Purchased Pico 4 to potentially replace my old Rift S (PCVR via displayport). Pancake lens are great. Although the streaming artifacts and general image quality of the streamed image is not my favourite. I've used a third party application to rise the bitrate (it's called streaming assistant extender) and I was able to reach 240mbps using HEVC (so it should have less artifacts). Unfortunately my only PC is a gaming laptop with a RTX2070 (luckily with a 115w version). Although not sufficient to rise the render resolution above 1.0x. The result especially in ACC it's a very blurred vision especially on the horizon or far away, where the compression comes in and make everything far away like a blob of colours and compression artifacts. Especially in low contrast areas. Having used DP vr headset for 4 years and being more sensitive in spotting artifacts (although in general the quality isn't great), i can easily see them. This makes the experience not great at all, it looks like I lost my eyesight when playing ACC! I also increased the resolution of the streamed image to the Pico 4 but unfortunately this didn't help. I think I'll return it to Amazon and keep my Rift S. Not a fan of a compressed 8 bit stream. My eyes prefer a true video digital 4:4:4 signal coming from a display port. Such a shame, I was intrigued by the Pico 4! 😢
I've just ordered the Pico4 after quite a bit or prior research and watching your video about it. Both that video and this one have been extremely valuable to me and I thank you wholeheartedly for your time and effort in producing such useful content. The dog's b******s!
Nice, the video I was expecting! I've actually lost it through my feed, since the thumbnail was so similar to the previous one I just scrolled over it. Was thinking about it these days with just 10 days for my headset to arrive and just searched through your channel to see if I've missed something and bingo!
For VR, always a priority is resolution over visual effects. All headsets need like 1.4x their native resolution to account for barrel distortion. In this case, pico needs 3120x3120 per eye. You will be more pleased with it.
Virtual Desktop (only wireless) works a lot better than the tethered connection with far better graphics quality at least on my system (RTX 4080, i5 13600, Wifi 6 router). The performance-overlay shows me about 25 ms latency for the en- and decoding (USB needs that as well) plus network, but even if I wiggle very quick with the wheel, it's in sync with the graphical wheel, so not an issue. But I have to say the experience was far worse with the 3080 before and not sure if updates of Virtual Desktop have improved it or, what I guess, the 4080. I even bought a 8KX to get displayport-VR, but now in comparison, I only use the 8KX because of the wider FOV. Almost everything else is better with the Pico 4. There is a bit more hassle getting into VR and Virtual Desktop changes the desktop resolution to 1080p. The benefit is, I can fully use my desktop with mouse or motion-controllers while my display is turned off. If I do that in SteamVR mode, I can't use the desktop mode because neither mouse nor controllers work anymore outside VR-mode. To switch in Virtual Desktop to the build-in desktop-mode you need to hold the far left button for a couple of seconds. PS: Plugged into a power-supply the Pico 4 doesn't drain battery at all.
I have Virtual Desktop too. There's a way to use VD wired over Ethernet, with the headset plugged into the router. I've been testing this too with VD. Some people swear that gives better visuals compared to SA over USB. I really can't see an obvious difference. I shall do more testing on this one as it is quite interesting.
@@SimRacingCorner The visuals with VD are in another league compare to the Streaming app, but as I said, the quality could be hardware-dependend no matter what settings you use. The switch between 3080 and 4080 was like night & day difference, but I sold the 3080 and there were few VD-updates in between, so not sure. I also had bad audio-lag before and no audio-lag now if using both desktop- and HMD-outputs and you should notice audio-lag if it's over 8 ms. I have more audio-lag with the DMAS of my 8KX despite displayport. It seems to me, that VD is using the new GPUs far more effective. You also get up to 400 MBit with the new H.264+ mode, but would suggest to lower it to 300 MBit because not only I had dropouts while using 400. But even the 150 MBit-modes are fine here thanks to the sharpening and that's really the best about VD. There is no sharpening in SteamVR and the 8KX looks much better with sharpening thanks to OpenXR Composite, but it's causing problems and turned it off.
PS: The VR-performance with the 4080 is also in a completely different league compare to the 3080 and far more than you would expect by all those pancake-benchmarks on RUclips. I can run the Pico 4 with over 3000 x 3000 pixel PER EYE and rock-solid 90 fps and the GPU is maybe at 60% while the i5 almost sleeping around 20% load according to fpsVR. With the 8KX I can run about 4300 x 3600 per eye and it goes up to 85% with zero framedrops in AMS2, but always better to have a bit more headroom, so I've lowered it a little.
Yeah, maybe it's a hardware thing, I've spent a bunch of time yesterday and this morning, going between SA and VD. And I can't claim it's a night and day difference for me. I did try H.264+ in VD at 400mbs as well over wired Ethernet. I don't plan to upgrade the 3090, waiting for the 50 series of cards next year. I tend to skip a generation. And I wouldn't say I need too right now, I'm happy with this setup.
@@SimRacingCorner That's interesting. For me, I found that the image was pretty blurry with the Pico Streaming software, but razor sharp with VD at Godlike (3120 Godlike vs 2560 PS Ultra presumably explains it). I'm on a 3080 and am happy with performance, but I'm one of those people who can happily sit at 45FPS in VR with no issues. With battery plugged in, I don't lose any battery level in the headset, but perhaps USB connection provides less juice.
Ill just say it here too, All pico 4 Owners, go inside SA folder and Bitrate from 150 to 230 (bit rate 175 and max bitrate 230) -Resolutions to 3024 Save, exit. Reboot, connect pico 4 ,Check if changes still apply if not do again while running app, save and it will work instantly. No need for VD anymore :D SA is quite good for a free app now
I'm also using VD wireless, and I'm happy with the results, my 13600 (4090) seems to be doing OK just have the odd stutter once in a while, but I would like to explore wired VD use
I have a 75hz monitor that I can't overclock to 90hz. The headset can only display 90Hz in the Steam VR menu, but as soon as the game starts (AC, ACC, AMS2) it doesn't go more than 75Hz. Is it possible to eliminate the view on the monitor so as not to influence the refresh rate of Pico 4? Do you have another solution for me? Thank you
How to remove the insanely annoying head tracked eye controlled menu navigation? It tries to activate all the time, there comes this white crosshair in all of my games and it works as a mouse followinh my head movements, blinking eyes slowly works as enter. It is so slow and annoying and unusable in most games, especially in AMS2. Searched the internet and seems like i am the only person that has ever experienced this issue.
I have an issue where when I start a game from the Steam VR house menu, the screen on the Pico 4 goes completely gray, but in can be seen working properly on the monitor. I only have this problem on legit Steam copies, on pirated games that use the cracked steam vr thing they come with, it works without issue. Any help on what might be wrong?
Good video mate. I have a much better solution for you though, absolutely no flex meant whatsoever..If I make a RUclips video to show you, you could share it with your subscribers, as I'll obviously have no audience to start with, and it will help a lot of sim racers access high end VR performance, for a very low cost, as the Pico4 is on sale right now.. I'll keep you posted when I've made a vid..I guarantee you'll immediately begin using this simple technique yourself with your Pico4, and won't go back to your current method.

Would it work for iRacing as well?
Hi,
What are you using for open the game Steam VR of Oculus VR ?
SteamVR
is there a way for motion compensation in a sim rig ??? because this thing has inside out tracking right ?

No Ida sorry after testing a lot I've decided that VR racing isn't for me yet, and for overall experience I prefer my ultrawide@@exhaustor5983

Can you run pico 4 with 10400f and a 3060 ti and 32 gb ram?
what if we use openxr and not steamvr? then
What about headphones? Is it possible to split the usb-c to usb-c & jack? I tried a simple splitter and the usb-c to pc didnt work..
You'll need to use Bluetooth headphones, that's the only way.
awesome THX! Now do one for AC and CM :D
Can we have details or a link to that powered USB cable option pls
