      Scoria/lava rock & expanded shale are a slightly cheaper option that might be available to you depending on where you live. River rock & road base are commonly used here in Australia. Just make sure there's no carbonates in the rock or it could cause issues down the line with water4 chemistry.
      This link will take you to section in a video that explains how to test for carbonates,

    Hi rob ,I’m completely new to aquaponics and in gardening in general . I’m trying to find information on whether or not it’s possible to have a completely self sustaining aquaponics system that is completely power free, e.g using gravity or no electricity . I think I seen a video on it but without explanation of how it worked, I only have a small garden but I really need some advice. Are there any good forums or chat groups where I could get help on ideas I have ??

    • @RobsAquaponics
      @RobsAquaponics  2 года назад +1

      Hi Nay. You will always need power of some sort to move water & provide air for the fish. My suggestion would be to look at a small solar panel & battery set up to run the system. 👍
      There are loads of solar setup videos on youtube that may help with the power side of things. 👍
      You could look at the Backyard Aquaponics forum as I know that a few of members there were running their systems on solar a few years back.

      You can use aquaponics in very hot climates. It's actually very popular in the desserts of the middle east. Just need to select the right fish species, try & mitigate the extreme heat with proper system placement & using shade cloth.

      The pressure rated PVC is used in plumbing drinking water here in OZ. I know you folks have a version that's safe for potable water as well. Best to ask a plumbing supply store what they would recommend as I don't want to lead you up the garden path Michael.

    Hi Rob, this is amazing information! I'm a high school teacher and my school is getting me an 8 foot x12 foot greenhouse for my course. I'd like to do a dual IBC tote system, but am concerned about having enough space in the greenhouse to grow the plants. What are your thoughts about burying the ibc totes in the ground and then using planks to cover them so they can be walked on. My thinking is it would leave more vertical height and space for media tables to grow the plants. Are there cons to burying the totes that you could see?

    • @RobsAquaponics
      @RobsAquaponics  2 года назад +1

      That should work fine Kale. Just ensure that the side walls of the holes are reinforced as the side walls of IBCs are very flimsy. I would also ensure that you have decent access to the fish tanks for maintenance & harvesting the fish.
      I hope that helps a little.

    Great videos, thank you very much!! I do have a question though, does the addition of the bio filter (like mbbr or media beds) change the ratio of fish to growbed? If it does, can you tell me how much change and the reason why are you using mbbrs??

    • @RobsAquaponics
      @RobsAquaponics  2 года назад +1

      The biofilters do add extra biofiltration & can increase the amount of fish you can keep, I would still not overload the fish tank just because of the extra filtration. I use it mainly due to the "split flow" configuration of my system & want treated water to go back to the fish.
      It will also come in handy when we move the system. It will allow me to run the system as a straight aquaculture one while the beds are broken down & moved to their new location.

      I think I may have answered a similar question from you before. Sorry I'm it much help but we've never had an issue with a phos deficiency.
      I don't run my calcium to any specific level either.
      I think a better person to ask would be someone like Hoocho over on his channel. He's hydro based but delves more into the nutrient levels that I do with aquaponics.

      You can but you can fit more fish in the same given space & hey produce more waste than the crays.

      Sorry I missed your comment. I haven't been advertising the consultation side of things due to trying to finish off extra material for my online guide but am still doing the odd one here & there.
      Once I get the bulk of that information added to the guide I'll be launching the consultation page on my website.
      The consultation sessions are for those who are looking to build their first backyard aquaponics systems or are needing a few pointers for their existing system.
      The consultations are held via the Zoom app & I've found the best way to run them is for people to email their questions to me after making a booking.
      That way we're ready to go as soon as we start the meeting & can make the most of the time. 👍
      You can email me on rb@bitsouttheback.net if you're interested & we can take it from there.
      Cheers.

      Any chance you can share a link with me here? I did hear one state is trying to restrict gardens but not sure what type or why

      As @Daniel Davies suggested above, some aphids are farmed by ants. The black onion ones from this video aren't though as I think there "honeydew" would have too much sulphur in it from the onions. I haven't seen many ladybugs eat them either & I think that may be due to the same reason.

      @@shawlork We don't have them in our system here but if they'll control pests, go for it I say. 👍
