What an amazing video Armando! We were so proud to support and sponsor this NEXT LEVEL production video. Can't wait to support more of these real world examples in the future! Great work!
So nobody is going to talk about how good that "Talking head shot" looks? I felt like I was watching the behind the scenes of some Avengers level movie 🙌
Nerdhaunt Are you serious? The agent over acted every line which is common in indie land. Emerging actors always feel the need to animate every line, instead of just ‘talking’.
The only thing BMPCC lacked is in dynamic range. Blacks were so deep with almost no information. But to be honest, the skin tones on BMPCC were looking much more cinematic than canon. Canon’s colors seemed to be much more poped up, with natural looking skin tones, which I felt that didn’t suited the look of this film. So if we can cover up deep blacks or can do some tweaks in Canon’s color grading. We are good to go. Out of these two, would choose BMPCC as winner
It seemed like bmpcc footage has the crushed blacks from the color grading? I'm sure that the original log file has tons of information in the shadows as well.
I'm a big sandwich - yes most probably. May be colorist wasn’t getting same contrasty look without pushing blacks down. Not sure. But blacks were really crushed and of course there will be much more detail in RAW file
Yep... I thought the same thing. I’m just not a big fan of the magenta-tint to everything that Canon has. I know “normies” like it... but I’m a much bigger fan of ARRI or Blackmagic color science.
Lets not forget in the hands of professionals both lots of footage can look very different. We need to stop judging cameras on YT tests. I've seen BM6K footage look f**king insane in the hands of others.
The bmpcc6k is the little brother to the ursa mini g2 that always wants to play fight and wrestle when their cousin (c500 mk2) comes over who is the same age and strength of the g2. They finally let the little brother play and realize he’s a lot stronger than they thought. Not as strong but he can maintain his own. I like that.
I don't know how to explain this but from a "numerical" perspective the Canon looks better, BUT, the BMPCC has more character. My vote still is Black Magic
Nice video. I like how you spend so much time and effort to make one video. Unlike other people, sitting in front of the camera and reading out the camera specs.
Finally!!! This is the kind of test I've been wanting to see...an actual production!!! I hate the comparisons of test shots with color charts, dynamic range etc. Although those are informative, filmmakers want to see what it's like to use them on an actual film/ production. Thank you for this.
The lights are lighter and the darks are darker on the bmpcc. The cannon looks more cinematic and soft. As a bmpcc owner I like this comparison. The black magic cameras are amazing with the software menus. Hands down best interface on any cinema camera.
Thanks for this incredible Video Armando. I think lots of us viewers take for granted how valuable these kinds of videos are for us and determining what cameras to invest in. Brilliant video
I'm a black magic fan but I gotta say on this production, I'd pick the C500 look all day! For the money the BM is a no brainer but if you've got the dough, there is Def a difference. Can't wait to see more!
Thanks Armando I So Hype For Next Part Canon camera has more features, like Dual Pixel Or electronic stabilizer so useful BUT I think BMPCC6K it still has a cinematic image to my eye I wish I had a camera with Canon features with Black Magic Camera image look
Thank for compare . The image look so amazing, but Pocket 6k , motion blur is so strong because lack of processing . C500 mkii, Rolling shutter and jello effect is minimize and read out fast images. Fast action C500mk2 is perfect.
Both looks great but the test was really in the hand of the colorist. I don’t think he did a good job on bmpcc, which could have come out way more cinematic given the fact that you guys had all the proper lighting sources.
Excellent review . I own the pocket 6k and I gotta say , when you compare it even to a 15 thousand dollar camera , it gives Canon a run for their money . Excellent ! Would love to see that ursa mini comparison against Canon 500.
Thanks for doing a REAL comparison, and not just shots of your kids, dog, trees, wife/girlfriend etc. I have the BMPCC6K and it's brilliant, but man that Canon sure looks good.
Just finished, amazing video man, great job. I had to rewatch the scene twice, I forgot to pay attention to the quality comparisons because I got sucked into the story lol . Anyway c500 looked gorgeous. Surprisingly the bmpcc6k held its own. It looked pretty dang good. Really shows the value of that camera if you can’t afford something like the c500.
I use both cameras for documentaries. C 500 as an A, BM 6K as a B Camera . I love them both. The BM 6K is also due to it's size great for travelling - and very reliable. The C 500 with the EVF-V70 OLED Viewfinder for in- and outdore shooting state of the art!
Thanks. I must say I'm not a huge fan of the colour-science of ether cam but maybe the BM looked maybe more 'cinematic' to me. Looking forward to the URSA mini pro G2 comparison!
Excellent work. Don't know if you applied the same color correction but I prefer the color correction on the bmpcc6k. You pushed the reds too much on the face in the canon, I would've leaned for a more cold muted look. Also I find the room too dark... i like the overhead spot light but the addition of a florescent light maybe over the doorway always makes these interrogation scenes seem more sinister and real.
...search The Joker interrogates the prison guard also 21 Bridges Movie Clip - Detail Oriented also The Adjustment Bureau (2011) - I Can Read Your Mind Scene
what iso where you shooting at on the bmpcc 6k? seems like you were using the second range because of the clipped highlights on the interrogators shirt. would love to see a test with the first iso range.
its really awesome that you have a channel in Spanish! We need more of that. What i wasnt expecting was even Lucas was speaking spanish! Next level production man xD
The issue with camera tests is the ability to manipulate the cameras footage not only shoot the camera. I’ve seen PC6K look better in other projects, here it’s too hot in the highlights and a little over blown, but many over head lit interrogation scenes are. Some of the footage from other scenes at the tail of this vid look dam awesome, can’t wait for those, I think they will be the more flattering cinematic comparisons :)
I would love you to compare the Ursa g2 with the c500 in this type of style......but I definitely liked both they both look great I'd love to also see your lighting for this scene
honestly these cameras are way to close. canon has a little more contrast but if they were mixed it would be hard to tell. would def buy two 6ks for the price
What I get from your videos. C500 shines when you have small team, using the AF., gun and run style. When you have big team and using manual Focus, main different is the frame size and dynamic range different.
Skin tones look much better on the black magic, not a fan of the over magenta tones on the canon. Canon has more dynamic range, but tbh for this particular shot, I don’t think it matters as much the more contrasts look suits the scene
I prefer the skin tones of the Pocket 6K in this test. I was getting a red vibe from the Canon, though only when they were put side-by-side did I notice it. 4:36 Also, did anyone else see the 6K go out of focus a LOT???
Canon was definitely better, but not enough to justify the price in my opinion. The close shot could have been solved by changing the lens and the darker areas could have been hit with a tad bit of diffused light to match the canons incredible dynamic range. Great vid!!
The Canon was too smooth for me. Looks like it would smoke the bmpcc in a beauty commercial but the bmpcc had more grit for a cinematic feel. Having said that, I'm guessing you could push the Canon to wherever you want in the grade given that dynamic range. Agree with the conclusion though, we need to get out and shoot with whatever camera we have!!
I don't know... I have seen much more details in my P4k shadow than what I've seen here... I'm a bit confused about it and would love to see a RAW frame export of that scene so I can look at it in Resolve and see how it was shot...
As a bmpcc 4k user... the Canon Looks so much better. That Highlight roll-off is fantastic, and those dark areas are so detailed. is it 14k $ better....NO! So I'll keep my bmpcc 4k for now.
That comparison at 04:35 says it all. The C500, as Canon is in general, is very flattering to the human face. Larger sensor size has a lot to do with it but check out the area under your eyes. I think every actor and director would prefer the look of the Canon. The BMPCC doesn't know how to lie.
This is a great video. I have watched it multiple times. The c500 mark 2 footage looks beautiful. . . . . I was thinking of buying the Blackmagic G2 4.6k. Is there any place that I can see some of the footage that your friend Lukas Colombo has shot with the G2?
I actually prefer the image from the BMPCC6K, because given the price difference you get an amazing image with a less apreciable banding (although you can see the loss of information in the shadows). In therms of starting a new bussiness, BMPCC6K is the way to go. But maybe the convinience of having buid in ND filters on the Canon side and the added weight to a more stable image, is the better choice for a bigger production.
Great video Armando, thanks! Would there be any chance of making a short, raw clip from each camera publicly downloadable? I'd love to have a play with both in Resolve for myself.
Tor Johansen true... but canon is still heavily red/magenta biased. Even with raw... there is still color science these companies use when developing sensors, signal processing, ect...
RUclips doing color banding pisses me off so much. Both cameras shouldn't have any. And I'm %100000 sure with the original colored files of Armando doesn't have any. But watching the background really hurts me. I love youtube but they need to change a thing or two if they are thinking of themselves for the future of film and show streaming platform.
@@mondobytes Perhaps it needs subtle film grain so there's not as much banding? The end result is TOO clean (resulting in more compression artifacts), especially on the C500 footage.
I want to see the C500MkII vs an Arri Alexa Mini or LF. I feel like the C500MkII could look better than the Mini, and if you do it, please playback the footage labeled A and B and tell us after which is which!
currently filming a feature film primarily on a Blackmagic Pocket 4K. also RED Scarlett, Sony FS5 mkII for slowmo. a university is hiring me to film eLearning material and I'm getting 2 Pocket 6K's for that.
Whether it’s the framing or the colours idk but the black magic was more convincing from a ‘filmic’ point of view. Dynamic range better on the cannon but you’d just light the scene differently to compensate. Audio better on the cannon but not too sure about hearing the cop’s stubble 😆
For this project and scene, I prefer the P6k looks. C500II definitely has a bit more dynamic range of shadow, but seems Canon's skin tone is too magenta to me, and the same thing for 1DXIII, c200 and c300II.
That’s a simple fix in post that takes 5 seconds. You can’t fix dynamic range, depth and field of view in post. Yes, I know this cost 5X more but my point is it’s a simple fix in post.
This is AWSOME! Love the sponsor! Also quick question - what matte box do you use? And is there a way to use 4x4 filters in a 4x5.6 matte box? I don’t have any lenses that could benefit from a 4 x 5.6 and 4 x 4 filters have such a better price! But I want to have the option to be able to go to 4 x 5.6 for future gigs.
Cadence Helser We used a Kondor Blue prototype 4x5 Mattebox. Funny enough I used a 4x4 filter because this mattebox has a 4x4 insert tray that allows you to use both sizes like you said.
Lukas Colombo gotcha! That’s awesome! Any idea when this product will be released? I’d love to pick one up! Also I love what you guys are doing with condor blue super awesome to see innovation in the rigging Market!
@@CadenceHelser Thanks so much man. Unfortunately, the virus has been delaying our development and production process but I am hoping for early summer when we announce several new products. Thanks for the support!
Ok, even after youtube compression, those details on white shirt is amazing on canon. but somehow blackmagic colors are far better. skin on canon looks like its way too red to be real.
Honestly, I wished you would repeat this quote 11:25 over and over AND OVER on a 10-hour loop. This was a very interesting video. I was more intrigued by Armando's acting performance (do more of this its so fun to watch) than dynamic range. Looking forward to seeing more content like this!
The BMPCC 6K will be a great camera when BM will upgrade the battery life and put on it a proper phase AF. A full frame sensor would be perfect. That said this camera has a good image quality for the price though, the codec is nice too. The brand new Canon 1D X mark III have it all, even if being 3 times more expensive. This one is way more interesting. The C 500 II have built in ND filters which is quite handy for faster workflows, but for that price you’re getting close to RED territory. Nice comparison mate. Greetings
What? My genuine Canon LP-E6N battery (14Wh) in my BMPCC4K gives me 52 min of constant 4KDCI recording. What does the C500 get? 52 min with a BP-A30 battery (45Wh). So what are you talking about? With a Sony NP-F970 attached, I can get 4 hours of continuous 4KDCI recording on my BMPCC4K. With a 120Wh V-lock I can go for over 6 hours including running a 7" monitor. I suspect that the figures for the BMPCC6K aren't that different. And have you ever heard of manual (proper) focus? And lets not even get into recording media, just one more 'minor' thing that affects overall cost of ownership.
Great Content. Really good to see what are these cameras are capable of in movie like production. The specs are just numbers, in the end the final product is what really matter. I have a BMPCC 4k and the next months i want to bring out the Maximum from it and this comparison motivate me to complete my short film. Thank You Armando !
Ok first things first. Fantastic review. Very few, if any, have reviewed this system so well in a real life situation. Going around taking random shots of the city is one thing but what you did here is next level in terms of comparison. Now. I also have little thing to point out in defence of the PCC6K. Every camera responds to light and shadows differently than others. Also when shooting in a metered environment, the contrast ratios are registered differently on each camera. What I mean is, I light the same using a light meter or false color irrespective of the camera. But the settings on the camera will be determined by wether the camera prefers over or underexposure of middle gray or exactly what IRE would give me the best possible outcome for **MY WORKFLOW**. So in that case the canon, i guess through pure coincidence, just happened to find multiple sweet spots for itself in the test. Both fantastic cameras and I genuinely think the canon will win most of the days but my honest observation, the Pocket camera is capable of reducing the difference much more than this.
@@cagf2013 Judging dynamic range from this video is pointless without knowing what was done in the grade. Plus based on the BTS video, they shot the P6K at ISO 800 which greatly REDUCES the latitude on the shadow areas. Not the best choice for this scene.
You’re pushing the envelope w/ content baby. Fun, nice to get these different perspectives. If I was into shooting video you’re definitely opening a channel to get a new view on these familiar products out there. And even tho I’m not into shooting video, I really like your channel, you’re fun to watch, and I do always come away w/ something new. Good on you…...
The story telling, coloring, acting, composition from the c500 murdered the black magic 6k... looks like I’ll be buying a 6k and emulating the c500 until I can purchase one 🤤
Ford Explorer vs Land Rover Range Rover. Equal up to 70% as long as you don't take it off-road. In that case, one clearly pulls away leaving the other in the dust.
Awesome! I am now wishing I bought the c500 instead of c200. But I agree it is not all about the camera gear. Please share your lighting information. I love your lighting the most.

The Black Magic looks remarkable for the price point. But the Canon slayed it of course. That's some crisp footage.
The C500 MKII has an incredibly creamy image with no sharpening. Smooth roll-off as well. Loving it.

Thanks for the support!
cool black magic advertisement
Ha! If that was your take away, you missed the whole point of this video.
And lets not even get into recording media, just one more 'minor' thing that affects overall cost of ownership.
very interesting. thanks for the extensive setup!
Great Content. Really good to see what are these cameras are capable of in movie like production. The specs are just numbers, in the end the final product is what really matter. I have a BMPCC 4k and the next months i want to bring out the Maximum from it and this comparison motivate me to complete my short film. Thank You Armando !
Amazing video, bro! Can't wait to see a comparison with the URSA Mini Pro G2.
blackmagic colors are unmatched but the shadow details are impressive on the c500
Love it! Well done Armando
I have the GH5s, I'm going wait another year to get the BMPCC6K. Lumix serves me well.
Great video, thank you guys :)
What was the ISO on the cameras?
Awesome video! Thanks for sharing! What was the mattebox on the Pocket6k?
That camera Equipment looks really really good✨🎬
Awesome, entertaining side-by-side Armando!
Ford Explorer vs Land Rover Range Rover
Yes! Been waiting!
Hmmm I won't deny that the c500 has a great dynamic range, but I really did prefer the colour science of the bmcc.
Agreed
@@cagf2013 Judging dynamic range from this video is pointless without knowing what was done in the grade. Plus based on the BTS video, they shot the P6K at ISO 800 which greatly REDUCES the latitude on the shadow areas. Not the best choice for this scene.
@@torrolfjohansen I was more referring to the colour science. The black magic looked a little better... though that could just be the grade
@@cagf2013 Not gonna fight you on that statement, but the reality is the colour science is really left to the user in how they process the raw files.
Thanks for watching 🤙🏽
The story telling, coloring, acting, composition from the c500 murdered the black magic 6k... looks like I’ll be buying a 6k and emulating the c500 until I can purchase one 🤤
Awesome video, these are great. Let’s get a C500 ii vs Ursa G2 comparison video or perhaps C70 vs Ursa G2 😤
Probably the best vid out there, thanks for this! New sub!
Cool! Ursa next?! Maybe some tests to see how they perform in less controlled environments!
The blackmagic does not hold a flame to the Canon c500. Canon just kills it. Beautiful colours
