As much as every part of my musical taste, refined by years of training, experience, and several university degrees is screaming, NO....506 likes don't lie. This is f*****g awesome
@@cmw12 Because this is a very violin-y violin piece, something of the piece's essential character is lost in the act of transcription, doing a disservice to both the piece and the performing ensemble. The whole chordal/bariolage section of the original can only be roughly approximated with the trombones and has nowhere near the same effect, to name one example. Superficially, the difference between what makes the solo violin interesting as a compositional choice, (one person, chords, extreme dexterity, breathless, variety of timbres, etc.) and what makes the trombone quintet interesting, (many people, sustained by breath, dynamic contrast, forceful, etc.) on its own makes it difficult, again speaking superficially, to take the work seriously. In other words, there is a comical mismatch between the musical material, and the medium carrying it. I wish that the Trombone repertoire could have enough masterpieces of their own so that there would be no need to do transcriptions...I mean, how cool would it be if violinists were doing transcriptions of Trombone quintet repertoire!! But my real point is that damn, these guys really make it work. Incredible artistry, and it's awesome that 529 people recognized that. @@EdgarFGirtainIV No one is putting this arrangement on the same footing as the original, and I think Bach himself would like it, if only as an experiment.
Americans make Bach sound like Mahler. I'm sorry, because their playing is technically perfect and the tone and chords beautiful. But as a german trombonist I don't hear Bach, it's way too heavy apart from other things. No baroque found. I won't dislike anyways, their playing is great.
I don't know that I agree with you on this. I think there is plenty of room to interpret Bach throughout he medium of other instrumentations.I think the music world would be boring if there was only "one" way to play Bach or Mahler or Mozart. We should always be open to paying tribute to the masters by interpreting their work through a slightly different lens than they intended. After all, five trombones are never going to sound like a single violin, nor should they. Doesn't mean we don't love Bach!
I think it’s an interesting transcription that emphasizes some of the essential characteristics of the trombone quite nicely. I won’t argue that it’s the most “Chaconne” Chaconne, but damn if it isn’t good
I'm a simple music lover.
I see Chaconne+UnusualInstrument: I click.
I love trombones!

What exactly would your objection have been?

I'm sure you handle the quadruple stops like a charm;-)

To try to merit any mentionable level of criticism of this performance speaks negatively of you. In my humble opinion.
They’re obviously evoking a large organ. Which can sound this heavy easily.
That's funny because Mahler is Austrian. I don't understand what being American has to do with anything here.
