Every mac user should be using Time Machine. Easiest way to get back to previous OS.
I updated the trashcan to to Catalina, then used timemachine to roll back within hours, life saver. I then installed Catalina on a separate APFS partition(dual booting like the windows partition on bootcamp) it never worked for music production in my experience. I have kept that partition up to date and with Big Sur I started getting disk compatibility warnings when I booted into mojave. The bigsur partition no longer appears in my boot drives list in start up disk menu, I have to option key at start up to use Bigsur (which I almost never do, first signs of end of life). so glad I didn't invest in the rack mount 2019( It was close but the Catalina put me off). I wonder how long the trash can will last? It rarely gets beyond 50%cpu so...
But if it's your new computer time machine will not help correct?
@@joebotz1243 Correct. If you buy a new Mac computer then it will not be compatible with any older macOS version than the one it ships with.
“The version of macOS that came with your Mac is the earliest version it can use. For example, if your Mac came with macOS Big Sur, it can't use macOS Catalina or earlier. If a macOS isn't compatible with your device, the App Store or installer will let you know. If you try to install a macOS that is older than the version currently installed, the installer will say that it is too old to be opened on this version of macOS.”

Very wise advice. When I was still making a living doing audio engineering I had a cheese grater MacPro and through all the years I used it I NEVER updated the OS. It worked it was all configured the way I liked it so I didn't upgrade it. Apple never made a change that made it worth messing with my working production computer.
what about if you want to buy new plugins
as of Aug. 1st, 2022, would you still not recommend upgrading to monterey?
I have learned the hard way to wait to update Mac OS when a new version is released. It’s always best to run version behind. Apple does always implement the latest technology but developers of vital software don’t always keep up. One software that I depend on just released its Big Sur compatible update. So no way will it be ready for Monterey any time soon.

I'm running Monterey, and haven't noticed any differences, compatibility-wise, between Monterey and Big Sur. I use Logic and several 3rd party plugins.
That being said, I completely agree with you. 👍
Mostly everything works on my end as well, but for some reason iCan't upload audio files to Logic some reason. I tried dragging it in AND importing it. Nothing works 😩

Convert to wav or aif to make playable on your DAW. Took me a few hours to figure out.

I never have this problem on Windows. I even upgraded to the Windows 11 Beta and have no problems with my DAW and plugins.
I don't know why people say MacOS is better, when you can't upgrade the OS and don't break your software.
To be fair…windows 10 has been around for around a decade…maybe more…they don’t do major overhauls every year like Apple does…but Macs are just a bit more suited and optimized for multimedia production…expensive yes…sucks that they can’t just leave the OS be for the next 10 years…but I’d still go with a Mac even an older one before I’d buy a new PC…just my 2 pennies
@@Johnmike Windows 10 has been around from 2015 and Windows 11 is being released next month (even though I'm running the beta).
I think Apple should at least make every piece of software (that has been updated in the past 2 years) compatible with at least the latest version of MacOS.
On Windows, I know I can even run software from 10 years ago (I tried it with Reason 5, and it worked with a simple patch).
The only thing on MacOS that is better is the default audio Core Audio driver. Even though on Windows, ASIO driver is just as good, it's third party

I’ve been wrestling with staying on Windows and moving to Apple. I don’t really like MacOS but see I can run Windows on it and not vice versa I may try to stick to Apple. If I don’t like it in a few years I will just move back to PC.
@@Sikt This is not a M1 problem. The same can be said for every previous version of MacOS running an Intel chip.

In the early 1990's I was totally cool with dropping $400 on a 270Mb Syquest cartridge, or $1000 for a 10Mb RAM upgrade for an Ensoniq sampler. Fast forward to 2013 ... I buy a Retina thingy MBP 13" for a "trivial" $1800 (ish). Here we are in 2021, still on the same laptop, I'm rocking Logic Pro X, Xcode, 3 adult kids at home, an 8 year old with a near-permanent Minecraft monologue, two dogs, and zero care to upgrade. I reckon I'll stroll by a M4 2024 MBP and squeeze 13 years out of this rig.
I'm in Catalina purgatory with zero problems.
Restraint AND careful purchasing EQUALS longevity in tech.

Good to see another vid like your last one. I've been debating upgrading to Big Sur now that Monterey is hitting the market. I've decided to keep my main computer (iMac 2019) on Catalina since I use it for all my video production, audio production, etc. Also, I use my Avid Eleven Rack with it. But the Eleven Rack Editor app isn't very compatible with Big Sur as far as I'm aware, and I need it to work so that I can upload and save presets to and from my 11R; there's basically no other way to do this without it.
On the other hand, I mainly use my MacBook Air (Mid-2015, Catalina) as my primary writing machine since it only has 4GB of RAM and doesn't function well as a music/video machine. So I may go ahead and update it to Big Sur soon. I also don't frequently use my laptop and main computer together very often, so I hope I won't have to worry about Catalina and Big Sur compatibility between computers if I ever decide to.
Maybe you could do a video about this sort of issue-keeping one computer with one OS and upgrading a different one and their ability to work (or not work) together. It would be nice to hear some thoughts on this subject.

Mojave works pretty well for me. it’s the fastest workflow. Everything works like charm; Kontakt, Daw’s, Adobe stuff everything. Thanks John!

Update Nov. 19 (2021): I downgraded My Mac to Mojave. I recovered the Mac with Internet Recovery and now it's fully functional. Not falling for that mistake AGAIN (I recovered EVERYTHING thank God)

I just bought the new MacBook Pro and it came with Mac OS Monterey by default and none of my plugins are working. Bought it because my 2011 MacBook Air wasn’t cutting it with logic anymore and now I’ll have to go back to recording on that old one just to use the hundreds of dollars of plugins I’ve purchased. Really Sucks, spent 4 grand on a device that isn’t compatible with the main tools I use to mix and master
100% amen. Have used macs for decades and working on a new mac running Monterey has been despicable. Blacklisted VSTs, and the 'feel' overally is sludgy. Every. Single. Thing. I go BACK to my older mac and it flies. Crazy!

@@Akufenx I never had issues with high sierra, but it's now the age issue. omg even as we speak am having issues (plug ins not responding, all sorts! Monterey is awful ha ha :) )
When I was on Windows, producing video’s. I remember so many times the automatic updates that I couldn’t always shut off disabled 3rd party software every few days... would take an hour or so to circumvent the updates that I couldn’t disable. So I ended up keeping windows box off the internet once I got the video cards, adobe etc all working. Apple does it to, but nearly as bad... but yes I’m in a habit of getting everything working and NOT UPDATING ANYTHING unless I REALLY NEED TO! Honestly sometimes it’s better to just buy a newer computer. (Of wow, you just said you can get an computer to update to stay current... just what I was about to say). That and I find it good to have a music computer and a video editing computer... so when your using 1 computer for something, everything is hardware/software and physically different desk to work on that thing, and the other computer for video editing with different hardware and accessories and os etc. that and it tricks you to work on that project... sort of like the gym vs home gym. If you go to the gym you commit to exercise for an hour vs if it’s a home gym and you do 10 minutes and then check your email, get another coffee... watch youtube etc.
big ups for mojave! still the most stable system for music production even in 2022.
I had to buy a refurbished Macbook with Mojave on it because I made the mistake of updating in 2021.

@mikhailkonstantinov3168 I almost did that. For me it was wiser to just install Mojave with time machine onto the newer MacBook. I couldn't afford to wait 8 to 9 hours to downgrade to the previous version when it was my only Macbook/laptop at the time. Having two allows to me to still be productive when there's some technical issue. I took that advice from a guy who works I'm IT

I'am using iMac 2019 21.5 and it's works best with MacOS Mojave! I'm glad that i'm not the only person to understand this. Really!
I tried to upgrade even to Catalina, buuuut... You know? Maybe i leave my iMac with Mojave forever, because it's the FASTEST OS for After Effects, animations, video editing, creating music etc.
For the record i'm using iMac 2019 21.5 with i3 32GB RAM 4GB VRAM and external SSD.

Well. It already happened. My computer did it itself. I don’t even know how to like articulate on that. I just hit space bar on my computer and it suddenly hit that first login screen with the new OS background. And I didn’t create a backup cause that hasn’t been a pressing thing. So. I don’t really know what to do. I’m gonna try to create a backup in time machine and try to roll back to Big Sure/OS 11 if that’s even possible. Lmk if that’s stupid

Even BigSur(it screwed up my Audio system, I have to restart it multiple times before audio ever goes through) is still so unstable, never understood why they would expand without fixing problems from the past. Thanks for the tips though John!

Are you using Monterey? I am also a PC user, looking to purchase my first Mac. I found one one barely used, for a great deal, but It's on Monterey 12.0. I'm getting it for the sole purpose of running Adobe (Lightroom and Photoshop). Would love some advice before I pull the trigger!
@@am11ish I ended up getting it working, it’s amazing. Just make sure you use the silicone chip installer from Adobe. Enjoy I highly recommend!!

I called Apple Support about upgrading my 2018 MacBook Pro and was told it was “safe” - then the install “bricked” the machine - at first the Apple Store told me I would have to pay $600 the fix the machine but a follow up with Apple Support verified that I had called and gone over the Build, Storage (130GB) and Admin privileges… are replacing my machine. CALL 1st!!!

I have a MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2019, Four Thunderbolt 3 ports) which I used for music production, running macOS Mojave 10.14.6. It was the most powerful MacBook I could acquire that could run 32-bit plugins.
I no longer have the need to run 32-bit plugins or programs, but I would appreciate knowing the best OS to upgrade to. I have an iPhone XR running iOS 16.6, and each successive update is undoubtedly causing some unresponsiveness. My theory is each device has an optimal OS, balancing speed and features. Also, I've seen some people running Sylenth1 on Sonoma, so it appears a work around has been reached.

Man I'm legit going back to the previous update now, I got a new Mac and hit the update and all my music programs and vst is trippen. Glitches and lagging which makes no sense considering I got the top of the line mac with plenty of memory and 64 gigs of ram. Never again

yeahhh, wish I got triple reminded about this, I always knew in the back of my head to not update. But for some reason my brain was a little smooth this cycle and thought it wouldn't be a super huge deal...
Not just 3rd party plugin issues, now I'm having a lot of issues with strange inconsistent CPU spikes, hung MIDI notes stuck on every time I use cycle (that for some reason don't respond to MIDI panic shortcuts), and several crashes.

Great video John and info! I’m still on High Sierra with my 2010 MacBook Pro using Logic Pro 10.4. I know I’m a little behind with it all, but for now it’s working. But I’d like to upgrade to the Mac Mini because of its better performance. You said it comes with Big Sur as the OS, has Logic ran smoothly for you and the plug ins? I’m going to be getting Omnisphere 2.6 and Albion One for more modern sounds and film composing. Will the new Mac mini and Big Sur be able to run those. Please advise, thank you😎👍🏾

This is good advice, although quite a few years back I didn't have major issues upgrading MACOS it was in fact much safer and simpler than windows. Over the last few years this has not been the case though and have had to wait a long time for compatibility. However hoping that's just because Apple have been making the transition to Apple Silicon and that this version and/or future versions will not have as many compatibility headaches.
I was going to keep using Catalina until it started randomly going black and staying black for 5 minutes plus with full battery. Also HDR videos were white. Problem stopped after Big Sur.

running m1 macbook air and a thunderbolt interface everything was gravy. lightning vst latency. my logicboard failed and apple repaired it just ouside warranty thank god. cameback with monterrey and now my interfaces midi i/o is glitched out holding and dropping notes like mad. reverting back to big sur tomorrow fingers crossed. so yeah it wont just jack your software. but your hatdware 2. you can do it without time machine u need big sur in bootable form on a external drive , peace!
I upgraded to monterey just yesterday and garageband is not opening up on my 2014 mac mini.
True and huge bugs in any new OS, Trubble with Windows is that they auto update but I still would not use Apple os or Computor. Even when Adoid update My tablet it ruins the function of My music apps.

Wish I had known this. I just bought a brand new M1 it's the most expensive single purchase i have ever made. Thought ill update it right away so everything is at its best. It's my first Mac expierience too. Everyone told me Yeah Mac is great for audio and whatnot. Nothing works. It's honestly the worst expierience i have ever had with any new device. First i had to get a new interface because the old one wasn't compatible, now i bought one specifically one running core audio, and now it just crashes after 10 minutes if it works at all. Fuck this shit. Seriously. How the fuck does it not work with a class compliant device? Imagine Microsoft did an update that makes 90% of USB devices incompatible. The shitstorm would be unimaginable

I bought my iMac 27-Inch 2020 last week and when I got it, it was driving Monterey and I was getting HUGE performance issues while even just using the system. So I loaded up to the recovery and I downgraded on Catalina. Everything is fixed. I don’t plan to upgrade till they will have fixed all those performance and compatibility issues! And Big Sur, I HATE THE GUI. So I’m just gonna stay on Catalina probably forever (till they will fix those bullshits).
I'm trying to figure out how to get Logic Pro X now on Catalina... I'm afraid to buy it and being forced to upgrade... I saw that Big Sur also got HUGE performance issues.

Your right, John Mike! I'm experiencing quite a few issues with LPX & FCPX on a Mac mini w M1 (2020). It is frustrating trying to learn these software apps when they arent working right. I've been sending feedback to Apple. Great advice you're giving. I am having better success on my old Mac Book Pro laptop & the older iOS.

There’s no way to downgrade past Catalina if you do upgrade. Also keep ur windows partition otherwise you may not be able to do it again. I’ve lost mine. My Mac life is over.

Hi John. I wish I had seen your video before. I upgraded my iMac from Mojave to Monterey and I have many problems. In fact, no driver for my interface audio…I am installing Mojave again through a bootable USB I created with my MBAir which remains with Mojave. But how can install Logic Pro with Mojave if I bought it in Apple Store? They mention you need macOS 11 at least…but I want stay in Mojave. Any help please?

Making you the master using Monterey is a challenge. The thing that drives me nuts is my screen goes dark, even when I've set it to not time out. You can barely see the screen, then go to set the brightness, and it's been turned to to a minimum. Happens every time I'm using it. Go over everything in your system preferences. Today I set the screen to never dim. Let's see. By the way, I immediately downloadied Google to handle the web.
Just recently got my first macbook ever which had Monterey on it already ... from my experience:
Akai MPK249 is fully incompatible (Using the original cable with a USB Adapter = Just enough power to light ut up but no control at all) and
FL is running glitchy and all plugins are showing errors ... (Running FL in Rosetta mode fixes the issue completely).

So I’m eating my words. I upgraded to Big Sur a couple of days ago and I’m glad I did. It runs much smoother than Catalina and my AIR Minigrand plug in no longer crashes Logic when opening like it did on Catalina. Also, all of my other plug ins (Arturia, UAD after installing new driver, U-He, Kontakt, etc) all work perfectly on Big Sur for me. What I’m learning is that it’s best to stay at least an OS behind to give developers time to catch up to the new OS. If I upgrade to Monterey it won’t be until this time next year or pretty close to it.
Hi- stumbled upon your 2yr old video. I bought my MacBook Pro May 2018-it looks to be the 2017 model. 13” ? Touch pad. My telehealth dr told me to install zoom-why? Their waiting room works fine. To do this my laptop said I needed Ventura-totally messed everything up.Then,the Mac zoom is not compatible, tech support was just horrible and so many changes were made that I can’t get all my original settings back.
I’m at a loss because I now have No system preferences and I’m losing my mind
because I literally don’t know how to fix anything and don’t know how to downgrade to previous version-Monterey? Right? I’ve spent days ( and I mean 12hrs at a time) 😢on this since 2/25/24. It’s driving me insane that I can’t fix this.
FYI: I’ve not used Time Machine, only once, and I don’t know that either!
I hope you can help. Usually, I can figure it out, but things are getting beyond my scope. I’ve never used zoom and really think it’s a bad idea for the health profession to use what I feel is not secure and soon to be obsolete also?
This here will become the next issue besides above downgrade and ability to use zoom with telehealth uh 🙄…
To let you know, if this helps… I was using iCloud on my iPhone, X-loved it, but when I purchased the 14 pro Verizon -1year ago-connected all my devices (5) to the cloud-I don’t know how to use the cloud and don’t like that I can’t see my photos,etc. My personal WD CLOUD SERVER(obsolete and no longer supported as of July 2023, and backups all seem obsolete)???
I can’t even figure out how to get stuff off other laptops, storage (stuff-can’t find the right word). Thousands of dollars of electronics and I can’t figure out any of this as this point. Which electronics do I keep?

my akai professional mpk keyboard won't work even though it worked a couple days ago it keeps saying something needs updated and I can't even work on music projects at all.
I just downgraded to Mojave and have gone back to working on Garageband 10.3.5 (which I'm very happy with) but I've found that projects I'd saved on GB 10.4.8 will no longer open, telling me they "can’t load this project because it is created by a newer GarageBand version".
Any solves for that?

I record my own music on my 2015 macbook pro. What do you recommend OS, mojave or catalina? And Can ı downgrade monterey to catalina or mojave without formating disk?
Using M1 Max 32GB 4TB MacBook here, ( medium sized projects: around 150 tracks of vsti plugins and kontakt instances )
Cubase 10.5 runs very smoothly, Logic on the other hand is a little buggy.
Also all the VST plugins work in cubase but some AU plugins don’t work in Logic. I’m running everything thru Rosetta.
Only thing I miss is Virtual Guitarist 2 which is a 32bit plugin and Slate VSX that doesn’t work on Monterey at all. Everything else runs smoothly.

What year is your MacBook? Final cut and Logic are working just fine with my iMac M1 and Monterey.
I actually have the new M1 pro MacBook Pro…yea logic works…final cut works…but if you depend on 3rd party plugins a lot aren’t working yet
@@Johnmike got me there… I’m not into the use of much 3rd party plug-ins, mostly because the don’t update them very often. It seems that the pressure should go on those developers to keep their plugins up to date with the apps that run them. Technology will always move forward. If they want to stay in the game they need to play. Just my opinion.

Hello I'm new to MacBooks and just got a MacBook air 2017 from my sister and when she factory reset it it went back to sierra but I wanted to get to a newer o.s but not the newest but only had the option to go all the way to Monterey and upgraded to Monterey minutes before seeing this video. Can anyone tell me how to downgrade to bigsur or atleast something more recent instead of going all the way back to sierra please?

I'm switching to pc. I use studio one and updated to this update on my Mac mini. Everything runs so much slower and studio one cant even run properly. Lags and is super choppy. Mac has always been atrocious and it's interface is confusing. Lucky for me studio one runs on windows so I'm good. I was just rapping up a mixtape too and now imovie isn't working properly to post on to RUclips. Steve job sucks and I'm switching and saving my waves to put onto windows. Horrible experience with Mac and recommend everyone to not use them unless you have too. Omg super lame.

I upgraded before I bought my UA Apollo twin and it won’t work. Strangely it worked last night but not working today doesn’t even show up as an option anymore. I hope they fix this soon I just paid $1400 for my interface.
