The wind chimes are not a sound effect. They're being played by all the mallet players in the front ensemble. I got to watch this show a lot since they stayed in my city for a month so me and my friends would go and watch their run throughs often.
Fun Fact: the wind chimes at the beginning are not sampled! The 5 marimba players each have a set of cluster chimes that we do a gentle shimmer with at the beginning of the show 🤘 Thank you so much for taking a look at our production! I’ve thought about the differences between the two from a non drummer’s perspective and listening to the source material a bit, and I think that Rennick’s arrangements are definitely primarily written with musicality in mind, and Ferguson is definitely more energetic and showy. I actually like the Ferguson’s arrangement of the second movement better than Rennick’s because it felt like it captured more of the raw, chaotic energy in the background of much of the source material (Harmonius Part 3: Wild Nights). I still like the 03 front ensemble better for the most part, but I think that Ferguson was trying to strike a balance between doing his own thing and trying to stay loyal to the original in that department, which felt a bit awkward at parts to me.
Yeah it would be soo cool!!! But like he said at the start of the video, these shows are money to dci lol. I'm sure if he posted a video reacting to an unofficial high quality show, he'd get annihilated by DCI. But maybe if he did shows from past seasons! That'd be sweet!

Before Phantom left to go on tour, they did a pretty awesome clinic with all 5 of the highschools in our school corporation here. At the end of the day, all of the wind players went onto the field with Phantom and played their opener. It was absolutely fantastic and there is a decent quality video of it. Someone has a ton of photos and videos that we compiled from that day. I personally have a few photos and short videos of the front ensemble clinic where we placed all of the highschool mallets into the Phantom line and had almost 40 keyboard lined up. It was a pretty epic day.
I actually got to see this in person and it was awesome. I'll admit, it was my first dci competition I've been to but it was still amazing. They were my favorite that night.

We have 12 contras, which I believe is standard. And there’s no defined story for the show, that we’ve been told at least, it’s just about contrast and tension between different segments of the show
Hopefully they can fix the dreadful brass that about ruined the 2003 CDs. Ouch that was painful to listen to. Definitely the worst hornline in the top 12 in 2003. Phantom staff, please teach your horn players to play in tune when trying to raise the volume. When they hit triple forte, it was one of the worst sounds ever. And too bad they don't have enough time this year to come up with better drill. They almost fell out of finals in 2019, this show would barely keep them in this year if it were being judged and all the corps were on the field performing.
I was at this show, my son is a euphonium this year in Phantom, having the time of his life. They are outstanding, I was in tears before it was over. Nice to see all the love for these kids!!

That was a crazy show. Stadium was poorly designed and had little seating, and the show sold out. They had to start putting people on the backside (as you can see in the video).
Glad other people noticed the extra loud pit. Was wondering if it’s as noticeably loud for a live spectator, or maybe just the way it was recorded? ie DCI finals ‘95 & ‘96 audio, way too much front cymbals drowning out the entire ensemble. Flo Marching still many levels above fans with iPhone recordings.

They have a follow-up tribute to arthritic zebra herders, in D minor, written in 13/8 time. Wonderful 👍

15 is right around average size of a DCI contra section it's usually either 12 or 16 but since this is a wonky season the size of sections across corps is a lot less standardized. The Blue Stars this year have a massive 20 member section which I think is really cool and of course smaller less popular corps have less members overall.

In regards to the color guard at the end....at one point it was tradition, I believe, for at least one guard member to constantly be moving from the moment they step on the field til the end. They may still do it.. In this particular circumstance they are recreating what the guard member did at the end of their 2003 show. Do more of these please with transcripts. That was nice to see.
Blue Knights have put out some amazing shows over the years. Their 2002 and 2006 shows are some of my favorite musical moments ever. No one plays Shostakovich like BK.

@@txblades1 Sadly Phantom and Madison just haven't been the same the last decade. Phantom got lucky winning in 2008 with what should have been a 3rd of 4th place show. But the next year(2009) they dropped from 3rd to 7th, and have never really been in the hunt for a medal since.

But all the old staff from ‘03-‘13 are back and it’s clear the corps is making the turn back to the PR standard.
@@declandougan7243 It is not incredibly uncommon for high schools to do this...back in 2012 my high school performed this show, nearly exactly the same music as the original in 2003. All the same brass runs well... The show is incredibly difficult for a brass section though...if not for anything else but the incredible endurance it takes to pull this off...almost no breaks at all. The trumpets in particular are belting the ENTIRE show. Too difficult for high school if you ask me. (Search Cy Woods Band 2012 if youd like to listen to a high school do it)

Most I’ve seen in a competition DCI hornline has been 20 contras (2010 Madison). Makes for incredible boom.

My humble opinion : corps who really upped their game in 2021- Phantom and Boston.
Corps who possibly regret what they did in 2021: SCV and BD.

No, it's not really a PR guard thing. We did it in 2003 as a nod to the 1993 ending in where s does never ending drop spins.

@@declandougan7243 It is not incredibly uncommon for high schools to do this...back in 2012 my high school performed this show, nearly exactly the same music as the original in 2003. All the same brass runs well...
The show is incredibly difficult for a brass section though...if not for anything else but the incredible endurance it takes to pull this off...almost no breaks at all. The trumpets in particular are belting the ENTIRE show. Too difficult for high school if you ask me.

Don’t lean back with your drums on. It’ll make your back feel better for a moment but it’s bad for it and will make your back hurt more in the long run

Make sure to watch a TON of technique videos ASAP! Starting with proper technique is a million times easier than fixing bad technique!
