Anyone else seen the updated ones MULTIPLE TIMES??? The first ones were perfect but....... Man this is new level... Thanks for letting me end the year with my favorite youtuber.
Yes! I know this is an update of a previous video but I don't think the Heian Period gets nearly enough attention outside of Japan and I'm super excited to see more videos like this. And while I feel a bit bad shamelessly plugging my own stuff, I have to say my favorite stories I've put out the ones about the Heian warriors are my favorite. Stories about early warriors like Taira no Masakado and Minamoto no Yorinobu are not only interesting in their own right, but they also give some insight into the origins of the ethos and values of Japan's warriors. Great stuff sir, and if you're still planning on coming to Japan be sure to let me know.
I have watched many of your videos. But this one has too many names to keep track of who's who even for someone with a good memory. You need a detailed diagram, shown often as things change; much more useful than paintings.
I totally agree. This one was really difficult to even research based on how complex it was. I'm not sure if a diagram would have helped in a video but certainly for a book/article/website I could see that helping immensely.
Great video! Hopefully you give Yoshitsune justice in the next episode which should logically be Genpei War. He is extremely overlooked by both the Japanese and the West, while being arguably in the top 3 most influential warriors of Japanese history.
Did the samurai really take control of Japan, or was it just the top warrior families? I think the answer depends on how one defines samurai. If samurai refers only to the highest ranking warrior houses, then yes they ruled. However, if samurai referred to every warrior then, are they really the ruling class? At this point it seems that Taira no Kiyomori took control of the court, more than samurai taking control as a class.

The 2012 Taiga series "Taira no Kiyomori" is my favorite and covers all the events of this period. I highly recommend it (if you can find it!)

The Kuge and emperors were morons when it came to war...
Winning takes care of the moral implications
