It doesn't matter how many times I hear this, it still gets to me. Especially when Mitch sings "When you kiss your little baby... You kiss the face of God.". That line just hits me.
The most beautiful part of this, to me, is the Avi and Scott duet. It flat out gets me. So beautiful. And then the deep harmonies Avi layers under the highest parts. Gives me goosebumps.
Kirstie's little side mouth creep when she sings has always been one of my favorite signatures of her singing talent, she still does it, altough she often opens fully to deliver powerful ,strong belts and vocals, when she really hits a groove and is having fun in the moment, the corner of her mouth kreeps into a smile still. it was more evident in the begining because it seems like the did more close ups then rather than wide shots of the whole group.
I know this is 7 months too late, but I also feel like it's fair to add that training has probably steered her away from it. Some of her earlier technique, whilst adorable and very unique, was likely not promoting the healthiest choices since there seemed to be a lot of jaw tension with it. (Of course, the fact that she sounded that good even with some technique flaws is just not fair. lol)
One of my favorite things about Pentatonix is their leadsharing. They pass it around like an Olympic baton, and ALWAYS put the song before their individual egos. They each shine and then put just as much into the BV’s. Very few of their songs just feature one or two singers. Their version of The Prayer is a perfect example…and hopefully their 4th Grammy.
Kirstie's side-singing is a deliberate tool that she deploys now and then for a certain effect. It's very obvious in their amazing version of "Mad World".
I love how excited you get when you hear beautiful music. This is definitely one of their best. Remember, thoughtless comments can have lasting impact. Kirsten went through some serious confidence problems because of comments made about her appearance. That little half-smile is so beautiful and enchanting , and it completely stole my heart. Your smile lights up the room and changes how you sound when you speak, i can’t imagine anyone saying that you do it purely for effect. They would have to deal with me ❤
Interestingly, as someone who's followed them for a while, I'd say more recently it seems like they're letting one person take lead whereas it was more common to hand off! I also think Kirsten is angled like that because her smile was famously like for quite a while (like Natalie Dormer (Anne Boleyn on The Tudors, Margaery Tyrell on GoT, hot girl who got to kiss Captain America in Cap 1), so she's doing it because she's smiling, heh. You can see it very clearly in the Daft Punk medley. I'd love to see your reaction to White Winter Hymnal or Come All Ye Faithful!
So many wonderful Christmas music from PTX, I love all of the older songs from them, Silent Night, Oh Come All Ye Faithful, and The First Noel are a few of my favorites. For non holiday music you should check out Avi's solo music. Change on the Rise is his most watched, Floating on A Dream is his latest album with 11 amazing tracks some of which he has released multiple versions through The 7 Layers sessions and Live at Sunset Sound. If you would like to really experience his beautiful lower register check out Black is the Color of my True Loves Hair with Peter Hollens.
This is it! This is the song. This song (and video) was my introduction to Pentatonix years ago, and I was immediately hooked. SO beautiful, SO chilling, SO meaningful. It is impossible for me to listen to that "acapella" section (without Kevin's percussion) and not get full body chills. Just WOW. Now for something just as awesome but completely at the other end of the high energy spectrum, please react to "O Come All Ye Faithful." It has an incredible Lion King vibe and a gospel choir, and it's impossible to not smile and tap your toes throughout. 😁 #subscriptionsquad
I know you've reacted to Voctave before, but I don't remember you doing a video for 'O Come, All Ye Faithful.' I don't have the words to describe how amazing it is. The ending will literally make your jaw drop! (They also do a moving cover of 'Mary Did You Know' with the man who wrote the song.)
I’m so sorry u missed them in Dallas! I saw them a couple weeks ago in Oakland and of course they were ALL fabulous but Kirstie was the standout to me, her voice was SO powerful and soul moving ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
It's about time that somebody reacted to real like you. They are amazing. Real like you is a girl band that had 6 members when it was formed on the x factor the band. They are a band of 5 now. They performed an original song on the x factor the band called 'Be Like Them' that was really beautiful. I think I'd like to see you react to it. I don't know why no one has reacted to them. It's been a few years since they formed and I haven't seen any reactions to them.
I enjoyed your enjoyment of this PTX version of Mary Did You Know?. And of course, I like to hear your technical comments and analysis, which is why I prefer reactions from knowledgeable musicians/voice coaches!
As many different renditions I have heard and they are all good arrangements but when Mark Lowry sings it (since he co-wrote ‘Mary Did You Know’), you truly hear the message of the song. Check Out the Voctave feat. Mark Lowry version
It amazes me that Avi, being of Jewish faith, sings so passionately, during Christian faith songs!!! I feel like the respect that each has for their differences, should be a model for the world, because it actually highlights our similarities!!!
This was the first PTX song where I saw Kevin sing. I almost fell out of my chair. I suggest their version of Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairies for your next reaction.
Please have a listen to their (live) version of Silent Night recorded in a church. It's sublime. And then to Avi's solo 'All is Well' (7Layers session), also recorded live in a church. Absolutely amazing!
Thank you for your analysis. You always seem to find something no one else does. They have too many "must" review Christmas songs. A few of the traditionals are Little Drummer Boy. The First Noel, Carol of the Bells (aka the song where Mitch doesn't breathe) 12 Days of Christmas. Matt is featured on Mr. Grinch. #subscriptionsquad
My favorite version of this song. Although I love the Home Free version of it also this one is remarkable. I really like their cover of "Cheerleader" very simple, peppy and harmonious. Classic Pentatonix.
Loved it, Loved it, Loved it. Pentatonix is so unique that all 5 of them could lead their own group just as Avi has done. I love your reactions because they are always from the heart, I recommend a song from their new Christmas Album "Holidays Around the World" especially "Prays For This World". Just a note, you might want to react to a South Korean singer Sohyang and her newly composed CCM song "Freedom" with the duo, Petra. Pray you had a wonder Thanksgiving. Thanks again for your wonderful reactions. Can't wait for your next pick, 😍😍❤❤
That quirky smile of hers is quite prevalent in their Daft Punk Medley. Perhaps her time on Broadway lessened that bit, but I tend to do the same thing just in a rich baritone-bass.
This video actually introduced me to this song. I don't think I'd ever heard it before that. This video actually surprised a lot of people because I'm pretty sure it was the first one where Kevin (their beatboxer) sang normally. I heard that he'd been too insecure about his voice (for normal singing) prior and the others encouraged him. Anyway, please please react to 'Wonder As I Wander - Epic Version' by Simon Khoroskiy. Its a lesser known and underrated Christmas song and I know you'll absolutely love it.
Great reaction Danielle!! This is a great cover and one of my favorites. However you must check out Voctave’s cover of this song!! It features Mark Lowry who is one of the writers of the song!! It is by far and away my favorite cover and is sure to blow your mind!!
I like to comment that this is the only PTX song I'm aware of where Kevin actually has twice as many solo lines to sing as Kirstin does! Speaking of Kirstin: I haven't been able to confirm this story, but I've seen it from several comments. The "side smile" is something she was apparently born with, caused by some nerve damage on one side of her face. It is quite prominent on earlier videos especially. Some reports say that there was some surgical intervention, some say just hard rehabilitation work (I suspect both), but in more recent videos it is much less noticeable, although you do still see it to a lesser extent. I've always thought it made her smile so infectious and charming that I kind of miss it, but I can see how a singer would definitely want to correct it if possible.
Just saw Pentatonix Christmas show (with Girl Named Tom) in Oakland. Amazing show! a must see! A couple recommendations for reaction Videos - Jackie Evancho 'Dream with me;,Lovers or 'the lords prayer'. More recently BYU Noteworthy just killed it with o holy night.
Generally they all have a solo in each song between Scott, Mitch , and Kirsten. Kevin is the Beatboxer, and Matt took Avi's place several years ago as the bass.
Can't believe you've only done a few PTX songs. You do know that there are about 190 of them out there, not counting Superfruit or any solo performances. There is not a single loser among that entire group either. Please give them more love.
You can really notice Kirstie singing out of the side of her mouth in “Wizard of Ahhhs”, and “Daft Punk Medley”…..she amazing, and who, in my opinion, adds the “magic” to the group.
Just Friday gone, my Mother, my Aunt, my Cousin's Cousin, the Co-Pastor and a member of our Church was rehearsing to sing "Mary Did you Know" and they were singing the original version and I thought why not sing Pentatonix's Version, my Mother said that they wouldn't be able to sing that Version, personally I would be able to sing it, but they won't really be able to. The point is that Pentatonix is so amazing that it's difficult to even attempt to sing their Version of a Song, not to mention singing in a Group is already hard as it is because "Harmonizing" isn't that easy.
About Kirsten's "side smile", which is well known and well loved by fans -- There are rumors that it was caused by either a cleft palate birth defect or a childhood injury to her mouth. She does have a small scar on one side of her upper lip but I have never seen anything official about any defect or injury. I tend to think it's just a bad singing habit; an opera-trained friend of mine says it can make it easier to hear your own voice on stage. It mostly disappeared around the time she did her 5-month Broadway feature in "Kinky Boots" in early 2018 and I have a theory that she did some extra vocal training to prepare her for the stress of a Broadway run and in the course of that corrected the mouth shape.
Yes, Kirstin dropped her „mouth corner“ singing a while ago, it seems. She does it quite intensely in the daft punk medley video. Since you csme back to PTX, please do „The Prayer“ (in case you haven‘t yet).
I'm not sure if anyone mentioned it but Kirsten said when she sings out of the side of her mouth she is trying to hear herself better to make sure she's singing the right notes
I just discovered your channel today watching your David Phelps O Holy Night reaction. I've watched a few reactions and you do them very well! I just subscribed, and if I can make a suggestion, I would love to see you react to Mark Lowry singing Mary Did You Know. He wrote the song years ago and sang it with the Gaither Vocal Band. It is a beautiful rendition of it, I think you'll like it! #subscriptionsquad
A couple of things ... I'm really surprised to hear that you haven't done many PTX reactions because you're one of my top five favorite reactors (you teach me things and notice stuff many reactors don't), and I hadn't noticed the lack. I guess because you've done a fair amount of VoicePlay, and I have trouble deciding who I like best between those two groups. From other commenters on bunches of their older videos, Kirstie's "side-mouth" is either a mild birth defect or the result of an injury and bothered her for a long time, especially after one of her music instructors apparently proclaimed that she'd never be a very good singer because of the shape of her mouth. (!!) I can't say if it was surgically corrected or just brought to heel by sheer effort, but it rarely appears anymore. I kind of miss it - visually it was adorable. I can categorically state that PTX is well known for giving each member a chance to be the center of the song in the vast majority of their catalog. They display nothing whatever of the "diva" when performing. And every member is a brilliant soloist in their own right. I think Matt is the only one who hasn't a channel of his own on the side. But they made a rule very early on that Pentatonix would be the central focus, while still allowing each one of them freedom to also do their own thing. Please add them to your list of recurring artists. They are extraordinary.
I had heard more or less the same about Kirstie (probably from the same comments), and noticed that she seemed to do it less. Then I saw her doing it again in videos I think were more recent. I wondered if fans may have complained about missing it because it is, as you said, adorable.
@Tiffany Tosh Have you ever heard of anyone having surgury for that? Name? One singing coach reactor ive seen remarked lightly on it as perhaps distracting for the audience, and easily fixed with some training.
Did not know you were in Big D - I almost went and saw Pentatonix there last Christmas but the timing was wrong when I flew in - was born and raised there....
Now you need to review "In the Bleak Midwinter" by Groove for Thought (another alumnus of The Sing Off now disbanded but composed of music instructors, HS, community College and university). Acapella
You need to listen to "Mary Did You Know" by Voctave ft. Mark Lowery. Mark wrote this song, and Buddy Greene put the music to it. OMG!!! Nothing like the song writer's version!
#subscription squad - HI Danielle from the UK, love your reactions. I would love for you to react to some of Avi Kaplin's solo work. They are amazing. Healing and I feel alright. And an older one of PTX say something. Thanks Simon
LOVE this song so much! Thank you for your priceless reaction! Please do more Pentatonix. They are top tier vocal geniuses! They stack and layer so damn well! And they harmonize better than any choir or acapella group out there in my humble opinion. There are so many PTX Christmas songs to chose from. "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen" is a great one that demonstrates their talent in a faster pace ruclips.net/video/ku7ohU1IGls/видео.html
Don't get me wrong...I love PTX and what they did with "Mary Did You Know", However....The Acapella version by Voctave with Mark Lowry (the one who wrote the song) is the best! Even if you don't react be sure you give it a listen....
re: Kirsten's mouth when singing - of course these are recorded in a studio, and they lip sync the video, so I am not sure if she sings with that mouth shape in studio.
Kirsten doesn't always use the 'side mouth,' but it IS a 'trademark' feature of her singing style. When you have the time and inclination, you really need (my opinion) to dive deeper into PTX. Here is a link to Scott introducing the group live... ruclips.net/user/shortsu3bjDIyVRk0 ) ANYWAY... I have been a Pentaholic for years. Even after being introduced to the other 'big three,' VoicePlay and Home Free, PTX remains may all time favorite. As much as you LOVE amazing harmonies, you HAVE to explore them! I think my favorite 3 minutes and 17 seconds of music... EVER... is their version of Auld Lang Syne. Here's a link... ruclips.net/video/nIR2GR254S8/видео.html Love your reactions! I'll see you again (virtually) soon!
Have you considered doing one of their non religious or Christmassy cover songs? They've done Radioactive with Lindsey Stirling, The Sound Of Silence, Daft Punk, Bohemian Rhapsody (amazing version, almost as good as Queen), Cheerleader, Shallow, among others, including a goofy version of Frozen's Let It Go.
PTX just owns Christmas, imo. I think this one and their rendition of Silent Night are their two best. Silent Night may just edge this one because it's done live, off mic.
Since your doing a December/Christmas reactions. You should check out Small Town Titans "Your A Mean On Mister Grinch". It's a metal version of the classic song.
Yes, you are wrong. PTX almost always let’s everyone sing a solo which is what I love about this group. The three main singers have been freinds since high school and they all, including Avi and Kevin, have an input in the arrangements. Kevin is the only one who does not always sing because, well you can’t sing and beatbox. But even he has had his singing moments when not beatboxing like in this song. Also, when Avi is singing or Matt now that Avi left, Scott will do the base part. This is a very versatile group and each is talented on there own. They have there own single careers going. Avi left the group but is putting out music on his own. Kirsty has done broadway and has done her own album. Both Scott and Mitch have done music just the two of them and also on there own. I think the variety in this group makes them very different from most a cappella groups.
While this just barely beats out Voctave's version (with Mark Lowry and you gotta catch Kate's final note for the ease and talent of a superb soprano) for me, I'd say that VoicePlay's version of Grinch beats them simply because the Grinch should always be theatrical. I mean, for over the top...it's always the Grinch. After hearing their "O Come, All Ye Faithful," it is difficult to sing it straight up from the caroling books now. Their talent also changed a couple of my not-so-favorites to top-of-the-listers, namely their "LIttle Drummer Boy" and "12 Days of Christmas." Love love love Pentatonixtime, ahem I mean Christmas time. Aren't they the same thing?
Hi Danielle ! I've heard Kirstie make fun of herself about this. She is aware of this bad habit and is working with a vocal coach to over comet this. For the most part I believe that she has put this behind her. Although, many people loved it when she did this.
Your comment that Kristin was singing out of the corner or her mouth: well, they sang this in the studio and then lip-synced for the video, right? Look at the candles. :)
Kirstin l believe, was born with a cleft palate, which left her with a crooked mouth. When she made it big, she had it corrected. This is why she doesn't sing "out of the corner of her mouth" anymore. It was not a choice.
It doesn't matter how many times I hear this, it still gets to me. Especially when Mitch sings "When you kiss your little baby... You kiss the face of God.". That line just hits me.
Me too!!!
The "Great I am" makes me cry every time! Glory to Jesus Christ!
I'm glad I not the only one in tears 😭 🤧🤧🤧
The most beautiful part of this, to me, is the Avi and Scott duet. It flat out gets me. So beautiful. And then the deep harmonies Avi layers under the highest parts. Gives me goosebumps.
ITS PERFECT
Kirstie's little side mouth creep when she sings has always been one of my favorite signatures of her singing talent, she still does it, altough she often opens fully to deliver powerful ,strong belts and vocals, when she really hits a groove and is having fun in the moment, the corner of her mouth kreeps into a smile still. it was more evident in the begining because it seems like the did more close ups then rather than wide shots of the whole group.

One of the things I love is when Mitch takes the high line from Kirstin. He is an amazing counter tenor.
Just to add another Pentatonix songs. O' Come All Ye Faithful. What a blessing to watch and hear these extremely talented individuals. Thanks again. 😀
Kirstie's side-singing is a deliberate tool that she deploys now and then for a certain effect. It's very obvious in their amazing version of "Mad World".
I hope you have a fabulous 2023 Danielle. Thank you for reacting to this song. PTX has a received a Grammy nomination for their song Evergreen.
AMAZING GRACE is another song where they each get a solo...and is fantabulous
I love how excited you get when you hear beautiful music. This is definitely one of their best. Remember, thoughtless comments can have lasting impact. Love your PENTATONIX reactions! Can't wait for MANY MORE!!!👏😃
This is a great arrangement and it is my second favorite. (Tops is Voctave ft. Mark Lowry - the lyricist of the song.)
concur. The acoustics alone for this one are better though.
Agree!!
Agreed, as many renditions I have heard they are good arrangements but when Mark sings it, you hear the message of the song.

Messianic Jew 💞
One parent is Jewish & one is Christian....I believe. Growing up he celebrated both Hanukkah and Christmas.
Jesus was Hebrew so it's not that farfetched to be honest. :)
The Jewish faith just don't believe that he was the messhia
This was the first PTX song where I saw Kevin sing. I almost fell out of my chair. I suggest their version of Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairies for your next reaction.
Kirstin was born with a cleft lip/pallett. The habit has faded but it used to help her sing better, probably due to mobility issues
I think she had surgery to correct it. If you look at old videos, she had a crooked mouth when talking as well as smiling. Now she doesnt.
Please have a listen to their (live) version of Silent Night recorded in a church. It's sublime. And then to Avi's solo 'All is Well' (7Layers session), also recorded live in a church. Absolutely amazing!

They did an amazing job with this one. I mean, theynalways do, but especially with this video. Amazing.
That cute little half smile is like a warm blanket on a cold night for me.
You need to watch "The Prayer"! Absolutely perfect!!
I just SUBSCRIBED.
THIS IS WHY PTX IS THE BEST A CAPELLA GROUP IN THE WORLD🌎.
🎵😁🎶
Man, I have chills
Scott's rock voice is my fav of his styles.
PTX RULES Christmas music, and with their new album they have 6.25 hours of Christmas music!!! all we play Christmas Eve. LOVED That!
Loved it, Loved it, Loved it. Pentatonix is so unique that all 5 of them could lead their own group just as Avi has done. I love your reactions because they are always from the heart, I recommend a song from their new Christmas Album "Holidays Around the World" especially "Prays For This World". When I first saw their video of "Daft Punk", I immediately fell in love with Kirstie's "side-smile".
THE PRAYER,THE ENDING IS AWSOME.Oyea by them rkr~!
This version is great!!! You need to listen to Voctave’s version with the songwriter singing with them also. Tremendous song
She sings side of her mouth in Disney Love Medley, especially when she looks over at Jeremy.
Great reaction! By the way you have a beautiful voice yourself!!
This video actually introduced me to this song. I don't think I'd ever heard it before that. Seconded! Danielle, if you have not heard Voctave's cover of Mary Did You Know, you are in for a treat!
And Thirded! Hits differently hearing it from the songwriter!

Generally they all have a solo in each song between Scott, Mitch , and Kirsten. Kevin is the Beatboxer, and Matt took Avi's place several years ago as the bass.
While Pentatonix isn't my favorite of the Big 3, THIS is the definitive version of this song. When they hit it out of the park, they REALLY hit it!
This is a great rendition, but I must disagree. Voctave with Mark Lowry is *the* definitive version.
Can't believe you've only done a few PTX songs. You do know that there are about 190 of them out there, not counting Superfruit or any solo performances. There is not a single loser among that entire group either. Please give them more love.

Oh PLEASE do their version of Little Drummer Boy!!
You should react to Home frees version of this. Not only is it great, but Adam's work on this is Amazing.
You do know the trio is from Arlington Tx so local to you
I'm not sure if anyone mentioned it but Kirsten said when she sings out of the side of her mouth she is trying to hear herself better to make sure she's singing the right notes
You really need to react to Voctave doing "O Come all ye faithful" The lead singer is amazing.
Kirstin does that with her mouth to archive certain sounds a vocal coach pointed that out
I just discovered your channel today watching your David Phelps O Holy Night reaction.

Recommend their Twelve Days Of Christmas. They make it sound good.
@@DennisKovacich I thought she had surgery to correct it…
@@tiffanytosh1569 Ridiculous.
@@lengould9262 why is that ridiculous?
@Tiffany Tosh Have you ever heard of anyone having surgury for that? Name? One singing coach reactor ive seen remarked lightly on it as perhaps distracting for the audience, and easily fixed with some training.
Kirstie sings out of the side of her mouth when she is doing the Disney Princess voice
Acapella
I was gob-smacked the first time I heard this.
You need to listen to "Mary Did You Know" by Voctave ft. Mark Lowery. Mark wrote this song, and Buddy Greene put the music to it. OMG!!! Nothing like the song writer's version!
also have a listen to
Hom3e Free's version of this. They are both FANTASTIC, but it is just the differences between the 2 groups
#subscription squad - HI Danielle from the UK, love your reactions. I would love for you to react to some of Avi Kaplin's solo work. They are amazing. Healing and I feel alright. And an older one of PTX say something. Thanks Simon
Love you 🎉❤ ptx 😢😅
Singing from the side of his mouth is one of the things that made Sammy Davis jr unique sounding.
How about "Cold Hard Cash" by Home Free. It is an original by Austin Brown.
Of all the songs PTX performs, this is Mitch’s favorite.
Earphones for full appreciation.
You have to hear 'O Come All Ye Faithful', by Voctave.
One of my favourite renditions and a great reaction! Do yourself a favour though and react to "The Prayer" You won't regret it, I promise!
re: Kirsten's mouth when singing - of course these are recorded in a studio, and they lip sync the video, so I am not sure if she sings with that mouth shape in studio.
I'll see you again (virtually) soon!
what headphones do you recommend to listen to them?
React to their Little drummer boy please 🙏🏻🙏🏻
They’re music 🎵 is so beautiful & touches the soul
Hi Danielle ! I've heard Kirstie make fun of herself about this. She is aware of this bad habit and is working with a vocal coach to over comet this. For the most part I believe that she has put this behind her. Although, many people loved it when she did this.
Congratulations you're now a mom
Please react to their renditions of Amazing Grace, Imagine, and O Come All Ye Faithful.🎼💙🎄🕯
A beautiful song and I love the breakdown but don't forget to listen to the words.
Not to take away from PTX But Home Free's Mary Did You Know is Pretty Awsome Also....enjoy
