Oh, and "Roll, Boys, Roll" is another good one for the purpose. 😉
Haha what a great story. Shanties make great songs for so many contexts. They make road trips way more more fun, and my dad and I belt them out when we go fishing as we're putting the boat in the water or driving across the lake. The marina owners are friends of ours and they love it (as long as no one is fishing nearby, don't want to scare them off lol). But it's just fun to do
OK, Long Johns, here's a collab. opportunity with one of the educational channels (Steve Mould?): get some of the forwards from the Bristol Bears around a capstan on Bristol harbourside, and see how much faster they can haul a cable if they're keeping time with a capstan shanty! I am pretty sure that Capri-Omni is right, otherwise, why would shanties even be a thing?
They’re not lying about 70 verses. Myself and about 30 other medieval reenactors sang this around a roaring fire pit with bottles of mead flowing. We must have been going for about 20 minutes until one of us shouted “and an end to the song wouldn’t do us any harm!” We sang the verse out and stopped the songs, cheering like madmen.
I now want to see a ten hour video that is literally verse after verse of this, ending with that. Probably not safe for it to be done in one take by one group though.
This makes me think of navvies putting tracks down. There was the job of being the main singer (I think they were mostly the supervisor) if the song went on practically all da that might be what you want from the shift. this could be relevant but it might not be.
I will 100% let you film at Bristol Aquarium if you want for a future music video!! In front of our large coral tank and native fish tank it would look incredible!! :D I'm sure Davey Jones the octopus would love to hear you sing 🐙

Agreed! I never played AC Black Flag but I heard about the game soundtrack and I enjoy listening to their sea shanty tracks on RUclips and RUclips music. I do think the guys who sing for the Black Flag soundtrack sound really good.. however in my opinion the Longest Johns definitely sound better! Lowlands Away is probably my favorite from the Black Flag shanty soundtrack.

What I've learned from this: Roll the Old Chariot verses are just about anything with six syllables
I count 7 syllables, but that principle works. -- "(1)And (2)a (3)drop (4)of (5)Nel(6)son's (7)blood" / "(1)And (2)a (3)ce(4)llar (5)full (6)of (7)beer" / etc.
I think you do have to start with a drop of Nelson's blood, though. :p

Another fine rendition me mates, this shanty has a very interesting story behind it. Only suggestion I can think of is when you do a song with an interesting history maybe give a little history of the song...just my two pence worth.
