- Welcome to YARNS; Conversations with Cruisers, A Sailing Podcast
James Frederick sits down with sailors he meets around the world to record their seas stories in remote anchorages and far-flung ports. All the interviews are recorded as a video podcast that is released on the Sailing Triteia RUclips Channel. They are also being made available as an audio podcast for those who prefer this format of content.
On this episode I interview Lin Pardey and David Haigh onboard David’s 40-foot steel Van de Stadt sloop, Sahula. If you know anything about sailing, Lin needs no introduction. Her books have inspired millions of people to get out and see the world onboard small boats. She was one of the main reasons I thought this sailing dream, on a small boat with a limited budget. I had only just met David on the day of this interview but had done a bit a research on him ahead of time and read about his 11 year circumnavigation that was a combination of solo and short handed sailing taking him to unique places in the world, off the normal circumnavigation routes.

I am 71yr old and after listening to your guests I realize that I wish I learned about Sailing during my youth. I am considering sailing at my age and maybe I can have some of my own tales to tell. I don't think it is too late to start. I really enjoyed your program. Thanks.
Make it real. This isn’t a dress rehearsal..lol. God bless.
I've re- found your videos (courtesy of your Ilford Sound entries) & I'm really looking forward to your "Yarns" What a great idea! 👍
My neighbor joined a club at 70. He just emailed me from Fiji. Made it happen.
How is it going? Have you made it happen?
Ah, really...! This was one of the great interviews that make this series, alone, a treasure for future sailors and adventurers to find. Recorded so casually, like an after-dinner conversation aboard, feeling the timeless rhythms of the sea, when words just seem to crystallize memories and learned wisdom to be passed on, ear to ear, heart to heart. What rang truest to me was the paring down that must happen, and then the commitment that follows - whether in choosing a boat, a lifestyle, outfitting - in cruising or in trekking. Finding the "raw;" making it happen; finding the people (not just the sceneries) that turn memories into our history. Deep thanks, Lin and David, and thanks, James, for dedicating your channel so wisely to all this.
You said it man
Read a lot of Pardey literature over the last 4 decades. Good to see Lin is sharp as a tack and still living her best life. Onya Dave for being key to her later life.
What an epic opportunity to chat with such a well-known inspiration. I'm loving this part of your journey
Great! Lin and Larry got me sailing and living aboard back in the 80's with no money and no skills. Best part of my life and still a sailing addict. Glad to see Lin is still sailing.
THE LEGEND HERSELF! Just started “Self-Sufficient Sailor”, 3rd edition. Stoked for this episode.
James, YARNS comes across to me as some of your best work. I could be wrong but you seem to enjoy making them. Keep them coming.
Thanks for introducing David. An educated Australian is always good company.
Brilliant , love it ,,and guess this is what it all about not only the places you get to see but the magic people you meet , Thank you for sharing inspiring stuff James !!!
What a wonderful interview, I hope it is just part 1! Lin sounds like she has more stories than you have batteries so it would be so awesome to have another story telling with her. Thank You, James.
Wow this is wild man, you are a fortunate guy to have landed this interview. And he is a lucky man to find such a partner. This was one of a kind.
Me and Lin had corresponded for years before and just happened to be in the same marina at the same time 👍🏻
Every part of this was so delightful to hear. The minutes just flew by. Thank you all for sharing.
Enjoyed seeing this chat. Knew David in another life and so good to learn of his sailing life and his partner Lin. ❤
Great interview James. Must have been amazing meeting and interviewing Lin. Thanks for sharing. I feel fortunate to live in Scandinavia and I'm really looking forward sailing up to Norway in May. Take care

I would love to know more about what is on your book shelf. I think it is always interesting to see what sailors read. Perhaps a future episode.

This one is going to be hard to beat.
Which is why it was the season finale 😂
Holly Martin, Wind Hippy Sailing, is the ballsiest young adventurers, exploring the seas with the absolute least with the best humour. A real inspiration.
What a life you’ve had
Fabulous - I now have all the excuses I need to “just go” and “put aside the broken parts” - I can “fix them all later”.. And“don’t let the broken complications stop [me] from sailing..” 😅
Although I appreciated the talk and knowledge and will consider the points, in one breath it’s “no guns and don’t be afraid”, then it’s “we wanted security”, based upon fear of attack. Living with shooting someone wouldn’t be easy, but then risking your crew’s safety is also a problem (from both having firearms or not having them on board). Arguments for and against gun based security are both important to consider. Also realizing the benefit from some of the 26 boats possibly being armed bleeds over to all boats in the rally.
Tell me your an American without telling me your an American. You live in fear, it’s unnecessary
Wonderful :)
James - My podcast app says your link to the podcast is bad. I am going to keep trying to get it do download. (Android /Podcast addict app)
Yes YARNS is now only available on RUclips
Whoa.
YEAH BIG DOG!!! 🐶
Great interview. They are rock stars.
Also now they want you to have a captains license if your boats above 26’. I guess because so many people are buying boats.
I have no clue what country you are talking about but that is not the case for the USA or any country that I know of
🙂🙌☕️
Obligatory Supportive Comment
“Please don’t shoot me” imagine your sailing security plan is contingent upon begging for your life from pirates and hoping they decide not to rape/kill and only rob because carrying a gun and having a possible shootout is unacceptable. To each their own, but there are worse things than dying in a shootout.
You are a sad American clown

Nice. Läuft bei dir!
@@bertram5798 tja, leider läuft es nicht bei mir. Hab aber keine Schuld dran. Würde lieber selbst weg segeln. Leider ist mein Boot im Winterlager. Ihr mache trotz allem was gut.
Also ihr macht es richtig wollte ich sagen
