Tbh, Jimmy's moral decline hurt me much more to witness than Walter's. Because Jimmy for a while genuinely tried to be a decent man, make a name for himself, but his brother kepts ruining his effort. Had Chuck not been there to hinder his growth, I feel like he may have managed to remain an honest, hard-working lawyer, despite his past. It's a shame he chose to go down the path he did.
Nah, he sabbotaged himself more than Chuck ever did. He got the dream job in Davis and Main and pissed it away for no good reason. Mike told him not to get involved with Walter but he did it anyway. He just marches to the beat of his own drum.
its heavily implied that walt was trying way harder for way longer to be a decent man, and he was actually capable of keeping that up reasonably well. it would've just been quite boring to watch him teach high school chemistry, raise a kid with cerebral palsy and be married to skyler for 18 years... jimmy is a way more ambiguous character than early walt. his cancer diagnosis kickstarted his other, darker side, while jimmy had it in him all along.
@@IIIRobIII Walter had it in him all along too, I think. Resentment that built up over the years, hatred for people he thinks took what was rightfully his, feeling underappreciated. I'm definitely not trying to justify either one of them, but Jimmy's moral decline still hurt me more than Walter's.
The ultimate tragedy here is that at the end, Jimmy took the blame for everything and no one cared. He was the moral fall guy for the BB universe. And he was the only one strong enough to face it all. Everyone else ran away.
To be fair most of the others who could take the fall for it were dead, or in the case of Jesse, had arguably suffered plenty and hadn't contributed as much as Jimmy did.
“Have a nice life Kim” Damn that line made me realize how their relationship could never be salvaged or comeback from the trauma of being responsible for the death of Howard.
I think it's kind of genius that the writers took a line so throw away, and made one of the most captivating, fearful villains I've ever witnessed in a TV show. Lines like "LALO didn't send you, no LALO??" make it possible to watch the shows in either order and it all makes sense with the same amount of impact. Incredible writing.
I think that’s because we spend more time getting to know Jimmy, and see him get pushed around a lot more. That, and Jimmy never actually directly led to the death of a person, and he’s much more charismatic than Walter.
@@foxernator yes, but he never ordered anyone to be killed, or directly did an action that resulted in the death of another. I was merely pointing out that for most people, and even in the legal system, the person who pulls the trigger or orchestrates a murder is much more guilty, and seen as worse than the person who was also committing crimes with the person, or knew about it but didn’t directly kill anyone.

I really liked the Chuck and Jimmy dynamic. I can see why Chuck is hated so much, but I personally thought of him as a tragic character. He was a great lawyer who was self made, he truly fought for what he believed in, and tried his absolute best to uphold the law and defend the innocent, and he was suffering from what is still being debated in the medical field, but has been leaning towards being classified as a psychological disorder masquerading as a physical condition. He did harbor obvious ill will towards Jimmy, but it’s understandable why. He always did the best he could to make a name for himself, and to help his parents, but in the end he knows they always liked Jimmy more. Chuck had to work hard to get where he was, while Jimmy always tried to cut corners or take the easy way out, and he was jealous of him for both of these reasons. It was a clash between deontological morality, and consequentialism morality that tore their relationship apart. Jimmy just wanted Chuck to be proud of him, and cared for him in his time of need, and Chuck wanted Jimmy to always walk the straight and narrow, and spent the earlier part of his life bailing him out. I like both characters and can see both perspectives, it’s just a shame they could never see each other’s. In the end Chuck was partially correct, “The law is sacred! You abuse that power and people get hurt!”
@Luke JTM I meant to say “neurological or psychological”. It’s really being recognized as a somatosensory illness, which comes about when the brain is under too much stress, and physical symptoms begin arising, even though there is nothing physically wrong with the body. Thanks for completely missing the point though.
@Luke JTM this is why I clarified by talking about somatosensory illnesses, which result from too much stress in the brain. It causes people to feel as if there is something wrong with parts of their body, but it’s really just caused by stress in the brain messing with nerves. I’ve been studying psychology for school, and somatosensory problems were a big component in misdiagnosis among the medical field for what is actually a psychological problem. I appreciate the clarification on my poorly worded comment, but your response made it seem like the intrapersonal relationship of Jimmy and Chuck wasn’t the main focus. I apologize for my harsh and unwarranted jab towards you.
He’s the complete opposite of what an older brother should be. He sabotaged Jimmy from the start, didn’t take him seriously when Jimmy was trying to be serious. Brothers naturally fight and hold grudges, but Chuck was an absolute piece of shit for an older brother. Hope he regretted knocking the lantern over and suffered every second of being burnt to a crisp.
@@dylanhealy8126 I guess that’s one perspective… I think he got tired of Jimmy because he always bailed him out, and his psychological problems probably compounded it. Like I said, I can see both sides.
