Videos like this are so helpful. Most tutorials make it look like the artist never makes any mistakes at all, and if they do, they're tiny and easily fixable. Then when the rest of us get into the weeds, it's easy to get into that spiral of "there's no fixing this, I suck, etc." Seeing a pro go off the rails AND show how to fix it is so valuable.
This is brilliant!! I remember thinking at about 1.5 hours into the Livestream that you weren’t going to be able to finish to your standards. The point you made here (Identifying what you want to change and coming up with a plan) is priceless!! Every artist experiences mishaps in their works-in-progress but being to evaluate and know how to remedy them is what makes a true professional! This may be your your most helpful video yet! BRAVO!!
Thanks!!
FANTASTIC. Probably the most genuinely helpful video on youtube right now. This is what separates a seasoned artist versus a beginner. A pro has learned to deal with mistakes and this actually shows an artist dealing with the toughest ogre an artist faces: a wrong turn. It shows self critique, tenacity, and an over coming spirit. THAT's how you do it!
I have just watched this, and at the end, sat back, saying, "That is fantastic!" / "Wow, that is so helpful!" over and over. Thanks Lisa!!!!! An artist for many years, I'm pretty new to coloured pencils, and this has been a huge help. .
So talented!
I love that you are humble enough to admit that a piece might need a little more work ❤
I'm a new artist and getting past the "ugly phase" seems like it can take forever sometimes, but it's very inspiring to see that even a pro needs to put in more time now and again 🤗
Thank you for sharing! You could easily have touched this up without saying anything to anyone, but sharing the experience makes it easier for me to accept that I'm not alone in needing to invest just a little bit more time to get something to where i think it needs to be ❤
I'm glad it was helpful! I am always saying to layer till it looks good, I couldn't resist taking the advice myself :D
Perfectly said!
This is so helpful! I'm still at that stage in my 'artist development' where I have to fix almost every painting I do 😆 Identifying the 'mistakes' is almost harder than fixing them.
If it helps, I don't think I've ever created anything that didn't need a fix or 50 lol.
I missed this stream, but hey, in a way a good thing this "fail" stream happened. It shows that no matter how experienced we are, we still get issues here and there and it's okay (and really, you didn't screw up. all you needed was more time)
Lovely, how great to see how you figured out what the painting needed to make it what you wanted! You are such an inspiration to me, I really learned a lot in this video. You are one h__ of a teacher! Thank you so much!
Ohhh You teach so well!! Thank you! 🙏
Glad it was helpful!
This is so cool! I remember in a previous video you saying something like “you have to learn how to fix mistakes in every medium”, and this really illustrates well how to do it in colored pencils. Awesome! 🙀
Thanks! :D
When a drawing doesn't look like i want to, i still want to fix it and think about your "layer until it looks good" 😊 sometimes i use pastel powder mixed with OMS and it could work too. Do you have tips for starting into digital drawing? I can't wait to get into it!
My best digital tip is to work in layers so you can easily erase and adjust specific layers without messing anything else up :D
And remember to check what layer you are currently working on in case you have to change a mistake. No joke it sound like a duh thing but it's really easy to draw 2 hours in the wrong layer and have a diffucult time fixing a mistake :)
good lesson/example. Thanks!
I love your bee, great work and thanks for the reminder to not give up, it’s just not finished. 😊
Thank you! 😊
It is beautiful! Always great advice.❤ Looking forward to the next livestream!
Thanks! This week we're painting a firefly night forest! That should be fun!!
Good for you...thank you!
:D
This was such a good lesson for me. Don't give up on a piece of work if the result wasn't what you wanted. Keep working at it and it may turn out fabulouis like yours did! Thank you, LIsa😊
Glad you liked it :D
Great job, Lisa! - Jason
Thank you :D
Great video.
Thank you :)
What about using the white Pitt pen over coloured pencils? I know it's not that opaque, but in most cases I don't need the most opaque result, so a few layers of the white Pitt pen does it for me. Of course, will this be more archival than using acrylics or gel pen?
It's not going to be archival over wax and oil based colored pencil unfortunately.
What a process 😮 thanks for sharing the details with us! Would you mind listing all tools you've used for the pic and fix, I didn't quite catch it, probably since I'm not yet familiar with all terms and brands, and I'd like to learn :)
curious if you have ever used textured fixative by brush and pencil . It is specifically made to add more texture and tooth , when there isnt any more for colored pencil.
its amazing how much we can fix something when we dont have a time crunch lol😀
Hi Lisa, you are such an inspiration, thank you for all of your wonderful tips. I do have a question. If you were to spray a fixative over the color pencil, would that give you the opportunity to add additional layers?
Sort of. Nothing like what the eraser will do. The only time I really liked a workable fixative was the brush and pencil one when working on sanded paper. On hot pressed watercolor paper like this, I prefer the eraser method by a long shot. The workable fixatives are quite limited on watercolor paper.
Thank you ❤
Where does one find this magic eraser, I'm not seeing it in a google search.
It’s a Faber-Castell Perfection Eraser.
