You shouldn't pasteurise milk for the baby goats, they need the raw milk to develop properly.
You did a very nice job on this video, but WHY would they want to kill the fresh milk for the kids? Fresh milk has all the enzymes needed to digest it... that gets destroyed when pasturized. My understanding is that with cows, the calves will die on store bought milk (pasturized/homogonized).
I don't understand either.
Family is Arizona Mormons, also me and the wife are peppers, starting a nubian, boar ranch, thank our lord you guys are sharing!, we will keep in touch with your vids, they are such a help!. Those finger feeder buckets are awesome guys! Going steal that thanks!.
As I mentioned in the video if you have ever had free range fed goat's milk or cheese it will taste very strong. And if you allow the male goats to be with the nannies the milk will be very strong tasting. This family does it right. The feed their goats oats and sprouted grains and keep the males away. The milk I drank from these goats was amazing. Much better than cows milk.
No idea why they'd pasteurize the milk. Not all bacteria is bad.
+Mate2Frio You find people with the weirdest ideas online...
Great question. I didn't ask him. But it certainly is more work for him to do it this way so there must be a good reason.
I'm going to do more research on feeding animals sprouted grains. Thanks for the video! I would echo the comments above, I would drink raw milk rather than pasteurized.
Most of the people are talking about the kids not the humans. The kids need the good bacteria present. Raw milk is not intended for anything other than a goat and what is in that Raw milk can possibly kill you. Personally I would play it safe and pasteurize.
Rachel C Raw milk for young goats at that. For all the comments about raw milk, and there are real benefits, people tend to forget about the drawbacks. I guess it's hard to convince people in either camp to change their mind as they really think they're on to something.
***** There are things that can possibly kill you if you drink contaminated raw milk (unclean goat etc). You are not a kid so you don't have the same resistance. There is benefits for raw consumption but the consequences can be deadly.
Do you know what the most deadly food is? PASTEURIZED milk...not raw milk. Please, do your research. Raw milk is SO HEALTHY. Pasteurized milk putrefies and goes bad. RAW MILK ferments and turns into cheese over time. Look into it. Raw milk is so healing. Pasteurized milk is dead food.
Goat meat is great too! Wow! Looks like getting nubian goats is the way to go if you want fresh milk everyday instead of dealing with cows which are more expensive to feed. Thanks for sharing.
The vast majority of bacteria in milk (and in general) are either benign or beneficial. I would love to hear you explain why you would pasteurize the milk other than to "kill bacteria". That make no sense at all...
And it takes only one form of bacteria to kill or sicken livestock.
Pelican1984 so human mothers should pasteurize their milk as well? Nonsense. Pasteurizing the goat kids milk is ridiculous.
Thank you for the blessing. I agree the milk I drank was better tasting than any cows milk I have drank. And I have drank cows milk fresh from the cow with cream sitting on the top. This was great milk.
Outstanding! Thank you so much. Please say Thank you to the family that let you share this with us, I am so thankful. Beautiful set up, and great presentation.
I grew up on a dairy farm and still help when needed. I've also worked on several other farms: beef, Meat and Dariy goat and seed corn. This is a lot of work for a few gallons of milk. I say get a bred jersey cow They Are THe Best for off grid small, calm, and rich milk. goats are a genuine pain in the ass no matter what.
Just found your channel, Great information I am sure it will help a lot of people. We started ours to help as well. And hope to help out people starting with goats and homesteading
Thank you so much for sharing with us. I enjoyed this video, it was good and I learned many things. Blessings to you and your family and the family who is sharing their lifestyle with us all !
i like that invention for feeding the baby goats milk. it is very cool
Thanks for sharing. Loved the plant system its the first time I had seen one like that
I didn't ask them but he said it was to make sure the kids didn't get sick. It also maybe a state or federal regulation. I'm not sure.
We discussed that but I honestly don't remember. But I believe they are when they are not feeding the goat kids the milk.
Probably to get the most amount of milk from the does. I like the idea of letting the kids nurse from the does during the day and separating at night
The family drinks the milk but while there are goat kids they give most of it back to the goat kids so they grow up healthy. After 5 months the goat kids are weaned off milk and the family can use it all.
We have New Zealand Kikos and we get two quarts of milk per day, one in the morning and one in the evening. We feed the first two days to the kids to give them all of the colostrum they need and then we keep half from us after that. Of course, Kiko is a meat bread and Nubian is a milk breed but aside from quantities the remaining traits are identical. Thanks
it defeats to purpose if it's pasteurized
I don't know. I didn't ask. I can find out if you really want to know.
I was raised on goats milk, we had 4 milk goats. I am also curious on why you need to pasteurize, we didn't. We would milk, feed the kids the warm milk and take the rest back to the house. The milk was then strained through cheese cloth and put in the fridge. We also didn't let them out to pasture at it affects the taste, fed them chopped alfalfa and then grain at each milking.
This guy has an awesome set up!
If they're selling it it is required in some states. In Florida, raw milk can only be sold for pet consumption.
Why give Pasteurized milk back to the goats?
+Zachary Harms When they have too much pasturized milk they don't want to waste it so they give it to the young goats. This also ensures the goats don't get sick.
+LDSPrepper The goats are meant to drink raw milk.. That's natures plan. You pasteurise it, and it loses nutritional value. I think he should be thrown in jail for giving his baby goats heat treated milk. Where are the authorities? Surely this is a case of animal mistreatment.
+Peter Stone Pasteurized milk fed to kids prevents CAE, a serious disease in goats.
It's a required practice to have a Certified CAE-free herd.
You feed them pasteurized milk because there is something in the milk that will infect the goat and cause the mother to produce less milk, if this practice is use be all goat farmers we can eliminate this disease for future generations of goats. Then we can allow the mother to nurse the kid.
+Larry Dunn
only some goats have this bacteria
I didn't know that. How is pasteurized milk dangerous? Please be specific.
3-1/2 gallons per day for 6 full grown female goats. That's fine. The financial references seem a little misguided. It's hard to make a sales pitch on the economics when even free range goats need mineral blocks and worming, plus some shelter. Getting the goat's milk is time intensive, and keeping them penned and convenient costs a lot more on feed. At most, a gallon can't be worth more than about $5. If you're spending an hour a day and $5+ food/medicine you're getting at best a $10 value per day (which is generous, and just barely more than minimum wage) which doesn't take into account initial animal costs or buildings and fences. Perhaps potential government subsidies make it worth it, not sure if available or true...
Now, if the sales pitch is that goats can really keep an unruly small farm looking manageable, that is something I support. Got to let them roam though as buying feed and keeping them penned up defeats the purpose. Another reason to keep goats is they can be one small part of an overall lifestyle choice. I believe the choice isn't intended so much as a way to make money as much as it is to get by in what's considered a more wholesome lifestyle (by some).
Why pasteurized the milk that you're just going to give to babies anyway?
We had to do this with our goats because there was a disease the mother's could pass to their babies through the milk if it wasn't pasteurized. If the baby wasn't passed the disease through the milk, then the line would be clean for the next generation and the next babies could nurse.
They have to say that about pasturizing cause the officials will be on them like stink. Unpasteurized nubian milk is the best.
Makes sense, needing to be "in compliance" so they don't shut you down.
Some producers put on the label "for animal use only" and that lets them off the hook.
You do not have to pasturize the milk to feed the kids unless your does are CAE positive. And Nubians have a naturally sweet milk. I breed and raise nubians. Have done so for many years. I don't feed alfalfa and when I milk I can smell the sweetness of the cream in the bucket.
A good doe should milk at least a gallon a day. With all they're being fed they should give more..
I agree Amy!
Why don't the goats just forage? It all seems rather complicated. It doesn't seen very homesteady.
+FlyOverZone Not sure why it doesn't seem very homesteady to you.
I grew up on dairy farm and drank raw cows milk for 18 years. But raw milk (from cows or goats) can contain Salmonella, E. coli, and Listeria among other things, so best to be safe and pasturize.
In nature, baby animals directly drink the milk from their moms without going though the pasteurization process. They don't get sick.
This family wants to keep their privacy so I will not be sharing what state they are in other than they are in the state of preparedness, as we all should be.
The CDC, USDA, & many universities have abundant scientifically verified reasons to pasteurize milk. The advocates of drinking raw milk base their arguments on hearsay and personal "experience", not on scientifically collected & rigorously peer reviewed data. Food poisonings occur today in the US from consuming unpasteurized milk products. I am not opposed to people having the choice to drink milk raw. I am opposed to people touting unproven benefits of a potentially dangerous product.
Pasturizing is for mainly when you sell the milk. If your legal to do so.
Probably to maintain their udders and the possibility that the kids would damage the mothers udders. Especially if they are show goats.
nice ..i prefer mutton from goats..milk from cow..and manure from cow and goats for vermicompost etc..
Do any of your contacts keep milk sheep? If so, what are the benefits they see over goats?
This was great! Loved the baby goats or kid, so cute :)
Loving this series LDS... more please :D
We don't pasteurize any of the milk to our goats, nature does not require that, just clean the equipment and the teat before you milk them. Also it is not necessary to separate the males from the lactating females for flavor, that is just silly. There is no difference in taste or odor from the nannies milk when kept together or separate from males. We use a milking machine to milk our nannies rather than manually. We feed our goats alfalfa as well and the milk and cheese is very good
I really would like to know. I've been looking at different systems and I like the look of this one. The others have troughs that are so large, I'd never be able to use all the fodder before it went bad.
So if you get goats your probably have to turn a lot of it into cheese to not waste it?
Thank you this was a wonderful video !!!
Is there anywhere I can learn about that awesome sprouting system?
WHAT A GREAT VIDEO!
Can i ask a question?how many kilos per day do you give hydroponic fodder to the goats.....?kilo per goat?
if you have to keep the animals penned away from their young and never let them outside to graze just to get tasty milk.. i would rather have a cow. No offence, just doesnt seem as kind, as sustainable, or frankly, as easy heh. Plus i heard, and this might be incorrect, that it is hard to separate goats milk for making butter and cream, and that is a BIG reason for having a dairy animal, in my opinion. Also totally do not get the whole pasteurizing milk for the goat kids, just not natural and the kids are missing out on vital antibodies, enzymes, and digestive bacteria. ::shakes head::
pasteurized milk is way better for them being that it keeps them from getting many diseases.
Jacob Brunberg that makes absolutely NO sense. God/Nature/Evolution, whatever, deems that the BEST way for any mammal to feed its young is straight from the teat, if whatever was in the milk in the teat was unhealthy, or unbeneficial to the young, IT WOULDNT BE IN THERE. Pasturization kills many beneficial enzymes and bacteria, along with any pathogens that can ONLY be contaminants from the milking process itself, since milk IN the goat is highly unlikely to be diseased, unless the GOAT is diseased, in which case, why is it still in the population and why are you wanting to drink diseased, dead milk? Doesnt make a bit of sense to me. Pasturization for human drinking, ok, cause it has to be removed from the mother goat for a human to drink it, and that process can introduce pathogens... (i know I certainly would not drink directly from the teat anyway lol) but for her kids??? Illogical. They should get it straight from the mom.
***** goats can have bacteria from feces on their udders. though it is not very necessary to pasteurize milk, it dosent destroy health benefits and it can keep people and calfs/kids from getting sick.
You are right goats are browsers so they should be out in the woods browsing but they do do well on hay and have been for decades. To get milk for humans all animal young are kept away from their mothers. Yes cream in goats milk is hard to separate but that is because goats milk is almost like homogenized the milk particles are smaller and easier for most humans to digest.
Well done great info. Thanks
We have 22 acres, hoping that is enough land to produce a good income, thanks again
We are lds also and we plan on homesteading but we have no clue well maybe a little clue what we are doing. Helpful hints?
can you show a video on how to make it
Is the family also making cheese with the goat milk?
What fodder system are they using?
what goat is better for mik
It depends on what you are looking for. Nubian Goats have the highest butterfat and protein content in their milk but not nearly the production per day as a Saanen.
Here's a good jumping off point www.ansc.purdue.edu/goat/factsheet/breeds.htm
Why do they pasteurize it?
Anytime you're dealing with milk, animal or human, as the offspring reduce their intake the mother adjusts. So, not as much is produced. By milking you keep the production higher. I'm not getting the pasteurization and feed back thing either. Makes no sense. Mother's milk, any milk is full of good things for their offspring and doesn't need to be monkeyed with. Plus, it's adding unnecessary work IMHO. But, honestly if it works for them so be it. Clean goat farm though, that's a plus.
How does goat's milk compare to cow's milk?
Goat milk does contain lactose.
ho to buy this
The baby goats needs the lactobacilli in the raw milk from their mother... that's maybe why the one little guy isn't doing so well!!!! We wouldn't pasteurize breast milk for our babies would we?
That would be a concern early in the goat's life, but probably not after the first few weeks, and the goat in question was 4 months old. Goats have lots of reasons for not doing so well such as: worms, the runs, insufficient minerals, pink eye and injuries. My guess is the little feller had a bout of the worms, and they put some dewormer on his gums.
Because If the kids nurse off the does, then the does won't have enough milk for the people. This way they can control how much the kids are eating and not waste milk. Also hand-fed kids are friendlier than if they were raised by their moms.
That doesn't make sense. Why pasturize when they drink it raw naturally.
I was done with the video as soon as I heard “we pasteurize the milk“. Why would you do that?? They drink it from their mother raw and with all the enzymes and good bacteria intact. Why not let them just drink from their mother and keep them apart for a certain time so you can milk them. That’s what most people do. I came here to learn, but I definitely will look elsewhere
How far away do they keep the males from the females
Just so they can't get with each other...
BAAAA!! 1:08. Hahaha! So cool :-)
5:50 We all know he loves it....
Chance favors the prepared mind...
To be more to the point, I have observed that the raw milk supporters make dogmatic claims of the benefits of raw milk, but lack proof of their claims. I have yet to see a peer reviewed study in their support. I don’t doubt that some of the claims maybe true, but it is an awful responsibility to encourage others to drink raw milk, which may not be pathogen free, based on a belief of benefit instead of facts. And with raw milk poisonings on the rise the last 5 years, the risks can't be denied
Would the dairy lobby PAY for a peer reviewed study of the benefits or raw milk? They fight tooth and nail to get all raw dairy operations closed. They do not want it so why would they pay for a study? And WHO WOULD PUBLISH IT? Follow the money trail. Do your own research. It's the same as asking a pharmaceutical company, which happen to own and/or control ALL of the peer-reviewed journals, to start doing studies on HERBS AS MEDICINE. They'd never do it as it takes money out of their pockets. Seriously, follow the money trail.
Did you know there's been a CURE FOR CANCER for almost 100 years? Watch The Gerson Miracle, The Beautiful Truth and Dying to Have Known here on YT. RESEARCH. You ARE being lied to about your health and what's good for you.
Why not just let the kids nurse on the nannies?
you’ll find keeping Nubian goats VERY LOUD
So aren't they supposed to have the milk the way it is from momma? Like God intended?
The milk probably should be pasteurized for human kids, but not for goat kids.
why feed you kids that. just move them over to isomil formula or non dairy creamer.
It makes me sad that they pasteurize the milk before feeding it back to the kids. I don't understand the reasons for that. You say several times that it is to keep the kids from getting any diseases, why would the raw milk carry disease? Pasteurization kills vital bacterial that help kids thrive. If this is how they choose to keep their goats, and it works for them, that's great, but it almost seems as though you are showing that pasteurizing is the only way to nipple feed kids, not true!
1/2 a gallon a day is bad for the Nubian breed of goats they should produce more like 1 gallon of milk or 3/4th gallon close to a gallon every day. Don't get me wrong but I don't like Nubians they are loud nasty tempered goats that don't produce enough to keep around.
I love my Swiss alpine doe and my LAMANCHA buckling.
the buckling's mother produced about 1 1/2 gallons of milk every day.
the Swiss alpine's mom produced 1 gallon and that wasn't even at her peek of milking.
muscovy duck&chicken breeder Very interesting. But, what does one do with so much milk? If you have a small family and only use about 1/2 gallon every 2-3 days, it seems like in a very short time you will run out of room if you're producing 1 - 1 1/2 gallons per day. Do you give milk away? Just curious.
Robin Dunn we are a family of 3 but we go through milk every week so a gallon and 1/2 isn't really that much for us. I also feed my unused goats milk to my 3 400lb pigs 2 girls that are pregnant they love the milk in there feed.
I have had a very bad experience with Nubian goats but I guess I should have gotten babies instead of in milk full grown goats.
With a high butter-fat milk, you use a cream separator and make butter with the cream, and cheese, and yogurt and so on. Some people, traditionally, gave the excess milk to pigs and chickens.
We used to freeze the excess milk in one gallon plastic jugs. When thawed you might not want to use it for drinking instead of fresh but it works fine for cooking, baking and so forth.
You didn't talk about cows. You should rename the video.
This is all a bit silly.
Do not pasteurize the milk (even for human consumption, if you're satisfied that your animals are healthy).
And, don't feed grain to animals. Oats .... not smart.
Alfalfa ... good.
I can't understand why you are deleting comments that are critical of you or you're video? Isn't that the point of comments- to get people's reaction, be a man and stop censoring people who don't agree with you -argue the toss if you're up to it. If not why bother making videos at all?
This is all so insane.
They keep the milk for the human kids? Or goat kids? haha
why don't you shear the goats n use the fur to make coats n shoes for the goats? gratuitous move
How not to raise goats in one complete video.
disgusting...
+mcr is life Ⓥ why disgusting?
Craneo Bones you don't see anything wrong with this video .-. ??

+OJ Boreland Pasteurizing the milk to give back to the goats is just plain wrong. Fine for delicate humans, but seems like a recipe for goats with underdeveloped immune systems.
