Well you know well, he was the shit through out the 1980's. Only us clued in back in the day could relate. Oh what, Wind Power is playing over Headphones, gotta get my groove on. Damn the flute hit me hard.
It was one of those albums where the "hit" was one of the weaker songs from the collection. TD probably would have been bigger - for a short period - if he would have continued to make the same songs over and over. By the time GAoW came out (Having toured with and written "New Toy" for Lena Lovitch) he was probably over it and he began to create lush songs like "The Good Earth" or "Dissidents".
Thomas Dolby's Golden Age of Wireless is ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC!! She Blinded me With Science, One of Our Submarines, Wind Power, Europa and the Pirate Twins, Love it, still sounds great today, the dj
Peaked at just No. 67 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1983. Song was originally released in the U.K. in late 1981. Should’ve been a MUCH bigger hit here in the States. Awesome stuff.
I rememeber it well here in the states but not much video rotation on the tele luv🇬🇧✌❤ this dude was super badass and way ahead of his time but theres something about this one.its weird.
I remember hearing this song in late 1981 and I just could not find a copy anywhere in Southern California. Back when a record store would maaaaybe get 1-2 import copies if you were lucky and those copies always went first to the smarty pants know it all's behind the counter. It wasn't until well in 1982 that I tracked down a copy and then The Golden Age of Wireless came out and I went nuts for it. Played it constantly for months. Brilliant stuff!
There's an amazing amount of UK and European music from this era that never made the hop over here and a surprising amount of it I only found out about recently
I didn't have MTV, so I saw this on some late-night music video program. I only saw it once until RUclips came along. When I saw it in the early 80s, it felt cutting edge and the future.
Damn people dont realize how killer music was when mtv had first started.its fucking 2021 and im 47 watching this video at 3:00 in the afternoon cuz its been in my freaking head for weeks.its so badass.how has noone covered this song ever!!!????i dont get it.this dude was WAY ahead of his time.
My fave TD tune! The original version came out in 1982. That summer my cousin and I went to Mi Wuk CA from Orange County for a later family trip to Yosemite. It was a weird time up there, and if you know that area, you'll remember what I mean (Charles Ng and Leonard Lake). We stopped at Sonora, and walked into a cafe called Europa. Everyone turned around and looked at the 15 and 16 year old girls. It was a weird time, and I'm reminded by this amazing song
Had not an idea Thomas Dolby wrote this song. I’ve searched for years and years trying to find this again. It was getting to Point where I gave up. Maybe it was a song it just dreamt lol. Well not to be. It’s real and glad to have found it again. I swore back In the day this track got some healthy AirPlay. They never said who the artist was Remember this was far back pre internet days.
You should get the album that it was on, an absolute piece of art, and TDs best album to date. The Golden Age of Wireless. Windpower is my favourite, also on there is Radio Silence, and The Airwaves. ruclips.net/video/y6I2ZMDZZKA/видео.html You should watch this one off gig on my channel too, it was only on TV once back around 1981/2. Back then though you could only load up to 10 mins of video to YT, so i had to split it into smaller sections. About 30 mins in total.
@@jezzyby47 thank you for the recommendations. Never really gave Thomas Dolby much thought tossed him aside as a one hit wonder. Well no longer. I’m on it now. I just heard the sequel to this song as well. Love it.
Nupe/2 Alpha Theta TSU/Fall 1986. Totally unashamed that I use to bump this in High school Memphis Central High, a lot of people didn’t appreciate the musicianship of Mr.Dolby?!, my Man has skills!!!👌🏿
I'd argue his creative peak was The Flat Earth. One of the most outstanding productions I've ever heard. I don't see how anyone could hear Dissidents or the title track and not believe he deserved so much more.
There was no easily- accessible video for this song when it first came out. Therefore many of us heard it hundreds if not thousands of times assuming it was a techno love song about a girl he once knew and lost.
The track is from GAOW. Can't remember where the video is from, think it was the video which could be purchased at the same time? There was a special concert done by the BBC around this time 82/83 ish which is on my channel too which someone else stole from me, then stitched it all back together again as the full concert then re-uploaded it on his channel. There were a few extra tracks not shown on the BBC version. The whole lot is now on Thomas Dolby's own channel on YT and remastered. My version was 4:3, aspect ratio as that's all that was available in 1982. When i uploaded them back around 2009 you could only upload about 5 minutes of video at a time so i split it into the separate tracks - now you can upload an entire concert if you want to. That version of Europa is very similar to this video though, just a bit longer as there's a load of faffing around before the song starts. He was interviewed at Riverside about the synths at the link below.
So glad I was an 80’s teen! Best music ever!
🐾atively. ❤
I'll be honest, I was young when it came out and I thought it was the most landmark record I'd heard since Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band.
The Golden Age Of Wireless is a PERFECT album, a masterpiece. Why Thomas wasn’t huge is a complete mystery to me
Probably because every other album he did had maybe one hit on it. This album was a classic because they were all fantastic songs.
Couldn't Agree More!
Thomas Dolby huge? The guy was like 5'6".

Brilliant composition.
I was in my 20's when this song and related video came out. It motivated me to visit Europe!
That thumping bass that starts at 0:20. So much with so little.
One of the best songs ever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This song & video is right down my alley
he’s so insanely british. i love this guy
Essential 1980-1983 New Wave sound. Much better than "She Blinded Me With Science", in terms of radio play
This song barely cracked the top 40 in England and didn't chart in America, while She Blinded Me With Science went to number 5 in US...
every tune on that album was good.

thomas dolby's best song
I **do** love this song, but his BEST? Nah. That would be the brilliant - "I Love You, Goodbye" - lyrically and musically.
Me gusta la musica de thomas dolby.
Kathleen Beller. Beautiful actress.
Eastern bloc has to be part of this conversation. Such a follow up but was basically ignored. An unbelievable pop song.
See also Annabel Lee by Poe and Lolita by Nabakov. This refers to those. 👍

Ooo she she wa wa... oh, wait!
Real new wave -- not synthpop, which is what we called "new wave" when were kids -- was probably the most interesting music ever made, to this day
I always thought this song was Synthpop.
Thomas' son just did a parody of this song with Corona Virus as a theme
Tim Friese-Greene talk talk, Dolby, xtc😉
Alton Brown should really get the band back together .
