Motorhome Mods : Trailering a Scooter behind our Motorhome

- The day after we had our towbar fitted by Mick Parkinson at Motorhome Towbars in Freckleton, Lancs we travelled back to Ross-On-Wye area which is the home of CMF Trailers who make a 'side-load' motorcycle trailer. We wanted to keep the trailer size as short as possible and the ability to side load the scooter provides that option as the trailer is only 65 inches in length.
CMF trailers, owned by Philip Hodges, provided an excellent service on the phone and the lead in time from order was only 3 weeks. They were more competitive than other trailer makers we tried and were great to deal with at their workshop near Ross-On-Wye on collection day.

Just something to be mindful of...When going up a steep incline from the flat ie a ferry, make sure your jockey wheel is up as high as you can get it and in a straight line in case it turns the jockey wheel. I have the same style of trailer and carry my Vespa 300 ( 160kg). Last year we took it too Europe using the ferry from Dover to Calais. Some of the Ramps are very steep both up and down to the decks and we got the occasional scrape of the Jockey wheel. I notice you have a VB air assist so that should help especially if you have a long overhang as our 7.5M Pilote did.

If you watched our film about my tyre blowout and recovery on a flat bed - we didn’t have the VB then and it would have been VERY useful on that occasion as it was a bit nail biting winching the van up the flat bed!!

We’ll make sure we do a film of our first trip out Retro!! When I had the Ifor Williams on the back of my pick up - that will hopefully give me a starter for ten in respect of going backwards!! The scooter is actually pretty quiet - unlike the Harley!

Almost a year on, how you getting on with the scooter? I sold our C400GT BMW scooter and regret that decision, so thinking about the same as yours as a replacement. Great vlog btw, thanks.
Many thanks for that David and the Pegasus has been great. It carries us both easily and can get to 60-70mph on motorways if required albeit we do more pottering in the mountains - again it's had no problems two up on the hills, which have been steep in places!!
We've only done about 1200 miles but it's so easy to get parts for and service kits to do it yourself. There's a site called CMPO at : www.cmpoparts.com/
you can buy service kits and every single piece of the scooter in exploded diagram format so really easy to work with!!
All in all I can't fault it at all David - a long way from my Harley or Jap bike days but a game changer for the motorhome!!

Hi There - just looking into a scooter for our new to us MH, quite like these transverse trailers. Can I ask have you been to Europe (France) with it yet? If so did you have any issue with police/customs transporting the bike on a trailer? Post Brexit there seems to be some confusion about paperwork etc. Really appreciate any advice if you can. Yes if you watch our last two series of films we have taken it to Europe last spring and Autumn (2023) 😀
I also saw those bits of legislation but if it is just for personal use and on the trailer there were no additional paper work requirements for customs, either end, apart from taking the usual licence, insurance doc and V5 and ensuring your insurance has European cover which most do. Customs haven’t asked about the trailer or bike at all on each crossing, by tunnel or ferry, or even looked under its cover. I think as it’s on the back of a motorhome it’s self evident it’s not for resale or import or racing or other uses that did require additional papers that I think you’re referring to, and that’s why customs aren’t interested in it at all.
I did also get a CritAir sticker for the scooter as if we go into cities it would be by scooter as it’s a LOT easier!! Some of the cities now have the CritAir scheme and that number will only increase, so the sticker, once obtained, lasts for the vehicles life so worth getting for the 3 or 4 quid it costs.
There’s another film on our channel about the the CritAir process for the motorhome , which also applies to the scooter, if you needed more info 😀. Remember you only need to display CritAir stickers if you go INTO one of these relevant zones - it’s fairly easy to avoid those areas and if you do you DO NOT need a CritAir sticker at all.
incidentally a lot of the sites we stayed at in the UK and Europe didn’t class the 1.6 metre transverse trailer (1.6 from back of van to rear of trailer) as a ‘trailer’ per se as it’s so short and we weren’t charged the ‘trailer premium’ advertised on lots of sites - indeed I ask for a 9m pitch so I didn’t have to detach the trailer if I didn’t want to as it’s locked on to the moho, and secure. It does balance itself if detached and still loaded so can be detached quickly if a shorter pitch.

From what I can see, the bike on a trailer thing is still a grey area but as you say if you have all the documents and a return ferry ticket plus the fact its on the back of a MH you should be ok.

Bob, this is something that I can only dream of now, as wife just wants one of those folding electric bikes and is scared to travel on a motorbike/scooter of any kind.
I take it that you have a full license for using your scooter?
Hi Drew, Nicky & I both have full motorcycle licenses. We used to ride Harleys…I had a tourer and Nicky had a Sportster. Sorry that it’s just a dream for you now…but you never know!!

The trailer has been great - you can just see the corners via wing mirrors when reversing or can do it from the rear camera entirely. It’s really light to wheel around and can be moved with the bike on it when detached from the van. Added the spare wheel just in case. It can store upright and didn’t cost much more on the ferry as it was sub 2 metres long - all in all great for this 170kilo scoot 😁😁
is there storage under seat for helmets looks same as Yamaha xmax 300
There is indeed Colin - room for two helmets and the fluorescent jackets plus other small bits that can go in the gaps so really good for that. We put a fairly small box on the back carrier but the same carrier takes larger boxes too if we wanted to upsize the box :) When I was looking across all the brands the Lex seemed almost too good to be true being so much cheaper than Honda or Yam etc but it really has been excellent so far :))
@@motorhomingadventures I was just about to put deposit down on the Yamaha X Max 300. When I see this video I think I might buy exactly the same set up. I don’t know where to get a CM trailer or Armitages do you have an opinion?
@@powderpuff1964 CMF trailers I think were running until April this year but I might be wrong www.cmftrailers.co.uk/ otherwise ebay I guess would be a good bet perhaps - I think the Lex is great value and dead easy to work on :))
@@motorhomingadventures as you said lex Is easy to work with and I will have very similar to you but with the box on the bag for the straps I must’ve made that CF does look very nice and the website looks good too. How long did it take you from start ordering to get you the unit does he need your motorhome there before you order for all these questions
