that gown, instead of using pictures of your gown, which is a totally different beast.

The whole design is hers - down to fabric and color choices. They ripped ALL of it, INCLUDING using her photos to lie to their customers about quality. They stole her design, and made theirs off her videos and photos, only cutting corners everywhere and never bothering to ask her or credit her with the design or even inspiration. It’s not the first time they’ve done this - Bernadette Banner is another one who bought the gown they made off her gown, using her photos and she also did a deconstruction showing exactly what differences are between them. They have done it to at least three creators that I follow, so apparently they do it all the time.

@@-Reagan That's why people don't like the Chinese industry, it falsifies everything, even honey... you now those nice calligraphy brush sets one could buy grossly overpriced at Amazon's? they are usually constructed with certain percentage of synthetic hair that resembles "wolf hair". Even their shit can be counterfeit, their authentic stuff, usually reproductions and antiques tend to appear in flea markets together with the counterfeits for that very reason.

I think the same is true of their budget costumes. I bought one for $30 knowing full well that I wasn't buying the fancy high quality costume in the pictures ... but it would have been nice to see what I was really going to get. I was happy with the item I did get ... it was in fact a $30 item. But there are probably buyers who get mad if they expect what was advertised.

I have to mention the "feel factor", which is that wearing one of your gowns makes you feel like a true Queen! I know from experience you need ladies in waiting to dress in and wear one of your gowns and that alone not least the gorgeous fabrics and lacing and attention to detail makes you feel beautiful.

Thank you ☺️ Unfortunately it’s difficult to impart on a short video the feel and major difference in weight, construction and fit of a proper historic gown. I hope however, it’s enough for people to realise you get what you pay for and they’ll sadly be disappointed if you expect to get a historically accurate gown for £130! ☺️💕

I can easily believe that. I have a hand-made renaissance gown for reenactments and while it is aiming to represent a lower class person (meaning it's made from linen, as it is mostly for summer and doesn't have any jewelry, also obviously the style it's different since it's aiming for early 1500s Germany) but even then. It is tailored to me by me with a nice linen fabric. If I factor in work hours it's the most expensive item of clothing I own and I must say I can feel that. So I can only imagine what it must be like to wear something made with truly fancy fabrics. (Maybe some day, but as it is right now, my poor student bank account will not allow for buying 5m of the 60€ reproduction brocade of my dreams :/ )

Thank you for this video, I was really looking forward to it. I'm actually surprised at the quality of the AliExpress gown as I was expecting a disaster. It looks decent and perfectly passable for a Halloween or costume party. Clearly, it will not last long and will not afford the wearer the experience of a true or near true Tudor gown, but could still be fun to wear. I love that you were more than fair in your comparison; you are gracious and kind. It really is too bad the shop decided to use dishonest means to make their sale. Your work is divine and it would be a dream to own and wear your work! Every dress you make looks sumptuous and so very beautiful! I would love videos on how you got into your craft, how long it took to perfect each part of your dress, what errors have you gotten past and are there any dream dresses you still hope to make.

It's terrible to know one's works are being copied. Here in Lima, Peru, I make my living designing and constructing ballet tutus and there are awful persons who copy rudely my works. They use to be moms of my clients' classmates. I can't stop that since people here love to get things cheaper in spite of bad quality (no hand sewing, no boning, no gauged pleats, etc).

You are a very fair and just person. While I was being up in arms over the cheap knock off and having to admit it did look 'all right, I guess', I had the thought that a customer choosing your beautifully put together magnificent historical gowns is probably never going to purchase the knock-off and visa versa, so you would not lose out on custom. At $220 AUD for the knockoff - and knowing the knock-off will no doubt fall apart within three wears - I'd thinking it better to shop quality for a gown which will last practically a lifetime in comparison.

Honestly, if I were attending a costume party, or appearing in a community theater production, I would not want to wear, or be responsible for a gown that took hundreds of hours and thousands of dollars to construct. Also totally agree that it's not only unethical for them to use your photos, but also foolish. More people would trust the site if they could see the actual product. I know nothing about historical gowns (or any fancy dresses) nor did I have a prior interest so I wasn’t sure why RUclips recommended your video but I’m glad I watched. Turns out I found the dress making/construction aspect quite fascinating. I did not realize how many separate pieces were used to create the final look. For example, I was surprised that the front panel of your dress was covering up the lacing and that part of the sleeve is removable. The use of Velcro and the metal eyelets in your gown certainly is an understandable financial choice for a rental gown. Until I got into historical sewing and learned more about the undergarments and realized that a lot of people are still going to be disappointed with their $130 if they don’t know that they’re going to also need a separate corset and a separate bum roll and a separate hoop to give it even anything remotely historical. Otherwise it’s just gonna be that dress hanging like a sack down the front of the person.

It’s too bad that they didn’t do a tie up in the back- seems that it would have made it easier for more sizes and more authentic but what do I know. I thought that was extremely fair of an assessment and comparison which I much appreciate. Can’t wait to look at all the other videos from your channel- SUBSCRIBED!

I agree, the AliExpress gown would have appeared to be more authentic if it had lacing up the back. However Lacing is a much more labour intensive and expensive way to fasten and add to a gown, so I expect they used a zipper for cost saving. Thank you for commenting and subscribing ☺️💕

I think the eyelets and velcro are fabulous ideas because they're not visible, so they add to the convenience without sacrificing the appearance overall. In fact, I'm sure Tudor folks would have been all over them if they were newly invented! (not so much if we give it a few decades if it gets seen as "cheap," but if it was the newest expensive thing and it made textiles more durable and easier to get on and off quickly, I'm sure that would have been appreciated).

Thank you for this comparison. It's amazing to see and hear about the details up close. Speaking of boning, what kind do you use on your gowns? I know some designers use plastic while others use spring steel. I hope to commission a beautiful gown from you someday!

    • @tudorroyaltyexperience

Hi, Thank you, I use plastic artificial whalebone as they would have used whalebone or reeds. However if a customer asks me to use spring steel in a commissioned gown, I’m more than happy to, although due to how much is used in the bodice, it may actually be too stiff with steel. Hope that helps ☺️💕

That's so smart, fix the pearls to the gown to look like pins and use Velcro on the inside. I actually don't know why this isn't common in more recreation gowns, if they had Velcro back then they DEFINITELY would've used it lol

    Hello. I sympathise totally! :_((
My design and performance world is different to yours, but I'm in the same boat as you ....ali-express use pictures of my work to sell naff copies. Maddening! They really are naff, clumsy and technically simplified beyond belief. It wouldn't matter but for the fact that there are a few people working in competition with me and my stuff who use the cheap Chinese factory copies ... so that people come to me assuming I'm using a cheap Chinese product rather than a sophisticated artisan one-off. In other words, the whole concept and possibility of quality flies out of the window.

Or me. I’ll try to make it myself if I REALLY wanted something but can’t afford it.

I had to laugh. When I did Victorian re-enacting, we used velcro any place it didn't show for ease of getting in and out of the dresses. No one sees it, so who cares? When you are dealing with a big bustle and huge petticoats, no one wants to be fighting to find a hook and eye on a waistband. Not to mention the if you gain or lose some weight, the velcro is is adjustable where the hook and eye is not. The aliexpress gown you show here is a very nice costume piece. Much better than I would have expected.

    • @tudorroyaltyexperience
      @tudorroyaltyexperience  2 года назад

It really wouldn’t be practical for me to pin all my ladies on the Tudor Royalty Experience days. I tried hook and eyes too, but like you said, they’re not adjustable. So ye olde Velcro was deployed 🤣. Glad I’m not the only one who sees no point in struggling needlessly. I agree the costume was nicer looking than expected but felt awful 😣💕

That’s what I think. It’s a shame as the actual stitching and workmanship is very good. So a testament to the person who made it. That’s what’s frustrating as it stands on it’s own as a very wearable costume, so they didn’t need to use my pictures ☺️💕
