That's after getting rid of a truck and trailer load of stage gear. I find that about 10 of my guitars get significantly more playing time than the rest. Lastly, the proper amount of guitars can be calculated by always adding one more to your current collection (N+1)! Cheers!

I`ve actually made the decision to reduce my guitar collection "What!!!." I can hear you all screaming at me, but yes, there`s a lot of truth in the term "Less is More." and I`d far sooner have less guitars that I play more often, than a load that I`m barely touching from one week to the next, for me these days, its about quality, not quantity. 6 to 8 very nice quality guitars is plenty, I simply don`t need 20+ average or budget models, and when I say quality, I don`t mean high end names, (eg, Gibson, Fender, Martin etc.) I just mean very nice playable instruments, with a mix of names on the headstocks, but each of them at sensible prices, I don`t care what they`re called, its how they play & sound. 😎🎸 x8.

So if the switch was making a blend between bridge-middle & neck-middle like tou said you would actually notice a huge reduction in volume in the between positions 2 & 4. This doesn't happen on my guitar and it is proof that the humbuckers actually split into single coils in those positions. Cheers

Ah, yeah, those Floyd Rose's and string breaks do NOT mix very well! That's why I'm leaning towards getting my friend's Tele for my live solo gigs. No floating trem and just a simple workhorse for the stage. For bass, man, check out the LTD D5 I have. It's a solid bass and sounds awesome! I've got all of my gear listed on this page: www.jasonstallworth.com/gear/
"As many as you can play at the same time, plus one." I just came up with that one LOL. WRT the actual question itself, it is really a very first world problem. Personally I think: One with a whammy bar One hard tail A short scaled one An acoustic May be active pickups on one of the electrics, or whatever other bling. That ought to be more than enough! But if someone REALLY likes guitars, why not have as many as they want?
6 string (black)Ibanez Gio series dual pickup tone control bass - 4 string(blue and white) Peavey Milestone bass- 6 string (black and red) Ibanez Gio Series / 6 string (white)custom Unbranded burning fire red whammy bar and red killbutton / 6 string (dark walnut stain)Mitchell 3/4 scale All electric.
@@jasonstallworth it’s one of my favorites I’ve had -dual humbuckers with a single coil in middle 5 way switch , whammy bar floats nice doesn’t take the intonation and tune to far out getting on it . Added a killbutton for some rhythmic variation . And it was my least expensive guitar purchase. There a channel out there where the guy just slams the guitar calls it trash unplayable I believe he said but he is dead wrong . It sounded great out the box and even better after a minor setup and some adjustments from factory . It’s a work horse bottom line and the body design is just sick it looks like flames what’s not metal about that
great video Jason...I own 2 Charvel...a Jackson and an EVH Frankie.....2 are tuned E standard and 2 are tuned Flat....1 is a fixed bridge which I can go to drop D in a heartbeat.....great channel bro.....
My current guitar arsenal consists of a PRS Angelica acoustic, an Epiphone Explorer Ghosthorse, an Epiphone Explorer Prophecy, and my newest, a Schecter 7 string Hellraiser. All of which I use with a Katana MK2 100. 👍👊
I have about 50 guitars in my herd, of which a baker's dozen (13) are regularly used more often than the others. Each of these guitars have a different voice that makes it best for different genres and styles. 5 are great for different heavy metals, 4 are hard blues/rock/metal/country, one is great for cleans and mild dirt, 2 for surf and funk, and one classic 80s metal and rock. Most of the rest of my guitars for use in specific conditions like 4 have drop tunings, 1 is specially built to be travel/practice guitar, 4 have a specific oddball tunings. One of my bass is a 6-string which has been retuned to an alternative B-Standard so it can be played like a regular guitar but at 4 steps below E. My shorty 4-string pj-bass has been restrung and tuned to piccolo bass to give me a higher than normal bass line. One guitar has been designed to be a test guitar with a flexible modular pickguard that allows quick changing between different pup configs and different control configs. The rest are future project guitars that will be rebuilt and heavily modded later.
I will never part with my Ibanez RG I just love it and Play it near every day. I Bought another cheaper Ibanez and installed a dimazio super distortion in bridge and an air Norton on neck and it's killer. All best from Australia 👍
I am a little more than a beginner (~2 years into guitar) and i just ordered my 4th guitar. My first was a black 1984 Explorer because it looked dope. The 2nd guitar was a 7string Explorer with Evertune bridge because i wanted to get used to a seven string guitar as early as possible and try out Evertune. Then i bought a 6 string Strat shape with a tremolo to try this out and to have a different shape for once. I put that tremolo in a fixed position though because i can no really make use of it yet. :) And just now i ordered a Les Paul because i always wanted to have one + it has the newer Fishman pickups wich wanted to try out. I wonder wich shape and tone will turn out to be my favorite once i consider myself intermediate in a couple of years.
Thats only the beginning my friend. Soon you'll find yourself walking into Guitar Center to buy a set of strings and walk out with a 5th guitar. You'll be recording and notice the volume knob sits to close to the bridge pickup, so you'll buy a sixth guitar. Welcome to the abyss, there is no way out.
Pretty sweet collection Jason. I like how different guitars can make you want to play differently, eg if I get my SG out, I want to play stuff like Black Sabbath. If it's my LTD, then it's usually metal rhythm. I've got bass as well and certainly enjoy the change and low end 🤘
Ibanez is famous for using innovative 5-way switching solutions on their SuperStrats. They've tried many different combinations of Series/Parallel phasing of humbuckers, splitting to one or other coils of a humbucker, and any combination of the above with the middle pup. For example on my 2013 Ibanex S420-BK which has 2 humbuckers, the stock 5-way configuration is: Pos5: Neck Series. Pos4: Neck Parallel. Pos3: Both Series. Pos2: Neck Split South, Bridge Split North. Pos1: Bridge Series. On my 2012 Ibanez S570DXQM-TGB which is a HSH, the 5-way is setup from the factory as: Pos5: Neck Series. Pos4: Neck Split South + Middle Pos3: Middle. Pos2: Middle + Bridge Split North. Pos1: Bridge Series. I have 3 other Ibanez, 2 RGs and a 6-string SR406 bass. The two RGs also has unusual setups. The 1986 RG450-BK us a HSH, with a standard Strat like 5-way switching, but also includes a 2-way toggle that coil splits the two humbuckers. My 1989 RG565R-CA has a 3-way switch that switches the two pups like a standard Telecaster, the oddity here is the humbucker bridge with a single coil neck. The SR406-NT bass has 2 separate volumes, one for each pup and a master set of bass, mid and treble eq pots.
Cool arsenal of guitars,I have a assembly of Ibanez guitars,a few esps,Kramer's,charvels and a few I built myself, most have custom made pickups but I always gravitate to my RG Ibanez 321 with the tone zone pickups, crisp clean and mean in my opinion.
I have two guitars. But I am not primarily a guitar player... >_> ...but I have 7 basses lol. Though to be fair, 3 are the ones I play all the time and out of those, two are my "band instruments" so one is a backup in case I break a string at a show. One is a fretless, and 2 are projects (and one might end up just being a cool museum piece from the USSR). I haven't decided if I am going to sell my 6-string Carvin, yet. The SRC6 is a special instrument tbh. So really I guess I have just 3 basses and a bunch of oddballs LOL... I've put Fishman Fluence modern soapbars in two basses and have Darkglass Tone Capsules in both of those instruments. Perfection *chef's kiss* I feel you on frets. On my two Schecter basses the frets are THICC, so are the ones on my ESP and Legator guitars. I love love love jumbo frets, once I learned how light I could fret on them I just got faster and faster; playing just got so much easier. I love that your guitars are mostly all approaching 20 years old. That's awesome. Less instrument GAS, more playing \m/(>.
It's an interesting thing stock pick ups. I've got a R565 (I think I got the numbers right ) . It has a hot rails single coil dimarzio and a dimarzio humbucker... It's the one with a reverse headstock . Mind's red with a custom flame and red fretboard markers . I love it because it's a cut price PGM in my mind !
I don't have too many guitars but I do have a couple of brands. As in Ibanez, Jackson amd Schecter. There are a couple of each brand that sound fo sweet and like you Jason said aren't going anywhere.
I think it's been a year or so, but I'm sort of in the same boat. I do have a Martin acoustic now. I sold the LTD and bought a friend's Telecaster...I need to do a video update!
Yeah all have a purpose but are also interchangeable. The only thing I really need is a back-up 7 string for when I start playing metal live. I'm only playing solo acoustic live gigs now (with a little electric, which I use either the Ibanez or my friend's Tele...that Tele is a workhorse!)
you r awesome jason i have 8 guitars lol well had sold them down to 3 and then to 1 now have 3 ibanez schecter bc rich im good and a bass is coming down the line!
I've got just 2, but may add a 3rd. One is a very crappy GST170, that I keep at work for practice on weekends with just generic amp. 2nd is a GST-E, that I've upgraded. Might step up a slot to a DMT100, rise above my Glarry's a bit :)
Very nice solo man. The number of guitars depends on the type of music and of course the tuning. If a person uses many different tunings, it is natural. But, if you are using the same tuning, there's no meaning except the single coil/humbucker pickup
My goal is to eventually have maybe a half-dozen, each one in a specific tuning fora specific purpose. 3 6-strings (E for classic metal, Eb for Weezer/Morbid Angel/etc and D for "modern" metal) two sevens (one standard, one half-step down for Morbid Angel) and a beater acoustic 6 for camp. Maybe a 6-string in C# for Sabbathy stuff, like the Overkill song "Skullkrusher" from Years of Decay or basically every Brutal Truth album. So far I have 2. :P
If you use VSTs, get pitch proof. If you use an amp, get a pitch shift pedal. I keep a guitar in standard and one in drop. I just pitch up/down to whatever I need and it works really well, even for recording
One of my 7s is in ADGCFAD and sometimes ACGCFAD when I wanna play some drop C. Basically my "modern" metal guitar but I play it often and play a lot of genres on it since it's my main guitar. For my other 7 I currently have the strings removed but I'm planning to mod in Seymour Duncan passives and tune it to half step down for stuff like Morbid Angel, After the Burial
@@aninfinitemindofmusicandreams I have my Schecter C-7 in ADGCFAD, an Ibanez RG in C-Standard, and another RG in Eb, I'm building an RG to play lap steel on and think I'll use DADF#AD.
I've been busy buying cheap guitars... I'm up to 4 now LOL. Having the most fun with an Ibanez Gio in D-standard. It's the only cheap guitar I've ever purchased that didn't have electronics issues. I blocked out the trem and now it's just fantastic to play with. :)
Hey Jason love the channel man keep up the good work. Wacken would be amazing just a heads-up it's pronounced with a "V" at the beginning instead of the W, kinda like the composer Richard Wagner, it's said like Vaagner. Take care man.
Nice video Jason. Personally your greatest guitar is the Ibanez RG because looks and sounds nice. And my dream guitars will be a Solar guitar and the ESP LTD black metal.
I have 3 guitars.... 2 schecters c1 elites, and one Peavey rotor exp, which is my favourite guitar of all time.... I have a vintage v100 Les Paul, but sold it, as I really did not like the Les Paul guitars.
Used to dream about Les Pauls starting out, but these days I'd take a nice ESP/LTD Eclipse over a Les Paul any day. I actually have one. The EC-407. The Eclipse is a sleek and cooler take on the LP shape and I know I might piss off Gibson purists saying this but it looks better than LPs. Now if we're talking about Gibson Explorers on the other hand, I still want one and I'll definitely buy one someday.
LOL, I too have noticed my ESP LTD AX-50-BF has the fattest and tallest jumbo frets over all other guitars in my herd. This size frets are now known as the Extra Jumbo size. I LIKEY! Wished almost all of my guitars had this fret size! Well, that along with normal jumbos for the last 5 frets on the high end of a 24-fret fretboard. 😉😁
Congratulations on becoming a Sweetwater affiliate! I have a tough time identifying acoustic guitars. I'm sure there are some tonal and build quality differences, but they all look the same to me lol.
Thank you! For acoustics, you really have to spend a little time playing them to figure out what fits you best. There are probably more acoustics that I’ve played that I didn’t like than ones I did!
Great video. I appreciate the candor and genuine feel of it. While there's nothing wrong with having a script, sometimes content providers can be a little stiff or seem ingenuine because of them. I like a real person sharing real thoughts like a conversation. I gotta ask a question(s) because I don't own any Prestige models myself, but my other 3 Ibanez guitars all have different variations of the Edge Tremolo that are all angled in more of a wedge shape, and are/came set up to where the bottom of tremolo plate is flush with the body. (TBH I'm pretty sure every Edge Tremolo I've seen in person or on the interwebs are set up like mine.) I see yours has the top of the tremolo flush with the body instead of the base. Is the Edge Tremolo on yours not angled? I couldn't quite tell in the video. If so, have you ever tried setting it up with the bottom flush to body, and did/do you notice any differences at all? I'm not trying to say yours is set up incorrectly, it's just different than any other Edge Tremolo I've seen. I am however an expert of exactly jack with a minor in sh*t and did my dissertation on squat. I'm just one of those fools with some tools, or is it a tool that's a fool, I forget how it goes. ;) So maybe I just never noticed it set up that way on any others before?
Thanks for the kind words and good to know! Man, I don't really notice (or pay attention) to the way the tremolo is setup. I do recall someone telling me it looks weird! But it plays just fine. So it could be that specific model.
*Should* .. but its OK to own more though, right ? I think I'm trying out different hardware by buying guitars with the different hardware in it. Lazy? Maybe .. but fun :D
Hi Jason. My mom got me a nice birthday present, Metal Zone MT-2W I really loved it, works great on amps. :) Ever had this pedal? Waza or the Original?
Those pedals are great! Way back in the day, I'd say around 1990 or so, I had the original Metal Zone. I wish I knew what happened to the stuff I had when I was younger! lol
Metal Zone is a classic and don't let anyone tell you otherwise. It got a bad rap by people that don't know what they are doing with it lol. Enjoy it! :D If your amp has an FX send/return, plug your guitar into it and then plug the MZ output into the FX Return. This bypasses your amp's preamp which will also color the sound beyond what the metal zone is doing. If you have to go into the front of your amp then I would zero out all the EQ and other controls before experimenting with them :)
@@Emily_M81 Thank you for the info! Someone said in comments, on a video about the pedal, says if you plug in into front, but lose the Presence to zero, It would sound the same, not sure how accurate it is, but yeah I will try your way, to do it, both on FX loop, and small amps in front. Thanks :). Sounds great, the Waza has a bit more Low-end, sounds fantastic. Cheers!
Well I have 7. Each one is set up different, from standard, drop D, 1/2 step down, drop C#, D standard Dadgad.... One to practice each day of the week...😂🤣 Seems they all serve their purpose...!!! Grrr8 question Bro Have a Rockin Day 🤘
Have one on my Kiesel AM7, Schecter Evil Twin, Ibanez AL61, Schecter Toxic Venom they just feel cleaner and faster and softer? Total of 18 guitars 3 basses in that total.
My idea of a true minimum requirement for established/professional guitarists would be a six-string electric, a seven-string electric, an eight-string electric, and a six string acoustic.
Most pro guitarists I know don't both er with 7 and 8 strings. But a requirement for any musician that plays professionally (pro being getting paid for gigs) is to have a backup of whatever main guitar you're using
Takamine are great acoustic guitars my step-dad passed away but lent his out and it was one of my favorite acoustics ever ... the dude is lying about having it now tho smh
Yeah it's been a rough year for me 6 months before my step-dad passed my favorite dog I've ever known and had died in my arms and a month after my step-dad passed my old band buddy died on my birthday. They say it comes in 3s smh I guess that's true but yeah life is short. Anyway good video ich bin Deutsche but never been too Germany I'm a have to check out that guitar luthier tho. I wish I had my American standard strat back that got stolen too but I have some really nice guitars still. I'm a get this 70s tesca del ray of my step dad's fixed up soon too...
Yeah I’m honestly not interesting in anyway be sending me anything just for the sake of a review. If that happens, it has to be something that’s really in my scope and would be using on a regular basis.
Yeah sometimes they be cool and let people keep it or get it cheaper , if it was me I'd do honest reviews for stuff I want lol I have rectitude and never lie so who knows maybe 🤷 I would not want somethings after I try em it happens alot to me I'm hard to please .
Ibanez v7 and v8 are pretty crappy. I guess if you don't need note seperation, and super chunky metal rythym, they might be ok, but for the most part they are pretty bad. And switching them for dimarzios... yikes. Duncan's man, Duncan's.
I actually like the V7/8s. They give me a distinct tone that I don't get from any other pickup. But the style of guitarist also has a lot to do with what pickups suit you best.

"As many as you can play at the same time, plus one." I just came up with that one LOL.
WRT the actual question itself, it is really a very first world problem. Personally I think:
One with a whammy bar
One hard tail
A short scaled one
An acoustic
May be active pickups on one of the electrics, or whatever other bling.
That ought to be more than enough! But if someone REALLY likes guitars, why not have as many as they want?
That's definitely got you covered!
6 string (black)Ibanez Gio series dual pickup tone control bass -
4 string(blue and white) Peavey Milestone bass-
6 string (black and red) Ibanez Gio Series /
6 string (white)custom Unbranded burning fire red whammy bar and red killbutton /
6 string (dark walnut stain)Mitchell 3/4 scale
All electric.
Custom unbranded! Like that!
It’s a work horse bottom line and the body design is just sick it looks like flames what’s not metal about that
great video Jason...I own 2 Charvel...a Jackson and an EVH Frankie.....2 are tuned E standard and 2 are tuned Flat....1 is a fixed bridge which I can go to drop D in
a heartbeat.....great channel bro.....
Man, I miss my Jackson that I had back in the early 90s (P4 Performer)
@@jasonstallworth yeah man.....I have a Made in Japan Dinky.....KILLER guitar with a Gotoh trem....love it...

Those RGs are just awesome guitars!
@@morbidcorpse5954 Oh, i already have plans what guitars are next. :)
That 7 string Explorer sounds interesting! I'd like to play one of those!

@@derkernspalter Find yourself an honest woman or friend and give her your wallet when you go to the guitar store.
Yeah man, different guitars bring out different ideas and styles in your!
Ibanez is famous for using innovative 5-way switching solutions on their SuperStrats. They've tried many different combinations of Series/Parallel phasing of humbuckers, splitting to one or other coils of a humbucker, and any combination of the above with the middle pup.
For example on my 2013 Ibanex S420-BK which has 2 humbuckers, the stock 5-way configuration is:
Pos5: Neck Series.
Pos4: Neck Parallel.
Pos3: Both Series.
Pos2: Neck Split South, Bridge Split North.
Pos1: Bridge Series.
On my 2012 Ibanez S570DXQM-TGB which is a HSH, the 5-way is setup from the factory as:
Pos5: Neck Series.
Pos4: Neck Split South + Middle
Pos3: Middle.
They do provide a ton of options! And thanks for the info here!
LTDs got great frets on them. Love how they are so well rounded off as well.
🤘
Cool arsenal of guitars,I have a assembly of Ibanez guitars,a few esps,Kramer's,charvels and a few I built myself, most have custom made pickups but I always gravitate to my RG Ibanez 321 with the tone zone pickups, crisp clean and mean in my opinion.
Yeah, the RGs work like magic for some of us! I love mine! But I'd like to have a Kramer and Charvel, too!
I have two guitars. But I am not primarily a guitar player... >_>
...but I have 7 basses lol. Perfection *chef's kiss*
I feel you on frets.
Thank you for the advice on the Darkglass Tone Capsule...I may definitely consider that! And your yakking is always welcome here, Emily!
I always get the RG numbers confused! But they're just awesome guitars
One for each tuning and then a backup for each of those… minimum 🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻
🤘
I don't have too many guitars but I do have a couple of brands. As in Ibanez, Jackson amd Schecter. There are a couple of each brand that sound fo sweet and like you Jason said aren't going anywhere.
I think it's been a year or so, but I'm sort of in the same boat. I do have a Martin acoustic now. I sold the LTD and bought a friend's Telecaster...I need to do a video update!
Have an Ibanez and Jackson😊
Those are some really awesome guitars Jason very 🆒 😎👍🎸🤘
Yeah all have a purpose but are also interchangeable. The only thing I really need is a back-up 7 string for when I start playing metal live. I'm only playing solo acoustic live gigs now (with a little electric, which I use either the Ibanez or my friend's Tele...that Tele is a workhorse!)
@@jasonstallworth 👍🆒
you r awesome jason i have 8 guitars lol well had sold them down to 3 and then to 1 now have 3 ibanez schecter bc rich im good and a bass is coming down the line!
Yeah, you definitely want to get a bass in the mix! Sounds like you have everything you need beyond that!
I've got just 2, but may add a 3rd. One is a very crappy GST170, that I keep at work for practice on weekends with just generic amp. 2nd is a GST-E, that I've upgraded. Might step up a slot to a DMT100, rise above my Glarry's a bit :)
🤘
I've got 2 basses, an acoustic, 2 6 strings with one drop tuned, a 7 string, and a short scale
That's a nice mix of guitars covering everything you need!
I'd like to add one more 7 string just so I can keep one drop tuned. I use pitch shifters so I can cover the range of drop/standard tunes
Very nice solo man. The number of guitars depends on the type of music and of course the tuning. If a person uses many different tunings, it is natural. But, if you are using the same tuning, there's no meaning except the single coil/humbucker pickup
Definitely depends on your style!
That's a great idea with the different tunings.
I have 7, four of which are Jackson, definitely need more...
I miss the Jackson I had when I was younger! Those are nice guitars.
I have 11. that first performance was very melodic.

Hey Jason love the channel man keep up the good work. Wacken would be amazing just a heads-up it's pronounced with a "V" at the beginning instead of the W, kinda like the composer Richard Wagner, it's said like Vaagner. Take care man.
Thank you dude 🙏🏻🤘
Nice video Jason. Personally your greatest guitar is the Ibanez RG because looks and sounds nice. And my dream guitars will be a Solar guitar and the ESP LTD black metal.
That’s my favorite out of all of them. It’s so versatile.
I'm up to 19 now. I just can't stop buying 🤘
Oh, dude...that's a lot of options! It would be cool to have a giant wall of guitars!
After owning 6 guitars, a Chapman, Epiphone les paul and an ESP ect. I need to get my hands on a Solar E type guitar.
🤘
I have 3 guitars.... 2 schecters c1 elites, and one Peavey rotor exp, which is my favourite guitar of all time.... I have a vintage v100 Les Paul, but sold it, as I really did not like the Les Paul guitars.
I’ve played several LPs and those just aren’t my thing either
Love those true jumbo frets!
All of the guitars is the right number to own...

@@jasonstallworth As long as it does it's job ;)
*Should* .. but its OK to own more though, right ?
I think I'm trying out different hardware by buying guitars with the different hardware in it.

Enjoy it! :D
If your amp has an FX send/return, plug your guitar into it and then plug the MZ output into the FX Return.

Quick answer: All of them

Ibanez v7 and v8 are pretty crappy. I guess if you don't need note seperation, and super chunky metal rythym, they might be ok, but for the most part they are pretty bad. And switching them for dimarzios... yikes. Duncan's man, Duncan's.
I actually like the V7/8s. They give me a distinct tone that I don't get from any other pickup. But the style of guitarist also has a lot to do with what pickups suit you best.
I think 9 is an absolute minimum.
