When Kevin sings he has a soulfulness to his delivery.. Not that I am attributing soulfulness to any ethnic group, because Scott has it in butt loads...not only is he technically a great singer, but he also has a GREAT rhythm and blues gospel sound to his voice. Watch the 10th performance of Pentatonix on the Sing Off (the talent show win that brought them to public notice) and watch how he (Scott) does the Marvin Gaye masterpiece "Lets Get It On"
thanks for the insight :)
yes LET'S GET IT ON. Scott's voice is so sultry in it.
Your professional knowledge is showing... (grin) I don't think I've ever heard anyone point out that halo effect around Kirstie.
This is one of the reasons that I love reaction videos--everyone notices something different, and most of those observations add to the overall impact of the original video. This one was particularly nice because of that.
"Bitch can do no wrong" is the most accurate description of Mitch lol Mitch if you would like to hear Mitch rap Feeling Myself by Superfruit is awesome. And if you would like to hear Guitar Grassi then Bohemian Rhapsody by PTX is a master piece. Not just Mitch, they all killed it :)
Guurrrll You took the words straight out of my mouth ! P.s. you're right they did all do such a fantastic job :)
OMG! Great Reaction! I loooooved it! This is one of my favorite songs because it is so powerful and the lyrics have a lot of meaning. And you are right, Kirstin is an angel. :)
This is one of the most beautiful songs of theirs...I have it on my playlist and listen to it year round. Thank you for reacting to it ..awesome reaction!!
Thank you, I was a bit iffy recording this wayyyy out of holiday season but if the songs good i don't see why the time frame should be restricted to a few months of the year :)
doesnt kirstin always have a halo around her head? (can you tell i have a crush on her)
Avriel and the Sequoias is still highly suggested :) It has amazing songs, whether it be Originals or Covers... With aesthetic shots usually outside ;)
HIGHLY reccomend Quarter Past Four, if you want to hear Avi's emotional voice!
The cave they used is in L.A. near Pasadena. It's been used a lot for TV and movies.
That is the most beautiful I have ever heard it sung.
alot of people don't realize kevin and avia are such great vocalist as well
You really need to see Avi's song with Hollens, it's amazing! The song's name is, Black is The Color of My True Love's Hair - Peter Hollens & Avi Kaplan. Ps, the reason Kevin didn't sing much in the beginning & even now is of course because he's the beatboxer but also because he couldn't sing well. He asked Avi to give him lessons, to develop & hone his voice. Then everyone else started to as well, I'm not sure if he started taking classes from another professional trainer as well, but it clearly paid off.
something may be waiting to be edited ;)
I'm glad you noticed Kirstie's halo. Many reactors miss that completely!
For the record Mark Lowry a Christian comedian wrote this and when he wrote and recorded it he didn't intend it to be a christmas song.
I think some of Kevin's draw is that his voice is a rare treat. You don't hear it often, and when you do it's arranged for maximum effect.
For those who don't know who Mary is, she is Mother Mary who gave birth to Jesus in Bethlehem , the Lamb of God. You did this reaction in 2018. Since then I see calls to watch this song from Voctave. Every year Mark Lowery releases a new version of Mary Did You Know with him as the lead. Mark continues to work on how to sing the song to bring out the meaning of the message. It would be fascinating to see you point that out. If they doubled the voices here, imagine Voctave with multiple voices in each register.
IMO this version is singing to Mary. When Mark sings, he is not questioning Mary because she pondered all these events in her heart as God reveals (present tense) Himself to humans, His children and all the earth, beginning with the stable. He blesses Mary to make Himself more relatable to us as our Father to all races throughout the world. If it is too much of the same song in one year, remember it and don't forget to do it next year with Voctave, please. You can tell it tired Mark to sing it the way he did (diagnosed with MS). Check it out.
I was first exposed to PTX when Little Drummer Boy came out, but when I heard/saw this I became a true Pentaholic! For me, this is A MASTERPIECE...the vocals, the arrangement, the video setting/lighting...everything is PERFECTION. (Hallelujah comes very close, but this is still #1 in my mind) On my favorites playlist year round too. I enjoy watching others reaction to them, it's so much fun to see others fall in love with them! Thanks for your reactions 😊
I find Kevin's voice to have this sweet, tender, vulnerable quality that is unique to him...somehow it is different than the others imo anyway.
YES! I think I'll always have a soft spot for halleluja as a song in general but this was very very well done.
this is one of my favorite songs from their christmas collection! i love mitch's climactic moment so much, and how they all contributed to building up the drama to reach that moment.
At minute 3:00 Mitch sings "The Great I Am" and holds that note so clear and long, it's beautiful. Really the best example of the potential of his voice yet. As to he can't do anything wrong... well the shaved head and mustache of later days say otherwise.
Avi has such a smooth, creamy deepness that he could croon to me all day. Check out the Pentatonix song Light in the Hallway. It's an original Pentatonix song that Scott wrote for his nephew. Avi sings the main lead of the song.

Thank you !, i'll pop that down for next weekends recording day :)
My favorite Christmas cover they have done! All amazing but THIS??? Ugh...chills, tears, shattering heart...all of it! Just beautiful! You should see the 2016 Christmas special performance! So emotional and Mitch....oy vey! Bellisimo!!! love your reactions. Thx for sharing! Much ❤️
Thank you :)
That was great! This is the song that hooked me on Pentatonix. If you like Kevin on the cello and singing you have to react to “Say Something.” Kevin plays the cello the whole song and sings at the end. Kirstie sings lead and is incredible. Avi has a solo part that is great. That song really shows off the talents of the whole band.
Thank you for the suggestion and support :)
Awesome reaction homie!...Their performance for this is amazing and crazy how they their voices blend well together lol.
Thanks for the reaction! If you want to hear more of Pentatonix in a choir like mode, I suggest "Run to You" It's an original, and is very moving. You might also try their cover of "Say Something", but bring a handkerchief because you will cry. If you want something lighter, you might try Mitch and Scott's other channel, Superfruit. They do a silly, but very awesome version of "Defying Gravity" from Wicked that is a must see.
Thanks Greg! I've just recorded both run to you and defying gravity this weekend so it's currently in the chop shop for editing and should be out in the next couple of weeks :) I will certainly be looking into say something too! :)
Love this look for you! Great reaction. This cover really is beautiful.
They all sing in "I can't help falling in love with you" very pretty!
Great reaction and incisive observations and comments. I know what you mean by the 'back chill'. Bravo.
Thank you
That song could be listened to at any time...absolutely spine tingling...good point about the halo around Kirsten's head...:-)
Thanks and yes i have to agree the song is timeless.
This just occurred to me...you were expressing how nice the Scavi (Scott and Avi) harmonies were at the beginning of the song. I think the most amazing example of this is in "Coventry Carol" (yes, another Christmas song). It won't be a good reaction (because there is no real video portion), but you should listen to the PTX Yule Log video for "Coventry Carol" on RUclips. The Scavi and Mavi (Mitch and Avi) harmonies in that song are absolutely amazing.
Pentatonix Christmas carols are often the best recordings to hear Avi and Kevin sing, because many of the carols don't need the low end of most of their pop/rock/dance songs, and that frees the two of them up. (Nobody else in the group can beatbox like Kevin, and none of them had the deep and strong bass that Avi could provide.)
Awesome! Thanks for that I'll have to check it out :) I can really see what you mean about the difference in the songs for Avi and Kevin as well, I almost lean more towards the more carol type songs as my favourite because they have more of a role.
Beautiful video and cover arrangement of this song. I have seen this music video several times before but had never noticed specifically how they were framing Kirstin. Somehow I don't think that was an accident! Great reaction! Looking forward to the next one!
Thank you :) Admittedly if i wasn't so attuned to the awareness of lighting i too may have never noticed it but i think it was a very smart inclusion on their behalf accident or not :)
Nattering, That is so cool that you noticed that about the halo.
"Run to you" is another song they all sing in.
I get chills over my whole body when I listen to this!
wow they are so amazing, no instruments except their voices
That they are :)
He had to be encouraged to sing, which is a shame, because he's GOOD. He's got an amazing high range. But luckily for us, he also has his channel, and he definitely songs on that, and he also works, though it looks like mostly his instrumental work, with a group called Triptyq.
I don't know if the effect was deliberate, but I agree that I feel little in their work is accidental, the halo was clever.
I love the part in the "On my way home" documentary where he's excited that he was getting better after a voice lesson from Avi...then being humble to say that he doesn't have the "raw talent" of the rest of the group so he has to spend extra time practicing on "Beyonce" aka his cello. I have been around and in a cappella all my life and I know I'm better alone in my car, he's BEYOND gifted!!! #meatANDpotatoes4Ever
you may want to check out their "Sing Off" competition videos
I don't know if its true, but I once heard that Kevin didn't sing much in their early stuff because he was shy. Beatboxing was fine, but singing made him nervous. As I heard it, the others encouraged him to sing more and more as time went on. Like I said, I don't know if that's true or not, but he sings a lot more in their later stuff, so maybe its true.
Great reaction, as always! Kevin has a beautiful voice and I (as well as many other pentaholics) want to hear more from him (hopefully on their next album). I'm Avi biased so I agree with your comments about him and his voice. I can't wait for you to check out his solo work! :-)
Theres a little bit of solo Avi in the works as we speak :)
YEA! I wasn't going to repeat my request as I know you saw it. I'm not a pentaholic that constantly spams for the same requests over and over. I'm patient - I know you'll get to it eventually. Can't wait! Love ya!
Songs like this are why I listen to PTX Christmas music all year long. I’m going to have to go back and look for the halo effect around Kirstin. I never noticed that. Kevin has recorded some great solo work recently, under his own name. Very different from this, and absolutely excellent. Avi studied opera in school, and to me has the most dynamics in his voice. I loved his duet with Scott here. PTX has officially announced that Matt Sallee will be their new bass, and he is more like Scott in that he belts out songs, in contrast to Avi’s more subtle singing. I’m not saying one is better than the other, they’re just different. Avi also has solo work under Avriel and the Sequoias. Thank you for your great reaction.
Thanks Jean for the info and breakdown :)
Avi does have some solo stuff with his group Avriel and the Sequoias. You might also like Scott and Mitch's smaller group Superfruit. Great reaction as always!
Very observant. I didn't notice that halo effect. Good eye!
Very observant on the "halo" effect. To my knowledge, no one else has ever picked up on it. After watching it a couple more times I am convinced that effect is very deliberate. Kudos to you! Kevin does more singing on his cover of "Down" so you can check that one out. Also their performance of "Can't Hold Us" please.
Thank you :) Down might maybe be coming perhaps haha
I so agree with you. Mitch can do no wrong.❤️❤️
Beautiful
ooooo, my favorite song. Thaaaank u sooooo much
"Down" cover by Kevin!!!!
I think Yebba (Abbey Smith) gave one of the best vocal performance of 2017. Yebba-"My Mind" at So Far show in NYC. I have left comments with some other reaction friends and haven't gotten much feedback. I would really like to know what you have to say. Maybe I am wrong but I liked it.
I've popped them down on my to be recorded list for this coming week :)
Great job Nat. I noticed that the lighting came up about halfway through the song in the back of the cave. Wondered if it was symbolic of the resurrection? - Bill
I had never even considered the timing of the lighting, you might be onto somethign there!
Marvelous
If you liked Avi in this, you should check out his own group, Avriel and the Sequoias, as well as his work with Peter Hollens.
oo yes, thats something that I'll have on the channel very soon :)
yesssss
Gosh jumped right in.
on your comment about kevins voice
- yes it does touch one but all the others do too, it is just very rare to hear kevin thats why you feel like his is this important :D
imagine you didnt hear mitch sing in 90% of the songs or avi
I think it was because I hadn't really heard him sing like that so isolated at the point that I recorded this so it was new and exciting. They all have wonderful voices for sure but it was one of the few times I have heard the soul-fullness in context of Kevins voice so wanted to comment on it :)
The location is cave in Israel like the caves used for tombs. This tomb is empty ... hint hint.
You have become such a "PENTAHOLIC" and all the rest of us are so happy. Just a quick note: PTX has stated on their twitter page that new music is coming #soon. Maybe you should also join. I have heard that with the new bass (his name is Matt), there are 4 new songs that are coming
oooo Thank for the heads up I'll go pop on over there :)
Hey loving the reaction, I agree that Kevin needs to sing more, he has a part in pentatonix say something...also can you react to pentatonix papahouti as it's such a difference seeing them sing a French song
Oh wow I had no idea they sung in a different language, for sure I'll look into it :)
I recommend their cover of Say Something :)
Loved the reaction Nat. Id really like it if you maybe gave a look at another acapella group by the name of voiceplay. I really love their stuff. Especially their recent stuff. I think their phantom of the opera video featuring rachel potter would be a good start. Keep up the awesome work!
Sure thing ! if you want to pop down some links of stuff by them specifically I'll take a look :)
ruclips.net/video/BFGag3hzgqY/видео.html That is their phantom of the opera video featuring rachel potter.
ruclips.net/video/6JfyQKSslmQ/видео.html That is their It aint me cover featuring John Pinto Jr. There is a good bass note in there by Geoff Castelucci their wonderful bass singer.
ruclips.net/video/9IUlIOZ9LGQ/видео.html And finally(for now) that is their babay its cold outside cover featuring Shoshana Bean. In it the bass singer i previously mentioned is singing lead along side shoshana who has an angelic tone to her voice.
Hope you enjoy! :)
I noticed that.
Sweet flower dresses of Moses. Natalie. I adore you. Your cleft chin (AMAZING) smile, and adorable ears.Your ability to cut to soul of an image makes me smile. :-) Never change you are sooooo beautiful. J. keep on keeping on , just uh.
OK sweet Natter, time for a colab. Please react to "The Wizard of Ahhs" PTX & Todric Hall (one of their friends) since you love imagery it's right up your alley. Much love J.
P.S. Kevin's rarity helps with his amazing talent. Give you a rose every day it's no big deal, once or twice a year, now it's as special as a flower should be. So much love J.
This was the original Batcave"
It’s best to react to their Christmas stuff around Christmas lol
Maybe but I don't think good songs should be limited to specific months
Nattering haha yeah fair enough 😅
It’s not a christmas song. It’s a song about God
Batcave from batman movie
Hi Natalie! Great reaction as usual! I think it's about time for a Voctave (VOK-tiv, like octave with a v.) reaction. They are the amazing vocal group who backed up Kirstin and Jeremy in the "Disney Love Medley". As a princess of one of the Southern Kingdoms (which I hereby declare you to be), I would suggest the "Disney Princess Medley" at ruclips.net/video/aBCukAJwKN0/видео.html. You will LOVE it! Guaranteed!
oo yes I did enjoy the Disney love medley I might just have to check that out ! Thanks for the link John :)
Why do you hide the Like to Dislike ratio? Just curious
Hey Christian, I think youtube has become such a numbers game between people and I don't really want to get caught up in the politics of it so I prefer to just post videos I like without the added pressure of all that :)
Oh ok cool I respect that! I totally agree and it really shows that you always upload videos that you like and I hope you keep growing by doing that I'm still gonna be watching and hitting that LIKE button :D
Thank you :)
If you really want to see how talented Kevin is check this out! ruclips.net/video/IGjg193h4Ok/видео.html
For more Avi solo stuff suggestions are. "Black is the Color of my True Loves Hair" PTX "Light in the Hallway" or his true solo stuff like "Quarter Past Four"
Nothing to do with your commnet (which I liked) but I would like to hear why you call yourself "Nattering". Compared to my mother and our neighbours, who could natter for hours without saying a single meaningful word (around 1960), you're not even in the 4th division. ("Ooh, did you see that Mildred bought a joint of beef last week?", "No...", "Really?", "and people say that Mavis is pregnant", "Again?" ..., "And they've dig up their lawn and covered it in concrete",... "But that won't be good for the baby", ... "And have you heard about Mrs. Laughton's daughter?" . "Janet?" , "But she's only 13...") Conclusion: YOU DO NOT NATTER.
I LOVE THIS COMMENT!
firstly my name is Natalie, and i wanted something that encompassed my channel being a sit down and chat channel. My second angle is that i sometimes go into a flight of ideas where i can talk for hours about absolutely nothing and jump from topics faster then a kid in a skipping competition. so as much as its not really mindless (re the channel) its a bit of a poke at myself from the perspective of my friends and family haha! hope that explains it a bit better
