  • Massive thanks to Werner for this album choice. I've not heard of Subsignal before, but we have listened to Sieges Even, which has a close tie to this band.

Hey Jim! Thanks for picking my suggestion, and quicker than expected. Is this adventurous music? Maybe not, but it's - at least in my opinion - very good, very well made, very enjoyable music. Subsignal are by no means heavy prog, they don't even fit neatly in the "neo prog" category, being that their music is much more melodic (with even a "pop sensibility", if you want to call it that), follows traditional song structures more closely, and is less concerned with showing off instrumental skills than that of the bands most commonly associated with the genre. On "La Muerta" even more so than on some of their other albums. However, their music, and this album - as well as their debut - in particular, holds a very special place in my heart. The melodies are gorgeous (especially those euphoric, anthemic choruses you mentioned), I love Arno's warm and emotional voice, some of the solos are really cool - it's just one of my absolute go-to albums when I want some enjoyable music that will make me feel good. Not everything in life always needs to be harsh, mindblowingly innovative or super complicated, and I just felt that there hasn't been anything similar to this on the channel in a long time. Also, I would just like to support the band and get more people acquainted with their music, since they are very much under the radar.
The connection to Sieges Even is that Subsignal guitarist Markus Steffen was a founding member of that band, singer Arno Menses joined them in 2004 and recorded their last two albums and a live album with them. The band eventually broke up in 2008 and Steffen and Menses went on to form Subsignal. If you want the perfect mix of Subsignal's melodic sensibilities and Sieges Even's more technical, proggy approach, you should check out Sieges Even's final album "Paramount". Maybe that will hit your sweet spot better than this does. Or maybe I'll just request that as well some day. ;)
As always, thank you for the good work, hope you enjoy the second half of the album as well. Cheers, mate.

Hey Werner! Firstly, massive thanks for selecting this album to listen to. It’s actually really well made, smooth as peanut butter and completely fine within its genre. This is smooth rock with progressive leanings, edgier and flashier than Moon Safari. As a record to listen to over and over again, it might not be the first thing I’d reach for, but it’s an interesting listen and I’m enjoying what I’m hearing. Everything that’s released is legitimate valid music. Looking forward to hearing the second part tomorrow! I’ve also noticed a link to RPWL! Thanks again.

Interesting sound. I too picked up on the kinda 80's vibe; I could imagine this as a movie score from one of the light hearted pop comedies of the era.
I don't dislike it, but I'm not sure there's anything here I'd need to come back to again.

UNBELIEVABLE... I just heard this album for the first time this very morning. I think YOU turned me on to "Sieges Even" which led me to Subsignal. So I guess I owe you ANOTHER "thank you". Cheers Jim!

    Good evening Jim,
Never heard of them as so often.
Very short first song because I wanted to hear more of it.
2nd song. Hooray, real singing 😅. Great voices. Musically it isn’t that exciting. Predictable I should say. Good but no more.
Very polished like Boston and also a bit like Styx. They sound a bit American and that isn’t a compliment considering the genre of music.
3rd song. Same comments as the previous song. (Me, Aldi beard trimmer and razor blades)
    4th song. 🥱😴
5th song. Delicate piece of music. Much better than the previous three songs.
    6th song. 😴

Hmm... thought I was listening to Gong for the first ten seconds then the more prog-metal guitars came in and my ears perked up but deperked with the vocals and over-comfortable melodic line. Jim's right in comparing it with the polished late 80s feel and the wilderness years of Yes. Second track is more of the same without breaking out of any comfort zone and I must admit to skipping through much of the rest of the video as the five-second bursts didn't grab me at all. As adventurous as a chicken korma and white rice without any chilli powder.

I'll add that there's absoultely nothing wrong with this :) not every band needs to be pushing the boundries and bringing something new to the table.
Finding your grove and existing in it is grand. I listen to a lot of instrumental post rock and a lot of it fits into this catagory of music. Just good.

Also, have you checked out anything from the band IQ
They are in a similar vein as these guys I would say

IQ are brilliant. They are more proggy than Subsignal, though. More in the traditional Neo-Prog vein, but with a very unique sound.
