As a totally biased Aussie, this race was just painful. McLaren are still strategising like they're underdogs who aren't consistently fighting for wins. Boxing Lando early to protect from ghost threats behind created an unnecessary controversy that could've been entirely avoided, and would've let the fans enjoy either a deserved Oscar first win on merit or a killer fightback from Lando. My theory is that McLaren are a year ahead of where they expected to be in terms of performance, weren't prepared for the Red Bull dropoff, were expecting the title fight next year, and have been caught napping. We're just seeing the growing pains of a team learning to how to win a championship (but far out they need to get it together ASAP as I can't think of many faster ways to alienate not only the fanbase, but their two excellent drivers as well)
Probably the most balanced opinion I've seen on this. McLaren let both Oscar and Lando down in Hungary and have made their lives difficult going forward.
No blame should be placed on Lando or Piatsri. McLaren is the one who decided to put Lando first. And asking to switch drivers with a 6 second gap is crazy
@@Duval-In-The-Wallthey’re still acting too cautious. They need to throw their weight around and be arrogant because they have the best race car currently. Don’t worry about others on track as they weren’t a big enough threat
Absolutely and it’s so much more painful because there was nothing he could do and he should’ve been in the points. No accountability from VCARB and it doesn’t help when Ricciardo’s performances are already being undermined.
Melbourne native here. Mclaren could've EASILY made the situation drama-free by just saying to Lando after the pitstop "if you let Oscar past and re-establishthe order, you can race him" Then the horrible strategies would've been forgotten, and Lando probably would've won anyway
Exactly this, but I think McLaren were so desperate for their drivers NOT to race Ironically enough if 3rd place was close to them there is no way in HELL they would thought about swapping
Would Lando be quicker to return the lead if the pit wall straight up said "Hey, listen, we screwed Oscar over with our shit strategy, please let him pass"
They literally screwed over Lando with their shit strategy ever since miami. Canada they let him get caught by the safety car and then tried overcutting on a track that is known for its undercut. Spain, they messed up the strategy by extending the stints. Silverstone, they screwed him by putting him on the wrong tyres and a lap too late. Yeah, sucked what they did with oscar, taking away a podium... But Lando lost out on 6 wins due to poor strategy, and another one because Oscar doesn't understand what it means to support your teammate at the start for the sprint, and Crashstappen being the dirty driver he always was. Lando is getting screwed over a lot more here. Oscar is in his second season, he doesn't have the race pace yet. I get that he wants to play with the big boys, but there will be better opportunities, when your antics don't screw over your teammate, a teammate that has gifted you 2 wins now already
McLaren stuffed it, and neither driver comes out of this race happy. Oscar's great drive and deserved win is completely overshadowed, and Lando was forced to endure the torture of giving up a win. Complete failure on the team side, when they should be celebrating a great 1-2. It was harrowing to watch.
The strategy for Danny Ric cost the team the possibility of double points. If they wanted to pit him so early like the teams on softs then they should have started him on softs. He could've gone longer on mediums. His pace was good today.
@@Duval-In-The-Wall Honestly I'm amazed he made it back up to P12 with how screwed over he was by the team. For a long time I thought he'd finish like P17-P18. It was a lowkey impressive drive to be able to recover like that.
Or tell him to hold position at the start. Let lando concentrate on max, not having to worry about two people behind. Oscar was better for 400 meters at the start, Lando was better for Friday, Saturday and every lap afterwards. McLaren needs to learn that a race is not a sprint that should be decided over 400 meters. They did the same to DC back in 1997 and it haunts him to this day. That's not how you help your #1 get more confident when he's the one under pressure. No one has any expectations of Oscar yet, he's the rookie, he doesn't have to meet anyone's expecations. Of course he's gonna be calmer at the start. They need to get Lando ready for 2025, give him his shot at the WDC and then they can let oscar have his go at playing with the big boys
I agree with you (and Rosberg if you saw his comment to Stella post race) that McLaren should have told Lando to give the position back immediately and not whenever he wants. However, if you pit Lando first and then 2 laps later make him lose 3-4 seconds, why pit him first at all? How does losing both your cars 3-4 seconds (Oscar because he's undercut and Lando because he waits on track) protect from the undercut? If you have time to do that, you weren't in danger of being undercut by Lewis in the first place!
Amen.... Undercut is what, 2 seconds... Lando had 6 seconds... And then they sent piastri around 2 more times.... What the actual fk? Oscar should have pitted when Lando did, and Lando should have gone immediately the next lap... Maybe Lando has a 2-3 second lead over Lewis... Who he had pace on anyway... So so dumb
Exactly. Wasn't the whole point of undercutting to get ahead and pull a gap to lewis/max. But asking him to slow down for oscar throws out the whole purpose of undercutting. At least the least they could do was telling oscar to catch up. Makes no sense at all 😂
@@ChuyR. Mind you they purposely slowed down Lando from lap 5. He wasn't allowed to use full pace for most part of the race. They gave BS excuses to slow him down saying tyre management needed, etc. at the end of the race you could see Lando's tyres which were older and the he pushed hard on was still better than oscar's newer tyres which he actually "tried" to manage and didn't push. Oscars tyres were completely gone. So no, I don't think lewis had the pace to fight McLaren this race, especially not Lando's pace if he fully sent it.
I feel bad for Piastri at the end of the day. You could hear the dejection in his voice over a maiden win like this. It’s one thing if Lando, who has virtually zero incentive in the grand picture to concede, gave up the lead on his own volition. The maiden win would actually mean something and would actually be a big win in terms of team/driver chemistry. But to have the team give these weirdly veiled threats toward him if he didn’t concede throughout the entire last leg makes the win for Piastri feel unearned.
I can understand your point but I think Oscar believes he could have won if given preferential strategy/pitstop calls. He had quite a gap to Lando and that probably would have been maintained if his strategy wasn’t compromised by Lando having to cover off other drivers
It was horrible. I mean it was correct for them to do so because they essentially fucked over Oscars race to cover off the vague possibility of Lewis 6 sec. behind. They should have boxed Oscar when they did Lando then Lando the next lap. Its a bit comical. I'm a McLaren fan and like how did they make a 1-2 and Oscar's first win leave me feeling depressed?
@@savant_spoon_bender Let their drivers race, or give the leader the preferred strategy? Basic stuff mate, obviously the guy SECOND in the championship wants to go fast and chase the win
Honestly McLaren really impressed me this weekend. I did think there was a chance in hell they could deliver a worse strategy than Silverstone but boy did they prove me wrong…
28:48 B A S E D Tommo. Appreciate that you keep things apolitical, but the occasional jab is brilliant. Enjoying the chinwags, looking forward to Belgium!
The fact that they boxed lando to cover HAM was BS, there was no way he was catching up at all. Team strategy made this all awkward and put's lando in a bad spot, if he gives spot back then he's the ultimate teammate , if he doesn't then he does not have that selfish championship DNA which you need to a degree that Michael/Lewis/VER would not give those points away while in 2nd place in championship, when VER finished P5 that's a 7/8 points difference given for free to VER. That was such an awkward podium/cooldown room and post race interviews Nico stirring the pot with his questions lol. McLaren should of pitted Oscar first there is no way, we all could see it that HAM was not a threat to Lando to make him pit first. McLaren strategy made this drama and put lando in a emotional rollercoaster just coming up with every excuse while he's racing ( thinking about Sunday meetings, your going to need the team and Oscar for the championship). Race was a 5, Drama was a 10 with McLaren and VER radio.
I think Lando was foolish to wait to give it back. If he had just given the place back when they first told him, then he could have tried to fight back past Oscar with his faster pace and DRS
I enjoyed the race quite a bit despite the bizarre circumstances. And as a Piastri fan I'd take that win all day long(kind of makes up for previous race or two where he had the chance to do it). Not too fussed about the decision McLaren made, but that's part of the entertainment that F1 has been dishing out this year. Also, two more things - Max's radio antics were absolute F1 gold. And already seven different race winners with just about over half of the season completed - Red Bull interestingly enough now being the only team among the winners not having both their drivers finishing on P1.
I disagree with the Perez clanger drive. It was nothing phenomenal but to qualify 16th and recover to finish 7th is a decent performance after where he's been lately. Massive stretch to call that a clanger drive. If Perez gets that rating then Russell should be there with him since he qualified 17th and they finished the same as the qualified relative to each other, only difference is Russell set the fastest lap of the race to Perez's 4th fastest.
@@LH_447 Clanger is based on the Sunday race and not the whole weekend. Does Checo deserve his seat? No. Did he have a terrible weekend? Yes. Did he have a good Sunday? Yes. So he doesn't deserve clanger drive.
I think the clanger moment was when Max lost his composure and went for the pass on Hamilton. Max also had trouble with the acceptance phase when he tried to keep the place he gained by going off the track on the first lap. Maybe a team psychologist could help with that.
No he didn't. Max got clanger for being 5th in a car that should have been max 3rd. Perez didn't overtake anybody really and benefitted by that ridiculous undercutting that most backmarkers did. He struggled to get yuki and co. In a car that finished easily over 50 sec infront (if not more without max crash probably over 65) of the Racing bulls and Astons so a hole sec per lap....
Currently, McLaren isn't ready for a championship fight, and they know it. Lando may be, but the team isn't, and until they are, this will happen again. Lando needs Oscar to be his wingman and defend against the other drivers and won't get that if he shows he isn't a team player. It's a shit show that put both drivers in a bad situation that could have been avoided by a pit wall that is ready for this fight. Neither driver did anything wrong, and both had an amazing race, and the pit wall taking cues from Ferrari is disheartening
5:33 Tommo has made a good point here, without the radio stuff, the swap would’ve looked like pure match fixing and I don’t think would’ve ever happened
I think it was a lot less to do with "optics" as to why Daniel was pissed off. Not only has the team stiffed him two weekends in a row (they ruined his quali in silverstone) but also towards the end of the race they asked him to fight with Lance to protect Yuki. Lance who was faster by a second per lap due to fresher tyres. Then post race there was no "Sorry we got that one wrong today Daniel" message. Just a "we will review everything". So with everything he had every right to be pissed off with the team. To ask him to do something about Lance for Yuki was just a joke.
Rare opinion I know, but I do think we're looking at a title fight. Red Bull is nowhere, Max is holding on for dear life to that P1. If Lando keeps up this pace, it takes either Piastri/Merc/Ferrari backing him up or one mistake from Max and it's on. McLaren needs work like they are firmly in this battle.
Underrated comment. Driver's title IS ON despite what McLaren seem to believe based on their strategy today. 50 pts between Red Bull and McLaren with half a season left is definitely Title ON. McLaren needs to really pull a finger out now, operationally.
the only reason i can see McLaren doing this so early and based on Wills comment about lando needing the team and oscar for his drivers championship, is if they are focused on securing the constructors championship first then essentially using oscar to hold up max in every race for lando to win the drivers. which is an insane stretch. but considering mclaren could take the constructors lead within 2 races i dont think its unrealistic either. like will said lando has proved his point that he IS the faster driver at mclaren and they shouldnt forget that
With all the Danny ric fans being so outraged and loud, it has overshadowed a good performance by Yuki. The one stop was a crazy idea no one else on the grid tried, he made it work with his fantastic tire management.
I was fuming throughout the whole race. The whole McLaren bullshit, Danny being screwed by his team right at the beginning and Max acting like an annoying brat the whole time. For me its a 2/10. Happy for Oscar but thats about it. I dont wanna think about this race again.
I absolutely disagree with Tommo's take. Even if there is a 1% chance of a drivers championship, McLaren have to take it and chase it down like hungry lions, that's what championship winning teams do. Lando Norris is well ahead of Oscar Piastri in the drivers standings, and he had great pace at the end on the mediums; all this talk about 'slow down' and 'playing the team game' feels like petty corporate think taking over a racing organisation. Also, that 'I'm trying to protect you' comment felt like a veiled threat. Were McLaren going to fire Lando if he didn't give the win back? If Zak Brown has some balls he should clear out the indecisive rot on the pit wall.
I think the main thing is if they want Oscar to listen to team orders in the future they had to do this after screwing him with the strategy. Not that Lando should have listened, but being at war with your teammate helps no one
Perhaps they should, but if that is the case, they should make it clear to their drivers beforehand. If there's an opportunity to get the driver leading the championship ahead of the other, you must always concede. But they clearly don't believe there's a drivers championship to be won, or at least, the chance of winning it doesn't outweigh the internal damage it would do to deny Oscar his maiden win.
@@TommoMcCluskey they seemed like they did this weight measurement after they had already pitted both cars for the final stops and committed to the WDC charge. What a clown show.
The radio messages this race were actually Insane, not only McLaren and Max, but also Albon and of course Alonso. I watched the onboard of Russell and he also had a few words on the radio.
I wish someone would give Danny and Perez some credit lol, they both did great in the race Also I’m loving all these comments arguing with each other 😂
As long as the driver championship win is still mathematically possible, any racing driver will have some hope, even if it is far fetched. You can't blame lando for having a go at it even if he's more than 70 pts behind max, because we're only halfway through the season
If lando were to win with max P2 for every remaining race (I’m not counting sprints), lando would win by 1 point. If it does end up being a title fight, boy it’s going to be close.
As a fan of the team in red I’m genuinely impressed lately that McLaren have been taking things a tier above Ferrari, in getting a 1-2 but still whiffing it somehow. You gotta say, Ron Dennis may be the Most Boring Man Alive but this wouldn’t happen under his McLaren. They’re really lacking that decisive edge they used to have.
As an Aussie Oscar, that ending (as much as it was a little contronversial due to team orders) gave me the most happiness I've ever felt in quite a few years. Love to see Oscar the Grand Prix Winner!
this race rating is harsh for me. Hamilton’s defense of Max in itself brought it to a 5 for me. Add some of the drama, Max-Ham collision and Russell and Perez coming through the field it’s surely atleast a 6
people saying stuff like 'even if there is 1% chance of a WDC norris should always be given priority' Is f*cking absurd, do you guys think Norris is schumacher here & Piastri is Irvine? Secondly Mclaren already HAVE a procedure for how they handle pit stop choices, the leading car gets the priority/first stop, they've been tooting their horns about handling things in this way for a while now. ANY deviations to this team policy in regards to WDC should be handled diplomatically, it's Piastri the guy has literally been a saint & the most chill guy ever. If Lando or the team discussed this with Piastri prior to the race or perhaps during it and not the most clusterf*ck of situations playing out then who would have minded in this situation? Problem is nothing like this was said, norris took the first pit to COVER off lewis (which wasn't even a threat) and protect the 1-2, NOT to leapfrog Piastri and then start gunning for the race win. And then it took the Mclaren team apparently two laps to then pit Piastri & IIRC that pit stop was a bit shite. Saying Lando had more pace too is idiotic, I agree he had last stint pace, it's clear. But what the hell was the point in putting in some stupid demonstration of pace only to finally do the non arsehole thing 2 laps before the end of the race and solidify his 2nd place. Imagine if he had just sorted the order after Mclarens massive blunder, which he himself i hope eventually knew was unfair & a f*ked way of taking first place WDC or no WDC, and afterwards just gone and raced piastri with his last stint pace. And on top of all this piastri is trying to win his first here. There's a healthy line between wanting to absolutely maximise every point you earn for a WDC and being a plain arsehole who would massively hurt your relations with your teammate & team.
Well done McLaren, only you could destroy a maiden win. Here's some advice, prioritise the race leader instead of undercutting them twice. I actually think if they didn't screw oscar all year he would have had a chance to win the WDC this year. Nothing against Lando but his only win was due to luck and he has bottled every other opportunity. He is very fast like LeClerc but does he have the minerals and brain capacity to beat Max? While Norris was faster on the final stint if they didn't undercut oscar twice he had built up a big enough lead to still win by a couple of seconds. I actually think that mclaren undercutting oscar the 2nd tine effected his driving by angering him when going for his first win. They must have a rule to prioritise the race leader and don't undercut them with a team mate no matter who's leading. Horner said it best, they should have prioritised the race leader and pitted piastri first. They created the problem. Anyway I hope oscar wins spa without his team causing problems.
You aren't wasting tyres if you keep up the same pace the entire time you are on the tyres, pull away and make it to the finish line. That's called using tyres. The only fan girl is you and you're wank knowledge and shite talking.
He was faster his Engineer wanted to manipulate him into slowing down so oscar can over take him but sure he wanted to Prove something to his Fan girls lmao
I think your race rating is quite harsh. Hungaroring is always a tough track for overtaking and battles, considering that I don’t think we could’ve asked for much more today. At least it’s somewhat unpredictable at the moment towards the front
@@TommoMcCluskeyreally? I thought the race was quite entertaining with all of the incidents and everyone with the different strategies and Perez and Russell out of position. Maybe it’s bc I’m a Lewis fan but I was thoroughly entertained throughout the race; 7/10 in my book
@@djnfbrhkelkondwvb6853 Yeah, idk how far back we use to calculate what an average f1 race looks like but this is above average from my memory. An average f1 race for me is the p1 driver just flying out ahead and the only racing happening is for the points. This was better imo.
How is there not a championship battle though? We're halfway through the race and this season has shown anything can happen. I am an Oscar stan, but for the sake of a championship, I wanted Lando to win.
The veiled threats over the radio puts a bad taste in my mouth. Regardless of who 'should've won', Lando deserves more respect from the team than that for what he has done the last 3 years.
I did the math, over the next ten races if Max scores an average P 3.9 (just outside of podium contention) and Lando scores an average P 1.6 the championship will be won by Lando ( all be it, by a fine margin), but it's not impossible. I have noticed that Max has also somewhat reverted back to his more aggressive driving styles than recent years; he's much more prone to make mistakes. So perhaps because max will become more threatened with a smaller buffer in the championship he could be more inclined to make mistakes (and by mistakes I mean push really hard and cause damage to his car). This is of course is if McLaren can figure their shit out and actually understand that if they wanted to they could have a drivers championship battle (and could have had it a lot sooner!) Anyways I know that at this moment in time this is just fairytales, but I do math when I'm stressed and being a McLaren fan sitting through this race made me feel all sorts of things.
9/10 for me, Oscar's first win and it was an eventful race, listening to the team radios after teams screwed up most of their drivers was fantastic. Almost every team screwed up in one way or the other. Oddly enough, the only team that actually executed a good strategy was Ferrari. It was an opposite day for everyone, the team, drivers, engineers, except for Gasly, no race finishes for Gasly.
IMO there was no opportunity to directly compare the race pace of TSU and RIC, but there was a post suggesting he was 0.3s faster in the same stint (TSU post pit, RIC post pit #2). If that was the case, VCARB pretty much stole the 9th place from RIC and handed it on a silver platter to TSU (no way he could manage that mega first stint without clear air). Hungary was basically a race of the pitwalls.
6:34 I know you said it was a dull race but I think it’s interesting to look at the race if you imagine every driver as their own non team affiliated driver, If it was all individual cars I think the battle at the front would be a load more thrilling but the context made it a bit boring (team orders etc)
Even Ferrari messed up strategy for Leclerc, they made the long first stint nothing by stopping when Lewis pitted and they swapped the hards which were obviously better (for Ferrari) than mediums
It was good to hear the Australian National Anthem and then God Save the King. It was like being att school again when we had to sing botth each morning
As an Aussie watching that race I was disappointed with how that was handled by the team and also the result, it felt hollow, I couldn't help thinking back to Monza '21 and how excited and happy I was for DR and Lando and the team, I should have been just as excited to see Oscar get his first win, but it just felt wrong. I don't like a manufactured race win and I believe the fastest car/driver should be allowed to win, Lando should have won that race. I know team orders are part of F1 and I'll probably get a bit of backlash but I don't care, I wanted Oscar to beat Lando on track head-to-head, no interference from the pitwall, you know like a race??? not a managed procession, it's bullshit.
David Coulthard was saying that he had a similar situation in the past, letting Hakkinen by for his first win. He wishes he didn't because he felt he lost out on more team order after that
This is entirely on McLaren, if they pit OP first then LN it gives them a chance to proper race rather then arguing over who gets the win let them sort it on track...
McLaren need to start acting like frontrunners imo, because only the drivers are atm They were 14 seconds clear DESPITE conserving pace all day and losing 6 seconds to the swap This was domination, and they should have let Lando win it IMO
My view on a potential WDC fight - Lando only needs to outscore Max by 7 points (average) each race to win now, so one or two dodgy results or DNF for Max could make this very reasonable (yes I know Lando could also have a stinker or DNF, but it definitely isn’t worth dismissing out of hand at this point imo)
Daniel Ricciardo can't catch a break man. That strategy panic call they did for Ricciardo to bring him in on lap 7 was one of the stupidest calls I've ever seen. I like to see Yuki do well as much as the next guy, he did a good race but he definitely got gifted the p9 today. The fans watching these 2 battle each other were robbed of a fair fight between the two. Considering it's make or break for Ricciardo these next 2 races, it's just so sad to see man he didn't deserve that.
yuki didn't get gifted p9. he earned it. daniel could've finished p9 and yuki p10, but he still earned those points. and comparing anything this race makes no sense concidering their different strategies. even during the last stint, their goals were different and yuki conserved his tyres to fend off the astons at the end.
BS why are people so dismissive of Yuki’s skill this race. He had to make his mediums for 30 laps on the first stint with heavy fuel which NO ONE else managed. I understand your anger as a Danny fan but don’t be that guy, it took a lot to make the one stop work and it wasn’t the optimum strategy at Hungary.
Like I said nobody is taking away Yuki's race it was good. I'm just pointing out Daniel got completely shafted that race and without that stupid call to pit that early, he would have most likely had P9 or better. People will see Yuki P9 and Daniel P12 and automatically say Yuki did better when it's completely unfair to compare. Daniels race while being faster all weekend and ahead in the race, was completely ruined by the teams crazy call to bring him in. His career is on the line and it's just so sad to see that happen to him. Thankfully the data will show the real story, but it's the actual points result and the media who will soak it up and put the pressure on. RB just need to learn from that fuck up, it's not the first time they have had dodgy strategy calls, but this one was the worst I've seen. Tsunoda would have been absolutely pissed as well if it happened to him and I wouldn't blame him either. With so much on the line for both drivers right now, all you want to see if a straight fair fight and we were robbed of that this race.
@@bornresaabe Lawson had the same run on Yuki, as Yuki did to Riccardo today and no one cared to analyse, EVERYONE thought Lawson did better than Yuki and it was criminal he did not get the drive, it didn’t matter Yuki’s engine broke down in monza, his lap was impeded in Singapore etc etc. But for these same hypocrites who claim Liam beat Yuki, now suddenly every little stint, pace and strategy mistake matters, where as they did not offer Yuki the same privilege when he had Danny’s luck against Lawson.
I disagree with Tommo about there not being a drivers title challenge. If we accept that McLaren are fastest now, we can accept that it is possible for a Norris-Max 1-2 or even greater in Norris’ favour. If that happens every race then Norris wins. For me that’s the benchmark
McLaren could have covered off that gap and patched up a recent issue by double-stacking Oscar and Lando for the final stop. It might even have put a second or two extra between them so they wouldn't have to worry so much about Lando catching Oscar at the last. Regardless, I think we were robbed of a fight for the win and Oscar earning his stripes against a championship contender.
Don't think anyone's saying he didn't deserve it but if Mclaren close the gap over the rest of the season and Lando ends up losing the championship to Max by a few points they might end up regretting that
Piastri deserved the win. He also deserved a much better strategy than he was given. Lando got that better strat and took the opportunity it presented him as a racer. That was a really poor message to send to Oscar, but guilt-tripping Lando into relinquishing that P1 just because Oscar deserved the win and THE TEAM fumbled it for Oscar also sends a poor message to Lando.
Lots online clamoring to place blame or say what the 'right move' would have been between giving lando or oscar the track position for the final stint. Bottom line, the biggest failure here to me is on mclaren as a team for not explicitly communicating their intent one way or the other to their drivers. They let both of them down this weekend. If you're going the points angle and giving Lando the win, then fine, understandable. But tell the drivers about this, and for the love of god don't turn around and put him in the position of having to give the place back. If you're going the route of keeping Oscar in front, again that's fine and understandable. He had a solid drive and deserved that win. But don't keep him in the dark about your intent to let him back through during a strange pit order call. One would hope that they'd have discussed contingency plans before the race since this exact situation was a very real possibility with both of their drivers starting on the front row. Doesn't seem like that kind of discussion took place tho.
That has to be one of the worst maiden race wins in a long long time... I feel gutted for Oscar because that's not how he would have wanted it. McClaren taking lots and lots of L's on strategy and team management.
Watching piastri’s body language after getting out of the car as a first time f1 race winner was painful… he looked so deflated cause he knew the team fucked the whole thing up and created a load of drama and controversy that will affect him and lando😭😭
Another race where McLaren have messed up Oscar's race. This time, their error was front and centre cos they had to peer pressure Lando into correcting it. They let both their drivers down today, taken the shine away from what should've been a real triumph for the team.
They should have been very clear when pitting Norris that he would have to give the place back but that after that it was a fair fight to the finish 😅🤷🏽♂️ maybe even said you need to let him out of DRS then you can both race to the end 👀😎😍 that would have been the one.
I wonder how many races Max messed up due to late night sim racing? Staying up to 3am has to have some effect on judgment? Maybe he thinks the car damage is turned on, but IRL.🧐
McLaren has been battered by everyone for throwing away winning positions recently. So it is understandable they played it ultra safe here. I mean radio drama was good for them too because they got TV coverage with that in a race where the coverage was all about Max vs Lewis 🤣. And for people who all say Lando should have given it up earlier, imagine if he gave it up immediately and then proceeded to attack Oscar later in the stint. That would have been far more angsty and risky for everyone involved. So yeah it was a bit unnecessary drama but i don't think there will be any fallout off this. Of more concern is the communications from Lando's engineer. It follows the pattern of more verbose less factual theme of the last few races which is not ideal.
nah, Mclaren was the banger team, dominated the race and got a 1-2, you can't blame Mclaren for Norris refusing to switch positions until the last 3 laps
Controversial one but I think Lando messed up in his discussions with the pit wall. If he said "if I let him past and give him 1.5 seconds advantage, can I race him?", they would have had little option but to say yes, and he had half a chance of winning from there.
McLaren fan here too. Honestly I think Lando doesn't have the best of vibes in general. McL's last 1-2, with the Danny win, which Lando "forgot" about in the post-race interview, also featured moaning from Lando, remember?
this was a shit race honestly. watching mclaren fuck over oscar, pitting lando first, then pitting oscar not the next lap but the lap after, what did they think was gonna happen?? the undercut is powerful, so we will protect lando from being undercut by lewis. oh wait!! oscar was leading!! ah fuck!! did they completely forget oscar was leading?? im completely biased, im not just australian but from melbourne, oscar is my favourite driver. i cant remember the last time lando did anything for oscar. i remember lando whining about being behind him and wanting to pass, even if i cant remember the race, but oscar i feel is known for doing things for lando since he isnt as fast as lando is. now theyre on equal footing, at least somewhat, this is only going to keep happening. i think lando has every right to say i need this win, look how fast we are, i am behind max by the least amount of points of anyone else and now we have the fastest car. hes playing the long game and i cant fault him for that. but mclaren forced this situation. seemingly had some sort of agreement pre race, then realised how strong the undercut was, as well as track position, and then gave both to the driver behind
Max was pure cinema lol, Especially when GP said “well that’s a gentle introduction” and Max responded with “don’t give me that ****” 😂😂 Also, Lewis in the post race interview dropped a “that’s motor racing” when asked about his battle with Max at the end.
Bang on 5 outta 10, mclaren did themselves no favours pr wise, i'm an aussie and piastri fan over a lando fan but i dont think they should have swapped it back after saying earlier "you're free to race rthe papya car" then taking it away at the end, i'm sure oscar didn't want it like this.
If I've done the maths right.. even if Max comes second every race, Lando needs to win now every race for the rest of the season for the championship to still be on. If this happens, he wins it by 1 point at the end. Today was just not good enough for McLaren, yet again a strategy fumble. Being a McLaren fan this race was utterly painful to watch.
don't forget there's more points for grabs with 3 more sprint weekends and fastest laps, so it's far from over. if McLaren have the best car for the rest of the season and Max blows up because of his temper once more then for sure Lando has a shot at the title.
@frankhuurman3955 yep, I didn't even count the sprints cause cba.. given the form of Redbull recently, I'd say championship is ofc still on. Having the attitude of "oh its too far fetched" is never gonna win them it, it's just loser mentality.
I think that ultimately, McLaren don't have faith or trust in Lando's ability to fight for a championship with Verstappen. And dare I say, they have more faith in Oscar.
We're just seeing the growing pains of a team learning to how to win a championship (but far out they need to get it together ASAP as I can't think of many faster ways to alienate not only the fanbase, but their two excellent drivers as well)
exactly
They're terrified of Lewis. 😅
@@TommoMcCluskey Honestly I'm convinced Lewis lives rent-free in Randy Singh's head at this point
The disrespect to Bruce McLaren's name. Bloody glad that Oscar won. Despite the shenanigans. Lando ain't that guy. No dog in that boy
Idk how they ever felt threatened by Merc. Think they just had Silverstone flashbacks
@@Duval-In-The-Wallthey’re still acting too cautious. They need to throw their weight around and be arrogant because they have the best race car currently. Don’t worry about others on track as they weren’t a big enough threat
RB cooked Riccardo with that strategy. It was immediately obvious that was the wrong call.
Agreed
Agree horrendous strat from VCARB.
It's almost as if they want Yuki to get the RB seat. Seemingly every decision they make is against Ricciardo
Absolutely and it’s so much more painful because there was nothing he could do and he should’ve been in the points. No accountability from VCARB and it doesn’t help when Ricciardo’s performances are already being undermined.
@@TheMissiIe if you think that you have never paid attention to the horrid strats they put yuki on at times.
Melbourne native here. Mclaren could've EASILY made the situation drama-free by just saying to Lando after the pitstop "if you let Oscar past and re-establishthe order, you can race him"
Then the horrible strategies would've been forgotten, and Lando probably would've won anyway
Exactly this, but I think McLaren were so desperate for their drivers NOT to race
Ironically enough if 3rd place was close to them there is no way in HELL they would thought about swapping
Would Lando be quicker to return the lead if the pit wall straight up said "Hey, listen, we screwed Oscar over with our shit strategy, please let him pass"
Lando knew McLaren screwed Oscar with the strategy. He even said on the radio "You should've pit him first then".
🤷♂️
🤣😂🤣🤣
@@bl4xxun Nonsense
McLaren stuffed it, and neither driver comes out of this race happy. Oscar's great drive and deserved win is completely overshadowed, and Lando was forced to endure the torture of giving up a win. Complete failure on the team side, when they should be celebrating a great 1-2. It was harrowing to watch.
The strategy for Danny Ric cost the team the possibility of double points. If they wanted to pit him so early like the teams on softs then they should have started him on softs. He could've gone longer on mediums. His pace was good today.
His pace was the faster of the two VCARBs today but no one will remember that. Midfield is brutal, at least the teams have the data
@@Duval-In-The-Wall Honestly I'm amazed he made it back up to P12 with how screwed over he was by the team. For a long time I thought he'd finish like P17-P18. It was a lowkey impressive drive to be able to recover like that.
F1TV's Alex Jaques with either/both Palmer and Coulthard is a superior broadcast.
Can’t believe McLaren wouldn’t pit Oscar first
Or even one lap later would've probably been fine
Couldn't do it easy could they.
@@TommoMcCluskey they definitely could have seeing their outstanding race pace
200 podiums by Lewis is crazy, but true insanity is realizing over 50% of those are wins...
So so dumb
Monday quarterbacking
@@owenrodgers8020Lewis is a pace machine, if Lando was on his sight he would have caught him
Was a tough watch at the end honestly.
Stop blaming the team, what the heck are they supposed to do? It is 100% Lando's ego that soured a maiden victory for Oscar.
@@savant_spoon_bender
Let their drivers race, or give the leader the preferred strategy? Basic stuff mate, obviously the guy SECOND in the championship wants to go fast and chase the win
Honestly McLaren really impressed me this weekend. I did think there was a chance in hell they could deliver a worse strategy than Silverstone but boy did they prove me wrong…
28:48 B A S E D Tommo. Appreciate that you keep things apolitical, but the occasional jab is brilliant. Enjoying the chinwags, looking forward to Belgium!
Aussie here. Yep, McLaren made that horrible for everyone and soured Oscars win. 🤦♀️
Legitimately McLaren are the banger team AND the clanger team.
Piastri was undercut twice.
I think Lando was foolish to wait to give it back. If he had just given the place back when they first told him, then he could have tried to fight back past Oscar with his faster pace and DRS
Oh how I'd love to be a fly on the wall when Zac has his meeting.
It had a lot, just not much of it was to do with the wheels on tarmac. 😅
The difference is Perez crashed again and he is even at the worst weekend of Verstappen and Redbull till now miles away
@@LH_447 Clanger is based on the Sunday race and not the whole weekend. Does Checo deserve his seat? No. Did he have a terrible weekend? Yes. Did he have a good Sunday? Yes. So he doesn't deserve clanger drive.
Why did he qualify 16th AND crashed. He is pathetic at this point. Sunday was already ruined
Icl I don’t think lando is ready either. His pace and skill is there but his mentality isn’t. He’s still too soft hearted imo🤷♂️
This race was a 7.2 for me because I put £5 on the podium order at 100:1 and I had to pray for lando to obey team orders.
Thanks Tommo enjoyed your perspective alot of other u tubers are did not give a balanced perspective on the oscar win thank you

Tommo has made a good point here, without the radio stuff, the swap would’ve looked like pure match fixing and I don’t think would’ve ever happened
Can they put Crofty in the sin bin again and get the other dude back to commentate? The sim racing comments and the lame dad jokes are so annoying
Not only annoying but they're embarassing for the entire sky f1 crew.
I dont wanna think about this race again.
thank you for the australia friendly timing 🙏
If Zak Brown has some balls he should clear out the indecisive rot on the pit wall.
completely agree
I think the main thing is if they want Oscar to listen to team orders in the future they had to do this after screwing him with the strategy. Not that Lando should have listened, but being at war with your teammate helps no one
Team orders have been around forever. Your novice is showing.
I wish someone would give Danny and Perez some credit lol, they both did great in the race
Also I’m loving all these comments arguing with each other 😂
What a funny race. So many opportunities for laughs!
As long as the driver championship win is still mathematically possible, any racing driver will have some hope, even if it is far fetched. You can't blame lando for having a go at it even if he's more than 70 pts behind max, because we're only halfway through the season
All the Lando copium. Gunna be some butt hurt Lando bois soon when Oscar is regularly beating him, they’ll be as whiny as he is.
Oscar deserved the win but not like that, McLaren need to get their shit together
exactly! oscar should have been pitted first
I think that this is one of the longest live you made about a GP 😮🤯
this race rating is harsh for me. Hamilton’s defense of Max in itself brought it to a 5 for me. Add some of the drama, Max-Ham collision and Russell and Perez coming through the field it’s surely atleast a 6
Almost every team made mistakes or were slow. What is it about this weekend that made this happen?
When the poll comes back with the lower or higher category winning. I think you should run another poll.
Logan out qualified a Red Bull, picked up the second fastest lap, and Biden conceding. America was the real winner this weekend 🇺🇲🦅🦅‼️
people saying stuff like 'even if there is 1% chance of a WDC norris should always be given priority' Is f*cking absurd, do you guys think Norris is schumacher here & Piastri is Irvine?
Put All of Max Verstappen's Radio Chat on a Giant Mural & Put it in The Met ❤.
Incredible theater 😂
Lando wasn't faster in the last stint. He was wasting his tyres against their tyre engineers advice in order to prove a point to his fan girls.
No.. He was faster. He was faster in the second stint as well
You aren't wasting tyres if you keep up the same pace the entire time you are on the tyres, pull away and make it to the finish line.
5 is average remember. There's no way the race itself was above the average quality of a race imo. Radio drama saved it being very forgettable.

Agree mate, if this race happened in monaco it would've been a 10 just because of how low expectations would have been
Can anyone please tell me which track on the calendar is good for passing? Every week it is said that passing is difficult at this track. 😂😂
Tommo Tifosi confirmed. All red predictions xD
Yeah was too Early for us Perth folks. watching at 10:55pm.

I feel like Lando has an inferiority complex from being ‘No-wins’ for so long…
I think it is more the fact that no racer wants to give away a P1.
Tommo way off the mark here with the race rating
Will Max do iRacing events on the evening before an F1 race from now on??
McLaren need to start acting like frontrunners imo, because only the drivers are atm
They were 14 seconds clear DESPITE conserving pace all day and losing 6 seconds to the swap
This was domination, and they should have let Lando win it IMO
My view on a potential WDC fight - Lando only needs to outscore Max by 7 points (average) each race to win now, so one or two dodgy results or DNF for Max could make this very reasonable (yes I know Lando could also have a stinker or DNF, but it definitely isn’t worth dismissing out of hand at this point imo)
also I imagine Lando would now get the favour returned much easier now for the rest of the season by Oscar now he’s done him this solid
Tommos a real one. 🫡🫡🫡
Perez had a better race-day performance than Verstappen. Discuss
Correct
I disagree with Tommo about there not being a drivers title challenge. If we accept that McLaren are fastest now, we can accept that it is possible for a Norris-Max 1-2 or even greater in Norris’ favour. If that happens every race then Norris wins. For me that’s the benchmark
McLaren could have covered off that gap and patched up a recent issue by double-stacking Oscar and Lando for the final stop. It might even have put a second or two extra between them so they wouldn't have to worry so much about Lando catching Oscar at the last.
Regardless, I think we were robbed of a fight for the win and Oscar earning his stripes against a championship contender.
if yuki did what max was doing on that radio the media would have a FIELD day
Hello from the Blue Mountains Australia , Ye ye Nah
piastri ABSOLUTELY deserved the win! why are norris fans always the 3rd worst? (behind max and nando fans of course)
YES this is what McLaren should have done: Norris, we fucked up. Give him the place immediately, and you can race him safely to the end
They had no intention to let Lando race him. Lando knew that.
Max Verstappen gets a 2 today
Made multiple mistakes, threw away a podium and very lucky not to DNF
Against his high standards this was a clanger
Worried about Belgium as a Mc fan, they put Lando in a terrible position and the vibes are now cursed I’m afraid
McLaren fan here too. Honestly I think Lando doesn't have the best of vibes in general. McL's last 1-2, with the Danny win, which Lando "forgot" about in the post-race interview, also featured moaning from Lando, remember?
@@hisham_hm tbf maybe Lando was referring to McLaren’s last 1-2 finish in Hungary, which was in 1999
this was a shit race honestly. watching mclaren fuck over oscar, pitting lando first, then pitting oscar not the next lap but the lap after, what did they think was gonna happen?? the undercut is powerful, so we will protect lando from being undercut by lewis. oh wait!! oscar was leading!! ah fuck!! did they completely forget oscar was leading?? im completely biased, im not just australian but from melbourne, oscar is my favourite driver. i cant remember the last time lando did anything for oscar. i remember lando whining about being behind him and wanting to pass, even if i cant remember the race, but oscar i feel is known for doing things for lando since he isnt as fast as lando is. now theyre on equal footing, at least somewhat, this is only going to keep happening. i think lando has every right to say i need this win, look how fast we are, i am behind max by the least amount of points of anyone else and now we have the fastest car. hes playing the long game and i cant fault him for that. but mclaren forced this situation. seemingly had some sort of agreement pre race, then realised how strong the undercut was, as well as track position, and then gave both to the driver behind
The drivers all turning into the Real Housewives of F1 on the radio. Love it!
Max was pure cinema lol, Especially when GP said “well that’s a gentle introduction” and Max responded with “don’t give me that ****” 😂😂
Also, Lewis in the post race interview dropped a “that’s motor racing” when asked about his battle with Max at the end.
Race rating 7 out of 10
Bang on 5 outta 10, mclaren did themselves no favours pr wise, i'm an aussie and piastri fan over a lando fan but i dont think they should have swapped it back after saying earlier "you're free to race rthe papya car" then taking it away at the end, i'm sure oscar didn't want it like this.
