I think the reason you got crushed at the end was bodyguards. In this case, the AI used bodyguards against you - the extra units aren’t displayed in the top panel (I guess because they aren’t permanent) like in 35:39, but you can see them in the tooltip like in 35:33. I think the ferrymen have Warding, which counters your elite units? Edit: lol, i just noticed you already posted ep 3 😬 keep it up, this series rocks!
Regarding your comments on learning how units work and how to counter them, I recommend the Skirmish battles! They’re fun and quick puzzles where you figure out the counters for different unit combos
Don't forget to choose who fights and who reinforces. Make sure you start battle with the units and formations you actually want. Don't forget to get artifacts to feed to the temple. Swapping armies or using bodyguards might help at least one of your other heroes level (like the dragonking). Mercenaries might help bolster your forces. Kamikaze bodyguard heroes might soften enemies up (don't they have their own mana pool too?).
Thank you, these pointers sound extremely helpful. I'm aware that I can swap reinforces before the battle starts but I gotta admit I haven't even tried yet to use it for real. Thanks for nudging me there again, now that I understand more about the game I might actually have some ideas which units I wanna use when. When I started out this game simply overwhelmed me with it's sheer amount of different units.
Simple and quick: Whenever you go into combat with a hero that has this skill the game checks your strongest army. Then this hero receives a certein % of that strongest army for free into his battle as "free summons" when you start out. Pretty OP, I haven't started yet to exploit it for real, but I think this will start with the next video or match! :D

You might need to increase your summoning skill as well.
