I have a tankard too but mines a lot less fancy, it’s got a kinda ear shaped handle and no engravings and I’ve never polished it because I never realized pewter was shiny, it’s a dull almost lead color but it’s got nice thick walls and is solid enough to bash someone’s head without it breaking It’s a good mug
@@commoncommentatingcommento8683 Ye I have a feeling the fancy mug in the video would break tho, or at least get a really nasty dent that could even put a hole in it somehow
Yes, placing the shilling at the bottom of the tankard was a myth. Can you imagine what would happen to the recruiting sergeant if he tried that in an inn full of the man's friends. Another one which is also a myth is that when a man would go to pay for the drinks the sergeant would offer to pay for them instead and give the man the money. The sergeant is then supposed to tell the officer the man has taken the king's shilling and is therefore enlisted. Again this would not happen. The enlisted man would have to voluntarily enlist or it was not legal. Interestingly I know the Royal Air Force used to pay those who enlisted the what was the equivalent amount to the king's shilling in the early 70s. Anyway, myth or not I love the idea of the King's Shilling Tankard. Turns out they are sold on Amazon. Guess what I want for Christmas.

Pewter (/ˈpjuːtər/) is a malleable metal alloy consisting of tin (85-99%), antimony (approximately 5-10%), copper (2%), bismuth, and sometimes silver.[1] Copper and antimony (and in antiquity lead) act as hardeners, but lead may be used in lower grades of pewter, imparting a bluish tint. Pewter has a low melting point, around 170-230 °C (338-446 °F), depending on the exact mixture of metals.[2][3] The word pewter is probably a variation of the word spelter, a term for zinc alloys (originally a colloquial name for zinc).[4]

They sell these on Amazon. They're 100 bucks. No, I'm not kidding. These things are extremely weak and cheap, it's like something you'd find at a truckers gas station (like love's).

i’m so happy they still make this show
12am, and instead of sleep I listen/watch how it's made videos.
Awesome history lesson.....
Thank you How's it's made.
Keep the hits coming, I absolutely LOVE your creations.
I filled a Pewter beer stein with 90% Constitutional silver! Love seeing how these steins are made!
I've seen those videos... Really cool! Watching that stein fill up with old silver coins.
I will never turn down an opportunity to watch How It’s Made
I'm actually surprised that How It's Made is still ongoing.
If I’m not mistaken, I think they’ve just been rereleasing older episodes.
@@eggsamich Oh? So they haven't made a new episode in a while?
@@donottouchmyfood Thanks for informing me.
Yeeee I used to watch them when I was like 7 and now I'm rewatching them at 18
Lol,💜
Originally the first tableware was made of lead, and affected the noble' health. Solid tin became the common metal after that.
Dude when I hear the intro to this show I just pass OUT! It’s the only show that does that for me and I THANK YOU!!
How It's Made is the best show on Science Channel :D
That's sad. This is a crap show for low IQ people who can only handle simple information with video/pictures.

Any mug that can bash a person head without breaking is a winner

I can only imagine the show creators trying to pitch this to tv executives.
"How about we have this show where you just watch people make stuff?"
I remember watching this one when it was releasing on the science channel. Amazing episode
I love how it's made!
Me too!
The narration improved a lot. Also the video quality. And don't have unecessary puns at the end. 👍
Amazon has these in the states, just ordered one.
Bring back the ol' punssss pleaseeee
Certainly a work of art and master craftmanship, most uplifting. Sadly, I don't enjoy drinking out of metal.
The king's shilling tankard is currently $100 on Amazon
I love How it's Made.
Especially the Plumbus episode

What is sodder? When you sodder the handle on. Shouldn’t it be SOLDER.

I don't get the science channel on my satellite package, so this is my only way to get my sci channel fix
Everytime he says "pewter" I can't help but think of batman from the Lego Batman movie
they are basically making counterfeit money
When exactly in US did the L become silent in Solder ?
They all say "sauder" how that came about god knows...
It sounds lazy
@@ItsMrAssholeToYou Touchy ! perhaps it would have been better in retrospect to ask why, to cater for pedants ?
Where are these sold and how much, plz? Thanks.
Science channel Can you do how it's made mixed salad, frozen fruit and inner tubes next
me and my dad used to watch how its made alot
These videos are cool
that handle didnt quite get full coverage on the bottom. Surprised they missed that
Buncha Brits in the comments complaining about how the Commonwealth says solder. Remind me how y’all pronounce aluminum? 😉
Sodder? What the heck is SODDER?!?! And yes, I do know what solder is LOL
Can you show us how plumbuses are made? I always wondered.
Lol God, the Rick and Morty reference! Nice!
Flux, cleans the metal from finger prints & other foreign mater so the soder sticks

When is going to be How it's made "How it's made"?
Like the program but it's SOLDER not SORDER.
Since pewter can be made of different metals; what exactly is pure pewter?
Pewter (/ˈpjuːtər/) is a malleable metal alloy consisting of tin (85-99%), antimony (approximately 5-10%), copper (2%), bismuth, and sometimes silver.[1] Copper and antimony (and in antiquity lead) act as hardeners, but lead may be used in lower grades of pewter, imparting a bluish tint. Does the Science Channel heart comments? I absolutely love How It's Made.
Why do americans pronounce SOLDER as sodder !
Wait isn't pewter like lead or is that a myth or something?
Cheaper versions can use some lead, but it tarnishes.

I'm a little disappointed. I thought a shilling would be this cool coin. But it's just a quarter! Also, I'm from the states.

It's not a myth, the tankards had lids to stop the act of dropping the shilling in the tankard.
I guessed it had something to do with BUGS!

Would be nice if a machine made all these, without the hotglue, and if the metal was solid.

Why can't Canadians pronounce 'solder'? It's not a form of sexual perversion, it has an L in it!!
