This is a great place to start because it's a very basic concept. I think most crafters will tweak the formula to fit their craft, geographic location, overhead, etc. Thank you for sharing this with us.
Yes I agree this formula isn’t for every DIY especially if you have a lot of hours involved in it this is just very basic and it works for my sign business
This is so helpful. My husband is pushing me to open up an Etsy shop or something to sell my crafts. He has more faith in me than I do myself. But anyway, this is good to know. Love your channel. Thanks so much! ❤️💜💚
Excellent information, I don't know of anyone else who is giving as complete information, especially with the book that you've produced. Thank you so much!
I like your formula a lot better than most I have seen. I’m always sure not to price an item over an amount I would actually pay myself. We all still need to move out our inventory. The price is just as important as creator something worth selling.
Thank you for your videos. They are all inspiring! When i had my Etsy store open I learned this formula from top sellers. costs of making the item x4 + labor/time/shipping= retail price Remember your time and labor is valuable. They explained that’s the best way to make some money on Etsy after all the fees. I keep the formula for crafts shows and adjust it depending on location. Hope this helps.🌼
I agree, most people don't pay themselves what a living wage is to make the stuff. If you're retired I understand, but you can't make a living doing wholesale, handmade.
Thanks so much for this video Diedre. Your timing couldn’t be better. I’m attending my first craft fare in 2 weeks. It’s at our local Senior Center and the tables are free. Figured it’s a great place to start.
Im so glad I found your content. I have been to intimidated to start doing craft fairs but really want to. Your video with tips and tricks and this pricing video are invaluable. Thank you
Fantastic, you are in my mind. For the first time I will be selling things that I do. And I just finish a small collection and was trying to calculate the price to sell them on Facebook market for now.... and than you show up with the solution. Thank you so very much for you help, Have a great day and stay safe !
Fantastic explanation and formula. I had to breakdown the cost of making jewelry. I counted out the beads etc and divide each quantity vs price per package or strand. It was extremely time consuming, but, it taught me a lot. I'm going to try your method on my furniture and various crafts. Thank you so much for sharing.
Glad it was helpful it’s not for every artist but it works for my business if you’re doing a large item that takes many many hours to complete this formula won’t work but for small items like mine it works perfect
Thanks some great advise. I was just wondering how much you would add on for your labor, especially on projects that can take hours or days? A special thanks for all the helpful things i have learned from your shows.
When I double my cost for wholesale that is my labour included this does not work for every artist but it works really well for me pricing my signs if you’re doing a very large object that’s taking you many many hours then obviously this formula would not work
What I'm up against is the huge price difference from a local average craft show verses high end places. Example : #1 - a very nice bird house at average craft shows goes for $45 #2 - In a resort high end craft area it goes for $120 My craft friends who sell a different craft in those areas said it's because the clientele are mostly well off compaired to my area. I have seen the prices myself. My haw dropped.
@@OurUpcycledLife wife and I are doing a craft show his weekend at a huge water park / amusement park. It's their Annual Fall Festival. There will be 100 Crafters there. We're excited and nervous at the same time.
It's so funny that you came out with this video today because I just spent a good portion of my day pricing everything for an art fair on Saturday. Fortunately a friend came over to help me because I have such a hard time with this.
Oooh! I very much appreciated this video thank you so much seriously very grateful one of the hardest things to do when it comes to selling my crafts. Your the best! God bless
I always find that everything is higher priced on Etsy than it is at art fairs. So I would put my prices higher on Etsy and lower at an art fair. Particularly if I offer free shipping. Which I think a lot of people appreciate just knowing what the total cost is going to be and not having to mess with shipping. I know I do.
I have no idea how to include things like your paint, sealer, & things that come from bulk. How do you estimate how much your even using? I LOVED this video & it helped me ALOT. THANK YOU!
It takes a bit of time but once you’ve done that specific project for a long time you know how long a product last for and how many items you got with that product and you can kind of get a ballpark idea of per item cost. And somethings when you buy it is already broken down into per item price which is helpful
I’m sooooooooo glad you put out this video!! I’ve been wanting to sell my diys however I didn’t know how to do ANY of the things you shared here, now in your opinion, if I don’t have my own store to sell my diys which platform would you recommend for a first timer like me?? Also, does Etsy take a percentage of what you sell?? If so how would you factor in that money “lost” for lack of word? I believe fb is free correct? So I guess you’d have to decide on which platform you’d want to work from 🤷🏻♀️ see I thought when you added everything in that you use, you put in the full price of that diy item I.e. mod podge, scrapbook paper etc.. but you just added the amount I guess??? Makes sense…. This video was sooooo helpful if you could answer my questions that would be great or anyone reading could help me out as well!!! Great video 👏🏻👏🏻
Glad the video was helpful the formula doesn’t work for everyone but it does work for my sign business. A good starting spot is just to try to sell locally as he can get very expensive with their fees and then you also have to worry about shipping
Hey you are a genuine and honest person which is wonderful. But if it takes 1 hour to make the sign then the average minimum wage per hour is $12. So you are actually loosing $7 per hour compared to an average worker on a minimum wage job. I think you are selling yourself short. Your basic cost should be the $5 plus $12 (if treated as a minimum wage job). $17 per sign. $34 wholesale $68 retail 😑
This is amazing info, but my problem is my time spent on the product especially if I’m using air drying clay. That alone for drying time takes 24hrs. I can’t seem to figure out how much I should charge. I’ve looked on Etsy similar to my projects but when I price the item in that range, I don’t get any buyers.

I have a question that no crafter seems to be addressing. Taxes. What do you do about state and federal taxes. Is there a limit of income to which you will be taxed? How do you report it? A lot of people on social media sell items but I have not seen anyone discuss taxes. I have yet to see anyone address this. When is this considered a business or is this just a way to make a little extra money?
I live in Canada so my taxes would be completely different than yours but I have an accountant to mine so I don’t have to worry about it but I do collect taxes on every sale

It's not free to sell. Etsy fees are 13%+ and craft malls charge a monthly fee + a percentage of sales. Craft shows usually charge flat fees with no guarantee of sales.
All of those expenses would be put into the miscellaneous this formula isn’t for everyone it’s a very basic formula that most artists will have to tweak a little bit to fit their product. You would also add the Etsy fees in with the shipping fee of your cost in the beginning
The graphic comes off in chunks when I rub off after 24 hours, I'm being very gentle. I'm using a Laserjet, thin layer of mod podge matte, leave for 24 hours. I've tried using a fresh printed sheet and a sheet that's rested overnight, I've tried on both acrylic art paint, latex paint and chalk paint, all do the same thing. Any advice?
When I double the cost that incorporates the time for me making the DIY projects this formula isn’t for everyone if you’re doing a project that has a lot of hours involved but it works really well for my signs
I didn’t check your Etsy store yet but I do have a question for you. Selling in Canada only ? Shipping included? I know Etsy made it hard for sellers so I’m not active now on my Etsy store. HELP please 👏🏼👍🙋♀️♥️🇨🇦
I only Sell my digital downloads on Etsy I don’t sell any material things because our postage here in Canada is very expensive and it almost makes it impossible to sell on that platform here
This formula doesn’t work for every artist it just works for my sign business if you have a lot of hours in a certain project then just doubling will not be enough and you would have to tweak the formula. This is just a simple starting point and you can build from this formula
I see the itemized list but how do you break the cost of the items down? For example you have 50cents or 10 cents for that item. But of course they cost much more. So how did you reduce it down?
A lot of items that you buy are broken down in the purchase price like hangers nails embellishments other things I just overtime know how long the product last and how many signs I can make with that amount of product
If a box of 100 screws costs $5.00 then each screw will cost $0.05. ($5.00 divided by 100), then add up how many screws the project will use. That method works for me, hope that helps. Paint and other materials are too much work for me, unless you really want to find the cost per ounce and such, I just use my best estimate.
I just have made so many signs I know how long a bottle of mod podge last me and how many signs I get out of it so then I can do a calculation from there and a lot of items when you buy them have a per item cost listed and that makes it easy this formula isn’t for everyone especially if you have a DIY that has a lot of hours into it but it works for my signs it’s a simple formula and you can start from there and tweak as needed
No this formula is not for everyone and if you do have a time consuming DIY you would have to take that into consideration this formula just works really well for me to price my small signs
this is all well and good but for wire wrapped jewelry it doesnt work because I'd be selling my stuff for pennies and you havent said anything about counting in the time it takes to make items. If I went with your figures Id be selling my stuff at around $15.00 . Some of my stuff takes over an hour to make and y time is valuable. Everything I make has a $20 an hour mark up on it. Youve got to value your skills.
Hmm, I'm not sure that 10% covers all the miscellany. And you forgot to mention to add in fees for listing items with online marketplaces or renting a booth at a fair, any additional shipping & packaging costs (especially if the item is large or requires special packaging other than a box, standard shipping paper, & packing tape) & any merchant/seller and financial transaction or processing fees, as well as all hard marketing or advertising costs (biz cards, paid promotions on social media, etc) and a fee for your time with design, marketing, bookkeeping, accounting & taxes. Seriously, assign a $ value for your time & efforts, or figure in the fees you already pay someone else to do these tasks. These things really do add up! (You can always offer a discount if a customer pays in cash, like a surprise bonus. Or just know that the 30 cent + 3.5% fee you're not being charged on a cash transaction will even out with the mistakes and occasional refund that are bound to happen with electronic payments.) There's so many costs involved that we rarely consider, especially with a craft or art product business. Don't have grossly overpriced crap, and also don't sell yourself short! 💗
I don't agree with your pricing you should at least make 33% wholesale. And 3 tiles that for retail. You're not counting your time your over head for your business.
This formula isn’t for everyone it just works for my business and for my smalls if you’re making a DIY that has a lot of hours into it this formula won’t work. But by me doubling my cost price that incorporates my hourly rate that it takes to make my signs
Yes when I double it for wholesale that is my labour cost this formula does not work for every artist but it works really well for me pricing my DIY signs
This is a great place to start because it's a very basic concept. I think most crafters will tweak the formula to fit their craft, geographic location, overhead, etc. Thank you for sharing this with us.

How do you estimate the shipping
That will depend on your postage rates . Usually you can go to the companies website and they will have a estimate guide for shipping

If you paid your self I missed it and I don’t think 10% is enough to cover overhead

Thank you guys, these answers really helps!
How do you tell if something is actually selling on Etsy?
When you go to the listing of a certain product some sellers will allow you to see how many have sold
Wish saw tooth hangers were that cheap here. About 4 bucks for just 2.
Oh no that is outrageous I’ll get mine in bulk on eBay and they’re quite reasonable
@@OurUpcycledLife I'm definitely going to buy from there. TFS
@@OurUpcycledLife will check that option out.
I don't understand how you came up with some of those itemized prices. Like how do you know you only used 10 cents worth of mod podge?
I just have made so many signs I know how long a bottle of mod podge last me and how many signs I get out of it so then I can do a calculation from there and a lot of items when you buy them have a per item cost listed and that makes it easy this formula isn’t for everyone especially if you have a DIY that has a lot of hours into it but it works for my signs it’s a simple formula and you can start from there and tweak as needed
I can't see that sign selling for $20.
10% does not sound like enough to cover gas, mileage, and all those other expenses
If you make items using materials that cost practically nothing, but which take hours to make, this formula won't be ideal.
Or just know that the 30 cent + 3.5% fee you're not being charged on a cash transaction will even out with the mistakes and occasional refund that are bound to happen with electronic payments.)
There's so many costs involved that we rarely consider, especially with a craft or art product business. Don't have grossly overpriced crap, and also don't sell yourself short! 💗
I was surprised that you didn't add a fee for your time.
That is including when I double 2x won’t Work for every artist but it works for me
I don't agree with your pricing you should at least make 33% wholesale.
Did you factor in your time?
Yes when I double it for wholesale that is my labour cost this formula does not work for every artist but it works really well for me pricing my DIY signs
Why do you put shipping at the beginning instead of at the end?
Your time should be worth something, but that really wasn't factored in.
This works well for small projects that don’t take a lot of time to complete
Why don’t you consider your time and talent in figuring your prices. This is not a method I would use at all.
This formula doesn’t work for everyone, especially if you’re doing a project that’s very time-consuming, but it works well for my little signs
