To those asking, my jacket is this one from Iron Heart! Sadly discontinued, some available here www.selfedge.com/iron-heart?product_id=2319 Otherwise the N1 is pretty similar www.ironheart.co.uk/jackets/IHM-35-KHA.html
Red Wing will also sell factory seconds at their warehouse sale in their MN headquarters. Discontinued models, foreign exclusives, seconds, etc. Of course this is only relevant to those of us within or around MN but it's a good chance to see the boots in person before purchasing them and getting other models normally unavailable. Last year the warehouse sale was cancelled due to the pandemic but I haven't heard anything about this year yet.
The cheapest boots I ever got was when I ordered a pair and was sent two pairs by mistake. I sent one pair back and kept the other, they refunded me the price and I essentially got a free pair of GYW boots.
Amazon actually had a check box for that when you are trying to return stuff. I think they can write it off as a tax loss and sending back /processing it costs money.
I got a free couch that way. One got lost in shipping so the company sent another, months later the first showed up and they didn't want it back. My dad didn't need 2 couches and gave me one. Sweet!
My intro to real boots was buying the Iron Rangers 8111s; they were "store models" and came without a box. They were brand new, but discounted $60 for lack of box. That's another great way to save $, if you can find a store model. Great one-two punch here; love both you and "Rose Anvil." My most-watched channels.
Nordstrom Rack and Sierra Trading post are always worth looking at if you're in the market for boots like Red Wings. For other brands...just do your homework! Lots of them have their own unique ways of selling this sort of thing (as alluded to in the end of this video). For example, White's runs the whitesriver eBay account to sell stuff that has been returned for issues other than quality ones (sizing issues or whatever) at a hefty discount. Tricker's Outlet constantly updates with new stock at far cheaper prices than retail.
Ordered myself a pair of Red Wing seconds from Sierra. Like Westin said, not too worried about scuffs or scratches on the leather since Red Wings look better once they're worn in a bit
I got a pair of factory second AE Fifth Avenues a few years ago. Saved about $200 and the only thing I could spot on them was a scratch on the leather sole which would've happened the second I wore them outside anyways.
One that wasn't mentioned here is Berkeley Supply. They are my number one recommendation for getting Red Wing factory seconds BECAUSE they are very detailed about WHICH factory seconds they offer. I've bought 2 different pair from them and absolutely could not identify any issues whatsoever with the boots. I have 9 pair of Red Wing's total. I've bought a few of the Sierra seconds and they are usually obvious. Like my slate moc toes had a spot on the toe box where a drop of glue had gotten on to the suede.. Another pair of 875's were so bad that I sent them back. They were listed as the right size but were so far off that I couldn't even get my feet into them, let alone just being "smaller" than normal. And the welt was thoroughly chewed up from some kind of machinery. That was the worst pair I tried but thankfully Sierra allows you to return seconds. Big recommendation for Berkely Supply though. They don't always have a big selection, but you can trust anything you buy from them will be virtually perfect.
Great video Gents. I've bought 4 pairs of Red Wing seconds. The worst "defect" is unaligned eyelets, which is no biggie. I'm probably the only one who notices it.
Great video. I am lucky to live less than an hour from Red Wing headquarters in Minnesota, where the huge basement is a beautiful array of factory seconds. Half of my boots came from there, and as you noted, the 2nds are typically indistinguishable from the firsts. Red Wing must have a very strict criteria for firsts, but some of my “seconds” are as good as the firsts, and you pay about 60% of full price! I also see them at Sierra much more than the Rack.
Boots i got as seconds had different hight heels. I didn't notice until my knee started to hurt like a lot. After some time i narrowed it down to the fact i actually get pain after waring those perticular boots. I inspected them and found that. My cobbler exchanged heel pads and sanded leather stacks to the right size for like 20e and now they are fine. I inspected the boots right away when i got them carefully but i didn't think of checking the heel hight
I used to work for Zappos, and 6pm is thier clearance site. The only thing to keep in mind is that a lot of thier stock are returns from Zappos customers that were not in good enough condition to restock. So make sure you really inspect what you're getting before you wear. Also, Zappos often gets targeted by scammers who buy luxury items and return fakes. So verify the authenticity of your purchases if possible.
I have 2 pairs of Factory seconds from Grant Stone and its a HUUUGE value. It's always like superficial defects like exposed glue or weird welt fudging.
I once walked into Marshalls HomeGoods and found a pair of Timberland premiums in olive nubuck, with a padded tongue, for $90. That was nuts for sure. Never seen another pair like 'em, either.
I just got a once worn pair of factory seconds Redwing 875's on ebay for a screaming deal. $170 shipped. Can't find the flaw anywhere and it's driving me mad. I keep staring at them looking for something to jump out...
I snagged some Red Wing 1907's on Grailed just the other day and they're great. Got Iron Rangers on ebay last year and that experience was great too. Like they said, due diligence is key.
The sticking point for me is the fact that you can't exchange if they don't fit you right. Especially for online only DTC brands, that means you could be stuck with a boot that just doesn't fit right. And each brand sizes boots a bit differently. For me that's worth paying for the full amount. I could maybe justify if I already owned a pair and just wanted a second.
I really miss our local shoe outlet that would have actual factory seconds for cheap. Oh well, thanks for the tips. I did not know about the Thorogood site.
Found a pair of danner bull runs worn once for $100 on Poshmark and a pair of Redwing LoggerMax unused for $120. Amazing boots for cheap and basically new!
Fantastic video. Would have been good to mention which online stuff is applicable to the international crowd boot and which are US only. Also, Meermin has started doing some decent factory seconds sales every 6 months or so
Everyone keep in mind that some places that offer Boots that are factory seconds will not take returns and you also run the risk of getting a Genuinely botched and uncomfortable pair of boots.
I got a pair of factory seconds red wings for $80 at nordstrom rack. The only thing wrong with them is a hole in the top of the tongue. Wear 'em every day
hey can i get your opinion on my next pair of boots? i love my thursday presidents but i want something fancier for the weekends or for when i want to dress nice. i feel like the lasts from thursday were made for my feet specifically. There used to be a lady in my area that sold hytest safety boots. That’s where I would go all the time for my work boots. That’s all she had was seconds.
