It's tough but possible; Valkyries have the third largest spellcasting penalty in the game (behind Barbarians and Cavemen). To compensate, you'll need a Robe, high wisdom, reasonably high level (at least 12, preferably at least 15), and no metallic body armor--dragon scale mail does fine. Then you should be able to cast some spells, though probably not anything higher than a level 3 spell. All of this is possible, but it's normally not until fairly late in the game that you have the ability to have all of this.
Ok. This is epic. And great commentary/questions. Gives me a new perspective on the game, should be helpful. How many years have I been playing this game on and off? Perhaps one day I’ll ascend lol!
I know, right? I'm working on a D&D module based on Nethack and this video helped me get an idea of the steps you need to win the game and how my players would need to do them. (Obviously the final module will be way smaller than the actual game, probably 5-10 levels instead of 50).
