Brilliant movie, it brought back to me how I almost adopted my son out under the pressure from my parents, being only 15 it was hard to "fight" them, until I was told to sign the adoption papers (by my mother) and I started screaming, "I don't want to adopt my baby out!" The welfare lady said "You don't have to." and put the pen down. I felt liberated and am so glad I kept him, he's now 44 with 4 beautiful children.

Love this true movie. I'm not david , but his wife, to explain the name shown. Like you, almost had to let my son go. Much older than you, but homeless, living in a mother & baby home. The Dr Barnado's officer came to see me, I explained I had to have a C section, and be sterilised...didn't know what to for the best. He said I would have the baby with me for 10 days, then a foster mum, then it would take 3 months for adoption to go through..With good friends and good luck, I had my son, then a place, then a job with my own house, so when he was 6 weeks old, there we were. he's now 44, good work position, lovely wife and 2 beautiful daughters...

In actual life Anthony wanted to find his mother and returned to the convent several times, but they'd never tell him her whereabouts. They told him she abandoned him. And by the time Philomena tracked him down it was too late.... that is so incredibly sad it breaks my heart.

It is hard to wrap your mind around the kind of prejudice that unwed pregnant girls were subjected to. I grew up with the threat that I would be sent to a catholic home for unwed girls in Chicago and would give up the baby if I was ever to get pregnant. It was truly looked upon as a sin worse than murder. Finally, a movie that shows the agony that some women live with when they are forced to give up a child. Another shameful period in history.

It not worthy of an award either. Do you know most of the murderers/criminals come from, they are fatherless children - these children often become a cancer for the society. For example, Charles Manson.

@Sonjoy I guess fathers should step tf up then, huh? Cause they certainly weren't secreted away for 9 months- losing education, time with family, etc. They weren't possibly dying from pregnancy complications.... just galavanting along. And you know some of these are r*pe babies. So yeah. Let's have a talk about those fathers. It's about dang time.

This was such a beautiful film, I absolutely loved it. The trailer tries to make this seem like a comedy, and while there were some funny parts, do not let this trailer fool you. There's a lot that this trailer is not showing you (which is a good thing since they tend to give everything away usually), it's actually a much darker film. I still loved it though and I can't help but feel so terrible to all the poor mothers out there still trying to find their children.

This movie will tear a hole through your soul, drain you of every tear you have left in your body, and set up residence in your mind.
What genius. I'd like to meet everyone that made this film and thank them. Their use of dramatic action to convey what lesser talents would spend dozens of script pages of dialogue to explain was, I can't put it into words, just, as perfect as you can get in an imperfect world. The legendary Robert McKeee could use it as a poster child for his teachings.
Watch this movie. If your a laymen, you'll love it, if you're a writer, an artist of any kind, you'll see the gift we all search for, the level of talent we all hope for.
As a writer myself, someone who's trying to put his own film together, I beg the universe to unite this posting and anyone involved in making this film in hopes that such mastery could be brought to my own project.

I just finished reading the book. It's SO beautifully written (feels like a novel, but it's history/biography -- the majority of the pages are about the life of her son, with the early chapters focused on Philomena and her tone in the convent). The subject matter is, of course, difficult and heartbreaking. I'll need to watch the film now...

This story breaks my heart when I think how Anthony tried to find his mother, and his mother tried to find him, and the nuns wouldn't tell him anything. Even though he went back 3 times. But I wish that Philomena hadn't kept it a secret for as long as she did. If she hasn't, she might have been able to find him before his death.

Don't watch this movie until you read the book. The book was absolutely amazing. It tells the story from Anthony's "Micheal's" eyes.

Hello everyone. I read the book Philomena and I was wondering if the movie is anything similar to the book. The book is all about Michael Hess and the movie seems to be about Philomena. I have not watched the movie yet but i dont really know what to expect.
