I'm from the beauty world so I can see the appeal of using color theory in ink based on the undertone of a client. I'm wondering how different "blends" of black would heal though because most blank ink tattoos heal with a blue tint anyways.

    • @gggthsb
      @gggthsb 2 месяца назад +12

@@spaghetto-v8z not really because that specific tattoo only works as a piece when it lines up. It's not comparable wit 'oh, your butterfly strechted a little since I gained weight', because the butterfly still makes sense and is a cohesive piece. That circle will end up as a few random lines that do not align anymore and the tattoo doesn't make sense anymore.

The guy talking about mixing colors based on skin tone is talking about using color theory to achieve the most contrast according to the recipient's skin pigment. All artists should know about the color spectrum and about how each color has a corresponding color that is its "opposite" and would therefore achieve the most contrast (e.g., red-green, yellow-purple, blue-orange, to keep it simple). I actually think it is really cool that he is doing that - so many people of color get told that tattoos just won't ever look as good on certain darker shades of skin. I think its awesome that an artist is trying to find ways to improve the longevity of tattoos for people of color by taking their skintone into account when selecting colors.
You may not see the value in a small difference between a red toned black and a blue toned black, but someone with olive-toned skin absolutely will because a red toned black is going to contrast with the slight green hue of their skin better than a blue tone would. For people with particularly dark complexions, anything to increase contrast is going to improve the visibility and longevity of their tattoos. You, as an artist who works in Mexico, might want to play around with using color to tone black ink based on your client's skin tone. Maybe you can find someone with a darker, orange-reddish complexion who will let you compare standard black ink to black ink that is tinted with green or blue to see if it improves how the black contrasts with their skin.
For what its worth, color theory is dope and can be REALLY helpful for artists. For example, if you have a bunch of different colored paints that vary in tone (some pastel, some neon, some earthy, etc.) but you want to use those general colors in a piece, just with a more cohesive palette, you can mix a small amount of one color in with all the others to give them all a matching underlying tone that will make it so they all 100% go together. You can just choose a tone based on the theme of the piece (e.g., give each color a slightly pink hue for a sunset scene, a slightly blue hue for a hazy, rainy landscape, etc.) That saves you the trouble of having to buy a bunch of different sets of paints when you want to use a slightly different tone than what you have available.

Hey! The part where you comment on the black ink hue vartiation in relation to the skin base colour is nothing new. Here in the west i've seen most people not giving it much thought but i've heard to some japanese traditional guys explaining how different sumi heals different in different skin tones and they adjust wich sumi stick to grind to achieve a certain hue in their blacks. I think the waboripedia podcast, in the interview with London Slade he goes over this thing, but japanese traditional is based on hard evidence thru experience given from masters to apprentices.

I cant even work as a dirt poor shop hand, i have a kid and wife and rent and bills. So that now has to mean that im precluded FOR LIFE from being a tattooer? Nah, fuck thay noise, dude. Im gonna practice on fake skin and my own legs for a long time before i start charging money, but im gonna scratch. Is there another way? Im genuinely asking, besides an unpaid apprenticeship or slave-wage shop hand, IS there another way? Cause i would jump at it!

I went to the old lady in the Philippines this year with a good friend of mine. A lot of people may not know this, but to go see her in the village it’s a whole journey! Flying out to Manila from wherever you are from, then ride a car for 10-11 hours and once you get to the bottom of the mountain you have to hike up for 45 mins.-1 hour, depending on your athleticism. The 3 dots tattoo with Apo Whang Od took maybe 10 minutes, but the line can get pretty long and you will need a local person to guide you through the process. The 3 dots costs 300 pesos, I believe, which is less than USD 10.
I got mine done and it looks what one would expect…the dots aren’t perfectly circular and the pain to get them ranged anywhere from 1 - 10, very inconsistent lol
However… it’s the journey of getting ‘em dots!!! My friend and I made new friends, experienced different culture and had cool stories to tell folks at home.
So tattoos do really represent memories 😊 and this is the most expensive tattoo I have considering all the traveling expenses involved 😂😂😂

There are flats, magnums and double stacked magnums. A 7 flat tip will accommodate a 7 flat, a 7 magnum, or a double stacked 7 magnum which will hold 14 needles in total. The vegan at the end reminded me of working on sea shepherd ships and there were a lot of hardcore straight edge people that were super tatted up and I borrowed one of their tattoo machines to do a dagger that I totally fucked and thankfully mostly fell out. Everyone told me the lines were too tight and it was too tight of a design but my cocky dumbass was like "I draw daggers all the time, it won't be hard to tattoo" I hadn't even practiced on fake skin or an orange 😂 literally the first line I put down went from too deep and blown out to too shallow and falling out and the needle was binding as I tried to do it. I didn't even know how to properly set the machine up 😂 Made about every mistake you could make in a tattoo besides misspelling something but thankfully it's mostly faded and I'm gonna get it covered up at some point. The Squidward is pretty janky but decent for a noob scratcher's second tattoo on skin and I'm not even that great at drawing. I also got "skate and destroy" stick and poked around my wrist in a faunt I designed but in another case of not listening to people that knew better the guy said it would be better to do solid letters rather than outlines and I was like "nah I can always fill it in later" woulda looked way better if I had listened 😂 so three out of four tattoos I have were done on a ship with a bunch of vegans cause what else to do when you're stuck in a dock in a rural part of Mexico? My one professionally done tattoo is an American traditional fouled anchor with a banner with my first serious girlfriends initials, she dumped me a month later 😂 her initials are ART though so can kinda play it off but I own the stupidity and she also got married so her initials are different now anyways. Also got the anchor before I joined the ship and in sailor tattoo culture an anchor is supposed to be for your sweetheart and also means you've crossed the Atlantic which I only got to do because after we broke up I had no idea what to do with myself and joined sea shepherd and ended up crossing the Atlantic. Also on the vegan thing I had several crew mates complain about me swatting flies in the mess hall because all the dead fish we were getting covered in from removing illegal nets in the marine sanctuary we were protecting were attracting flies and I just about threw a fit. I was like "really guys you're gonna get mad at me cause I don't want flies crawling on my food? I'm pretty sure most tattoo inks aren't technically vegan and there's literally bigger fish to fry here" Anyways to sum it all up: vegans can be super annoying, traditional tattoos done right are sick (even with ex's initials in them), and I'm too dumb to listen to good advice so I live with the consequences of that lifestyle 😂

I’ve been getting 3 sessions a week on my arm for a few months, since it’s blackout, colour and realism with filler that also takes ages to do lol also got micro realism sections

If this worked reliability it would be kinda cool to where you'd basically only have visible tattoos outside during the day if UV activataes it and white light deacrivates it but the examples they were showing looked like hot garbage. Might as well just get henna cause it looks like a more burgundy red shitty version of henna.

I think the Butterfly/Moth argument is a personal thing, I prefer Moths because I like dark things, I prefer the moon to the sun the night to the day the Raven over the Dove and so on..but as you say you prefer Butterflys which are cool too but just not for everyone imo, a little feminine for my style tbh but nothing wrong with that if that's your preference. Jmo also. I know many will disagree with my " feminine " line. And everyone has their own preference to do so.

As upset as I was with the viking kitty cat tat 😂😂😂 it made me smile and could be fixed probably pretty easily with an actual good artist. Theres no fucking black in it 😂😂😂

Could the artist who created the tattoo with the peach flowers redo them when they fade?

I think the second one, although not done great but i think it is a Viking Beserker. They used to wear animal skins into battle to take the spirit of the animal with them..But I would of chose a Northern European animal if so...Then again, Viking got everywhere and traded everywhere..just my thoughts. I could be 100% wrong. And the line work of it isn't good.

Color theory isn’t guessing. It’s color theory and something I assumed would be basic knowledge among tattooers but I guess not lol It’s definitely something that makes a difference though. How can it not when a layer of the person’s skin will be over the tattoo once it’s healed?

10:08 I thought she was referring more to ignorant style tattoos. They're purposefully meant to look like a child/ bad artist has done them, and that's what most scratchers do best 🤔
